So, y’all know I’m a blue jeans girl. Always have been, always will be. I like dark denim, light denim, skinny jeans, ankle jeans, boot cut jeans, distressed, non-distressed, etc. But I’m working with Nordstrom and ShopStyle today to focus on one particular pair of black jeans.
Hi. My name is Sheaffer. And I LOVE JEANS. ALL JEANS. Blue jeans, white jeans, grey jeans, and black jeans.
I have 4 pairs of blue jeans in steady rotation right now:
1) This ankle pair with the cute little side slits. Click HERE to see them styled with a cream sweater and leopard slides. Click HERE to see them with several Fall tops and loafers. And click HERE to see them tucked into tall black wedge boots!
2) This step hem pair (consider sizing down a size).
3) This boot cut pair that make you look taller and skinnier (than you already are). Click HERE to see them featured in two different outfits.
4) And a pair of boyfriend jeans (these are from the same maker with excellent reviews).
But this year, my love for black jeans in particular has grown. I mean, I’ve always worn them on occasion, but recently I’ve found myself reaching for them again and again. I think the difference is that I finally have a pair of black denim that I love. So now that I found a great pair (that make me feel great!), I’ve found myself wanting to wear them. A lot.
My black jeans are from Wit and Wisdom, and you know I’m one of their biggest fans. Just like some of the other jeans I’ve highlighted in the past, these jeans have the Ab-solution technology. Which means that the jeans suck you in, while somehow still allowing you to breathe. They just hug you in all the right places and they don’t stretch out during the day. And of utmost importance… they are stupid comfy.
Go read the reviews if you are on the fence about these jeans. Some tidbits from reviewers follow: “feel like butter”, “most comfortable jeans I have ever bought”, “no muffin top” , “great post partum jeans”, “nice and stretchy”, “comfortable and forgiving”, “fit like a glove”, “great stretch”, “soft and comfortable”, “really flattering”, and “my new go to jeans”. I mean, LADIES! That’s some high praise!
I want to share the 2 main reasons why I absolutely love my black jeans, and why you should find a pair that you love too:
1) Black jeans are flattering as all get out. We all know that black is slimming, so it just stands to reason that black jeans are going to be slimming and flattering on all body types. Black jeans will make your legs look long and lean, especially if you wear them with black boots or booties. #legsfordays
2) Black jeans are super versatile. You can wear black jeans with a sweatshirt or an oversized sweater and sneakers and look darling. You can also wear black jeans with a cami and heels and look HOT. See? Versatile. I mean, some days I want to look hot…..but most days I just want to be cozy. These jeans let me be both.
And BONUS reason #3) My particular black jeans feel like leggings.
So, today I’m going to share several casual outfits with you that are styled with my beloved black jeans. For size reference, I’m wearing a regular 4 in these jeans. When wearing them with booties, I do have to cuff them a couple of inches, so I actually want to try the petites (and I’m 5’4″). If between sizes, I would suggest sizing down because although they don’t stretch out, they are very stretchy! I went with my regular size and they are good for me.
OUTFIT #1
One great thing about black jeans is that I can wear my new denim jacket with them. For this outfit, I chose the MUST HAVE tunic in this gorgeous “rumba red” color, which is actually a really pretty “cranberry”. I love wearing it now, but it’s going to be great over the holidays. And it’s 40% OFF right now, making it under $25!
For size reference, I’m wearing a small in the tunic and a medium in the jacket.

OUTFIT #2
You’ve seen this blush and wine sweater several times already (with both regular denim and grey denim), but I wanted to pull it out again to style it with black. For size reference, I’m wearing a small in the sweater. Size down if between sizes.
If you want to see it with grey jeans, click HERE.

OUTFIT #3
I know that it can be tricky to wear black on black, but if you break it up with a belt (I’m wearing a leopard one here!), it makes it less scary. And if you layer a jacket on top, it’s not scary at all!
The top, jeans, and boots all work together to create a very sleek and classic look.

OUTFIT #4
I saw this faux wrap top and was drawn to both the cut and the plaid pattern. And the pretty deep green makes it holiday appropriate as well. I’m wearing a small in the top.

Let’s take a walk down memory lane, just in case you need more evidence of my love for black denim. As mentioned previously, I’ve been reaching for them a lot. In fact, I’ve worn all of the below outfits in the last 4 weeks or so.
I loved them with my wedge sneakers for an airport travel day. (Click HERE to see where I was going.)
knot front tee / denim jacket / earrings / black jeans /wedge sneakers
Pairing black jeans with leopard is a no brainer. Here I went ALL IN with a leopard blouse. My exact one is almost sold out, but I found some other leopard blouses that look just as awesome HERE and HERE.
leopard blouse / earrings / necklace / cognac tote / black jeans / cognac booties
Black and Camel together? ALWAYS a good idea. I love this UNDER $40 camel coat, and THIS CAMEL SWEATER would be perfect paired with black jeans. The sweater is called “brown shitake”, but it reads as a dark camel to me.
Make sure you take my sizing tips on the coat. I’m in a large. It says a large is a 6-8, and a 6-8 would be what I would normally order in a coat…but usually a medium would be a 6-8.

Camo and black? Yes, m’am. I also love this camo button up, this long camo cardi, and this long sleeve camo tee. All would look awesome with black jeans!
camo tie front sweater / denim jacket / earrings / black jeans / black boots
Plaid tops look great with all colors of jeans, including black of course. My exact top is sold out, but there are some great plaid options HERE and HERE. And I’m pretty much dying over this plaid coat.
Another day, another denim jacket. Click HERE to head to this original post.

This is one of my favorite black jean outfits to date. I love the mix of the leopard with the stripes, and the army green pairs great with the black. Click HERE to get back to the original post, entitled 8 Fall Staples.

Today’s post was all about casual outfits with black jeans. Soon I’ll put together a post with some dressed up looks with black jeans. Think Girl’s Night Out, Date Night, and Holiday Parties!
So, did I do it? Did I make a solid case for a black jean purchase? If so, my work here is done. Ha! If you don’t have a great pair of black jeans in your closet, what in the world are you waiting for? I promise, once you have them, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them.
Before you go, since this post is sponsored by Nordstrom, I thought it was a good time to review some of the reasons that I love Nordstrom so much. I get new followers all the time that share that they had never shopped at Nordstrom before my blog because they thought everything was too expensive. New Nordstrom shoppers are always so surprised at all of the affordable options! Something else you might not know if you’ve never shopped at Nordstrom before is that they have FREE SHIPPING and FREE RETURNS (ALL the time with EVERY order)! And if you need something in a hurry, 2 day shipping is ONLY $9. And 1 day shipping is ONLY $15! I also have new readers ask me how the Nordstrom return policy is, and the answer is simple: THEY ARE THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS.
Another great perk I enjoy from Nordstrom is being in their REWARDS program. Click HERE to read all about it.
A huge thank you to Nordstrom and ShopStyle for sponsoring this post!

YES, you did it! I have a pair of black jeans I love but if I didn’t I’d be headed to the store ASAP!
Linda Z says
Love my black jeans and my black yoga pants. Going to add a pair of black cords to the mix for this holiday season. Great styling ideas!!
P.S. Can’t wait to see the holiday collaboration you went to LA for. So proud of you, Sheaffer.
Sheaffer says
Awww, thanks Linda!!!! I’m so excited! xoxo
Amanda says
I loooove my Wit & Wisdom black jeans! I ordered another pair of pants from them in a different color, and weirdly the sizing is different…but other than that, love this brand! Told my sister in law to get on them ASAP also since she’s been looking for a pair of black jeans that don’t attract all sorts of lint. Thanks for the tip!!
Sheaffer says
Yay, Amanda! And you’re right! They don’t attract lint!!!!! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Shay Shull says
Yes, yes, YES!!! I love wearing my black jeans!!
Narci says
I looove a good pair of black jeans! These outfits are perfection!
Lulu says
I have the absolution ankle skinny pants in two colors now and have fallen in love with wit and wisdom, I’m getting those black jeans!
Sheaffer says
YEAH YA ARE. You’re going to love them, Lulu!!! xoxo
Sheila says
The other night I wore my black Wit&Wisdom jeans, the leopard shirt, camel booties and because it’s cold, topped it w/a black jcrew sweater and faux leather jacket. I walked out of the house looking like a boss! 😀 Thank you, Sheaffer–I would not have had the confidence to put that outfit together w/o seeing you in it first. And, I LOVE these jeans–they are so flattering and comfortable.
Sheaffer says
Sheila! That sounds SO CUTE!!!!! I bet you were darling! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Betsy Husen says
Love my black wit and wisdom jeans! Do you have any tips on how to keep them looking black and brand new? I feel like mine are starting to fade a bit!
Sheaffer says
Hi, Betsy! I haven’t had any issues with mine, but I wear mine SEVERAL times between each washing. I don’t do this, but I have heard recommendations to turn black jeans inside out when washing them. Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Misty S says
I always wash my black denim alone with Woolite. Seems to keep the color from fading–at least for me.
Sheaffer says
Great tip, Misty! xoxo
Seema says
Sheaffer – remind me again – where did you find the guitar strap for your bag?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Seema! It was Chelsea28 from Nordstrom, but it sold out immediately and never restocked. So sorry! xoxo, Sheaffer
Sharon says
I have black distressed jeans and need to start wearing them more! Love these Wit & Wisdom ones too and may need some. Question: I’m a long-time reader, and in the past you would pair brown boots with your black outfits a lot. Would you still do this? I don’t have black boots, so maybe it’s time to get some. 🙂 Thanks!! Love your blog, as always! Xo
Sheaffer says
I totally would, Sharon! In fact, I think I have some outfits next week where I’m doing it with tall taupe boots. Some pictures today have short cognac boots. Stay tuned! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Carrie says
Just an idea – I love how you do work wear posts with your sister. Would you consider doing something similar with a larger girl? I love your looks but as a larger shaped woman it’s hard to imagine some of the clothing on me. Not to mention many don’t come in my size. I’m thinking someone in the 12/14/16 range. Just an idea! 🙂 Thanks for your posts!
Sheaffer says
This is a great idea, Carrie! I’ll try to find somebody to collaborate with! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Sandy Crayton says
If you could squeeze in some tall/long options for jeans, it would be appreciated! I love your styling & love Nordstrom but need minimum 34” inseam.
Sheaffer says
Hi, Sandy! I’ll start trying to remember to pay attention to that! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Lorie says
Which necklace are you wearing with Outfit #1? Thanks! And can’t wait to see the Sheaffer holiday top…so excited for you!
Sheaffer says
Hi, Lorie! If you go to my previous blog about $40 and under Fall finds, it’s the necklace in the collage! And it’s only $20 right now with a code I give you in the post! Yay! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Sara says
I just want to warn people about these jeans: the chemical smell is SO bad and does NOT wash out. I was horribly embarrassed wearing them, and couldn’t stand the smell of myself at the end of the day. I immediately sent them back to Nordstrom after washing twice more and the chemicals still being so strong. These are awful quality for them; I typically love their jeans.
Sheaffer says
Hi, Sara! Oh No! That’s terrible! Mine have no smell at all. I have them on right now, and I just smelled them, and nothing! This is probably a silly question, but are you sure they are Wit and Wisdom? And if they are, maybe you just had a random pair? I of course wouldn’t be promoting them and shouting my love for them if they smelled bad! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Becky says
I bought the same Wit and Wisdom Absolution black jeans. Love the way they fit, but they have a horrible chemical smell. I have washed them twice and can still smell them from a room away!! I was going to ask you how you got rid of the smell. I hate to have to send these back, but I will if I cannot get rid of the smell.
Sheaffer says
Hey, Becky! This is weird, but some say this and some don’t. Mine don’t smell at all and never have! Not even the first day I wore them. Some other readers have reported this though, so I know you’re not crazy. Maybe return them and try another pair? I know it’s annoying, but I love mine so much!
Erin says
EEK! I’m going all in and trying the black jeans! This will be my first time to try Wit and Wisdom…fingers crossed! I REALLY want to see the dressed up black jeans post because I’m planning to wear mine to work some, too!
Julie says
What size are you wearing in the Gibson twist front top?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Julie! I have that top in two different sizes. I have a regular small that’s a little longer, but the one in today’s post is a petite medium. xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Jen says
Would you be willing to do a post comparing all of your denim jackets? I would love to see them all together and ideas of what you wear with each type of jacket. I think the same concept with your military jackets would be fun as well.
Sheaffer says
Hey, Jen! That sounds like a fun post! I’ll see if I can figure out a time to make that happen! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Lauren says
How do you get your black jeans to not fade after washing????
Sheaffer says
Hi, Lauren! I don’t wash them after every wear. Probably only every 5-8 wearings, unless of course they are actually dirty. Other readers have also suggested Woolite and turning jeans inside out. Hope these tips help! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Julie Bradford says
OK.. maybe I need to just bite the bullet & get these.. I have the wit & wisdom boot cut ab solution that literally make me look 10lbs smaller.. EVERY time I wear someone says you are so tiny.. whoop whoop & then I have the white articles of society ripped jeans which are a FAVORITE… of those 2 brands which do you prefer the most.. b/c I love them both!
Sheaffer says
I LOVE both of the jeans you just mentioned. I don’t have a favorite, and I wear both of them all the time! xoxo
Maggie Jensen says
Nordstrom really really is the BEST! I’m definitely on a budget but I pretty much do all my clothes shopping at Nordstrom. Good prices, great quality, and OUTSTANDING customer service! It’s the Disneyland of clothing! ❤️
cassie // hi sugarplum says
Adore all of these outfits!!! For some reason I don’t reach for black jeans as often, but that changes now!
Amy Leonard says
Sheaffer – OK – i want both the military jacket and the must-have denim jacket, but also want the wit and wisdom black jeans (and i’m struggling to justify all 3). In your opinion, if you had to get only 1 jacket – which one – denim or military??? AND – do you think either would be featured during anniversary sale??
Thanks!! LOVE all of these – the outfits are “work-worthy”. 🙂
Sheaffer says
Hi, Amy! Hmmmmm…….I wear both my denim jacket and my military jacket all the time….but when wearing regular denim, it’s hard to wear a denim jacket. So, do you wear a lot of jeans? If so, I would say go with the military jacket because you can wear it with blue jeans, grey jeans, white, jeans, black jeans, etc. However, I do wear my denim jacket with lots of different dresses. It’s a hard decision! There will definitely be some type of military jacket featured during the anniversary sale, but not this exact one. And my denim jacket has never been in the sale. Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Kelly says
I’m so glad you blogged about the Wit & Wisdom jeans! I have two pair now, they fit me so well. I can’t remember the last time a pair of jeans fit so well. Thank you!
Theresa Childs says
I’m looking for the link to your pretty poncho ?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Theresa! Type in “Caslon poncho” in the Nordstrom search bar! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
