I think shoes are the absolute hardest article of clothing to transition between seasons. Do we all agree on that? Each and every fall and spring I find myself in fashion no man’s land. I feel ridiculous in boots and just as crazy in sandals. Here’s the deal…some of us dress for the weather, while some of us dress for the season. I tend to dress for the season. For example, I don’t care if it’s 74 degrees and sunny outside in February, I’m not going to be wearing flip flops. However, my friend Nikki dresses for the weather and she will be ROCKING the flip flops in February if the weather allows. #rockonnikki 😉
The last several years I feel like I’ve added several shoes to my closet that have proven to be PERFECT shoes for transitioning from winter to spring as well as transitioning from summer to fall. These are shoes that bridge the gap between seasons and help carry you into the next. And they are worth their weight in gold.
So, when Nordstrom reached out to me to talk about shoes, I knew EXACTLY the shoes I would be talking about! Now, since we are talking about shoes, there’s something you need to know about me. I promise you I won’t wear or talk about shoes if they aren’t comfy. I’m not one of those girls that is willing to be in pain for a good lookin’ shoe. NOPE. Not me.
So….what shoes are we going to be talking about today? Shoes that I’ve had for AT LEAST 1 year (with the exception of the booties that are new) and are TRIED AND TRUE in my book. I love them all and they will most certainly be in heavy rotation again this year.
DRUM ROLL PLEASE… I present to you 6 Shoes To Take You From Summer to Fall!!!
ankle booties / chambray toms / shoreline converse / pointy toe cognac flats / leopard flats / nude flats
IMPORTANT: Before ordering any of these shoes, be sure you read the online sizing recommendations and the reviews to decide which size you need!
********** ANKLE BOOTIES **********
My perforated ankle booties are the new addition to my shoe rotation this year. They are almost sold out (boo!), but never fear…I have options for you! My booties (and the options below) are PERFECT for transitioning between seasons because you don’t wear socks with them. These options are either perforated or have an open toe which means they are great now, and just as perfect for fall days that don’t dip below 70 degrees. Just click on the booties you are interested in!
Wearing booties with a dress is all the rage right now, so I thought I would try it out! This dress is a size too big, but I still wanted to show you “the look”. I ordered a medium, because they said a small was a 2-4, and I’ve never been a 2 in a dress. But this dress is oversized, and dangit if the small isn’t sold out now in this print (but I’ll be stalking the site for a re-stock). The dress is still fully stocked in a cream pattern.
dress / booties / necklace / earrings
Get The Look For Yourself Here. I added the tote because I just thought it looked great with the outfit.
Here are other similar dress options:
In addition to wearing booties with dresses, they are also perfect with skinny ankle jeans or cuffed jeans. Thanks to overcast skies and cooler temperatures, I actually wore this outfit yesterday and felt ready to ease into fall. Tell me you don’t want this exact outfit!
For size reference, I’m wearing a small in the shirt. I’m sporting a 1/2 tuck in the picture below, but it’s long enough to wear with leggings as well! And because I’m often asked, I dry clean my shirts….HOWEVER, most readers say that they “wash on gentle and then hang to dry with beautiful results”!
MUST HAVE shirt / necklace / earrings / similar jeans / leopard belt / booties
And here are great bootie options from Lucky that are fully stocked, have fantastic reviews, and are quite similar to mine. One with perforations (on left), one without (on right). I love the color of both and the fact that they both have a low heel. These are perfect for those of you that are either chasing toddlers or are on your feet a majority of the day! Nobody says you can’t be comfy and stylish!
And here are some other great bootie options that will carry you even into the winter (because you can wear socks with them). Just click on what you like!
********** TOMS SLIP ONS *********
Click HERE for my new chambray TOMS slip ons. I first started wearing TOMS about 5 years ago, and they are really great for early fall (since you don’t wear socks with them). This year I picked up this chambray pair. They are definitely more denim blue than grey, even though the pic looks more grey.
I wore them earlier this week with shorts when running to the grocery store, so they are good for now too. Y’all. It’s been challenging for me to get showered and ready this last week of summer. We have been SOAKING IT UP over here. Lots of saying “one more day” in the mornings (when talking myself out of washing my hair) and then throwing on a hat.
I’ve also worn them with cuffed jeans (size down 1 size in these) already too, but I couldn’t even take a picture of the rest of me. #yesitwasthatbad #butmyshoeswerecute You can see how they really are a great chambray color in real life in this picture.
*********** SHORELINE CONVERSE **********
So I had regular converse for a year, and I liked them okay. And then last year I got the papyrus shoreline converse (seen below – but sold out immediately and never restocked). AND I LOVED THEM. AND I WORE THEM CONSTANTLY. Here I am just a couple of weeks ago with a very summery blouse, jeans, and my shorelines.
I wore them all year long. I believe this was from early spring.
In fact, I wore them so much, that I ended up getting the plain white ones as well. For those of you not familiar with shoreline converse, you slip them on and don’t tie them yourself. The laces come like you see them in the picture below, and you don’t do anything with them. You just slip them on and go!
I’ll be styling them a lot this fall with shirts like THIS and THIS (available in petite too). If you prefer another color, here are your choices:
********** COGNAC FLATS **********
These pointy toe cognac flats are ones that I added to my closet on an impulse a couple of years ago…when pointy toe was just creeping it’s way onto the scene. Sadly, these are almost sold out in cognac, but they also come in black leather, black patent, and nude patent.
Here are some outfits I’ve worn with them in the past. First up, a simple tee and cuffed jeans.
This was an unexpected pairing with black and white gingham and white jeans, but I loved it!
A pin stripe popover with white jeans!
A grey tee, white jeans, a military jacket, and gold accents!
See? They go with everything! I really love the nice warm color of a cognac flat! And since my exact flats are just about sold out, here are some options for you:
********** LEOPARD FLATS **********
Leopard is a neutral. SAY IT WITH ME LADIES. Leopard is a neutral.
Think it. Say it. Believe it.
I remember when I first started this blog (4 years ago now), one of the first out of the box purchases I made for the blog was leopard flats. #iwaslivingontheedge In fact, I bought a pair from Target (because they were very inexpensive), and I just wasn’t sure if I would wear them or not, so I didn’t want to spend a lot of money. I now have 4 leopard shoes total: 2 pairs of leopard fats (this pair and the pointy toe pair seen below), leopard wedges (a great option HERE), and leopard ankle booties (options below).
This picture was from about 3 years ago and was taken on the front porch of our old house. I LOVE the Kelly green and the stripes with the leopard. It is one of my favorite combos EVER.
Here I am with a graphic tee, white jeans, and my MUST HAVE DENIM JACKET. (Sidenote: If you don’t have this jacket yet, WHAT THE HECK are you waiting for?!?) 😉
This is from last year. Plaid and leopard? BRING IT!
With my Karen Kane asymmetrical top and $18 necklace!
If you have been too scared to try leopard shoes, DON’T BE! I promise that they will kick up the sass level in your outfits, but they really do function as a neutral!
My pointy toe leopard flats seen above are sold out, but I also have THESE (pictured in the graphic!) and absolutely adore them! Several leopard options found here:
********** NUDE FLATS **********
Now it’s time to talk about the most comfy flats I own. And they come in 12 colors. TWELVE. And I’m not the only one that adores these shoes. There are 727 5 STAR REVIEWS on the Nordstrom site. That’s pretty dang impressive. A reader pointed out that she (and others) sized up a 1/2 size in these shoes, but they were true to size for me, so make sure you read the online reviews when making your sizing decision!
These nude flats were actually named a SHOULD HAVE BEEN A MUST HAVE by me earlier this year. These are the flats YOU NEED TO HAVE if you are on your feet all day. I’ve had readers tell me they have these flats in as many as 5 colors! Go read the reviews and see for yourself!
Here I am wearing them earlier this year with my lilac jeans and chambray shirt.
Paired with jeans and a pleione top.
Paired with a leopard belt and a striped Caslon tee.
I loved the nentral look when I paired them with this grey layered sweater. UPDATE: GIRLS! This sweater was from last year, but it is now restocked! You can find it HERE! I would recommend sizing down, I’m wearing an x-small. The back is GORGEOUS (and the peekaboo opening is sheer), so know that you will have to wear a cami (I size up to a medium) with it! This is definitely one of my very favorite tops from last year! SO EXCITED it’s available again!
These flats are even cute just with a sweatshirt!
And here I am with a basic tee (only $24 and comes in 6 colors!) and jeans a couple of weeks ago. And the bag matches the flats pretty perfectly!
I’m telling you, if comfort and versatility is what you are looking for, THESE are the shoes for you.
So there you go, girls! I hope this post was helpful and that you all found a pair or 2 that you would like to try! Do me a favor, if you have any of the above shoes, please leave a comment with your thoughts. I know lots of readers love to hear what other people think about items besides just me. Thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post. Have a great weekend y’all!

I say this every year but remember the Harvest Party when I’m wearing sandals and you’re wearing riding boots? That would be me dressing for weather and you dressing for the season. Hahaha!
Beth B says
I would love a pair of Tieks but, after the Anniversary Sale, I have to hold off on buying them. Have you ever worn them? Would love an opinion on them – comfort, durability etc. Thank you!
Sheaffer says
Hi, Beth! I don’t think they are worth the money! I have two pair (sent to me by the company), and I still reach for my Sam Edelman felicia flats! The Tieks are comfy, but to be honest, I don’t think they are more comfy than my Felicia’s at all! Now, I will say, I’ve heard that women that have “problem feet” (not sure what that entails) swear by Teiks. Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Narci says
Girl, that dress and those booties are darling on you!!! So cute for Fall! Also, I have to say that all of the shoes you talked about are super comfortable too!! Love them all!!
Jackie T. says
I agree!! I love all of my SE Felicia flats! I think I have 6 colors now. I take a half size larger in them and based on reviews most people do size up a half size as well…just something to consider.
Sheaffer says
Thanks for the tip, Jackie! I actually added that info into the post after seeing your comment!!! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Shay Shull says
Um, I don’t even know where to start! You in that floral dress…amazing! All of those transitional shoes are perfection year around but you’re right…they shine during transitional weather. And I love you in the stripes with the green cardi. Happy Friday sweet friend!
Jenny says
I’m a teacher and am on my feet all day long. I own multiple pairs of the Sam Edelman Felicia flats, as do several teachers at my school. They are the best! I think I’m going to need to get the leopard today.
Christina says
Great show round up! I couldn’t imagine not having leopard in my closet. I snagged the halogen pointy toe lace up ones after loving my blush pair so much. They come today!!! I got my first pair if shorelines and I just don’t know. The elastic on the top digs into my foot. I’m hoping the looses up a little. 1/2 a size up was too big. They are sticking cute though!
Ashley says
Can you share the links to your gray layered sweater and that neutral colored sweatshirt? 🙂 so cute.
Sheaffer says
Hi, Ashley! I’m so sorry, but they are both old and no longer available. The grey sweater was Chelsea28 from Nordstrom, and the sweatshirt was from Lou and Grey! xoxo, Sheaffer 😉
Sheaffer says
Ashley! I just checked and the grey sweater is BACK IN STOCK! I am adding the link in the post right now!!!!! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
denise says
I am SO excited! I have been pining away for this sweater since you got it last year and it’s always been sold out. I just ordered it in two sizes to see which one works the best! Yippee!!
Any info on the gray crossbody bag you’re wearing with the sweater? I’m interested in a gray bag for this winter.
Sheaffer says
Hi, Denise! It’s from GiGi New York!!!!! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂

Can we talk about socks with the booties? What is the best option other than no socks with smelly feet? I bought the booties during the anniversary sale but HATE when booties “eat” your socks. Help??
Sheaffer says
Hi, Chelsea! If the booties are perforated or have cut outs, I think your only option is no socks. Are you talking about a different pair of booties?
chelsea says
Yes! The Lucky Brand Bashina’ Perforated Bootie, which you really can’t see through but that are perforated. So no socks, unless maybe tights with a dress in fall??
Sheaffer says
Hi, Chelsea! Yes! That’s exactly what I would do! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
kelly says
I love the leather tote in the picture with the gingham shirt, where is it from? Thanks so much!
Sheaffer says
It’s from Barrington Bags! I love it too!
Allison says
Those shoreline converse are going on my birthday wishlist! Love all your options for shoes.
cassie {hi sugarplum} says
Holy Moly that’s a lot of amazing style inspiration!!! I love every shoe choice, and you look daring in everything!! I usually match my shoes to the season, but adjust my tops to the weather. Does that make sense??
Erin says
Oh, yes, thanks to your recommendations, I have the white shoreline Converse, the leopard Sam Edelman flats, just purchased the NEW Sam Edelman flats in the deep brown (I think the color is Saddle), and still using my BP booties that you recommended from last year. ALL great picks!! I’m going over to check out the gray sweater now!!
Julie says
Hi! I’ve been eyeing these TOMS peep-toe perforated booties because I thought they’d make a great transition shoe. I’ve hesitated because I’ve had TOMS peep-toe wedges that were extremely uncomfortable, but really cute. I don’t do uncomfortable either, like you. 1) Have you tried these on, and if so 2) what are your (or any reader that might see this) thoughts?

Thanks!
Sheaffer says
Hi,Julie! I’ve never tried them on, but I’ve heard that they are comfy! I think I’ve heard that there summer wedges aren’t comfy. Is that what you had that weren’t comfy?
Julie says
Yes, the summer wedges were what I had and were not comfy at all (lots of blisters). I’ll be the guinea pig and try the booties and let you know. Thanks for the response! This is my first blog comment and I didn’t really expect it to be so interactive. Fun!
Diana says
Sheaffer, you are queen of the leopard! I bought my first pair of leopard flats at your recommendation and love them of course. My favorite all time look on you is the white jeans, leopard flats and belt, black or gray t- shirt, the kimberly AC necklace and utility jacket. That is perfection in my book!
Sarah says
The dress? Darling! The booties? So cute! Plaid and leopard? Love it!
Katie says
Great post!! So, do you think you could do a post about how to wear your jeans with booties?? What jeans are best- do you roll them or do they tuck in!? I really detest the winter and shoes since I feel like my jeans never work well with tucking into boots or figuring out how to wear botties. Could you help a sister out?? Thanks! 🙂
Sheaffer says
Hi, Katie! You’ll be seeing a lot of booties in upcoming posts! Either wear them with ankle jeans or cuff your jeans. I think it’s best to show a tiny bit of skin between the end of the bootie and the start of the jeans. Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 😉
Jen says
Hi! Where is the cognac cross body bag from that you’re wearing with the chambray top and lilac jeans?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Jen! It was from Nordstrom, but it’s been sold out for awhile. The brand was Elliot Lucca! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Kelli says
I’ve been pining after the papyrus shorelines since last summer. I’m so bummed they didn’t restock! I’ve been holding out for a similar color.
Sheaffer says
Hi, Kelli! I can’t believe they didn’t restock them either! Boo! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Charity says
What type of socks do you wear with your shoreline converse?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Charity! Most of the time I don’t wear socks. Search “no show socks” on Nordstrom, and there are lots with good reviews! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Maddy says
I just love your style, and wish I could raid your closet! Do you ever sell on Poshmark or Blogger’s Closet?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Maddy! Thanks for the swee words, but I don’t. So sorry! 🙁
