Happy Tuesday, everybody! I’ve got an extra post this week talking about something other than clothes for a change. It’s about something we use almost every day, so I hope y’all enjoy it!
I get questions, lots and LOTS of questions about the pups. Chris runs the pups instagram account, and he gets lots of questions too. But out of all of the questions, the #1 asked question is if we have any tips to manage the hair around the house. Like this one from Bryana:
The picture of Buddy and Charlie w/ Carter made me think of this- how the heck do you stay on top of cleaning dog hair after those two precious pups? I have ONE Golden and I can barely keep his hair cleaned up! Any tips or tricks?? I am highly considering investing in a Roomba to run at the end of the day each day. Thanks in advance!! – Bryana
WELL.
Bryana, we certainly wish we had some type of magical answer, but we don’t. However, we do have some tips that help make the constant hair a bit more manageable that we will share with y’all today! And great news! We’ve teamed up with eBay to talk about our new vacuum (it’s a Dyson!). We thought it would be the perfect day to do a PUPPY UPDATE as well…because heaven knows they go hand in hand. 🙂
Just a quick review for those who saw my last pots with eBay, and maybe y’all who didn’t see it will learn something new! Do you know that eBay now has approximately 1.1 billion listings at any given time? Let that sink in. ONE BILLION ITEMS. 81% of those 1 billion items are NEW, and most of those are listed as BUY IT NOW! So, even though some items are still auction style where you can bid, the majority of items can be purchased immediately. Personally, I love the “buy it now” feature, because who has time to be always be checking back in on an auction these days?!? They also have refurbished items, which we’ll get to in a second! And they have a DYSON OUTLET! Who knew?!? #notme #ihadnoidea And there’s a coupon code HERE.
We’ll get to the #1 Question in just a second (THE HAIR QUESTION!), but I think a proper introduction is in order. These are our pups. That’s Charlie on the left and Buddy on the right. And if you ever had any doubts, I’ll go ahead and admit that they pretty much rule the house right now.
The #2 question we get is “How in the world do you tell them apart?” Charlie is quite a bit darker than Buddy, and Buddy is quite a bit thicker than Charlie. No disrespect Buddy, that’s just how it is. Don’t worry, I like a pup with a little meat on his bones. 😉 Oh, and Buddy is a big baby. He whines for his daddy a lot, and gets extremely jealous when Charlie is getting any tiny bit of extra attention. 🙂
Here are some pics of the pups from the early days. And if you are new here and haven’t seen the post where I announced that we got them, you simply must go read it. Carter didn’t know we were getting two, so the post tells you how we told him (and even links to the video where he finds out)! I cry every single time I watch it. ???? It’s seriously one of my very favorite memories of my entire life.
Okay, now that you’ve had a chance to fall in love with them (and not hold their obscene amount of hair against them)…let’s get down to it. BRACE YOURSELVES. Things are going to get ugly for a minute.
Here’s the deal with puppy hair. It’s everywhere. If not managed daily, it will roll like tumbleweeds over our wood floors, and there’s certain places that these tumbleweeds like to collect. Like under the little wooden chair in the entry way…
Under the sofa table in the family room….
And THE MOST aggravating place, underneath the bar stools in the kitchen.
I mean, there’s no way around it, it’s just gross.
So, what are our tips? We’ve got 3.
- BRUSH YOUR PUP. Getting their undercoat under control drastically reduces the amount of shedding. I cannot even imagine how much hair there would be if he didn’t brush them regularly.
- GET A GREAT VACUUM THAT YOU LOVE.
- USE THAT VACUUM every other day, but do maintenance in between. One of Carter’s chores is to use a small dust buster when he gets home from school, just hitting the places on the wood floors where the hair tends to collect (as shown above).
Before we get to our review of our Dyson, many of you have asked us if we use a Roomba. Well, we bought a Roomba a couple of Christmases ago…but the Roomba didn’t work for us (although I have a couple of friends that absolutely swear by theirs). The pictures I shared above showed how the hair collects in nooks and crannies…well, the Roomba doesn’t go into nooks and crannies DANGIT. So although it works like a dream for others, it didn’t meet our needs.
ENTER DYSON. #doihearangelssinging?
I mean, it’s like a Glamour Shot of a vacuum.
When eBay reached out and asked me to do an honest review of a Dyson product, we were thrilled. Chris especially was like “NOW WE’RE TALKING! A BOX ON OUR FRONT STEPS WITH A VACUUM INSTEAD OF JEANS AND BOOTS!” 🙂 We hopped on eBay, looked around a bit, read some reviews, and ended up going with the Animal. Based upon the MANY reviews we read, it seemed like it was the one to go with when dealing with animal hair (hence the name “Animal”. duh.). But was it going to be enough to keep up with the massive amounts of hair from our two furry guys?
The answer? YES!
We wanted to save some money, so we went with a refurbished model HERE (at 67% OFF the retail price!), but you can also get one brand new. The refurbished model arrived in an unmarked box. But ours was clean and looked brand new! We could hardly believe it! This is what the site has to say about their refurbished models: Our refurbished machines have been thoroughly tested to meet like-new performance standards. Units may have some cosmetic blemishes that include scratches and/or other surface imperfections, that do not affect functionality. Ships in non-retail box.
These furry fellas make our vacuum one of the most used appliances in our house.
And by the way, trying to get a picture of myself with two dogs and a vacuum? Not as easy as one might think. This one makes me laugh because it looks like I have my arm around the vacuum.
I had such high hopes for a great shot,, but the pups had other ideas. 😉 #petmemamma
There are things that we ABSOLUTELY LOVE about the vacuum, and there are a couple of small things that we’d like to change.
Let’s start off with what we’d like to change. We really wish it had a retractable cord. I mean, I know that’s totally a #firstworldproblem, but we really like the ease of pushing a button and having the cord suck itself back into the device. We also wish it was a bit easier to maneuver when not in use. With our previous vacuums, we could always pull it back onto it’s back wheels (like a dolly) to push it into another room or back to it’s closet, but the design of this vacuum does not allow for that.
So those are the two things we wish were different.
BUT Y’ALL. WE LOVE EVERYTHING ELSE.
I’m going to give you some THINGS WE LOVE bullet points
- We love it has a canister and not a bag. I know that there are those of you that are die hard bag vacuum ladies, but with the amount of hair we are sucking up on a daily basis, the ability to simply empty a canister is necessary. Nobody’s got time to change a vacuum bag. The canister is easy to remove, easy to empty, and easy to return back to the machine.
- Another really important feature for us is that this vacuum has unbelievable suction. I don’t want to have to put the vacuum right on top of the hair, I just want it to get near the hair and have the powerful suction GET IT OFF MY FLOOR! 🙂 This vacuum does that.
- Our vacuum needs to transition well from hardwood floors to carpet, and this vacuum does that beautifully!
- We like how the ball technology helps it to maneuver easily around corners, and the design of the base helps it go under parts of items like media centers, couches, and the lips of kitchen cabinets with ease. I will admit, the flexibility of this vacuum took a couple of days to get used to (the way it rotates on the ball was very new to me), but now I absolutely love it. I’ll post a video to instatories later today showing you how it can maneuver even around a curved surface!
- Chris does a lot of the vacuuming around here, and he is a big fan of the length of the cord (30 feet!). With our old vacuum, he would have to plug and unplug between rooms, but with this vacuum the reach is extended dramatically! We are able to go through the kitchen, family room, dining room, foyer, and the hall leading to the study and laundry room without ever having to change the location of where the cord is plugged in.
- Chris is also impressed by the thickness of the plug. With our previous vacuums, we damaged a lot of the prongs by pulling it accidentally it out of the outlet when the cord was stretched too far. That’s not going to happen with this vacuum! Chris was a BIG FAN of this feature. #itsthelittlethings 🙂 And I’m sorry, but I have to say, there’s not many things sexier than your man vacuuming your house. Am I right, ladies? 😉
- Both of us were also very impressed by the attachment options. They easily attached and detach, and they are all user friendly. This little guy is for the upholstery. The underside has twin turbines, which were specifically designed to pick up hair without the hair getting tangled up. It works like a charm!
- The stair attachment is awesome as well. The carpet on our stairs gets so beat down, and it looks so dingy when that happens. The stair attachment not only picks up the dirt and the dog hair, but it also fluffs the carpet fibers up really nicely! The stairs look awesome after we use this attachment!
- As I previously mentioned, it goes from hardwood floors to carpet easily, which was also mandatory for us. We don’t even change a setting to do this!
- Pretty much nothing makes me happier than a defined vacuum line on carpet, and this vacuum creates awesome lines. IT JUST FEELS CLEAN when I see these lines! Raise your hands if you love a vacuum line, ladies!
So, let’s sum things up.
Is there a lot of hair?
YES.
HECK, YES.
However.
These faces, their snuggles, and their unwavering devotion make it all worth it.
So here’s the update…
The pups are almost 10 months old now, and they weigh between 65-70 pounds. We all love them like crazy, but Carter absolutely ADORES them. He must say that they are cute at least 23 times every single day. For example, “Oh my goodness, Buddy is so cute laying there sleeping.” or “Oh my goodness, Charlie looks so cute with that piece of grass in his mouth.” Yep, Carter thinks they’re cute. 🙂
They are SUPER schedule oriented. We usually take them on their nightly walk at about 7:15. If we aren’t starting to move to the front door at 7:17, they are like “UM. HELLO?” They eat small portions 3 x a day, take a couple of naps still (1 short morning one for about an hour and 1 long afternoon one that could last up to 2 1/2 hours), and want our love and attention constantly. And we are happy to give it to them. 🙂
Their personalities are actually pretty different. Charlie is much more chill and Buddy is much more high maintenance, but we feel like we picked the two best pups for our family. Oh, and they are the best of friends. When napping, you can usually find Buddy’s head resting somewhere on Charlie’s body. It’s the sweetest. And they play together all day long.
WE LOVE THEM SO MUCH!
And our Dyson makes the hair a little more tolerable. There are so many options on eBay for Dyson vacuums. Some are brand new, and as mentioned before, some you can buy at a deeply reduced rate because they are refurbished. If you are a family that always pays extra for the guarantees, make sure you check because most of the refurbished ones are guaranteed for 6 months and most of the new ones have 3 year guarantee options.
It’s a good thing they’re cute. 😉
A huge THANK YOU to eBay for sponsoring this post. And a ginormous THANK YOU to Dyson for helping my sanity. 😉 Here are some other models that I’ve heard great things about! The reviews are so helpful, so if you are trying to decide on the best one for your family, make sure you take plenty of time to read them! Happy vacuum shopping!
And I’m sure you have heard about the Dyson hairdryer and the WONDER THAT IT IS. They have refurbished options of those too (where you can save $100)! They are still super expensive, but I’m actually thinking of getting one myself. I mean, you can’t put a price on shiny and healthy hair, right? 😉
If you have a Dyson (either a vacuum or a hair dryer), I would love it if you would leave a comment with your thoughts!!!
See y’all back here tomorrow for THE WOMEN TELL ALL Bachelor Recap!
Erika Slaughter says
This post has me wanting a new vacuum cleaner and ALMOST a puppy. 😉
Shay Shull says
Oh my goodness! They have gotten so BIG so FAST!! I just love a dog review!! Charlie and Buddy are ADORABLE! It’s a shame Carter doesn’t like them 😉 .
Denise says
Your dogs are beautiful and I love looking at their faces … so sweet! I have two yellow labs and I have decorated my house around them and their hair. I have a Shark and I love it for the dog hair. I also vacuum every other day which takes about an hour if not more out of my day! #betterthingtodo But I wouldn’t trade it! Here in Michigan we are dealing with muddy paws on a daily basis also … the signs of spring here!
Sheaffer says
Yes, Denise! The muddy paws are killing us right now! But you’re right, wouldn’t trade it for the world! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Melissa says
They couldn’t be cuter! We have a yellow lab…Muddy paws are the worst. I miss my screened in porch!
Hannah Smith says
I am so glad you are enjoying your Dyson. I absolutely hate mine and cannot stand it. At first it was great but I found that the suction got weak and the vacuum had too many problems despite the costly price. I’m curious if anyone else has had these problems with their Dyson’s?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Hannah! I’m so sorry to hear this. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything but high praise. I wonder if you got a lemon? Again, so sorry! xoxo, Sheaffer
Susan says
I have the same problem with the suction. It isn’t awful but not nearly as good as when I first bought it!
sydnee says
I love mine, Hannah! We’ve had our Dyson for almost 3 years now, and I feel it works just as great now as we did when we first got it. I’m a big believer in the Dyson brand because of our vacuum. In fact, I got the hair dyrer for Christmas (such a splurge), and I might even love it more than our vacuum. Maybe you did get a dud?
Heather says
We had a Dyson, too, and at first it was great but over time it lost most of its suction. I ended up replacing it with something considerably cheaper and it has last much longer than my Dyson.
Sheaffer says
Hi, Heather! From what people are saying, it sounds like you need to clean the Dyson every year for it to maintain it’s suction. One reader said there were HOW TOs on Pinterest on how to do this. Hope this helps!
Tiffany says
That happens to our Dyson sometimes too. Have you tried cleaning it? You can find directions on Pinterest on how to fully clean your vacuum. I clean ours once a year and it’s like brand new every time after a little TLC.
Sheaffer says
Great tip, Tiffany! Thank you for taking the time to leave it!
Lori says
You need a Roomba!
He can take care of those nasty fur balls between vacuuming!
Sheaffer says
Hi, Lori! In the post I talked about how a Roomba didn’t work for us. The hair tends to collect where the Roomba can’t reach (like under the bar stools). We had such high hopes for it, but it’s just not for us. That being said, I have friends that absolutely swear by it! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Suzanne Whitehead says
I have a Golden Retriever and a Chocolate Lab – best of both dog worlds, but worst of both fur worlds! Goldens fur tumbleweeds, labs drop invidividual hairs EVERYWHERE! Like you, vacuuming wasn’t doing the trick. We have brick floors, hardwoods, and rugs. I needed something to get the “gathering areas” without having to pull out the vacuum every time. I got the cordless, stick cleaner and it is the BEST!
Butter than a dust buster because I can stand up, it came with 6 attachments, (love the long extending one for pesky cobwebs on our pitched ceilings), and is SOOO easy and not messy to dump the container.
However, it is a short running device. You will get about 30 min of regular suction and 10 of extra suction so it is definitely just an in-between major vacuuming item. But it has made that TONS easier!
Sheaffer says
Hi, Suzanne! Great feedback! I almost got the stick vacuum (I have a neighbor that want to marry hers!), but I was worried about it holding a charge. Great to hear your point of view! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Narci says
We love Dyson over here! Best purchase ever! We have the handheld and an animal, and they are both so awesome!
Nichole says
Does anyone remember when we all got money from the stimulus back in like 2007? We had just bought our first house and we used that money to buy a dyson. 11 years later it’s still kicking. We’ve also had 2 Dyson stick vacuums. We just got a V7 late last year to replace a several year old stick vacuum and it is a LIFESAVER. I use it multiple times a day. It is AMAZING on my wood floors and I love it for stairs. It also allows me to get under things like beds which is great since all of our bedrooms are carpeted and it gets gross under there. We’re definitely Dyson fans!
Sheaffer says
Nichole! Now I need a V7!!!! You gave a glowing recommendation!!!!! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
sydnee says
I love my cordless Dyson! We have 3 cats and the suction on that baby is amazing!
x S | Design by Sydnee ????
Sheaffer says
I mean! Now I want a cordless one. Thinking we are going to be a Dyson family. 🙂 xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Mandy says
Hi Sheaffer- I’ve read your blog for years now and have taken your advice on fashion WAY too often! Ironic that the first time I’m commenting is about a vacuum….????. I have the Dyson Animal and the Roomba and I love both. I use the Roomba M-F and the Dyson every other day. We have a Boxer so no long dog hair but short straight pin-like hair that gets everywhere. The key is to replace the filter and attachments (for the Roomba) and to take the Dyson apart and clean the filter regularly. It took me a long time to pull the trigger on the Dyson because of the price but man, it is worth every penny. I’m horrified/fascinated with how much it picks up every time I use it!????
Sheaffer says
Mandy, I totally agree. Horrified/fascinated is the perfect way to describe it!!!!! Lol! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Karen says
Seeing your fur tumbleweeds made me feel so much better about my life!! I have two dogs and two cats and fur tumbleweeds are a fact in my life!! And like you, I wouldn’t trade it!! I also got the pet Dyson and love it! On the roomba, I keep mine downstairs because it’s LOUD and I don’t like to hear the noise.
Love your blog! Just ordered the wedge tennies for my mom’s birthday! Love your Bachelor recaps!
Jena says
Thank you so much for your wonderful product review on the Dyson! It just so happens that I am currently teaching my 90 4th/5th grade language arts students how to write helpful product reviews and your review is a perfect model! (Of course I will not show the sexy man part tho!) 😉 Synchronicity in action! Even though I don’t have pets I’m very interested in checking out the Dyson!
Thank you!
Meghan says
Glad to see another Golden mom with fur tumbleweeds! If we don’t vacuum every other day ours are out of control. I never thought of eBay for a refurbished Dyson- I will keep that in mind when our current vacuum dies. I agree that a good brush and frequent brushing helps, but I’m finding as our Golden’s full adult coat has come in even brushing doesn’t keep the crazy shedding away at certain times of the year. I was vacuuming at 7:30 this morning to get a few of the fur balls and mud spots that she tracked in after her morning walk . Thanks goodness she’s so cute and sweet 🙂
Cailin says
Not related to vacuuming, but I love the area rug in your living room! Where is it from?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Cailin! It’s from Weir’s about 4 years ago…and it was the last one in stock when we bought it. We had to get the one on the floor! So sorry!
Megan says
Forget the dust buster, you NEED the cordless Dyson V8! It is so lightweight even my 6 year old can vacuum up the dog hair (also a Golden family!). It’s so easy to grab and vacuum a room or a corner without dealing with the cord. The battery lasts long enough for me to thoroughly vacuum about 1000 sq ft. And it has even better attachments for the stairs and furniture than my Dyson ball. Also, it makes cleaning out the car super easy. You won’t regret buying one!
Sheaffer says
I mean. I have to have one, now. Seriously, Megan!
Morgan says
Agree completely with Megan! I LOVE my cordless Animal. It makes cleaning almost fun (almost). We have two long haired shepherds and mine has lasted 3 years so far. And yes, it makes cleaning the car so much easier. No more stopping at those busy car washes and using the big bulky vacuums.
Laci says
I have a rather small house so I bought the Dyson Stick and let me tell you! That thing is my lifesaver!! We are a family of 4 and one pet and I use my stick and the attachments at least 5/7 days a week!! Dyson is wonderful, I had no idea they were on ebay! My mom is also in love with her Dyson, she has one like yours. We are all basically obsessed with Dyson! Good review and what could be better than a Dyson and Puppies? NOTHING 🙂
Elizabeth V says
We loved our Animal and had it for about 15 years before it had too many issues. Now we have the Dyson handvac from Costco And…my favorite is a NEATO. We also have 2 Goldens and I run my Neato everyday on my mostly hardwood floored house. It gets the corners. It gets everywhere and it does it much more efficiently than the Roomba ever did (we tried that first). We also have 3 kids. I’m telling you – get a Neato, also. It takes a team effort to keep the dog hair and outdoor debris they bring in, at bay. Love ebay, love Dyson and really love my Neato.
Cathy says
This might be one of my favorite posts ever just because of you trying to get a picture of you, the dogs and the vacuum! They are just adorable. We also own a Dyson after buying about 826 other vacuums that didn’t work for us. My husband is the primary vacuum user also, and he loves those same things. Because we no longer have carpet but all hardwoods and some rugs, we got the hardwood floor attachment and it is awesome. Our dog is a Wheaten so he doesn’t shed but the Dyson is great for the cat hair from our kitty. I’m after my husband to replace our everyday stick vacuum with the Dyson version. I wish Dyson had something to clean up the muddy paw prints after all this rain!
Alicia says
We have a regular Dyson and I don’t like it, but my husband bought me the cordless stick for Christmas and I am in love. Seriously the best! Love those cute dogs!!
Kelly Henderson says
Dyson is the absolute best vacuum ever! We have been married for 18 years and were replacing vacuums every 2/3 years UNTIL we finally got a Dyson. We have had the canister for 8 years! While we cleaned out he beater bars and canister frequently, we recently discovered there is a filter you’re supposed to rinse and let dry every 3 month, we had NEVER done this up to that point. Our Dyson has never lost suction and we vacuum several times a week, we do not have dogs, I am just a clean freak. I have cordless envy, I feel like I would use that dude every day. We currently are on our 2nd shark cordless but it’s lost suction and its ability to hold a charge. Dyson FOR LIFE!
Sheila Charbonneau says
Love, love, love my Dyson! Picks up the pet hair and whatever lands in the crevices of our distressed wood floors. One of the best purchases we’ve made!
Kristin says
That picture of Carter and the dog hugging on the pet bed…???? I have never left a comment on a blog before but I feel a responsibility to tell everyone about the Dyson blow dryer!!!
I have the Dyson blow dryer and let me just preface with I would have never spent that much money on a blow dryer but it was a gift…and it is absolutely worth every penny. I have A LOT of hair and it is wavy and pretty much a nightmare to blow dry. So I would just let it dry naturally overnight and then straighten it in the morning. But then I also like to run in the mornings, so I honestly found myself choosing when I ran/swam/anything that would require me to wash my hair based on if I was going to have to blow dry my hair. I hated it that much. The Dyson blow dries it in 10-15 minutes and it looks great. The reviews say that people will comment on how good your hair looks and IT’S TRUE. I can also blow dry my 3-yr old daughters hair before bed (so she doesn’t go to bed with wet hair) in 3 minutes. It is definitely quietER, but I wouldn’t say it’s quiet and the cord is bulky, but if you dread blow drying your hair or honestly avoid activities that would require you to do it, make the investment. I know this is dramatic, but it changed my hair life. ????
Sheaffer says
Kristin, I have a couple of friends that absolutely swear by theirs! At first I thought it was crazy to spend that much, but y’all are starting to wear me down! I mean, I pretty much use a hair dryer every single day, so it’s actually TOTALLY worth it!!!!!!!! Right?!? I mean, I NEED a life changing hair dryer!!!! Thanks for taking the time to leave your thoughts! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Kara says
Love the puppy update-please do another one in the future. 🙂 The pictures make me want to grab them through my computer screen. Pictures with Carter-Awesome!
Jenny Null says
I love the puppy update! They are so cute and there is just nothing better than a little boy with his dogs!
We love our Dyson Animal! We have had ours for about 12 years and have never had a problem with it. Ours doesn’t have the ball because it is older and does have wheels on the back to move it around.
If you don’t have a Furminator for your dogs get on Amazon right now and get one. We had a chocolate lab for 15 years and that thing was a life saver for her undercoat. I would take her out to the back deck daily and brush her hair and when I was done I had an entire bag full and wondered how she had any hair left.
Robin says
We have the same style dyson and I Love it. We had to have ours repaired but it was worth every penny 🙂
Angie says
We have a golden pup that must be the same age as your boys, he was born May 6th. We love him to pieces, but the hair…. yeah. We got a roomba and it helps a lot! So does the furminator! Now to find something for the muddy paws…and it isn’t even spring yet!
Regi says
We have 3 furry dogs running around and I can’t imagine being without my Dyson! I’ve had it for around 13 years and it’s still going strong! I just make sure to clean it once or twice a year. Last year I invested in a Dyson cordless stick vacuum and it has truly been a LIFESAVER for me! I use it on the daily, and only bring out the Dyson animal a couple times a week for a more thorough cleaning. It’s tough keeping those furry tumbleweeds at bay, but Dyson makes it much easier!
MelanieL says
The pups (and Carter!) are so handsome! We have the exact same vacuum and I love it!
Patty says
We’ve had our Dyson Animal going on 10 years now and it still works like a charm! We had a lovely Golden who has been gone for a few years now, so I know those undercoats of theirs are no joke! We currently have two long hair cats and they are doing their best to continue the drifts of animal hair everywhere. We’ve had to take our Dyson in for repair once, and it was a very small thing that cost about $40. Our previous vacuums were less expensive, but didn’t perform nearly as well and obviously didn’t last as long. They were too cost prohibitive to repair when they had issues. I found another Dyson at an estate sale that was $35 and marked with a needs work tag. I am still kicking myself for not buying it since I knew it probably would be inexpensive to repair. It would have been perfect to keep in the basement to save carrying the other one up and down stairs. #totalfirstworldprobs I love seeing pics of your pups! We miss our girl every day.
Darcy says
Dyson for the win!!!! We have the V6 Dyson Stick and I tell EVERYONE that it is the best thing you could ever ask for, Mother’s Day, Christmas, a birthday, etc. We have two indoor Border Collies and it is awesome with hair. But we have vinyl plank tile in 100% of our house (and a few low pile area rugs) so the stick is great….if we had more carpet, I would agree that a regular Dyson is best. I have an older (2011 era) upright Dyson multi and I pull it out once a month to go over the area rugs really well….but in general the stick is great for daily maintenance!
Hollie says
Hi Sheaffer! I absolutely adore Buddy and Charlie! I have two dogs – both rescues – a collie mix and a lab mix. We also have beautiful dark hard wood floors that show every piece of white and brown hair they shed. I have a lot of experience with Dyson. I have the exact vacuum you just purchased, which I feel does an incredible job of cleaning. My only complaint is that it is heavy (and hard to maneuver when off, as you mentioned). I also have 2 of their stick vacuums, which I swear by. We have the V8 (newest) and a V6 from a few years ago. I love having the ability to grab it and vacuum our hardwoods, kitchen tile and rugs in just a few minutes. This gets done much more often then me pulling the upright out of the closet, plugging it in, and dragging it around. And just as a side note regarding the suction – the Dyson upright and stick actually have so much suction that I needed to purchase another cheaper, less great vacuum for new carpet that we recently had installed in our master bedroom. The Dysons simply would not move. (The carpet installer failed to warn us of this.) So just FYI for anyone that has high pile, super soft new carpet – Dysons may not be for you 🙂
Nichole says
Just turn the beater bar off on those high pile rugs! We ran into this problem a few years ago and it worked like a charm.
Angie says
Love this puppy update! We will be new parents of a golden in 7 weeks (there were just born on Friday)! My 5 year old boy has no clue we will be getting her and I. CAN’T, WAIT. to see his face when we tell him to pick one out!! After losing our 11 year old golden mix in October our home (and hearts) are just so empty without her….her hair on the other hand I do NOT miss! It was EVERYWHERE!! BUT….we are prepared! We have the Dyson Animal and have had it for years! I absolutely LOVE that vacuum! I’ve found that it does the best job of any vacuum I have ever owned!! And the Dyson Hair Drier is on my wish list!
Jen P says
Hi Sheaffer-A couple of comments and one question for your.
We have both the full size and the stick vac versions of the Dyson. The Dyson Stick vac is a MUST have. As a lot of other readers have commented it is so great for quick pickups and daily use. Its great for picking up the kids and dogs track in the entry ways of our home.
We have a 120lb German Shepard who has super long white hair and we LOVE the Dyson groom tool for brushing at least once a week
https://www.target.com/p/dyson-groom-tool/-/A-13178131
For the question, where did you get your awesome bar stools? We are wrapping up building our new home and I need 4 bar stools and yours are very close to what I have been looking for!
Thanks!
Jennifer
Sheaffer says
Hey, Jen! We got the bar stools on Joss and Main and see them pop up on there every so often! Good luck! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Cheyenne Bentley says
We have this same vacuum for our two Goldens. Yes, the hair is unreal, but we deal with it because…. Goldens. We love them! The one thing that I don’t like about it is the hair gets wrapped around the tube inside the canister which makes it so I have to physically pull the hair balls from the canister and then put it in the trash. We have a super cheap vacuum with the canister and when you pop it open all the dirt and hair falls right out into the garbage without having to touch it.
Do you have that problem with your Dyson animal?
One thing I will say about Dyson is that they have phenomenal customer service. With the amount of vacuuming I have to do to keep up on the hair, we had a piece break and melt inside the brush head. When I contact Dyson, they sent a brand new head attachment that just clicked right in at no charge.

Love my Dysons!!! We’ve had an Animal for about 12 years and the Cordless V6 Fluffy (that is is the actual name ????) for 3ish years. Love them both. Fluffy is great on my wood and tile floors. I tend to use the upright on my carpeted areas. We’ve only had one minor repair, but I do a real good cleaning of them about every 12 -18 months.

Oh my gosh — we have a 6 y/o and 5 month old Golden, and we to SWEAR by the Dyson Animal!
What we also have and LOVE EQUALLY, if not more, is the Dyson stand-up/cordless vacuum. We have it mounted in the laundry room and that’s what I use daily for the dog hair! It’s a GOD SEND!!!

My daughter says I have a slight Dyson obsession :). We have the fan (Love!), I have the hair dryer (LOVE LOVE), we have 10 year old dyson vac. and then just got the cordless animal… let me tell you, the cordless vac is the BOMB! Yes they’re expensive; Costco is my buddy in this case. The cordless vac is on sale right not at Costco for $80 off and I got the fan on coupon as well. I waited for the Sephora VIB sale in Nov (I think its 15% off then) to purchase the hair dryer. It really does dry my hair faster (especially with the Kenra spray you recommended!) and I feel that way there’s less heat damage done to my hair. Our old Dyson works just fine its just clunky and we now have a 2 story house so the cordless is a dream for that~ the old vac is being gifted to one of our grown kids, so win-win 🙂

I think about the dog hair every time you post a dog pic! We have a 1 year old and a 3 year old, both Golden’s and it is like a daily battle with hair. I will say, we need to step it up a notch with the brushing. What do you suggest for a brush? I feel like our girls’ hair is finer on top and doesn’t seem like the brushes I’ve tried have done much.

Hi, Mallory! I don’t even know what kind of brush we have, but I’ve heard great things about the Furminator!

LOVE the Sims family – human and canine. Great post! The pups are getting SO BIG… almost birthday time. What do you have planned for them?! I have a Dyson vac – it’s pretty old. Still does an pretty good job – I’m a slacker on taking it apart to clean it thoroughly.
I had a Golden, and when it was shed time – it was like a light dusting of snow all over my brown carpet! A few tips/tricks about Golden coats. I brushed her every day, outdoors – sometimes with a brush, other times with an undercoat rake. I alternated in brushing her head to tail, and tail to head – it really pulls up the undercoat. Check with your vet about adding some salmon or olive oil to the dogs’ diet to keep the coat shiny and silky, and the Omega-3 fatty acids are great for the heart.
As for the muddy paws during this season – get a Soggy Doggy door mat – available on Amazon, Chewy, and Soggy Doggy’s own site. It’s a soft, absorbent, microfiber-finger mat that takes in mud and water really well. Easy to shake out, wash on cold, low heat dryer. Soggy Doggy also makes a fabulous bath towel/shammy with hand pockets so you can hug and wipe down your dogs – talk about absorbing water!!!
Love your family!

The mat sounds amazing! Thanks for the tip! Xoxo

The dogs are adorable and I know y’all love them! My question is why would you want to have two dogs that big and covered in hair in your nice house? Fence in the back yard and just let them in every once in a while after they’ve been bathed:)
Sheaffer says
Hi, Sally! The dogs are part of our family! I know some people have outside dogs and there’s no judgement from me, but we want our dogs inside with us. We knew what we were getting into with the hair, and their love and companionship is definitely worth it to us. xoxo, Sheaffer

I adore your beautiful pups and can’t believe they are already 10 months.
Leaving these beautiful babies outdoors would be an AWFUL suggestion to ever do. You shouldn’t have pets if they are to be left outdoors. Your pups have a beautiful loving family and will be loved on and given the best life EVER just where they are! So happy for all of you Sheaffer.
LOVE YOUR BLOG!!!!

We bought our Dyson in 2005 and it still works great. We’ve never had a problem with it loosing suction. We bought a second Dyson refurbished for our basement. I can’t imagine having any other brand. My daughter got a Dyson ball as a wedding gift and loves it also.
My son has a 5 month old golden he named Zee. We no longer have our wonderful golden. I do remember the hair quite well. I keep hoping my husband will break down and get another one.

I’m so sorry about your Golden. It’s so hard. ????

I don’t have a Dyson hairdryer, but my stylist does. And it all very nice. However, I don’t feel like it’s any better than my drybar bumblebee travel hairdryer. My hair is SO soft and shiny after using it. And it’s much more affordable.
I have a Dyson vacuum. And a cordless stick vacuum. My stick vacuum can’t keep up with the pet hair (which is what I got it for, the daily quick sweeps on my wood floor. I think I’m going to invest in the Dyson Animal cordless now. The other one doesn’t hold a charge very long and not the best suction anymore.

We’ve had 2 Dyson vacuums and love them. We have 2 boxers and with the recent rains lots of dead grass has been tracked inside with the dogs. We needed a stick vac for daily cleanups and I got a shark, but am returning it. We’ve looked at the Dyson stock vac at Costco. We learned there is a Dyson Service center in Dallas (bonus) because our Animal was making a strange noise. I’m debating on taking the plunge for the hairdryer. Glad you like yours!! The pups are precious! We also have littermates!

How about when your husband is vacuuming… in his underwear… with the attachments tucked in his waistband?! #reallyhappened #handyholster
