Otherwise known as ANGELS right here on earth.
I’ve been a speech-language pathologist for almost 13 years now.
designed for students with autism) and the FAC classrooms (specially
designed for students with intellectual disabilities).
Oh, the stories I could tell!
I really should write a book. The stories would warm your hearts. 🙂
And you know, getting to know the families is such a neat part of the experience,
a part that I never anticipated.
They would do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING for their kids, and they often do.
I of course have always had a heart for these sweet kids.
dedication that these families have for these special kids that they
love so much, so unconditionally.
And you wouldn’t believe the sacrifices they make.
that they pay so much money for (often out of their own pockets).
They are constantly working with and loving on their kids.
They go to bed tired, and they wake up tired (many children with special needs
have a very hard time sleeping).
And they start it all over again the next day.
It’s truly something to witness.
But in addition to all of the sacrifices that are made for the children, in addition to all of the work…
it’s also of extreme importance to note that these precious kids bring their parents and their families SO MUCH JOY!!!
Yes, the kids are blessed by their families.
But in turn the families are also blessed by their kids.
It’s wonderful to see.
beginning of the school year this year prompted me to come up with a way to
celebrate these moms.
They deserve a little celebrating, that’s for sure. 🙂

My sister-in-law would deserve this so much! She has a boy who was diagnosed with Fragile-X when he was only one. The lengths she-and her family-go to in order to give Cavin a blessed life are too numerous to mention. She is the most patient, loving, and deserving Momma I know! Kendra Scott would definitely brighten up this Momma's wardrobe! Thanks for the way you are willing to give, Sheaffer!

Greetings!
I am the mother of a very handsome, very sweet, huge heart of a son on the Autistic Spectrum & dealing daily with Tourettes syndrome. My son's first diagnosis was speech and language delay at 18 mos. After numerous and what seemed like endless trips to ENTs- Neurologists as well as weekly private sessions with an extremely talented and supportive speech and language specialist ( such as yourself!) It was found that my son has dypraxia. That was the first of many discoveries regarding my sons special needs. My son is soon to be 19. It's hard to believe how far he has come, yet also hard to believe ( and accept) that my son has missed many things a typical 19 year old would experience. But at the end of the day, our family has been blessed with a son who has blessed our family in more ways than I could ever type on this comment page. It's amazing the things that he has overcome and the challenges he deals with on an every day basis existing in a society that at times he does not understand, but struggles to understand and be apart of. Thank you Shaeffer for being a part of special needs families lives. You do indeed make a difference to us, so the door swings both ways .. 🙂

I nominate my friend Tiffany who just told me how all her money goes to therapy and she'd like to look cute!

Hi, Sheaffer I raised a daughter with severe-profound bilateral hearing loss, she received a Cochlear implant at the age of 3 she is now 21 and studying to be a deaf-ed teacher! I also have a 5 year old daughter that is actually a twin born at 28 weeks at birth or shortly after she had an IVH (Intraventricular Hemorrhage) grade 3 and 4 on both sides of her brain. The IVH caused hydrocephalus and at the age of 2 months received a reservoir so that the fluid could be removed to keep pressure off her brain. At 2 1/2 months she received a VP shunt. The IVH caused some weakness on her right side so she has had 2 surgeries to correct her toes which were curled and tendon lengthing. Last summer she had 2 shunt malfunctions and had to have 2 brain surgeries. Since having children with special needs my priorities are a little different than before and things that may have been important at one time arent so important anymore.
Awesome give away!
Thank you

My Mom is the most amazing woman I know (may be a little biased!). She raised my two brothers, one with special needs, and me. She is selfless, diligent, patient, loving and kind. I want to enter my sister in law, Audrey. Her firstborn son, now 19, has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair. He needs constant care and I can only imagine how exhausting it must be. She loves him so much and he brings such joy to their family. They truly see him as their gift from God! Even so, some pretty jewelry would be so perfect for this hard working mama!

My friend Katie is such an amazing mom. Her son was diagnosed with EoE (Eosinophilic Esophagitis) and will barely eat anything. She goes to endless lengths to find food he can (and will) eat as well as shuttling him back and forth to doctor's appointments and feeding therapy. I know the diagnosis has put a tremendous strain on everyone in her family. I don't know if this qualifies as special needs, but she certainly sacrifices for her son! My name is Lauren. Her name is Katie and her email is katielinhart@hotmail.com.

Hey Sheaffer! I've been reading your blog for a few months now and I love it! I'm not a mom of a special needs child and I don't know any mom's of special needs children…but, as of May 2nd I graduated with my masters degree in speech-language pathology. I too, LOVE the impact SLP's can make on other peoples lives. But even more than that, I love the impact our patients/clients/students and their families make on us! This giveaway is awesome!! 🙂

My sweet friend Starr is so deserving of this! 8 months ago, she lost her sweet 18 month old Jayce. He passed in the night to due an unknown heart defect. She has been so selfless through this tragedy and is donating much of her time and money to families who are also bereaved parents. This will be her first Mother's Day since his passing and I think that no mother deserves praise and love more than a mother who has had to give one back. We love Jayce and we love her so much, therefore, I would like to nominate her!
Stephanie Jennings says
What a fabulous giveaway! Three of my four kiddos have a speech delay. They work with amazing therapists! The same three kiddos have severe food allergies, which we struggle with on a daily basis. People just don't comprehend the severity of it. I am in a constant state of worry when they are out of my sight (school, etc). My 7 year old is very good about it and handles it fairly well. He knows he can't eat anything unless I approve it. My 3 year old twins, however, will take anything if someone gives it to them. It's definitely a work in progress. I do believe God gives you what you can handle, and I believe it is making them stronger individuals. I do still pray every night for a cure. Thanks, Sheaffer. Have a great day.

Hi Sheaffer! I would like to nominate my cousin Alaina. She is a mom to a 1 year old, Ayla, born with a random association of birth defects called VACTERL. She dedicates all her time and energy to that sweet girls well being. When you were describing a mom with special needs above, it's like you were describing her and her husband! I know she would so appreciate a pick me up and deserves it!
And thanks for being a speech therapist. Ayla has one since she has never eaten anything by mouth, she struggles with getting her tongue to work properly. And thanks to you all she is learning how to work that tongue, hopefully so she won't have any impairments in thay area later in life 🙂

I am nominating my good mama friend, Maggie. Her son had both physical and speech developmental delays which they discovered at age 9 months when they realized he was going backwards instead of forwards with his milestones. Being the great mama she is, they were able to introduce early intervention and he is practically on target for physical milestones, but is still delayed in speech at age 2. Throughout the whole process, Maggie has been a wonderful friend, mother, and ambassador for children with special needs. She leads a group at our church for mothers of children with special needs of any level and has been such an encouragement in the community.

Thank you so much for this giveaway! We have 2 special needs kids. Our daughter is 22 years old and has CP and is in a wheelchair. She has had a lot of health problems. Our youngest has a genetic condition that requires a lot of blood draws and monitoring. He looks happy and healthy and you wouldn't know that he has any medical issues. My heart goes out to all moms who have special needs children. I have blogged about our story (www.missgracefilledlife.blogspot.com) God has truly sustained us during our darkest times, even on days when I felt pretty mad at Him (to be honest). He has walked me through many hard days. I send love to each one of you. You are doing an awesome job. Love you, Sheaffer, and thanks so much:)

WOW!!!! First and foremost let me start out by giving you a shout out "YOU ARE AMAZING", not only for this post, but for what you do for the families…..you personally and all teachers/therapist hold a special place in my heart because I know that a majority of you that go to school to be who you are "Angels" to us do it out of sheer LOVE for our kids.
To the readers that read these comments that don't know Sheaffer personally, I can assure you that her personality is just as you read her blogs…..wonderful, funny, sweet, sassy, joyful, excited, sincere and most of all GIVING!!!! She gives her life to our children and has made/done miracles with my son who is non verbal and on the spectrum…..so many challenges that we face, but my "Angels" pull me through everyday with new and exciting obstacles, something as small as the letter "h" sound to be able to just say 'Hi". I'm selfish and only want Sheaffer for my son and the summer can't come fast enough for me to continue his private speech sessions. If I could bottle you up, I would, soooo stay clear. 🙂
My son loves you soo much that he can't say it, but he points to a street that we would take to get to your house!!! I feel guilty and selfish entering this contest because I know that there are way more deserving moms out there, but I won't lie…..I would love to have more of KS pieces….so I'll be happy to share if I win. I don't know exactly how, but if I do, I'll figure out a way! 😉 And, again Sheaffer, thank you just isn't enough, but thank you soo much for who you are and what you do for me and all families! Just know that "YOU" hold a special place in our hearts, especially mine!

My mom is one of the most amazing people I know. Between immigrating from Taiwan and integrating herself into the American culture, she has not only sacrificed her family, personal desires, and dreams to ensure that my brother and I have all the resources we could ever want to succeed. As I finish up my Junior Year at MIT, I am becoming more and more aware of how amazing my mom is, something I didn't notice until I left for college. She is incredibly organized and is slowly starting to have the space to spend her days how she wishes and not around us two kids as my brother prepares to enter the Naval Academy. She is incredible, something I could never tell her enough.

I would like to enter one of my best friends from college, Nikki Vigil (nikki.vigil@whitneybank.com). She has one daughter, Mary Payton, that has Late Infantile Batten's Disease (go to http://www.marypaytonsmiracle.com for more info on this devastating and terminal disease) and her youngest daughter, Maison, was diagnosed with Type I Juvenile Diabetes last summer. Nikki and her family have traveled the globe for treatment for Mary Payton. She does all the juggling of schedules, medications and care while also working full time. She does not allow Mary Payton's diagnosis to stop her family from enjoying life. To say she has handled all of this with grace, is an understatement. Nikki, is the strongest person I know and since I live so far from her and can't help on daily basis, I would love for her to pick out some jewelry :).
Thank you,

My wonderful friend Beth (bethstedman.com) is mom to a precious girl with special needs. She has blogged extensively about her daughter, as well as her husband's journey through cancer treatments. She is a true jewel and gives and gives and gives to her family and I'd love to see her have the chance to get to splurge a little on herself!!!

I have to nominate my best friend, Kim, who has always been like an older sister to me. She has a precious boy that was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease around one year of age. He is developmentally delayed, nonverbal, and has a gtube but because of my friend's patience and persistence he finally started walking without assistance and eating without the gtube. She also has 3 other kids, two of which she homeschools. She is also very involved in church. She is basically a supermom. I would love for her to win! My name us Christina. Her name is kim and her e-mail is kawilson95@gmail.com
Nicki says
I am nominating my best friend, Brandy (bam126@gmail.com). Her son Ryder was born in 2009, 6 weeks premature due to some kidney issues that required immediate surgery. He was her first born, so it was of course a scary time for her and her husband, but Ryder had surgery and did amazing. When he was about 4 months old, she noticed that he didn't use his left hand and always left it balled in a fist. So she went to his pediatrician about it. After that visit, she continued to go to more doctors because she knew something wasn't right! Finally, around his first birthday, they discovered that he actually had a stroke in utero which had caused him to be diagnosed with left hemiparesis. He has since been in therapy multiple times a week (continuously), and has gone through some rigorious therapy that included casting his right arm to force him to use the left. Brandy never stops advocating for him, she is always searching for the latest therapies and treatments and ways to help him build his strength and use that left hand. Most recently, she got him into a 4 week constraint therapy program in Baltimore, MD which proved to be amazing for Ryder! He gained so many motor skills in that left hand, and even though she had to take time away from work, her husband and younger daughter, her family did what they had to in order to get the best treatment for Ryder. She is such a rock star Mom, and she doesn't take nearly enough time to treat herself which she so deserves. I would love for her to win this giveaway and know how special she is to everyone around her! Especially her children and husband!

I would like to enter my mother. She is a saint. She has raised my 28 almost 29 year old brother who is wheel chair bound with cerebral palsy and epilepsy with zero help or assistance. She is such a saint that when I found out I was pregnant she said she would be my son's caregiver as well so I could return to work! All day everyday with both boys and no time for herself. This would be an amazing gift for her!

I'm nominating my older sister Jenna. She is amazing. She has 5 kids, and both her 2nd and 3rd children (both boys) have disabilities. They thought they were both autistic, but have since gotten a more accurate diagnosis for the older boy-both versions of language disorder. He has a hard time interacting everywhere he goes (like when playing tag he starts crying and saying everyone is running from him-he doesn't understand the game). He has a kindergarten teacher who is not understanding and my sister is the one left fighting his way with him because no one else will. And with her younger son they still don't know an exact diagnosis, but for about a year and a half, he was constantly pinching, scratching, and kicking my sister, and digging his nails into my sisters scalp to get her attention, even while pregnant with her 5th child. I honestly can't even babysit her kids for 10 minutes, because they are hard. But she loves them fiercely and makes me want to be a better mom. She's amazing!!! And has a long road ahead of her, which she knows. But she never complains about them. She just loves them. It's so inspiring! Thanks for doing such a great giveaway for some of the most amazing moms out there!!! They deserve it! All of them! (Her email is dayzduke@gmail.com)
amy says
I feel weird nominating myself, (amyloren@gmail.com). After 4.5 years of evaluations, drs visits, ect. my son finally was diagnosed on the spectrum. He is a great kid and sooooo smart, but sometimes my heart hurts cause he has a hard time making friends. He moves a 100 miles an hour and has NEVER slept. He goes to bed at 10-11 and wakes so early. This momma could use half his energy. I wish I could give him everything he hopes for. He has a little sister too! She is amazing but I think one of the hardest parts of having a kid who needs just a little more of you, is making the other kids not feel or see that they are getting less of you.
Jocelyn says
Sheaffer,
Thank you so, so much for doing this contest. Just reading the nominations is humbling and inspiring to me. The truth is, I feel like each mama nominated deserves to win.
I would like to nominate my cousin, Nicole. (nicpow@juno.com). She is mama to Ryan, who is autistic. He will turn 6 on Thursday. The struggles he faces are so tough at times, but Nicole has gone above and beyond to help him succeed. She also has three other small children. Yet none of them go without love and attention from her. She does have a blog, but due to having four young kids and one of them being special needs, understandably she has not posted in a while! 🙂 I would like to share a quote from Nicole's blog to demonstrate why she is such an inspiration. "Though I have seen these regressions in Ryan, I don't see him (nor will I ever see him) as damaged goods. He is my son and the Lord specifically designed him to be in this family. Ben and I are searching for the best for him, but ultimately he is the Lord's and I have to constantly give him back to him. I will trust in the Lord with all my heart and lean NOT on my own understanding." http://ryansplace-nicole.blogspot.com/
Thank you for your consideration of Nicole for this prize. I would be thrilled to see her pamper herself with some Kendra Scott jewelry! 🙂

I LOVE this contest and I LOVE Kendra Scott jewelry too! I am a mom to a very special little boy with Phelan McDermid Syndrome. He is non-verbal so our day to day can be quite challenging trying to figure out his wants/needs. As his mom I feel like the biggest gift I can give him is his "voice", whether that it be through sign language or his iPad communication app. I just recently found your blog and love that you are recognizing the special needs moms (I also love that you are a speech therapist!) I think all moms are warrior moms but special needs moms definitely have a different journey than most. Thanks! amyvsmith@verizon.net

I would love to nominate my wonderful sister, Tiffany Elkins who is a mom to a special needs little girl named Molly Kate who is 18 months old and has cerebellar hypoplasia. They spend countless hours each week doing all kinds of therapy ranging from speech, occupational, and physical. They also have many doctors appointments and medical bills can be so high with different testing. Her faith in the Lord is strong and they know God does not make mistakes and put their complete trust in Him. I know she would LOVE to win this giveaway. She blogs about her journey here:

Hi! I'm Valerie. I would like to nominate my friend Amy (amywinstead01@gmail.com). She has two special little boys age 6 and 3. I'll call them J and C. J has Hunter Syndrome. It's an inherited disease with progressive mental and physical effects. J has to take weekly IV treatments. Since Hunter Syndrome is an inherited disease, C was tested shortly after birth. His test came back negative and they were overjoyed but a short time later he began having seizures. C was diagnosed with lissencephaly. Commonly known as "smooth brain", it is a rare gene-linked brain malformation. Children usually don't surpass a 3-5 month old level. Even though both of Amy's kids require different care than others, I've never heard her grumble or complain. She is an awesome mom who definitely deserves a special treat!

I'm Jennifer and I'm nominating my sweet and selfless friend Inger Luff. She is a mom and then some to her special needs girl Lindsay. As a baby, a virus attacked Lindsay's heart which caused heart failure which resulted in a brain injury. Just typing all that makes me teary eyed but God hasa great plan for Lindsay and it's all coming into fruition now. For YEARS I have watched Inger put herself on the back burner to serve not just Lindsay but her family. She does it all with joy knowing what a blessing Lindsay is. I really do believe that the milestones and progress that Lindsay has made is because of the amount of love and care that is poured out by her mom. I think God hand picks moms to care for His special needs children. Inger was on the top of His list.
What a great giveaway!! Thank you for doing this!!

My friend Angie. She's selfless. She's normal. She loves her children. She's involved in the lives of others. If you saw her walking down the street, you'd have no idea what's happening at home or in her van every single day. She serves her family (and I really wish I could nominate her husband and daughter too) well. But the "special" part is her son Sam. She didn't ask to change diapers of her 11 year old. She didn't ask to modify her life to fit a really big wheelchair. Her daughter didn't ask to grow up with a stubborn but hilarious brother who communicates best through a computer. Above all, Angie loves the Lord and it shows in her whole life.

This is the greatest give away evah! Kendra Scott jewelry is so cute but not half as cute as my nephew, William. He was born with down syndrome and tricuspid atresia, a major heart defect. He has gone through 3 major heart surgeries. Through all of this my sister has been a rock star. I know the good Lord has gotten her through this, but I have no idea how she juggles all of the therapies and takes care of my other nephew and niece. That's right, 3 kiddos. She has more patience than anyone I know. She is constantly doing things for William (and Harper and James). She never has complained about taking care of William. She just sees what he needs and goes right on with it. She cherishes every minute with him and never takes it for granted. In the meantime, she has taught her children the importance of helping others. They even had a lemonade stand to raise money for someone that also had a son with down syndrome and had heart surgery. She didn't even know the family, but still raised money and visited them in the hospital.. What a valuable lesson she taught her children. She's also started a support group for parents of kids born with down syndrome. It's called 21 friends. Their group has helped so many families that are just finding out their son or daughter was born with down syndrome. I know these families love talking to someone who has been there, embraced it, and love their child just for who he is. It's amazing to see how far William has come. He is running around and probably the happiest 3 year old I know. . She's just amazing. For these and a gazillion more reasons she deserves the giveway. Thanks for doing this for special needs mamas out there. They all deserve it in my book! 🙂 XOXO

I'd like to nominate my sweet college roommate, Stephenie from Lubbock, Texas. She has a sweet heart the children in her classroom, for special needs children at her school as well as for the many foster children who have stayed in her home. Steph and Scott are at the beginning of their personal journey in the world of special needs as their 8 month old has a chromosomal abnormality. Her first MRI is coming up and Steph would look extra cute in the waiting room in some Kendra Scott jewelry!

Janice has also started a chapter of TACA in North Dakota with a friend so they can reach out to other parents and spread their wisdom and experience and is now working full time for TACA as well!

I have a 28 year old son with Down Syndrome. He is precious and verbal and ornery and captures the heart of everyone who gets to know him. I'm not entering the contest, but I think it's great that you are doing this…and I just want to say a big THANK YOU for all that you (and others) do for kids like mine. I have a feeling that you might not always hear it from the parents. I tried to always show my appreciation to the speech/physical/occupational therapists who worked with my child, but I'm sure there were times that I didn't…times when I was so burdened and overwhelmed and didn't know what to do. Professionals like you became my friends and support system…and showed me how to help my child. God bless you, Sheaffer.

I'd like to say thank you for this, for understanding. It was one of those days today where I needed to read this post, that someone understands this crazy, exhausting roller coaster we ride as special needs parents. My amazing 8 year old boy is ASD and has the most pure heart you have ever seen. He's kind and gentle and an amazing big brother to his sister who adores and looks up to him. He's an incredible kid and people are drawn to his calm, gentle nature. So thank you from all of us, for the contest but more than anything, for the compassion and recognition. Sheaffer, I want to nominate one of my besties, Erin Sammons. She's a beautiful mama of 3 who would never EVER call herself a super mom or a deserving mom of this award. She totally thinks she has it easier than others. Her middle child, Ben, has down syndrome and is just a sweet sweet thing, but he's 8, he's large, sometimes aggressive, & certainly has his own opinions about EVERYTHING. Personally, I find him hilarious, he thinks I'm his girlfriend. However, having a downs child has put an immeasurable strain on Erin's marriage, their finances, and her over all self image. She hasn't more than a handful of full night's sleeps in over 8 years, and the stress has caused her to put on and keep on weight. She LOVES fashion and jewelry, and the fact that Kendra Scott is sponsoring this (as well as you!) is just amazing. KS jewelry is bold, yet simple, and colorful and FUN. Just like Erin. I hope she wins, she's a superstar mama and one of the most amazing women I know.

It's hard to enter after reading all the other comments. A little over 14 years ago my husband and I took a baby into our home that was born to a mother on meth with the intent of adopting if the possibility arose. Those first years were a challenge to say the least as we had no idea what to expect and heard horror stories from too many people to count. Mara hated being held or rocked, screamed constantly, had speech problems, learning delays…you name it. Essentially our doctor explained the damage caused by meth as an organic brain injury. We were able to finally adopt Mara when she was four. Today Mara is in eighth grade and every day learning is a struggle. However, she perseveres in spite of it all and is a beautiful, caring young woman. Next year we are facing a huge new obstacle – high school. It's scary but we'll continue advocating for our girl. BTW, I am a second grade teacher and Mara has made me a better teacher! We are very lucky to be able to call her our daughter. peschaff@bresan.net

Boy do I have the perfect nominee! My older (I have to point that out, ya know) sister, Libby. Her and her hubby have 4 children, 3 of which they adopted from Korea. Dillon is 11 and has global delays and a severe articulation disorder. The poor kid has been through the ringer when it comes to health problems, including asthma/allergies and febrile seizures. I could go on and on about how deserving Libby is- she is a critical care nurse, has been on countless missions trips, is a passionate advocate for orphans, and devotes herself to taking care of everyone around her. I'm a mom of three boys. My youngest Jax had his first seizure at 3mo old and has global delays. We don't actually have an official diagnosis except epilepsy because we don't know. Jax is two. He doesn't walk, crawl or talk. My spend my days working so hard at helping him. It's hard to make time for my other boys. I decided to stay at home and dedicate my time to my kids. So, jewelry buying is pretty much out for me. This is such a wonderful thing you are doing. I love reading these stories. It helps to know I'm not alone in this special journey I'm on.

One of my friends from high school has a daughter with Williams Syndrome. Since she was born, Clare has been special. She is the sweetest little love bug, but her tiny body has so many problems both physically and developmentally. She had her first heart operation at 6 months and now at the age of 8, she is in the hospital recuperating from an extensive 3 part operation on her kidneys and lower vascular system where the incision goes from her chest to her pelvis. Her mom, my friend Teresa, handles all of Clare's issues and concerns with grace. She fights for Clare tooth and nail, all the while giving her other 5 (yes 5!) children the love and care that they all need as well. Theirs is a house full of love, light, and faith and I know it's those things that get Teresa through the rough patches with Clare. With six kids, including Clare, Tree hardly ever gets time or attention for herself. She would be the first to tell you she prefers it that way, that she doesn't need anything except her family and as much good health as she can get for Clare. I would love to be able to surprise her with a Kendra Scott gift because she's so completely deserving, and she's never see it coming 🙂

This is the best contest evah! These women all deserve prizes! I would love to nominate my sister. She is absolutely amazing! My nephew, William, was born three years ago with down syndrome and a heart defect. He's had three major heart surgeries over the last three years. Through all of the stress my sister has been so strong and taken care of her other two children as well. She is so laid back and works with William constantly as well as keeping up with multiple therapy sessions and all of the activities my other nephew and niece are involved in. Even more impressive to me is that she has started a support group for parents that have kids with down syndrome. The support and love she gives these families is beyond measure. It's amazing how these parents are treated at times in the hospital and I know they are so thankful to have someone who has been there to give advice and most importantly just listen to them and let them know what they are feeling is completely normal. She also teaches her kids the importance of helping others that are going through the same things they have. They had a lemonade stand and raised money for a family whose son was having heart surgery and also was a down syndrome baby. They had never met the family and took the money to them at the hospital and got to spend the afternoon with him. It was awesome. The family they were visiting got to see how William is thriving. He's just an awesome kid who means the world to our family. I know that he is doing as well as he is today through the Lord and his wonderful mom who loves him to the moon and back. She looks at him just like her other two kids and never puts limitations on him. He is a rock star…just like his mama! XOXO

I would love to nominate one of the best mama's I have ever had the pleasure of serving through our early intervention program…and my best friend:) She is the mother to two wonderful little boys (4 & 3), one of which was diagnosed with autism at the very young age of 2. As a full time working mother and the wife of a night shift worker, she runs low on time, but is still able to go above and beyond for her son. She not only meets his needs but she continues to challenge him on a daily basis. SHE ROCKS!!!! And she would never in a million years nominate herself for something such as this.

Hi Shaeffer,
I read about your Mother’s Day giveaway, and I think it is such a wonderful idea! Although she is going to be very embarrassed, I am nominating the most deserving mommy I know: my baby sister, Torey. (toreymuhs@gmail.com)
Torey is the mom to four amazing children; Noah is 10 years old, her twin daughters Emmerson and Elliott turnred five years old yesterday (Happy Birthday Girls!), and her youngest daughter Hadley is three.
A year ago this very week, our entire family spent a week in Hawaii. The last few days we were there, Elliott was ill. Torey and her husband took Elliott to the Urgent Care, and were told she was dehydrated from the flu and sent home. We left for home the next day. By the time we arrived, an ambulance met the airplane on the tarmac, and Torey and Elliott were transported to the hospital. She was admitted that night, still with no diagnosis, and she was given fluids. The following day, the medical team ran additional testing, and discovered she had contracted viral myocarditis. The staff rushed Torey and Elliott up to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Shortly after she was taken up, her heart gave out and the medical team administered compressions and CPR for almost four hours. Through nothing short of a miracle from God, Elliott was revived and placed on pediatric life support. That was Mother’s Day, May 12, 2013.
Torey and Elliott stayed in the hospital for five grueling months. They moved home to in mid-September. Elliott’s heart and lungs are completely healed, but she has brain injuries due to the length of time she received CPR. She is not verbal, in a wheelchair, has a feeding tube and requires full-time, full-body care.
Torey and her husband have done such an amazing job caring for Elliott. Torey advocates for her educationally and physically; she makes absolutely sure that Elliott gets the best care available. Torey has returned to work part-time, while navigating intensive physical therapy for Elliott and school and activities for all three of the other kids as well. Perhaps the greatest testimony to Torey’s ability as a mother is her other three children. In spite of this tumultuous year, Torey’s children have continued to thrive. She makes individual time for each of them. They are happy, healthy and love their mommy and their sister very much. Most importantly, they clearly know how much they are loved. Elliott’s twin sister Emmerson continues to stay connected to her physically and emotionally. They are joyful , funny and sweet children, and a reflection of their loving mom.
Throughout the last year, my sister has handled herself with such incredible grace and faith that it is difficult to put in to words. I visit their home, or talk with her on the phone, and sometimes I am completely overwhelmed by how she is able to wake up every day and continue moving forward. There have been moments I have felt such helplessness; there is nothing I can do to make it better. I have chosen to nominate Torey for your recognition, because my hope for her is that this Mother’s Day, I can give her some new memories. Most of all, I want Torey to always remember that God made her to be Elliott’s mommy- what an amazing, amazing mommy she is.
Elliott’s Facebook updates and prayer page is Pray For Elliott.

Hi Sheaffer!
I would like to nominate my cousin, Erin Crooks for your Special Mom’s Giveaway. Erin gave birth to twins in March 2012 at 25 weeks gestation (15 weeks premature). After 99 and 109 days in the NICU, Connor and Claire were able to go home. After many PT, OT, NICU follow up appointments, Connor and Claire were doing great. In February, Connor started walking with a limp. Erin and Connor were immediately sent for a CT scan; Connor was given a high likelihood of cerebral palsy, so they went in to the scan thinking a diagnosis was around the corner. However, they were met with another surprise: a brain tumor that had been growing since Connor was in her womb, and was now taking up ¼ of his brain. After one brain surgery (where they were able to remove about ¾ of the tumor – the remaining quarter was too close to his brainstem to remove), we found out that Connor had medulloblastoma, a form of cacner that is extremely rare (just try and Google it). In order to care for Connor, Erin has had to quit her job to essentially move in to NYU Medical Center with Connor while he goes through chemo; they spend about 2 ½ to 3 weeks living in the hospital each month, as he requires impatient care. Her husband is working, and her sister (who is on a year-long maternity leave with a one-year-old son of her own) has taken Claire in to her home to care of her (with the help of their mom).
Erin started her blog back in March 2012 when Connor and Claire were born to keep everyone in the loop of their updates. She started it back up in February when Connor received his new diagnosis – http://www.erincrooks.wordpress.com. I know that Erin isn't your “typical” special needs mom, but at this point, their journey is so up in the air with the next surgery likely aligning with her and her husband’s anniversary next week, I’m sure that she would love this! Her e-mail address is emacmahon@yahoo.com.
Thanks for doing this 🙂

I would like to nominate my good friend Stephanie Graham (steph.graham@hotmail.com). She is the most selfless, loving mother of two sweet twins who were born 8 weeks early and diagnosed with a genetic kidney disorder. They spent the first 8 months of their lives in the NICU before coming home on dialysis. They are now 3 and since then have each received a kidney via transplant (from their mom and dad- truly remarkable). However, there are still health complications they deal with daily, especially with their sweet Max who has been diagnosed with a form of cerebral palsy among other health struggles. They have spent countless weeks in the PICU over the past three years – and Stephanie continues to persevere through the tough days bringing glory to God through her sweet babies' stories. She is so deserving of this – thank you for the consideration. What a thoughtful thing to do. =)

My wife, Jen, is an amazing mother for many, many different reasons. Two years ago, she donated a part of her liver to save the life of our son, Liam who had Biliary Atresia and would not have survived without a transplant. There aren’t really words to describe how thankful I am–I mean I will never be able to say thank you enough, or describe how deeply I appreciate what she did–but I would love for her get recognized at every chance possible. As Liam is now doing well and Jen has recovered from her surgery, it’s easy to forget how hard it was, how much pain she was in, how worried she was about Liam. She's simply a great mom. I nominate Natalie Martin. Natalie and her husband, Dennis, gave birth to beautiful Baby Gus last year. As they were getting ready to take him home from the hospital, a nurse came in to do the Standard Hearing Test. Gus failed…..further testing went on to show that Gus has a very RARE Virus known as Cytomegalovirus (CMV). Gus is also blind and brain-dead. His parents were devastated….but they are devout Christians and have adapted to life with this little Miracle they call King Gus. Without any family near them in Oregon (most are back in Kansas) they've really had to lean on the support of friends and man have her friends stepped up! Every day with Gus is a test. He has trouble eating, sleeping and breathing. I nominate Natalie b/c her love for her child pales in comparison to the Faith she has put in her God. She's a full-time, working mom and she is constantly giving Thanks for the lessons Gus has taught her. She's dedicated to raising money to donate to research on his rare virus. Her blog about him is inspiring and beautiful. Natalie is selfless and trusts that there is a much greater reason for Gus' life on this earth. He may never speak or hear or see her….but their hearts are beyond full with love for King Gus.

I'm nominating one of my very best friends since Kindergarten, Jessica Tonka. Her 2 1/2 year old daughter has Kabuki Syndrome, a rare disorder that affects the KMT2D gene, which in turn affects multiple parts of the body. This woman does so much for her daughter. Among all the other things she does for her daughter, she drives to 5 or 6 different grocery stores to get all the products she needs and spends hours in the kitchen to create the foods her daughter needs to stay healthy on the GAPS diet. She does this all while staying positive and taking very little time for herself (if any at all). She is truly an inspiration and deserves this so much. Her email is kinzebach@hotmail.com.

Hi~I am nominating my sister, Neilly Thomas. She is an amazing momma to my niece and nephew, who are 15 months to the day apart!!! She gives continually to her children often neglecting her own needs and wants! She works full-time, is active in their school activities, and is very active in her community in Oklahoma! As you can see, she has little time for herself! I think this would just make her day, plus Mother's Day is very hard on both of us….we lost our mom 7 years ago to MS. Thank you for this opportunity to brighten one young lady's day!!!!

I would love to enter my sister! She's amazing! My nephew, William, was born with down syndrome and a major heart defect called tricuspid atresia. He's had three heart surgeries and through it all she's remained positive and still manages to take care of my other nephew and niece. I have no idea how she juggles it all. All 3 kids activities and William's therapies are more than a full time job for her. She does it all without complaining and enjoys every day with them. She's even started a support group, 21 friends, for new moms and dads of down syndrome kids. It's wonderful to see how she helps these families adjust to life with a special needs child. The kids and her even have had a lemonade stand to raise money for a family they didn't even know that had a down syndrome child that was having heart surgery. I love that she teaches her children the importance of helping others. Her strong faith and love for those kids is awesome. Heather hbrown16@nc.rr.com

Thank you for such a thoughtful giveaway!! How sweet. You were spot on when you said there is a special place in Heaven for mothers of special needs children. I could not agree more! Lord knows all these women are deserving! My oldest brother is 35 and has autism and a complex seizure disorder. My mom is his caregiver and she is the most selfless and loving person I know. She has sacrificed so much and never takes a moment for herself, always putting others before herself. He was diagnosed when autism wasn't as common and the doctors' suggestions were to place him in an institution. Well, my parents refused and even though they didn't have much help, they never stopped fighting for him and have helped him achieve amazing progress. Although it isn't the life they envisioned for themselves and there are some really hard days, he has brought our family closer and given us so much love in return. He is an angel from Heaven and my mom is a saint 😉 She isn't much of a jewelry person so I won't enter her for the contest, but I just had to sing her praises because I think she is the best mother in the world and I'm so grateful I get to be her daughter.

I'd like to nominate my friend a former co-worker C. She is quite possibly one of the funniest and wittiest people I know, and when I was the "new girl" at work, I found myself encouraged by her outlook. She is a great teacher, and I wouldn't have thought twice about requesting that my child be placed in her class. C has the most handsome son with the bluest eyes and to die for lashes, and C dresses him in a way that would never be considered boring boy clothes;). Her son also happens to have Autism. As co-workers, I was able to observe her as a parent of a special needs child, and I must say that if I were a child with special needs, I would absolutely want her to be my mom. She adores her son. Completely smitten with him. She and her husband have become experts on Autism because they want to be experts and the best advocates they can be for their son. I have such respect and admiration for her and would love for her to be surprised to win this gift.

I would like to nominate my friend who not only has adopted three special needs kids but also has two medically fragile foster babies. She is a single mom with the biggest heart ever and a wonderful sense of humor about all the things that go on in the course of her day. Constant trips to Children's seem to be routine for her. She is absolutely amazing. (And can I add she is also a grandmother on top of all that? She has more energy than I can imagine!) My email is raleen1@gmail.com

My son has autism and my husband was hit by a tree a few years ago during a tornado and now he is in NA because he became addicted to painkillers….I have had to be the rock and supermom who home schools my son….I need to catch a break…woooo!!!!!!!!!! I won't go into the whole life story…it doesn't even sound real. HA! Thanks…and good luck to all! rachelcartucci(at)gmail(dot)com

I would like to nominate a friend Audra Huie. She is a wonderful mother and wife and I honestly don't know how she does it all. She is a mother to 4 (a step son who is in high school, a pre schooler and a toddler and a special needs daughter with down syndromes who will be 1 in September). She moved to Nebraska where she knew no one for her husband's job…. he works long hours and is often called in – so this mom is juggling and managing so much on her own. The live in a 2 bedroom home – because their permanent home is in Texas. She drives weekly to Children's Hospital in Omaha (1 1/2 hrs. away)… all while still juggling her other children's schedules. Her special needs daughter has had a number of surgeries and she is just starting to eat solid foods – she is so positive and encouraging. She has started a blog and facebook page https://www.facebook.com/DownRightPerfect. my email is: kathrynLkatz(at)gmail(dot)com

I entered my sister Erica Steadman – she turns 28 tomorrow and has a two year old daughter and an almost 9 month old daughter, Evelyn who was born with Cytomegalovirus (CMV) last August. CMV is a common virus that most people get at some point in their lives and really is only dangerous when a mother gets it for the first time and it affects the unborn baby. It is common among toddlers so it can be prevented by hand washing and careful kisses if you have a toddler at home. It is estimated that 1 in 150 babies will be born with some form of CMV in the United States – more than Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Spina Bifida, etc. It is the leading cause in child deafness! It's not well known because most gynecologists don't prepare their patients for the risk but you can get an inexpensive test before you become pregnant to see if you already have the antibodies to protect you and your baby. Because of CMV my niece baby is deaf in both ears, has microcephaly (small head), will likely have severe developmental delays, and is prone to seizure activity. My sister has handled all of this news with incredible amounts of grace and is already on top of many therapies in addition to caring for her 2 year old. She's so young but already such an inspiration!

I would like to nominate my high school friend Andi Bonura. She and her husband struggled to get pregnant, and finally conceived twins via IVF in 2008. Unfortunately, they were born early, at just 25 weeks, in Feb 2009. Both boys were extremely small, and had numerous health problems. Eli went to heaven at just five months old, but Joey is now a 5 year old. He is blind and has cerebral palsy, as well as a host of other medical and developmental issues, but every time Andi posts a picture of him on Facebook, he is smiling. They were blessed with two more children, so now Andi has two little girls to take care of, as well as Joey. I honestly don't know how she does it, but she keeps it all together! She spends every waking moment (many of which are in the middle of the night when Joey's monitors go off) caring for her family, and never spends time on herself. She is truly a Seriously Special Angel Mom!

I'm going to nominate both my Mom! My sister is fighting stage 4 breast cancer which she was diagnosed with 2 days after having a baby (now 6 months old) and my mom has moved states the last 6 months to care for my sister and grandson. She has been a rock for my sister and the family during this hard time and has taken on the "mom" role for my nephew. She has been there through chemo treatments, physical therapy, radiation treatments, hospital stays, and now permanent hospice living. My sister is unfortunately losing her battle with breast cancer but my mom will not leave her side. She sits with my sister 10+ hours each day with the baby and doesn't ask for anything in return. This is only a small thing I could give to her to show her how much she is appreciated for all that she has done for my sisters and I.

My son has Down Syndrome and even though everything you said was correct… (going to be tired, waking up tired, endless therapy appointments and no free time) I've never felt like I was more deserving of anything! We love our son and know God gave us him to serve a special purpose and we wouldn't have it any other way! He's opened our eyes to so much but we are entirely Grateful!!! Thank You for doing this giveaway

Entering my friend Karrie. She was my oldest and middle daughters' teacher at school. She is an amazing woman and has more strength than anyone I know. She was lucky to become a mother to two very special twin girls. Sadly, one of them passed away in her sleep from the seizure she had from her epilepsy. The daughter who survived is in and out of the hospital just about every other week if not more. Karrie has remained strong through this entire journey and I just admire her so. She is more deserving than any person I have ever met.
Please consider her karrie.ruhl@cerner.com

I am nominating my friend, Katie. Her email is finebergk@yahoo.com. Her completely adorable daughter has a very rare syndrome and requires lots of extra special attention and lots of therapies. Katie is so committed to being an advocate for her daughter and takes everything in stride. Her daughter is so lucky to be in such a wonderful and supportive family and I would love to see Katie win this extra special treat so that when she wore this awesome, fun, and bright jewelry she could be reminded that she is a hero for doing everything she does.

I am blessed to be the mom to one of the sweetest, funniest four year old boys that you will ever meet. He also has Autism. The way he struggles to do so many things that come easily for others with a smile on his face(most of the time) is what keeps me going each day. I was hesitant to nominate myself but I realized I could treat some of the other Autism moms who have inspired and encouraged me on this difficult journey if I won. My email is staceycarrington1@gmail.com Thank you Sheaffer for encouraging all the momma's of special kids…it means so much!

Hi Sheaffer!!
I would like to nominate my much deserving mama for this wonderful giveaway. My brother was [finally] diagnosed with mental retardation and autism 6 years back.(The doctors could never lay a finger on what he had) When he was just a baby he was told he would never walk or talk, thankfully he overcame this awful assumption, but throughout the years he has encountered many other health issues. Just to name a few epilepsy and Tourette’s. My mother spends time in and time out catering to Kameron’s every needs, and I think she would be more than joyed to be able to pamper herself. I’m nominating her because I know she never would nominate herself seeing that what she does everyday is just her normal life as a momma and nothing out of the ordinary.
