In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, I wanted to have my friend Tracy over to the blog today to tell you a little about her story.
I took this picture of Tracy at her youngest daughters 6th birthday party a couple of years ago, which was 4 years into her battle.
She is an incredible friend, a wonderful wife, and an amazing mom.
AND she is a BREAST CANCER WARRIOR.
I’m so proud to be her friend.

Tracy has a FEEL YOUR BOOBIES message for all of us!
“You’re way too young to have
breast cancer!” I hear it all the time from friends, strangers, and even
medical professionals. Unfortunately, no
one told the mass that was taking up residence in my left arm pit (considered
the breast stem)!
breast cancer!” I hear it all the time from friends, strangers, and even
medical professionals. Unfortunately, no
one told the mass that was taking up residence in my left arm pit (considered
the breast stem)!
I was trying to take the world’s fastest shower while
lamenting the fact that I was blessed with the only two year old that I had
ever seen that refused to nap. Ever. Prioritizing which parts to wash before
the inevitable interruption of my spit-shine, I came across a lump…and it hurt.
I called my primary care physician immediately, not thinking cancer, but
thinking a clogged milk duct (I had weaned a few months prior) or swollen lymph
node. I had no time to be sick!

I hear stories all the time about women being brushed off by
their doctors. Fortunately for me, mine was very cautious (and amazing!). He sent me to a breast surgeon that very day
that biopsied the lump. It turned out to be a very aggressive form of breast
cancer. I was 29 years old.

Now I’m going to tell you a little bit about myself, lest
you’re thinking, “I wonder what she DID to get breast cancer so young”. I don’t have a family history. I nursed both
of my daughters. I don’t smoke or drink more than a glass of wine on occasion.
I’m not overweight, don’t exist on coffee or fast food, and I’m not mainlining
BPA. I’m a normal person…just like you!
None of the risk factors that you read about applied to me.

So feel your boobies! Really do it. Feel for changes, lumps,
bumps, thickening of the skin, changes in texture, nipple discharge…anything
that’s just not right. If you feel
something wrong, get to a doctor, and don’t let them brush you off. We have to be our own advocates! Because everyone knows, “you’re way too young
to have breast cancer!”

I know that we all need this reminder.

In addition to having Tracy share her message with us,
I also wanted to let you ladies see the bracelets she makes.
Tracy started making bracelets a couple of years ago when she was battling a serious case of neuropathy (numbness, weakness, and tingling) in her fingers as a result of one of her chemo treatments.

Tracy started making bracelets a couple of years ago when she was battling a serious case of neuropathy (numbness, weakness, and tingling) in her fingers as a result of one of her chemo treatments.
She fought through the neuropathy (it is pretty much gone now), but she enjoyed making the bracelets so much that she now makes them as a small side business.
They are $30 each (that price includes shipping), and although she has been hit hard with orders this month for Breast Cancer Awareness,
she has enough materials left to make 10 more of each bracelet.
she has enough materials left to make 10 more of each bracelet.
E-mail her at ooosparklyinfo@gmail.com and please specify if you want the cross bracelet or the pink bead bracelet. First come, first serve!
These make great birthday or Christmas presents if you have a neighbor, friend, mom, sister, aunt, neighbor, grandmother, etc. that is battling this disease right now. They are so pretty AND they are meaningful!
Get one for somebody to show your support, or wear it yourself to show your support!
Remember it’s first come, first serve!

In addition to Tracy’s message, I also wanted to highlight some companies that are participating in raising awareness! There are many companies out there that highlight particular products in October and then give a portion of their sales to research. Today I’m going to highlight several companies that are doing just that:
raising awareness AND raising money.
***NORDSTROM***
Click HERE for all of the products, but some of my favorites are below!
Click the number directly below if interested in a particular item in the collage.
She’s a Fighter hooded sweatshirt HERE (only SMALL left)
I’m totally LOVING The North Face Jacket with the pink script. SO FLIPPING CUTE.
I LOVE a pinky pink blush, and I love Bobbi Brown, so that one seems like a no brainer.
And I think I might just have to try that lip scrub.
Ooh!
I just found something else!
Look at the fab Under Armor “Race Together” v-neck HERE. And it’s under $30!

***THE LOFT***
LOFT is also getting in on the awareness and fundraising for what I think is the
3rd year in a row.
They have partnered with Guiliana Rancic again (a breast cancer survivor herself) and a famous jewelry designer to bring you some outstanding pieces.
Together with Giuliana Rancic, our first
Global Ambassador of the Live in Pink
MOVEMENT, LOFT created an exclusive
jewelry collection by Suzanna Dai — Giuliana’s
favorite jewelry designer. Now through 10/31/13, LOFT will donate 60%
of the
purchase price of these items to The Breast Cancer
Research Foundation®. Shop their collection
and join them in making a difference. (Due to the charitable initiative
related to this item, it is excluded from any promotional offers.)
These pictures don’t do this jewelry justice.
This jewelry IS GORGEOUS.
It would all be great dressed up with a little black dress, but it would also be just as perfect with a sweater and some jeans!

And do you see the earrings above? I’m giving a pair away!
These would make a WONDERFUL gift. Not only are the earrings totally gorgeous, but they come packaged in this really nice box (as do the necklaces in the collection also).
The box makes a very nice presentation.
(And because I know people will ask, click HERE for the sweater. It’s awesome. It has a shimmery studded sleeve, which would be GREAT with either black suit pants or pencil skirt, but also with jeans and booties. AND it’s 30% off right now!!!)
To enter the drawing for the earrings, see the Rafflecopter on the bottom of the post after you are done reading.
***ANN TAYLOR***
LOFT’s mama, Ann Taylor, also decided to raise awareness and funds with 2 sparkly items!

***Ralph Lauren***
Ralph didn’t want to be left out, so he stepped up too!

And in closing, I want to leave you with a simple message.
I’ve told you to wear leopard as a neutral…and you have.
I’ve told you it’s okay to wear black, brown, and grey together…..and you listened.
NOW I’M TELLING YOU TO
FEEL YOUR BOOBIES!
So do it!

I thought such an important message deserved a graphic.
(No, Andrea didn’t do this one. It would have been much cuter if she did it.) 😉
I would also like to encourage you to share this post with friends today. E-mail them the post or go to my facebook page HERE and press share. You never know, but a simple message like this one today could really help somebody out!
Here are some easy guides to help you FEEL YOUR BOOBIES correctly!

Great post! My mother-in-law is a 4 year survivor after (by her own admission) putting off routine obgyn visits and not "feeling her boobies". Then she came across a huge lump but still didn't do anything about it (again, by her own admission, she was scared to death). By the time she was diagnosed, it was a stage 3/4. Thank GOD it had not spread beyond her breast. And after aggressive chemo & radiation for a year, she is still here with us today to see her grandchildren grow up. Now she is a huge advocate for women taking control of their health care. Pretty sure she would tell you to stop what you are doing right now and FEEL YOUR BOOBIES 🙂

Thanks for letting me guest post Sheaffer…but an even bigger thank-you for taking the time to research companies that are really donating to end this disease. Too many companies slap on the pink ribbon this time of year and don't contribute anything at all. It's so disappointing. I'm sharing this with my support group of survivors under 40. Sadly there are hundreds of us…but they will love this piece! So well done! Thank you!

Your friend Tracey is beautiful. Her story touched my heart. I have never had breast cancer. I do know first hand what cancer is. My son was diagnosed with brain cancer at 16. We spent 11 months at Children's Hospital here in California where we live. I watched him pass away and miss him so very much. I go every year for a mamo. I don't think you can be to young to get one. I think that insurance company's made that rule up. I strongly agree with "Checking your boobies" and mamo's every year. Praying for your friend Tracey.
DetroitDuchess says
Thanks for posting Sheaffer! My grandmother and mother were and are breast cancer survivors. Watching my mom go through radiation was probably one of the scariest things in my entire life. Early detection saved her life and I hope if it ever happens to me that I will be able to catch it early on because of these precautionary measures.
