Denim on Denim. Yeah, I’m Going There.

Denim on Denim.  Yeah, I’m Going There.
And not only am I going there….
but by the end of this post,
I firmly believe at least SOME of YOU are going to be convinced to go with me!
Where are we going you ask?
To a world where DENIM ON DENIM is not frowned upon, it’s actually COOL and CURRENT!

My first step towards making you believe that Denim on Denim is cool was
 putting together this collage.
PRETTY FREAKING CONVINCING, RIGHT?
Study it, and tell me you don’t want to be one of these girls.
If done right, denim on denim is totally fashionable, and I think they’ve proven that!

So, now that I’ve proven the cool factor of denim on denim, I thought I should also discuss some guidelines/rules. I took the liberty to make a little graphic for what I consider to be some of the helpful hints needed to successfully pull off a denim on denim look.

 So……..I took my own advice….AND I followed the lead of the images I’d pinned on Pinterest….
and I created a denim on denim look.
And Guess What?!?
I loved it!

So……what’s your initial reaction?
Are you diggin it? or Do you still hate it?
Rules I followed:
Light denim on top, dark denim on the bottom. 
CHECK.
Pop of color with my Michael Kors Mandarin flats (found HERE). 
CHECK.
A little bit of leopard with my belt (option HERE).
CHECK.
I piled on the jewelry with a rhinestone necklace (similar HERE and HERE), my silver MK watch (similar HERE ), my renegade bracelet (HERE), and my eden bracelet (HERE).
CHECK.

I didn’t have time to try this one. 
But click HERE for this denim shirt from Nordstrom.  It was SUPER soft, a great light color, and I thought it looked great with my dark jeans!
AND…it would also look great with colored jeans and white jeans!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the lace trim.  Another great way to make it stand out from dark denim jeans, and just imagine how awesome it would look with white jeans!

And then one of my loyal readers (Shout Out Sarah!) e-mailed me just yesterday asking about pairing the MUST HAVE denim jacket with jeans.
And that inspired me to look for the picture below (an outfit I created sometime last year) so she could see how to pull of that look!

And below is how I put it together.
So I took a darker denim skirt, and paired it with my mustard skinny jeans (that have been sold out forever.  sorry) for another look I really liked!
I mixed some metals in my arm candy (watch HERE , spike bracelet HERE, eden bracelet HERE), I threw on one of my favorite Bauble Bar necklaces found HERE, and my much beloved Sam Edelman leopard flats found HERE.
If you’re not ready to do full on denim on denim yet, this is a way to ease into it!

And I’m sorry, but I’m LOVING how it looks paired with a black sequin skirt.
I would have nowhere to wear this.  But Shay would wear it to church.  Right Shay?!?  🙂

I would like to leave you with this image.
Don’t even try to argue that Olivia doesn’t look totally cool and chic.
I wish we could see her shoes, but even without a shoe shot, I LOVE the look.
The only “rule” she’s following is light denim on top, dark denim on bottom.
 And Still…LOVE LOVE LOVE the look.

    My grandfather used to wear dark denim jeans, a light denim top and a statement hat. Who new he was so fashion forward? I am going to try it this weekend, not sure I could pull the look off at work.

    I'm getting closer to believing. Denim on denim still brings me back to the days of 7th and 8th grade – colehaan loafers and a brown braided belt 🙂 But these are some super cute collages. Here's a dumb question I've wanted to ask for awhile: are you doing the half tuck with the shirt in your pictures or a full tuck? I see half tucks on all the models and have attempted that a couple of times and my husband was all like "what is the DEAL with your shirt? Make a decision, in or out!" But when I do the full tuck sometimes it just feels uncomfortable and too "preppy" or trying to hard. What's your advice? 🙂

    Thank you, thank you, thank you, for this post! I want a denim jacket, but I wear jeans so much and didn't quite know how to match the denims. I'm loving that denim shirts have made a comeback, but again, was afraid to spend the money thinking I couldn't wear it with my jeans.

    Seriously I STILL need to buy a chambray shirt…I'm not sure I can pull off this look..I'll have to try though! Today (as in on my blog, not actually in person), I wore jeans and a jean jacket and I thought that was saying something.

    Oh my goodness….you are the most persuasive person 🙂 I have always feared denim on denim – listen, I live in Seattle, so I'm afraid of looking like a lumberjack! But by the end of your post, I was saying "yes"! Just got my Sperry leopard print flats in the mail (thanks for that suggestion also), so I'm going to try the denim on denim with the leopard print as per your styling! Thank you….Lana

    Ok, you do make a great case but I don't think I am fully ready for the denim on denim look quite yet! I do love the must have jacket with the jeans, never would have put that together but it looks super cute and the denim shirt with the mustard skinnies, now I can get on board with that! Although Olivia's look at the end made your case even stronger but I am still not sold!

    Sorry, Sheaffer, but I am not entirely sold on the denim on denim phenomena. I do, however, really like the look you put together with the must have jacket and jeans. I wouldn't have thought of that, but it is something I am *gasp* willing to try!! Have a great day 🙂

    Hmm.. I'm still not quite convinced.. but I will admit that I like the must have jeans with the must have jacket the best. Maybe a scarf or something (spring scarf/floral/bright color) would help break up the denim on denim a bit?! I'll have to give it a try!! You look darling as usual though!

    I love all the examples shown. I've been wearing denim on denim for over a year…I totally love the look! It's casual chic. In fact, I'm wearing it today with my Caslon military jacket! I favorite chambray top is J.Crew's Keeper Chambray shirt. It's the perfect light color.
