We turn the calendars to September on Sunday, which means it’s officially that time of year. You know what I mean. It doesn’t feel like it’s Summer since it’s September, but it doesn’t feel like Fall because it’s still 100 degrees outside.
#AWKWARD
It’s this time of year when I always feel like it is time to start slowly transitioning my wardrobe.
Now let’s be real, I live in Texas…so even though September is here, cooler temperatures aren’t. Still, once September hits, I don’t want to always be wearing shorts and sandals. Even when it’s still hot outside, I want to start looking more Fall-ish. So when Summer starts to fade into Fall, I have a handful of key pieces that I always want to have available. In addition to these GO TO articles of clothing, I also have some tips and tricks up my sleeve for the transition period.
Today I’m highlighting just 1 outfit. But pay attention, because this outfit is built around some PERFECT transition pieces when it comes to early Fall dressing.
THE PERFECT TRANSITION OUTFIT
This outfit is like a master class in transitioning an outfit from Summer to Fall.
Check it out, and then we will break it down.
But first, I have great news! My tortoise sunglasses are finally back in stock! I own these sunglasses in both this tortoise color and the black, and they are my 2 favorite pairs of sunglasses I’ve ever owned. Click HERE to see them on me in black.

5 TIPS AND TRICKS
Let’s first talk about some of the things I do that help make the awkward transition from Summer to Fall a little less awkward.
- I start introducing Fall colors into my outfits and mixing them in with other colors. This year “rust” is huge, as are “mustard” and “olive“. I also think camo and animal prints scream Fall too.
- I switch out lighter denim to darker denim. A great pair of dark jeans signifies Fall to me.
- Pay attention to material. I think this one goes without saying, but don’t pull out the flannels or the wool just yet. Stick with lighter weight fabrics and don’t jump the gun on cooler weather clothes.
- LAYER UP. Dressing with layers will always kick your outfits up a notch, but it’s also super functional to be able to strip a top layer off if warm and/or add it back on when chilly. Light cardigans, a denim jacket, and a light military jacket are all great choices.
- I always change up my shoe game. I start to feel silly wearing flip flops and sandals, so I switch to flats and sneakers pretty quickly. Peep toe booties are another great transitional shoe (I love these and they are ON SALE), but don’t head straight to boots and booties. There will be plenty of time for those as the temperatures drop.
OUTFIT BREAKDOWN
Let’s look at each of the individual pieces, starting with the cardigan.
Gosh, I love a great cardigan.
And this lightweight cardi addresses Tips #3 and #4. It’s a layer and it’s a lightweight fabric. And it gets bonus points for the fact that it’s a layer with short sleeves.
The blush color is gorgeous year round, but it pairs beautifully with rust and mustard, two of the hottest fall colors. I also love the relaxed fit of this particular cardi. It’s light, airy, and it drapes beautifully. For size reference, I’m wearing a small.
It also comes in black and grey. Whichever color you choose, this cardi will be a work horse in your transitional wardrobe. It is casual enough to wear with jeans, but you could also pair it with a nice pair of work pants or a pencil skirt. When wearing this cardigan, you will look like you are ready for Fall, but you will remain cool as a cucumber. That’s a win in my book.

These jeans are amazing. They shape, they smooth, they lift, and they boast the Wit and Wisdom Ab-Solution technology that we’ve all fallen in love with. I also love the ankle length (I’m wearing the 4Regulars) on my 5’4″ frame because I always like to show a little bit of ankle when wearing flats or booties. If between sizes, I would go down a size.
The raw hem is great, and the dark wash honors Tip #2 (ditch the light jeans for dark jeans).
If I could only have 1 type of jean in my closet for Fall, it would be a dark wash ankle length jean with no distressing and a good amount of stretch. These jeans meet all of the criteria, and they top everything off with a raw hem. I HIGHLY recommend them. The dark wash makes them easy to dress up, and Wit and Wisdom jeans are always flattering as all get out. They fit me great, hold me in (in all the right places), and still manage to be insanely comfortable.
They are a huge confidence booster because you will look and feel great. (And you all know I love their boot cut jeans too. They are the ones that make me feel at least 2 inches taller and at least 5 pounds thinner! Click HERE to see me in the light wash version and HERE to see me in the dark wash version.)
And the belt is ON SALE! This tortoise ring adds a ton of style, and I love how a belt creates a waist. I know a lot of people are scared of belts, but they are actually very slimming!

I had fun playing with color in this outfit, and I thought the rusty bandana and the blush and mustard necklace just pulled the whole look together and had me feeling all sorts of ready for Fall.
My love for tying a bandana on a bag handle started this past summer, and it’s still going strong. It’s such an easy way to add some great flare!

Tip #1 (use Fall colors) influenced my decision when choosing the necklace. I almost picked my beautiful blush Kendra Scott pendant (it went 50% OFF yesterday!), but I ended up going with this one to incorporate some Fall hues.

I was drawn to the mustard tassel, but the blush, grey, and cream beads are stunning.
I added these bracelets to my jewelry collection at the beginning of the summer, and I continue to love them. The cranberry colored stones are gorgeous and work year round. (I actually love all of the bracelet options from Bourbon and Bowties.)

And finally! Let’s talk about these fabulous flats!!!
These shoes incorporate Tip #1 (because of the animal print) and Tip #5 (because they are flats).
Y’all know I’ve loved a leopard flat for years, and I actually continue to love a leopard flat. But when I saw these tiger flats, I thought they were a great updated option! I still consider the pattern a neutral (just like our beloved leopard), but I love the punch this new print is going to add to my outfits! They are a bit unexpected, and I think they are so much fun.
I actually have these exact flats in leopard too, so I can stand by the fact that they are comfortale and well made.
They are true to size.

Do y’all love the outfit as much as I do?
I’m thinking it’s one of my Top 10 favorite outfits I’ve ever shared!!! I think it’s because I love the individual pieces so much on their own AND I love how they all came together. Individually, these pieces will serve me well in my closet, but I know this entire outfit is going to be a Fall favorite for sure. It’s going to be one of those outfits where I think, “Am I going to see anybody today that I saw yesterday when wearing this outfit? No? Well, then I think I’ll wear it again.” Please tell me y’all do that too. Haha!
Here’s one more look at my perfect Summer to Fall outfit made up of perfect transitional pieces.

I adore everything about this outfit! I love the beautiful muted fall colors especially! Just gorgeous!
Nadine says
The cardigan has a tiny bit of wool in it. I am kind of sensitive to wool. Is the cardigan soft or itchy? Thanks!
Sheaffer says
Hi, Nadine! I’m pretty sensitive to itchy things too, and this cardigan doesn’t bother me at all! I would definitely say it’s soft! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂

Thank you for showing unique pieces! I feel like so many bloggers just show all the same items and aren’t unique. Thank you! Love this outfit!
Casey says
Also, do you have any skin care recommendations to combat fine lines and wrinkles??
Sheaffer says
I do, Kasey! Everything I read is from the Colleen Rothschild line! Her site is super user friendly. There’s a “skin concerns” drop down box where you can choose your problem area, and the reviews are SO HELPFUL! She also has videos that go with each product! Let me know if you have more questions! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Candie Schaal says
I love your blog! I never comment but I really want to try the jeans. Do you recommend going down a size. Also, Im 5’3″but I never buy petite. Do you think that is ok with these jeans?
Thanks,
Candie
Sheaffer says
Hi, Candie! I’m wearing my regular size 4s, but I would say to go down a size if between sizes! And regarding the sizing if you want them true ankle length, you might consider petite. Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Brenda says
Love this outfit! Would you also wear this cardigan with a long sleeve tee later?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Brenda! I haven’t tried it, but I think it would be so cute! xoxo
Keisha Dawson says
I love this entire outfit! So cute!
Karla says
Do you have to hand wash the raw hem jeans so they don’t start fraying too much?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Karla! I just got this particular pair, so I haven’t washed them yet. However, I’ve had raw hem jeans in the past, and I just wash them with everything else. Every so often I would trim a long stray fray with a pair of scissors, but it wasn’t a big deal! Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
