It’s Friday, so y’all know what that means! It’s time to link up with Erika, Andrea, and Narci to let everybody know about some of my favorite things!
Let’s kick today off with a bang!!! I’m so excited to be hosting a Special Mama Giveaway! If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile, you know I host a very special giveaway a couple of times a year where I ask that all the entries be moms of children with special needs. You can nominate yourself, or you can nominate a friend!
Here’s a little background: While working in the schools as a speech therapist, I really developed a heart for the moms of the kids I served. These mamas were completely selfless, and their dedication to their children was a beautiful and inspiring thing to witness. They rarely treated themselves to anything because their sole focus was always on their kiddos. I had the privilege of observing these moms for years, and because one of my student’s mom recommended doing something like this years ago (love you, Candace!), I now treat a very special mom a couple of times a year. Goodness knows these moms deserve a little something special!
Well, a couple of weeks ago I had the idea for this giveaway after meeting Colleen Rothschild. She asked me if I had anything exciting come up on the blog, and it was then that I asked her if she would be interested in honoring a Special Mom this Mother’s Day. And y’all. She couldn’t have said “yes” more enthusiastically or quicky! She then shared with me that she too is the mom of a child with special needs. Her sweet son (who is now 24) was born 11 weeks premature with Cerebral Palsy. She is of course thrilled to be honoring a deserving mom.
From Colleen, our SPECIAL MAMA will win a customized $300 skin care package!!! The special mama that is chosen will e-mail Colleen, describe her skin issues and concerns, and then Colleen will put together a regimen that will address her concerns!!! AWESOME! Thank you, Colleen!
In addition to the $300 in skin care, the winner will also win a prize package from me that includes some items that I think every mama needs: the comfiest pair of flats I own (winner chooses the color!), my favorite scent, and a blaridgan or baby blardigan.
The Special Mama’s name will be chosen at random (from the comments section below), and the winner will be announced May 10th!!!! And if you are a special mama yourself, please feel free to nominate yourself! I’m so excited to recognize and honor a deserving mom! (FYI: As always, I’ll be holding one of the giveaways in July, and the winner will get treated to a $1000 shopping spree with me at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale! It’s one of my very favorite days each year!) GOOD LUCK, MAMAS!!!!

Okay, nothing can top the above FAVORITE…but let’s talk about some other faves of mine right now…
Did ya’ll see Wednesday’s post? I talked about great Spring and Summer tops (you shouldhop over quickly if you haven’t seen it yet), and I highlighted a couple of peplum tees.
Here I am in one of them on the way to a baseball game last weekend. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but it’s loose and flowy. 😉
peplum tee / rainbow tassel necklace/ denim shorts / similar sandals with better stock/ stud earrings
And here I am in another peplum tee (this one has way better stock) right before I left to run errands all around town earlier this week.
If this isn’t a summer uniform, well then I don’t what is.
Size References: I’m wearing a small in the tee and a 27 in the denim shorts, both true to size. And good news, you can find a striped peplum tee in plus size HERE.
peplum tee (plus size option HERE)/ earrings / necklace (type in “engraved bar”)/ $39 denim shorts / shoreline converse

I think we need to have a moment over the earrings. They initially sold out a few weeks ago, but I found them again!

I answered READER QUESTIONS earlier this week, and now I have some reader comments I want to share with y’all!
From Shanna:
I bought these shoes at Target recently that would look so cute with so many of the shirts you’ve been featuring! They are really comfortable and run tts (in fact, I accidentally had on a 1/2 size smaller because they’d been placed in the wrong box, and they were only a hair shot on the heel, so they may even run a smidge big).

From Tiffany:
I love the brown wedges you’ve been wearing and want them sooo bad. Nordstrom has been out of size 7 for a long time. Is there somewhere else I can purchase these in size 7? – Tiffany F.
Tiffany, your e-mail prompted me to look for them other places! AND GUESS WHAT! I found them!
Click HERE for the wedges that are true to size. And they come in “buff” too which is a really great neutral! These wedges are comfy, not too high to walk in easily, and they go with everything.

From Katrina:
Hey Sheaffer! Girl I just had to say you are the bomb diggity at picking pants. I just got the blush jeans in the mail today and again….another home run in the pants department!! All of the jeans in my closet (and honestly, most of the tops) have come directly from your blog. Thank you SO MUCH for helping this momma of three very little ones look put together when I leave the house. Without you I’d probably wear my pajamas 🙂 xx- katrina
Katrina! This is exactly how I hope the blog functions for people…..that it helps you shop by cutting down on the time needed….and that you look and feel great in the items you purchase! Thanks for the e-mail!!!! Click HERE for the jeans.

From Nellie:
Hi Shaeffer!
I’ve been a fan every since you started covering Sean’s season of the Bachelor. Even though I am not as young as you, I like your style and recreate your outfits often. I had to pass this fun news on to you. Tomorrow I am going to be part of the filming of a 30 minute infomercial with a well known skin care line. Last Friday we had our fitting and they said to wear/bring a couple outfits we like so they could get a sense of our style. While everyone else was getting ‘set’ outfits, they liked what I brought more than anything and their #1 was the outfit I arrived in.
I just got a call from the stylist and she said the client loved the outfit so much they wanted her to call me and make sure I brought it! Anyway…wanted to tell you that the outfit selected was one I “copied” from you! It’s the jeans w/ leopard belt, cream T, pink duster sweater. I also bought the earrings and watch. The necklace wasn’t exact (sold out) but close.
Thanks for being MY personal stylist! I will let you know when the commercial airs so you can see it. Should be August or September. Looking forward to Bachelorette! – Nellie
NELLIE! Oh my word! Thank you so much for taking the time to e-mail me the story, it totally made my day.
If y’all are interested in the outfit Nellie wore, here it is! It’s one of my favorite blog outfits of all times. Totally classic, chic, and apparently ready for t.v.! 🙂
Let’s talk about the cardi for a second, which NOW COMES IN A STRIPED VERSION as well as some other new colors. I’m wearing a PETITE small. This cardigan is obviously meant to be long, but I didn’t want it to overwhelm my 5’4″ frame by hanging below my knees. If 5’4″ or under, I would definitely recommend going for the petite sizing…but I’m thinking that you taller ladies are going to absolutely LOVE the length. It’s very lightweight (you can even see it blowing in the breeze in the pic below!), it’s received 48 5 STAR reviews, and it comes in several color choices. Read some of the reviews if you are on the fence. Click HERE for the entire post.
long linen blend cardigan / white tee / tassel necklace sold out :(/earrings/$14 bar charm necklace / similar jeans ON SALE!/ leopard belt / color block tote bag / nude flats in “classic nude”/ gold bangle / spike bracelet

Let’s talk about my two VERY FAVORITE THINGS FROM THIS WEEK!!!!
NUMBER 2 FAVORITE FROM WEEK
Carter loves spending alone time with Chris (they call their nights together “Boy’s Night”, and their favorite time from last weekend was also my favorite time….even though we did different things. Chris and Carter went with some friends to a Nerf War Battle at Cowboy Stadium.
That’s Luke, Carter, and Tripp. And they were PUMPED.
Carter was serious about the Nerf battle, and I just loved knowing that my boys were spending some good quality time together…even if it did involve approximately 3,000 of their closest friends and around 70,000 Nerf darts. Ha!
When they were out doing their thing…. I was at home doing mine. Yep, it was a favorite time for me as well. Excuse the picture quality, but that’s me in a blardigan, eating Bueno, and watching Bridesmaids. WITH NOBODY ELSE IN THE HOUSE BUT ME. I think it’s okay to be jealous. #ihitthemotherload
NUMBER ONE FAVORITE OF THE WEEK, AND MAYBE EVEN MY LIFE
Y’all. If you follow me on instatories then you already saw this on Thursday, but Carter hit his first ever home run!!!!!! To say I was excited would be the understatement of the decade. I was THAT MOM, jumping around and screaming like a crazy person. And ladies, I GOT IT ON VIDEO!
I was especially thrilled because Carter has had a hard time up at bat this season. He’s had a lot of strike-outs, he’s been really down about it, and as a mama you know it’s hard to see your kids upset. Well, he’s had the best attitude and has worked really hard at improving his skills. In the last two games it’s started to click…. he’s started hitting….and then on Thursday night he got to cross home plate! I was so incredibly excited for him and proud of him.
And I’m telling you, I lost my ever-loving mind. At one point, I’m pretty sure I sounded like a herd of dying cats. #whatever #totallycalledfor
I’ve forwarded the video to tons of family and friends, and we’ve all laughed and laughed over my shrill screams. I said “GO! GO! GO! GO! GO!” approximately 112,000 times, and my pitch got higher and more shrill and my voice got louder with each step. By the end, I’m pretty sure only dogs could hear me. It was one of the proudest mama moments of my life! GO CARTER!
*****************************************************
I know many of y’all already read my friend Erika’s blog….well, she made quite the announcement earlier this week!!!! Click HERE to read all a little bit about it! I’m so happy for their family and for the little girl who is going to be the newest member of our crew. She is already so loved.

Oh, I’ve got one more reader e-mail to share with you ladies!
From Janet:
Nordstrom Rack has the Carly cropped jeans in a darker wash with the frayed hem. I picked up a pair in the store and love them! – Janet
Thanks for letting me know Janet! For those that don’t know, the jeans I’ve been screaming about for the last 6 weeks are the same cut and style of these jeans (the middle ones pictured). The ones in the collage below are simply a darker wash, and they are NOW ON SALE! FOR $37! And I know many of you are just in love as I am with this style and fit and are pumped that you can now get the darker wash for such an amazing price!
cuffed jeans / Click HERE for this darker wash version. (Click HERE for all of the Articles of Society jeans available at the rack. They also have some great frayed hem shorts!) /light wash jeans

HOLD UP! It’s Thursday night at 10:30, and I’m adding this last thing BECAUSE I HAVE TO. Because even though I can barely keep my eyes open, I FEEL LIKE IT’S MY JOB TO SHARE THIS AMAZING FIND WITH YOU IMMEDIATELY. Sorry for yelling, but this is important. 🙂
I just opened a Nordstrom box with 10 tops in it after getting home from Carter’s baseball game at just after 9:00. Eight of the items are going back tomorrow, I’m still thinking about one of them, but there is one tee that I am definitely keeping.
Y’ALL. THIS TEE IS FABULOUS. It might be the softest tee I have EVER put on my body (I was seriously blown away with how comfy it is), and it’s a very nice weight (not too thin). I got the navy/white stripe combo, but it comes in a white and black stripe combo as well as 3 solids. AND LOOK AT THE SLEEVES! My regular small fit me well, but some of the reviews (it has fantastic reviews) recommend to size down. You might want to read them yourself and see what you think about sizing. I can’t wait to style it with white jeans and a bright and colorful necklace. I’ll also be wearing it super casually with cut-offs.
And I know we talked about the importance of having a couple of special tops in your closet, well THIS one is the other top I’m thinking about keeping, and it definitely qualifies as special. I ordered my regular small, even though most of the reviewers said to size down. WELL. I should have listened. I’ll be trying the x-small and I’ll let you know. But the one shoulder, the ruffle, and the stripes paired with the orange ALL spoke to me.

She has been with them since the beginning of the school year.
Karina Conner says
I would like to nominate Lorri Findley. Not only is she one of the kindest, most genuine people I know, she has 4 kids, one which is a 19 year old auristic son. He requires constant, round the clock care. She wakes up every morning at 5 am to shower him and get him ready to be on the bus to his school by 6:00. She then gets herself ready and goes to work. She has not been able to get away with her husband for the last 19 years since they are unable to leave him with someone because of the care he requires. She never complains about her situation. Ever! I worked with her for a year before I even knew this about her. She is so kind and giving and deserves to have something for herself because of her selfless service to those around her, especially her sweet Jonas.
Tiffanie says
Sheaffer, Would love to nominate my friend Janeen. She has a sweet boy Patrick with down syndrome. He’s had multiple surgeries and therapies and she still works full time!! I love your Carter HR story. I had a similar evening this year. My son hit his first HR as well and I too was that crazy mom screaming like I’d lost my mind. My scream changes too – it goes from I think it is going over the fence, to the ball def went over the fence. I was videoing,b it you don’t see the ball actually go over the fence….I was jumping up and down and all you see after he hits it is fence and bleachers ????.

Shaye Dodson says
Sheaffer, this is the first time I am commenting on your blog after reading it for a few months, but I felt compelled to nominate my sister, Natalie. She is my younger sister but truly a source of inspiration. She has 3 kids, her first was only 3 pounds when he was born & had medical needs until he caught up to his age at 2. Her second child, sweet Max was born at 25 weeks & only weighed 1 lb. 13 oz. He spent more time in the hospital his first year of life than he did at home. Then he was home bound for 2 years after that. He has more medical needs than I can list but I will say that there were times when we didn’t even know if he would survive and now he is graduating kindergarten! He still has lots of special problems & my sister is his strongest advocate but he has come farther than we ever thought & I love to see that sweet smile on his face. Even though she had her hands full with 2 sweet boys, 1 of them with special needs, she still found room for 1 more when they adopted a little girl named Zoe. I am so proud of the mom my little sister has become!
Holly Sharp says
I nominate my best friend, Mary Beth Young! Her oldest child, Emma, has spina bifida. Mary Beth is truly a super mom, and Emma is our miracle girl. She works full time, takes amazing care of her two girls, and is the BEST wife to her husband and friend to all who she knows. I would LOVE for my MB to get this treat!
Alicia Fedell says
I want to nominate my friend Tiffany McClain. Not only is she an amazing friend, but she is a very hard working, single momma who works full time for the Red Cross. She has 3 beautiful daughters and two are special needs. The oldest has cerebal palsy and her middle daughter has down syndrome. She manages all their therapies, appointments, and keeps them involved in school and dance all while working super hard as the main provider for her family. There is even more things going on family-wise that I won’t share here…but if there is anyone that I know that deserves something nice and wonderful for themselves it is her. She is my hero and a total rockstar.
Kim Kauffman says
Yay for Carter! There’s nothing like seeing your child do something like that! My favorite part was when you said by the end only the dogs could hear. I’m still laughing. I wish I could see/hear the video lol! Happy Friday!!
Sarah says
I would like to nominate my friend Tatiana. She is a fabulous mama to 5 (!) boys under 8, one of who is special needs and is such an inspiration and a great role model of a mama!!
Megan McCarty says
My name is Megan McCarty, and I have a daughter with special needs. She is 11 years old, and is our sunshine. Our biggest struggle this year for her has been bullying. On top of all of her struggles, it is heartbreaking to think that other children can be so mean!!!! Happy Mothers Day!
Dana McGuire says
I would like to nominate my friend, Darcy Duzan. She has a sweet little girl with Type 1 Diabetes.
Stephanie Carper says
I would like to nominate my best friend and soul sister – Jennifer Holland. She is an awesome mom to Brooks (6) and Sloan (4). Sloan was diagnosed with PCDH19 Epilepsy at the age of 1. This sweet and spunky girl battles this rare, genetic clustering epilepsy found mainly in females. There is no cure or known path to take. For Sloan, and the other girls with this rare genetic disorder, it means she will always have seizures, her daily life will always be affected, medications will not completely control them…unless… researchers can find a treatment, or a cure.
Stacey says
I’d like to nominate my SIL, Bree. She is such an amazing, kind woman that has had it so rough for the last long time. Bree and her husband have always had trouble getting pregnant, so their four boys are all spaced out four years apart. When she had her second son, they realized he has mental disabilities, but even after 8, almost 9 years of his life, no one can tell them what exactly he suffers with. He has severe leanrning and social disabilities, but all professional opinions on how to move forward differ. Bree found out she was pregnant with twin girls about 3 years ago and was THRILLED. After having 3 boys, she definitely wanted her girls and they would complete their amazing family. Unfortunately, when she was almost 25 weeks along, she lost both girls. Of course she was absolutely devastated. About a year and a half after that she found out she was expecting again, another boy. Right before Christmas, and 2 months before this little boy was due, her 4 year old Eli was diagnosed with leukemia. He was also born with medicinal problems and only has one kidney because of his medicinal problems. Now the remaining kidney is having a heck of a time dealing with his chemo treatments and we’re all so worried about him. They are in the hospital almost every day for his treatments and with a brand new baby, an 8 year old with severe learning and social disabilities, a very, very sick four year old, I think her mama heart is stretched about as far as it can go. The medicinal bills are astronomical and it’s only been a few months so far (his chemo will last three years). This would mean so, so much to her in boosting her spirits. Thank you for doing this giveaway. You are so amazing!
Brittany says
I would like to nominate my sister her name is Tennille Brooks she has 3 boys and 1 little girl she is a single mother who works so hard to take care of her children, she is turning 40 in July and her oldest son just went into the army and her 13 year old son has been autistic since he was born she just called me a few weeks ago and took him to the doctor and they ran test and he is not autistic anymore God has healed him she has prayed every day and night for 13 years and God is faithful and answered her prayers she got a check for him and living as a single mother that check helped so much but she said she don’t need that check she is so happy her son will now be able to get a diploma and graduate high school and he is healed all the praise and glory goes to God!!!!!!!!!
Diana M says
I would love to nominate my dear friend Jeaux. She has a 6 year old boy with Autsim. She is the most selfless person in the world and honestly the most patient and wonderful mother. She is such an inspiration to many and is so deserving of all the good!
Lindsay Ventimiglia says
I am nominating my MOM! My sister has a very rare disease called Williams Syndrome – being a mom myself not and realizing the challenges (also the fiercest love imaginable) I think of her daily and how she did it with my sister through such grace and courage. My sister Amanda still lives with my parents and soon will be here in Colorado living with me. Anyway!!! Nominating my mom Judy Alesio ????
Ashley says
I would like to anonymously nominate my friend Marian Swartzentruber. She has a precious daughter Paige with Down syndrome who is close in age to my daughter. We all love sweet baby Paige and she couldn’t have a better mother in Marian!
Amber says
I nominate my Sister in Law, Evy!
Tami Muhlstein says
I would love to nominate my friend and neighbor, Michelle Christenson. She has not 1 but 2 special needs boys, who are the sweetest! ???????? Her oldest had a brain tumor as a baby, has epilepsy and recently had brain surgery to replace a shunt in his brain for hydrocephalus, her youngest has Down syndrome and had to go through an abdominal surgery this past year. These boys keep her busy but also keep her smiling and laughing????.
Amanda Strasburg says
I’m totally nominating myself:). I have a daughter with Pitt Hopkins Syndrome – a super rare, genetic condition. Navigating life as a special needs mom’s has hands down, been the hardest journey I’ve ever traveled, but has already taught me so much!
Anna H. says
I want to nominate my friend, Keri. Her oldest son has a rare genetic disorder (he is the only boy in the country known to have it), and I have watched her travel this journey with grace and tenacity. She spends countless hours in her car traveling to speech therapy and physical therapy, and I know the many hours she has spent in prayer over him. She was initially told he might never speak or walk, and I have seen him do BOTH. Miracles abound!
Jan Fisher says
Hi Sheaffer!
I’m nominating my sister, Linda Chiczewski. Her son, Michael, has apraxia due to difficult birth. He is 28 years old now and my sister and her husband have been such an advocate for him his entire life. He has a full time job at Jewel now and lives at home with them. She would LOVE advice on skin care! Of all your giveaways….this is the one I’d love to win for her!
Love your blog, as you know!

Phi Nga Ngo says
Thanks for the awesome giveaway! I’d like to nominate my mom, Suong Truong. She sacrifice so much for our family and always put others first. It would be great for her to have a day to relax and enjoy herself.
Sarah Wetzel says
I’d like to nominate my friend Jessica Merchant. This past fall her 14 month old suffered a horrible incident and was left with a very serious traumatic brain injury. They didn’t know if he would live but he did and he is a walking miracle! They are still reeling from the incident that very easily could have taken their only child but they are moving forward as they figure out their new normal as a family with a child with special needs. Jessica has been amazing as she has had to learn so much from the countless nurses, doctors, therapists, etc that are now in her life. I’m very proud to call her my friend.
Barbara G says
I have two beautiful boys and my youngest is on the Autism Spectrum. Raising a child with special needs (alongside a sibling without special needs) is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done. The days are hard and, often, extremely lonely. BUT my special needs son has been the cause for probably the absolute most joyous moments of my life.
This quote always makes me think of our special bond 🙂 “And I’d choose you; in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality, I’d find you and I’d choose you.”
Thank you for doing this! It means the world to have other mamas who see our struggles and want to make us feel less alone. Thank you, friend!
Susan says
I would like to nominate Ashley McInturff. She’s a middle school math teacher with a 4 year old daughter with Down syndrome. She just recently (2 weeks ago) gave birth to a little baby boy. She’s a selfless momma to both of those precious children.
Alexandra M says
Oh my goodness! MudLove is my FAVE (my Breathe.) band is ALWAYS in my arm party stack. And those Sam Edelman flats are the comfiest ever. At my elementary school growing up, there was something called the PALS program, and when you got to 4th grade, every student had a “pal” from 11th or 12th grade to come hang out with them once a week. When you’re in 4th grade, that’s the coolest thing ever. Fast forward, we’re all grown now, and Tiffany, my Pal from 4th grade when she was willing to hang out with a 9 year old is now a momma to a special little boy with Autism named Griffin, along with being an SLP providing services in rural areas. Obviously I’m nominating her. 🙂

He needs her for everything as he’s unable to walk or talk, has very limited control over movements and can’t really communicate either, despite how challenging this must be, she’s amazingly positive and a bundle of fun and energy at all times. Every one of these Moms deserve the world.

Six years ago, our family was blessed with the perfect addition as my cousin and his wife had a baby boy! Lawson entered this world
and has been making everyone smile ever since. Not too long after giving birth, it was confirmed that he has Down Syndrome. He is a ray of sunshine and loves to dance to any beat! Since giving birth, not only does his Mama (Leah) work hard at helping him reach his milestones, she is a nurse practionter who devotes her days to working with the elderly! Leah graduated with her Masters all while raising Lawson and his little sister Emma – never once have I heard her complain! She is a special mom with an amazing kid and totally deserves something just for her!
Katherine says
I recommend my friend, Jamie Bruen (@lifting4liam on insta). Jamie is a super mom, a tireless advocate seeking research and answers for her son’s long undiagnosed, extremely rare disorder nemaline myopathy. Liam is almost 8 years old, and when he was born Jamie was basically told to just leave him to die. Liam requires 24 hour type care, is on a permanent vent/trach, etc. Jamie has fought for his ability to do “normal” kid stuff like going to the park and going to school. When he can (medically), Liam rides the bus to school in his wheelchair and attends public school. He uses his eyes to communicate on an iPad and LOVES his dog. Jamie has made all of this possible, sacrificing herself along the way. She has recently gotten back into fitness as a way to keep her sanity, and is an avid baker. She has wonderful support from her parents, but I know she could use a treat like this — especially in time for Mother’s Day! Thank you so much for taking the time to honor these SUPER moms!
Becky says
I would like to nominate my friend Cathy. She is a mom to a 13 year old boy with special needs, along with two other kids. She had moved heaven and earth to get him the help he needs, and he is doing so well now because of her! On top of this, her husband has a terminal disease. She definitely deserves some pampering!
Cori Cane says
Thank you so much sheaffer for doing this amazing giveaway for these incredible mamas. I’d like to nominate my sweet friend Allison Alcott! When her two year old son Cooper was born, they were shocked to learn he had Downs Syndrome. Even though they were not prepared at all for that diagnosis, they didn’t miss a beat. Due to some complications, Cooper spent the first two months of his life in the NICU. I know this was very hard on her as she balanced visiting her newborn in the hospital everyday on top of everything at home….as she has a 6 year old son Connor as well. Then just two years later, they were back in the hospital and devastated as they received the diagnosis that Cooper would now be fighting a NEW battle….leukemia. 🙁 She and her husband would once again be forced to balance life between the hospital with Cooper and home with their older son Connor. Although Allison was overcome with fear, she has continued to acknowledge what a HUGE blessing from God her sweet boy is, and continues to THANK God for his never ending blessings. Cooper is so so lucky to have such an amazingly strong mama who was ready to fight this fight and kick this cancer’s butt! Allison is so SO deserving of this giveaway!! 🙂
Linda says
I nominate Kathy McClelland. She has a little boy with Cri du Chat syndrome. She takes each challenge on with the most beautiful grace. And today is National Cri du Chat awareness day! It would be a major blessing for her!
Cherie says
Sheaffer- thanks for recognizing the many special mom’s out there. I would like to nominate my SIL Kimberly. She is the parent of two downs children. The super sad part is that our sweet Mary died recently from leukemia which has broken our hearts, but Kimberly has really been hit hard. I think a little special pampering would help lift her spirits.
Mary says
I have 2 daughters with special needs. One has dyspraxia and the other is missing part of a chromosome and has difficulties associated with that. I really appreciate the therapists like you that put their heart and soul into helping these kids. Mary Coltrin
Emily Kintner says
I would like to
Nominate my friend Kristin Avery. She is a single mom with a sweet boy with autism. He is 14 and such an amazing kid with his strong amazing momma to thank for that. She has managed tons of services for him, plus a full time job that supports his needs and his extra services and never takes any time or extras for herself. His life has been such a blessing to so many and his momma is a light.

Excited about the fun giveaway!!

I would love to nominate my own mom. She’s a mother of four girls, including my sister Princess Queen Shelby Queen (her own designated royal title ????) who was born with Down’s syndrome. In addition to raising four strong, beautiful young ladies, my mom helped run a successful small business with dad while being an advocate for my sister. I know there were times that it wasn’t easy for her to do it all but I couldn’t be prouder to call her my mom.
Mallory Pettiford-Jones says
Thank you for doing this awesome giveaway – it speaks to your heart! I’d love to nominate my mother, Pam Kydd. She is such a special grandmother. My middle son, Carter, was diagnosed with severe autism after regressing from 20-28 months. Prior to that he was a typically developing, talking boy who is now non-verbal. His diagnosis was hard, but my mom stayed strong and has done everything she can do to make everyday easier for Carter, my other 2 children Landon and Sadie, and myself and my husband. She will watch them all, watch Landon and Sadie so we can be 1 on 1 with Carter at therapy, wake up early to sit with the kids so I can get my oldest to the bus, makes huge family dinners, researches programs and therapies, and just is always there to listen to me or raise me up when I’m having a tough day. On top of all of this, she still works evenings and also watches my brothers kids. Carter is making slow but very steady progress. I would never ever be able to be the mother I am to Carter, Landon or Sadie without her. Special grandmothers go above and beyond in supporting their children. My mom is everything I hope to be if I am blessed to be a grandmother one day. Thank you!
Emilee Lopez says
I always nominate Amy Musselman. She is SO amazing. She and her husband have 8 kids (4 are adopted and have special needs). Little Hai (their son from Vietnam) passed away within this past year. Liam (their son from China) was just interviewed by Special Books by Special Kids. https://youtu.be/-PKlwEZsQoY Amy is also a hospice care nurse.
Jen D. says

Kathy Beams says
I would like to nominate myself. I have a daughter with special needs, We adopted Maggie in 2010 from China and knew that she had an ear deformity(microtia/atresia). But we found out that she had other challenges when we got home from China. She wears a special hearing aid called a BAHA and has been in speech therapy since she was 16 months old. Sometimes her needs are challenging but we thank God for what a blessing our little firecracker is! Thank you for honoring special needs moms with this giveaway!!!
Alyssa Anderson says
I would love to nominate my friend Liz! Her 5 year old had special needs with her downs syndrome and Liz takes all of it so calmly and patiently. From diteary needs to education she handles it all with grace and love! She also home schools all 4 of her kids, and serve’s other families with special needs in our church by taking time with special needs kids during service so patents can attend alone. She is truly amazing!
Celinda says
This is such a wonderful giveaway!
I am nominating one of my “girls” and dearest friends, Jennifer Tritz. She is not only one of the best mothers on the planet to her boys, but her oldest Matthew has multiple special needs. She balances multiple OT, PT, speech and doctors and doesn’t stop at anything expect the best for him. She is such a fierce advocate for children with special needs, that she was inspired to become a special education teacher in her small town. She treats each child as her own, and doesn’t accept anything but the best for them. I am constantly amazed by her!
Thank you for pampering the very special and most deserving mamas out there!
Angie Kimbrough says
I would love to win this. I have three children 16, 14 and 10. The oldest is autistic. He also suffers from stomach issues and has sensory integration disorder. I also teach 165 high school students. I teach both AP biology and the lower level biology so I have about 25 special education students in my classroom daily
Denise says
Thank you Sheaffer for recognizing us moms who have a special journey of unfaltering love and infinite patience. So proud of how far my boy has come over the years…..❤️????????
Courtney says
I always love this giveaway, reminds me that I am not alone on this special needs journey. I am nominating myself. My son (10) is on the spectrum, we now homeschool because the emotional drain of “not fitting in” the normal box at school became overwhelming to us both. I could not be prouder of my boy, he knows who he is and is ok with who he is not.
Kaylee says
You’re amazing for doing this sweet giveaway! I’d love to nominate my boss, Barbara! She is such a amazing woman. I work for their family as a PCA. Her son Dylan is the most amazing little boy and I love spending my days with him. He has both CP and autism. He is such a love bug and the sweetest kid. Barbara works almost seven days a week along with her husband. They own a karate studio together and work so hard. She doesn’t get to spend time to herself at all and I think winning this little giveaway would mean the world to her. She is the sweetest lady and I thank god everyday that I have the privilege of working for her family and spending my days with Dylan. ❤️????
Alexis deZayas says
I’m having a moment over those earrings too… and the Target shoes! Also didn’t know Articles of Society made frayed shorts too?!
Reba Petersen says
I’d like to nominate myself. My oldest son (who is 4) was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes just before his second birthday. This is an autoimmune disorder and it has no cure. It is a relentless, invisible disease. As a parent of a Type One, I get very little sleep and have to make judgment calls daily about the amount of insulin to give my son- too much will kill him, too little will kill him. He’s about to start kindergarten, so we are in the throes of making sure the staff will know how to care for him.
I’d like to win this skin care giveaway. It would be a treat!
Erica says
It feels weird to do so but I am going to nominate myself – if only for an excuse to talk about my sweet boy! Our oldest baby – my son James is a special little guy who happens to have an extra 21st chromosome and has Down Syndrome. He amazes me EVERY day. He’s a little fighter who has battled and won his way through 7 surgeries, including open heart surgery at 3 weeks old, mastered walking at age 2, started running at age 3, and is surviving the antics of his two year old brother who is aged 2! He will be five years old in July and is (I brace myself) on his way to kindergarten after completing his work in a fully-integrated preschool program. I must say that we have all benefited from the dedication and love for James and our entire family by our speech and PT/OT therapists! This is no small feat and it means SO much to us mama’s and kiddo’s with special needs. Even if I don’t win, thank you SO much for this amazing giveaway that helps to spotlight our kids! It is truly priceless!
Kathleen Jones says
Erica Steadman: I would love to enter my daughter Erica Steadman into this giveaway and HOPE she is lucky enough to be spoiled 🙂 My daughter has 3 precious girls, 5, 3 1/2 and 1. Our little Evelyn, her middle daughter was born with severe disabilities because Erica contracted the CMV virus during her pregnancy. Poor little Evelyn deaf, has sever cerebral palsy and is non-verbal and quadriplegic. She and her husband have their hands FULL. They are loving and filled with grace and adoration for their babies and are truly an inspiration.

Hi,
I would like to nominate my dear friend Tricia. She is a mom of three and her youngest has special needs. All three attend our Catholic school. Tricia is the person who chairs Catholic Schools week, a prayer quilt program for those in need in our church/school and just finished two years at our PTO President.
She is always so quick with a thank you note and Starbucks gift card for anyone who does the littlest thing. I don’t think she allows herself a lot of girl time and it would give me great Joy to be able to have her have this amazing give away.
Thank you for considering this nomination and let me know if you need any contact information.

Hi there! We got confirmation of my daughter’s Sotos syndrome diagnoses in early February of this year after a year of working towards the genetics testing. Although we were expecting it, it was still a hard hit. I know we don’t have beat the expanse of problems that we could have, but you are oh so right. I, myself, was a pediatric nurse for 6 years prior to her birth and am lucky enough to have a background that provides me so many resources for her, but I too, saw special needs mommas selflessly giving of themselves. Never did I think I would be in that same position. But we do what we need to do to get our babies what they need! My girl is 4 (as of 5/1!) and my little guy will be 2 in early June. This stage of life is so rough, but I know everything in doing for these babies I was blessed with is going to be worth it in the long run.
Thank you for doing this! You have such an amazing and kind heart to recognize a small demographic of mommas that are often forgotten!
Yolanda McLean says
I’d like to nominate my friend and neighbor, Heather Bassham. Here seven year old son is autistic and they struggle to find care for him, to find friends for him, actually just about every step of the way is difficult. She just had a baby a few months ago and I know it’s been a transition for her sweet family. She is sure deserving of such a wonderful treat.
Amy Hamilton says
I would love to nominate my best friend, Meg Doe O’Neal, who is an amazing mom to an amazing daughter who was born with hydrocephalus. Thanks for doing such a wonderful giveaway!
Melissa says
I am so thrilled to nominate my amazing sister-in-law, Montera! She is the mother of beautiful twins – a boy, Chi, and a girl, Eve. They just turned 5 years old and are absolutely adorable! Montera went through a very traumatic birthing experience bringing these two miracles into the world. Very shortly after their birth, it became apparent that, though physically normal, there was just something “different” about Chi. At the extremely young age of 20 months, Chi received a severe Autism diagnosis. Montera accepted the diagnosis with such bravery and determination! She immediately immersed herself into the world of Autism and dedicated herself to learning as much about the diagnosis as she possibly could. She stopped working as a high school science teacher to devote herself entirely to making sure that Chi received the best care imaginable and that Eve wasn’t lost in the mix. Montera is tireless in her devotion to her children! She puts herself last in EVERYTHING and has a stamina that I can’t even fathom. What a blessing for Montera to win something like this! She deserves some much needed TLC and pampering. Thank you so much for remembering these Mommas who give their all each and every day!

I’d like to nominate myself. I have a 30 year old son who is an infant in the body of a six foot tall handsome man. He is fed, bathed, changed and I do everything for him. Thank you.

I would like to nominate my friend Amber Gaskill. She is the most selfless mama I have ever seen. Her precious daughter Romey has OI (osteogenesis imperfecta, AKA brittle bone disease). She does everything under the sun to give her kiddo a normal life and the best care she can receive. You would never know Romey’s bones are so brittle, she is a spunky girlie girl who also has a heart of gold. Amber has two other kids too so to say she is busy is an understatement, and who knows when she last has done something for herself.

I would like to nominate myself. I have a 12 year old daughter who was diagnosed with CP at 2 years old, that only effected her mentally and not physically(which is why it was not caught immediately). While I am very grateful to God she was spared the severity that diagnosis could bring. She has been diagnosed with severe speech and learning disorders. I had to take her out of school 3 years ago and homeschool her as well as travel back and forth for therapy. I love every minute of it, and would not trade her for anything. God made her perfect and he has a great plan for her and I can’t wait to see it.

They are the best of friends. I’m pretty sure Tyler is destined to be a therapist, because of all the training he has received while going to his brother’s weekly PT, OT, and speech appointments for his entire 2+ years of life. First time commented here, and my dear friend Kristina is worthy of such a reason. Kristina delivered her third son at 24 weeks in 2011. Caleb survived his 6 months in the NICU, and he has loving parents who champion his therapy programs, home education, and foster a Christ centered home. Caleb is in a wheel chair due to his cerebral palsy, and Kristina and her husband are nearing the point of deciding to invest in making their current home accessible for Caleb or building a home with wider doorways, ramps to the entrances, and a stair lift to Caleb’s bedroom.
This family is amazing. Kristina is such a devoted wife and mother, and she serves with all her heart. Kristina is incredible. I’m in awe of her. Please spread some love to my friend who gives her all for others.

Christian is hospitalized often and Stacie deserves a little pampering! She is the most loving mom I’ve ever met!

I am going to nominate myself. I am an SLP and worked in the schools for 10 years prior to becoming a mom. My heart would always hurt for the moms sitting on the other side of the table listening to their child’s challenges year after year. Well, now I am that mom. As I sit on the other side of the table listening to the SLP, OT and Sped teacher talk about my son’s difficulties, it pulls at the heartstrings. On the bright side, I love my little guy with all of my heart and feel blessed that he is healthy.
Vesti says

She is the sweetest girl and has had so many challenges over the years, especially being a military family and with all the moves we’ve had to make but she works so hard and has overcome so much. I have to give her so much credit as she is the one who has had to work thru so much but still comes out positive.

I would like to nominate Kathy Jagosh. Kathy is the mom of Ethan, a teenager with autism. We are so lucky to have her at our school! She truly fights for her students on a daily basis.
Kathy has had a rough few years; her brother and mother both passed away within a year of each other. She needs a little extra happy in her life! I can’t think of anyone else who is more deserving than Kathy!

Hi Sheaffer! I would love to nominate my dear Mama. My brother has muscular dystrophy and she works full time tirelessly along with my Dad to provide his nursing care. They literally only get help a few times a week and the rest of the week they take turns. My mom works the 7pm-1am shift every night and I know she appreciates your wonderful blog when she gets a minute or two of down time. Thanks for being such a bright corner in the internet world!

Thank you, Sheaffer!

Thank you so much for your heart for special needs children and their moms! I too worked in the school system as a therapist and I had no idea that God was preparing me for my own special needs child. It is a gift to be her momma! So I will nominate myself. Those words are so hard to type because I don’t feel like I deserve anything any mom would do anything for their child and I don’t feel like I am any different from any other mom. Many blessings and may we all be encouraged through your post and comments of other as it is a great reminder that we are not all!

Her Christian testimony is evident in her everyday life. I love her with ALL of my heart!
Lyndsey Alvarez says
I want to nominate my friend and coworker, Laura. The past few years for Laura have not been easy yet she has come to work every day with a smile on her face. Several years ago she decided to start a family on her own and had several miscarriages before being blessed with twin boys. When her boys were 9 months old, one of them was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma….cancer in both of his retinas. In almost 2 years since then, her little guy has been a superhero, going under anesthesia too many times to count, having multiple surgeries and rounds of chemo, two times where we thought the cancer was gone only to find it come back, and in this past December, having one eye removed completely. Laura has nothing but praises for our God and every day she comes to work with a smile on her face to teach her little kindergartners. Laura is amazing and a true inspiration of what it means to be joyful. I hope she wins!

So sweet to recognize deserving, special moms. I am a special mom myself..4 boys, one who has autism & is non-verbal, but I am here to nominate a special friend. Christine Hill is a friend of mine. We met when our boys attended the same school. She has one beautiful son,Thomas, who has autism among many other things. While Thomas is verbal, he is far behind on his speech, social skills etc. As if the autism alone wasn’t enough for concern, he has been plagued with many health issues as well. He always had difficulty walking and has undergone numerous surgeries. This past year has been extremely difficult for them. Thomas was scheduled to undergo major spinal surgery recently, and a couple of days before he went in, Christine’s mom passed away suddenly. They were mourning as this sweet kid underwent surgery. Never once, in all the years I know her(10), have I heard her complain about this difficult journey she is on. She greets everyone with a smile,is happy and has an amazing outlook on life, but I know how difficult her days are. Many people don’t realize that autism comes with many, many struggles…inappropriate behavior, tantrums, nutrition issues, erratic behaviors, financial strain, etc. The constant worry of who is caring for you child in your absence because he cannot tell you what is happening, watching him undergo surgery after surgery to help him function and walk properly..the list goes on. So for all that she does, all that she is, and all of her heart that she devotes to her beautiful son, I nominate Christine. Thanks for the opportunity to highlight special moms!! Happy Mother’s Day!
Wendy Reeve says
I have to nominate my niece Robin Anne Wills mother of three beautiful little girls. Not only is she a mom to 3 year old Riley Kate and 2 year old Ellis, but she has 8 month old, Hampton, born eight weeks premature that has special needs. In the midst of all that is entailed raising her older girls, her youngest has therapy 5 times a week, lots of doctor appointments and they are still a long away away from knowing the full extent of Hampton’s issues. Her husband is a gem but he has a full time job that involves travel. Because of all her birth complications, Hampton’s doctors say she should be considered more like a 5 month old regarding development. In spite of all that is going on, my niece never complains, is always smiling, adores being a mom and her older girls are the most loving, polite, fun little girls you could ever meet. They adore their sissy and their mom is nothing short of my hero. Thanks for the chance to tell the world how wonderful she is!!
Mallory Lanier says
I nominate Sterling Ivey. She has a daughter with a rare chromosome deletion, and is Katherine’s biggest advocate. She has even partnered with the local Family Y to develop a summer camp for children like Katherine, all while fighting cancer and raising two other children.
Suzanne says
For some reason I just don’t think I need to nominate myself this is the 3rd time I have tried to post. If the other two are here so sorry I can’t tell if I am doing it right. I am a special needs mother to a 10 year old boy that has a rare terminal genetic disease. This month May 15 is MPS awareness Day. He has MPS 3a also know as Sanfilippo syndrome. He no longer can talk, has trouble eating, and walking. And will soon lose his ability to eat and walk. He has a smile tho that can light up a room. He and his sister are the light of my life and have made me into the person I am today
Andrea Bermes says
I would love to nominate my mother, Mabel Bermes. She has a son (my brother) who was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at the age of 5 (He’s 22 now!). She has dedicated her whole life to giving him the best life possible. She rarely shops for herself and never goes out with her friends because she is always by my brother’s side. She totally deserves all of these goodies!

I’d like to nominate my friend, Carrie Ford. She is a twin mama. Her girls are former 29 week preemies who battled TTTS. One of the twins has cerebral palsy, grade IV brain hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, and epilepsy. Not only does Carrie do an amazing job with those girls. Her whole life is centered around Ashlyn’s therapies and surgeries – which have been a crazy number. Not only is she an amazing mom who has raised amazing and sweet girls, but she also sacrifices so much for others in her life. Also she is on the NICU board that takes a lot of her time. She makes sure the nurses, doctors, and everyone who has come into their lives know that they are loved and appreciated. I look at her and am just amazed at how she does it all. Carrie is a truly humble and deserving person!
Merideth Buza says
I nominate my niece Aaron. She not only has her own daughter, Mckenna, who has special needs, but also cares for her adult sister, Devin, who also has special needs. Devin lives with Aaron, her husband Matt, and McKenna! This woman is so selfless. She has been to Africa to help with a special needs school over there. I hope you will consider choosing my niece! She has a heart of gold and deserves to be pampered =)
Christina says
I nominate Helen Smith! Her son Romeo makes her a special mama. And she just graduated with her masters, she never slows down!
Becka says
Thank you so much for recognizing these awesome moms – I love your blog and it makes me smile whenever I read it, so thank you! I would like to nominate my boyfriend’s sister-in-law. Her name is Shelly Simons and she and my boyfriend’s brother (who just retired from the army after 20 years of service) are parents to 9 wonderful children, 3 of which have autism. Shelly also home-schools all of their children and always does it with a smile on her face. She is one of the sweetest and kindest people I have ever met and a true inspiration!
Andrea S. says
I’m terribly shy about nominating myself, but here goes. I’m the momma of the sweetest little girl anyone could meet. My sweet girl was born with trisomy 21 and an AV septal defect (a heart condition). When she was born I was active duty military but I’ve left to provide full-time care for her. She has since had her heart repaired at 7 months and is working hard in physical and occupational therapy to be the best baby she can!
Also, good luck to the other mommas who entered! You are strong women, and I admire you all!
Tesa says
It would be fun to win, so, as much as I hate to, I nominate myself. I have a 17 year old daughter with Down Syndrome. Her nickname is Sassy Lou because she is just a little bit sassy mixed with a whole lot of stubborn independence!!! Which I have to tell myself is a good thing, right?!
Becky Ozburn says
Hey Shaffer,
I want to nominate my amazing mother, Carol Mahan. She has spent most of her life serving and caring for my sister. She was born with Down’s syndrome and is now 44 years old. She has lived with my parents her whole life and since my father died 15 years ago, she has been solely my mother’s responsibility and companion. They have a good life together but constantly mothering for so long does take its tool and she never thinks of herself or spoils herself. She is always serving, giving and thinking of others. She is one of the selfless people I have ever known. She would be so blessed by a little pampering and I can’t think of anyone more deserving.
Tina says
Sheaffer, what a sweet idea to host a give a way for mom’s working overtime! I am nominating my sister-in-law, Rachael Wiker. Their twins were both born with Cystic Fibrosis and she and her husband have done an amazing job making Camden and Mallory’s life outside of the diagnosis as normal as possible, an active childhood full of wonderful memories like every child deserves. Rachael has also become an incredible health advocate for the twins and CF. She is an amazing mom and deserving of some perks!
You can see more of their story here: http://fightcf.cff.org/goto/TwinTriumph.
Cathy Thomas says
I’d like to nominate my sister in law, Jen. She is my hero! She has identical twin boys that both have autism. She home schools all 7 of her children right now and this woman NEVER thinks about herself!! She is the most selfless person I know. I can’t think of a more deserving momma than her!
Carole Gissel says
Hi sheaffer!
I’m the mom of a 22 year old young man with the dual diagnosis of Down syndrome and autism. I’m not nominating myself, though. I just wanted to give a big virtual hug to all the moms out there, especially the ones whose children have just been born or newly diagnosed. It’s a scary time, when your life veers down a path that you never expected. Blessings to all of you. And bless you too, Sheaffer, for acknowledging moms who need a little extra love.
Sara J says
I love that you do these giveaways! I am the mom to twin 4 year old girls with Cerebral Palsy. I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate people who work with people with disabilities and how thoughtful it is that you recognize the families who are living with it! Thank you!

Our ideas of a perfect evening are pretty much identical! 🙂
I’d love to nominate my friend Archana for the Special Mama award. Arch’s oldest son has autism, and she is a fierce advocate for him. *He recently got a job at Hugs!! Arch got her BCBA and opened an ABA center a couple years ago. She is deeply loved and appreciated by her staff, students and parents. Arch has actively served on the board of National Autism Association of North Texas for years. I think she sets a great example for special needs moms as she cares for her family, serves others, and even makes it a priority to do things she enjoys (Pure Barre, dates with her hubby, girls’ night outs, etc). She’s a beauty through and through!!
Megan C says
Love your blog! Thank you for running this giveaway. I would like to add my name to the list. I have an 11 year old daughter with Down syndrome. She’s a tough cookie which is one of the best things about her, but also one of the most challenging!

Hi!
I’d like the nominate myself, even though I feel a little weird doing it! I’m a single mom of a 14 year old guy with autism and an 18 year old transgender son with major depressive disorder. And I take care of my 88 year old dad with dementia. I really enjoy your blog!
Sara J says

I would love to nominate my friend Jennifer who has a son with cerebral palsy. She is an amazing mama who inspires me to be a better mom!

I’d like to nominate my friend Brittany Moyers. Her baby Killian was born at 23 weeks, and she has fought like a tiger on his behalf his whole life. He’s a joy and everyone who knows him is blessed by him, but he requires 24 hour care as he is on a trach to keep his airway open. They’ve had their nursing care slashed, and they just really deserve some love.
