Today is the day that you nominate yourself, a friend, a sister, a daughter, a neighbor….
any mama with a child with special needs.
Today is a day to honor all of these moms who give so much of themselves to help their children.
Being a mom is of course rewarding, wonderful, lovely, and the best thing you’ll ever do…but it’s also really hard. And being the mom of a precious little one with special needs although also rewarding, wonderful, and lovely is extra hard.
The doctors appointments, therapy sessions, late night, early mornings…it’s all hard.
While working as a speech therapist in the schools, as well as privately in people’s homes, I had a front row seat to the constant selflessness that takes place each and every day with these moms.
I developed a heart for these mamas who gave everything they had to their children and their families.
They never really took time for themselves.
And they certainly never spent money on themselves.
So, with a little nudge from Candace, the idea for these giveaways was born!
It is so much fun to recognize and celebrate these VERY SPECIAL moms!
If you are new here and want to read an in-depth account of how this contest started way back in 2013, click HERE.
To nominate somebody (or yourself), you will simply leave a comment on this post.
You can nominate as many people as you would like.
You can just leave the name of yourself or the mom you nominate, or you can tell a little bit about yourself or the person you are nominating. A random number generator will be used to pick the winner, so don’t feel like you have to write anything. Many people just like to write something as a way to honor the person they are nominating!
The winning mom gets to choose where she wants to shop!
Please check out the stores and sites of all these generous ladies!

Their child’s superhero shirt gives me a lump in my throat every single time I see it. It has the cute kid shaped superhero on the front, and on the back it says:
Sometimes superheroes live in the hearts of small children fighting big battles.
And if you see in the upper right corner, after many requests from parents, Candace and her hubby created the adult version that has the figures and the saying on the front of the shirt. It’s precious.
Special mamas, special dads, and special kids all need these shirts!
(If you want to see Candace’s shopping trip last year, click HERE!)
Here I am in my Different Not Less shirt and my Autism Awareness baseball tee! LOVE both of them. There’s also a Warrior Mom tee in the baseball style that is super cute!

Haven't had a full night's sleep in over a year. This is truly a disease where the parents must give everything they have in order to be a pancreas for their child. I would love to win this giveaway. It would be so refreshing!

I am nominating myself. I feel rather weird about doing that, but then, why not me? My 10 yr. old son has ADD, ODD, and Attachment Disorder. It has been a very, very long frustrating and arduous road for him taking various medications, and seeing doctors and therapists. I have had it stressful, too. Unfortunately, the world is very unkind to these kids and their parents, too. We're told we are bad parents who can't control their kids. One horrible woman told me I should be ashamed to take my (then 2 yr. old) son out in public. That is one of many comments which have stuck with me for the last 8 years. I internalize all of my son's struggles as my own and it has caused me stress and strain in my marriage. It's hard to love others when you don't love yourself. I would enjoy taking some time to think about me and getting this gift card will help to do that. We just got a Nordstrom here last fall and I know it offers some spa-type of services. I would use the $ for that. I don't want clothes, I just want to relax and escape for a while. Thank you!

Love this! My friend, Lee has triplets. Two of the three are autistic. One is non verbal and both will forever need Lee or their sister Kathryn to care for them. I absolutely LOVE your special momma's giveaways and have been waiting for one to pop up to nominate one of my heroes, Karie Phillips. Karie is a mom of two boys to Walker (5) and Weston (3.5). Once a healthy boy, Walker was plagued with uncontrollable and unrelenting seizures that have stolen his speech, ability to walk, eat, play, communicate, etc… This sweet boy began with one seizure on July 3rd, 2014 and now has suffered from thousands (pretty much all day, every day now) with no cure and no treatment relief. Karie is an amazing Christian woman who has shown so many of us what faith truly looks like when it's lived out loud in the hardest of times. Anyone can trust when life is smooth, but Karie and Andy cling to their faith and their God without ceasing. I'd love for this blessing for Karie as it'd be one of the first and only things that'd be just hers in so long. For a momma who can no longer work or follow her passions outside of caring for Walker 24-7, this gift would be hers alone and would help recharge her batteries and pamper someone who gives and gives until she's almost depleted. Thank you for considering Karie Phillips!
Here's Walker's story: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/walkerphillips

So I feel weird nominating myself, but I'd love a little pick me up after what has been the absolute hardest year of my life. We struggled with infertility for years, and after lots of treatments, welcomed our precious boy into the world 4 years ago. This past year diagnoses and symptoms began flying at us left and right, and all culminated in a diagnosis of pervasive developmental disorder – a child who has all the markers of autism except the verbal and social delays. Every single day is exhausting and we don't see the light at the end of the tunnel yet…maybe someday!
Haley says
I don't know if you will see this but i know what you're going through (with the diagnosis part) and would love to support you. I'm a few years further in this journey and could gladly be a support. If you're interested, my email is HaleyT84@gmail.com

They had some stressful times this past holiday season with two of the younger children being sick and having to do short stays in the hospital. She is so devoted and such a good mama, I would love to be able to gift her with a prize like this to recognize all she does for her kids.

I would like to nominate my daughter, Michelle Coleman. There is no finer mother than her. She always puts her family ahead of herself and everything else. Because a much hiigher paying job took too much time away from her daughter, she quit that position and went back to a Government one where the pay is much lowetr but when she leaves it onFridayshe knows the time will be spent at home without interruption with her family. All of her vacations are spent doing what her family wants not her. She is continually giving them support in every way possible for what they want out of life. She would gladly sacrifice anything for her family. There is no one I know who so unconditionly loves her dsughter. I could not be more proud of her

The youngest was born to the same momma before his due date. She is on continuous oxygen and she has to be carried or wheeled most of the time. She is nonverbal and has to be feed via Mickey button. She has learned to walk with much assistance. Stefanie takes care of these kids with help from her husband but no other help. They continue to act as foster parents when needed.

I nominate Katie Rice, of Jacksonville, FL. She and her husband dealt with infertility for many years, so they began the process of adoption. After pouring thousands of dollars into the first adoption, the birth mom backed out after the delivery. Katie was devastated as she had been preparing her heart for this and had the nursery completely ready to go. She and her husband didn't give up hope and eventually began another adoption with a birth mom who struggled with addictions and was in jail. After pouring thousands of dollars into this adoption, having baby showers and getting a new nursery ready, this mom also backed out after delivery. Katie was absolutely devastated again and gave up the hope of becoming a mama. Fast forward four months later and the birth mom changed her mind. Katie jumped at the opportunity to take this baby she had already fell in love with. Ansley Claire has many special needs including lissencephaly, but shows everyone each day that they don't define her. She has defied the odds many times by outperforming doctors expectations. Katie loves Ansley more than anything and is committed to doing everything she can to help Ansley develop as much as possible. After many hardships and MUCH prayer, she is the mama to beautiful Ansley Claire Rice. You can see pics of sweet Ansley on Katie's Instagram @getfitkatie. She deserves this and so much more!

I would like to nominate my very best friend Michelle Amond Yost. I will tell you she was put in my life purely by chance but in the end it was by design. Our daughter's were both transferred into a kindergarten neither of them were supposed to go to, they ended up in the same class at the same time and we ended up becoming very best friends. Her very amazing 10 year old son has autism and every single day for the past 4 years I have watched her parent him with a silent grace I didn't know was possible. She doesn't make excuses for him (which I love) and she fights for every single thing he needs. I had no idea that after watching her day in and day out it was preparing me for what would happen in my own life. My youngest daughter was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder this summer and I was thrown into this world that I didn't know, but then realized I had been preparing for the past years. She has sat with me through appointments, fighting for my sweet girl to get the services she needs. Then she goes home and has her own world. To say I'm grateful would be an understatement. I couldn't do this life thing without her. Not to mention she just lost 60 something pounds and looks amazing and could so use a new wardrobe. She is everything to me. And Shaeffer I did not think it was any possible to love you any more than I already do!!❤️

I am nominating my mom. At almost 66, she continues to care for my mentally challenged sister. While times have changed greatly in the 34 years since my sister was born, I have watched my mom going from standing on the sidelines (because that was what was done back then) to becoming my sisters biggest advocate. Special needs kids grown into special needs adults. The challenge and care never end. I think she deserves some TLC because as she should be worrying about her retirement, she can't as she must continue care for my sister.

Instead we begged him to fight and we prayed.
Our Aiden bug is blind, deaf, has CP, short gut, failure to thrive, is like a newborn and has a rare aggressive form of epilepsy.
BUT he is loved, he loves, he is alive!
He gives so much to our family.
We are blessed he is our boy.

Beka is a God-fearing, home-schooling, clean-eating, beautiful person with a HUGE heart! This week our family was sitting around the dinner table talking about generosity. My little guy didn't fully understand the concept, so my husband says, "Hey, buddy…it's like Ms. Beka…(and then he went on to explain)." Every time I think of 1 Cor 11:1 where Paul says "follow me as I follow the example of Christ," my mind goes to Beka.

I would like to nominate my wife Marianne Cox who has championed our autistic son through elementary, middle, and now high school. He is moving forward to completing his high school diploma, faithfully serves in his church community, and has earned the respect of his peers and teachers as a kind and hard working young man. Marianne has guided our son as well as our family in a better understanding of kids with special needs and how we can do more to move them forward in life.

This is one of my favorite things that you do! I am entering myself- a mom of 5 (through birth and adoption). Two of my children have medical needs-one with a heart condition and one with Spina bifida. We have been through two major surgeries, lots of therapies, medications, health insurance battles, and more doctors appointments than I can count. My kids are a great blessing but caring for children with medical needs can be tiring and feeling isolating. Thanks for thinking of us and celebrating us!

She rarely has time to pamper herself, and I know she would love it. Thanks for sponsoring this. It's a beautiful thing!

I would like to nominate Kimberly Easterling. She has two children with Down Syndrome. Last year her youngest (with DS) was diagnosed with leukemia. To say that this last year has been challenging is an understatement. However through all of these experiences her faith in Christ has kept her positive. One of the hardest things that she has had to do was to go back to work due to huge medical bills. Sweet Mary still has chemo and thankfully her Granny is able to take her and care for the kids.

I would like to nominate my own mom, Margarita. As a working mother, I could not have raised my 2 little ones without her. Even at her age, she never says "no" or "I'm a little tired" when I come calling for help. And I'm convinced it's because of all the time she spends with the kids that she stays so young. Every time she watches them, I come home to her amusing stories of things the kids did or said. She plays with them (like REALLY plays) and gets down to their level. They love her, and so do I. No one will ever love my kids like I do, but if I can't be there, my mom is the next best thing!

I would like to nominate myself…My five year old daughter was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes just after her third birthday. This day changed our lives forever. A diagnosis of Type One Diabetes has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle, and there is nothing you can do to prevent it. Currently, there is no cure. People with T1D must manage the disease by injecting or pumping insulin several times a day, every day. But insulin is not a cure. Each day, every day, we have to carefully monitor my daughter's food and insulin intake to maintain a careful balance and avoid high or low blood sugar reactions that can be life-limiting or life threatening. My daughter is the bravest, sweetest, most loving little girl I know and such an inspiration to all those around her ❤️

So awkward, but me. Between my baby needing a DOC band (helmet for head shaping) and my 2 year old's physical therapy since he was unable to walk until 20 months with the help of AFOs, doctors appointments for extensive food allergies including peanut, and lack of weight gain, and eczema…this mommy is pooped. I cry daily and pray for his sweet little body to flourish and grow. My entire pantry is full of foods free of the top 8 allergens that a toddler MIGHT eat and it is exhausting and EXPENSIVE! I wouldn't trade my two boys for anything. My 2 yr old with all his issues is happy as can be and gives the best kisses and hugs.

I would like to nominate my sister, Lindsey. She is mom to a total of 9 children – 7 babies who were carried by different people and 2 she carried herself. The first 7 all have varying degrees of disabilities from
ADHD and seizure disorders to developmental disabilities resulting in SDC placement and every therapy under the sun. The oldest just left for college and the youngest is 6 months old. She shuttles them all between three schools (because she advocated for the most appropriate placement for each child), speech, OT, PT, and psych appointments…pretty much on her own because my brother-in-love is a Correctional Officer at a prison and works 16 hour shifts some days to support his family. My mom is an aide in an SDC and I am a pediatric speech language pathologist and so I know first hand that there a lot of deserving mom's out there and they are all my heroes. Email: kern.jenn@yahoo.com (I can't remember my gmail password)!

I am nominating my dear friend, Jeannie. Her daughter, K, is 5 years old and has mitochodrial disease. There is no cure for mito and the symptoms vary frequently so it's a disease that seems impossible "to keep up with." K could be just fine one hour and near death the next…and Jeannie's primary job in life is simply to keep K alive from one day to the next. K is a FIGHTER though, and has overcome so much in her short 5 years! She is literally a walking miracle and a testimony of the grace of God! In addition to being a "life guard" for K, Jeannie is an amazing, much beloved high school English teacher who POURS in to students. Jeannie gives her all to everyone she meets…and it would be SO BEAUTIFUL to give her a bit of respite with this wonderful prize package. Jeannie inspires me to no end and deserves pampering and more. Thank you for this opportunity!

I would like to nominate my mom, Wendy Kozma. She gave birth to a special needs daughter 27 years ago, my sister. I have watched my mom selflessly work with my sister. I remember as a child going from physical/occupational therapy visits, speech, and doctor appointments 5 days a week. My mom never gave up on my sister and she continues to care for her to this day. My mom never treats herself to anything and she deserves this. She is the most caring and loving women I know! ?

We all know children is the most rewarding gift but also the hardest thing you will ever do in your life. Meghan is our child's best advocate, supporter, and of course mom. I hope I haven't missed the cut off for nominations! I would like to nominate my sister, Kelly. In August her husband suddenly passed away. She has three amazing sons, one who is autistic. She's been so strong as she has pulled herself and her three boys through this terrible tragedy. She's had to go back to work full time which has been hard on the family since she had been home with the boys for the past 5 years. The holidays were a tough time for them, with both her and her husband's birthdays in November/December as well. If anyone deserves to get a little spoiled, it's her. She is an amazing mother and an even better person and I think she could certainly use some pampering!!!!

It is always so emotional reading through these entries. What has really touched me this time is reading the posts from adult children who are nominating their mothers as they've had a front-row seat to watching them care for their sibling. Wow. Very touching.
I'd also like to nominate a woman I've never met, Jenny Siegel. Jenny's family lives in my hometown of Lubbock and we have lots of mutual friends. Her healthy, active, precious son suffered traumatic brain injury after falling out of a golf cart he was driving. Their lives changed instantly. Luke was in the hospital for 6 months and went home two weeks ago, still with a very long way to go. The dad, Tim, actually retired from coaching TTU tennis so that he could spend more time with his family. 20 days later, Luke had his accident. They seem like such an amazing and genuine who has endured so much. You can follow their story on FB at Pray for Luke Siegel.

I would like to nominate my sister in law, Dana. Dana is an amazingly sweet and giving Mom and person. She is the mom of sweet 10 year daughter with ADHD and is on the Autism Spectrum who has more food allergies than you can count, and a very smart and athletic 5 year son. I nominate her because of her tireless efforts to exemplify the perfect Mom. When her Army husband was deployed to Iraq, she continued to work with her daughter getting her back and forth to appointments and counselors numerous doctors. That is when she was diagnosed. She prepares all of her daughter's meals, works to make sure she is on grade level and more. She is extremely patient and loving to her at all times. Because of the sacrifices Dana has made her daughter has made significant gains in academics and behavior. I think Dana is deserving because she rarely shops for herself. She always says, I need a makeover, but she doesn't have the time or money to ever get it done. Most of her time is spent either working or taking care of her children. I think she would be so honored and surprised. Thank you, Sheaffer for thinking of special needs Moms. I have wanted to fill this out for Dana since 2013 when you first started this. Well, today is the day~ PS. Your blog about the Bachelor seasons always makes me laugh out loud and tear up – FOR REAL.

I want to nominate my friend Holly for the special mama giveaway! Holly is a friend and coworker of mine. One of her children is 12 years old. Her daughter had a stroke while she was still pregnant which caused her to have cerebral palsy and profound/complete deafness. I have only known Holly for 3 years but I see the frequent travel involved for so many doctors' appointments in Dallas (5 hours away) and the constant care her daughter needs. Last year, her daughter had to have emergency surgery due to a bowel obstruction as a result of an umbilical hernia. She has a HOST of other medical issues that require her to take a pretty significant time off work to care for her daughter. She is going to Dallas for scoliosis surgery in the next month and I can't even imagine what a boost this would be for her! She is such a special mama and friend to me!

There are so many deserving moms! It makes me so sad! I have to say, I have the mom of all moms that deserves this prize. My cousin's wife, Shannon, has not 1 but 2 children in the cancer ward at OU Children's Hospital. Her 6 year old, Kaden, had a rare form of brain cancer as a newborn and is now severely disabled from all the chemo they dumped in his brain. They just found out his cancer is back and there isn't much hope that he will live much longer. A year ago, they found out there perfect little one year old son, Jase, has this rare form of brain cancer also. He has been through a year of chemo and has another year to go. Even with that, they are almost certain the cancer will return at some point in his young life and there will be nothing more they can do to save him. As if that wasn't enough, a doctor urged Shannon to get tested because they were concerned that this was a hereditary cancer based on the fact that her only two blood born children have the same rare cancer. Well, come to find out, they did find a mass and are removing it next week to see if it's cancerous. So now, the mom of two young sons who are on the cancer floor of Children's Hospital, may also have cancer. Shannon has a step daughter, 10, who has spent half of her life in hospitals with her family watching her brothers suffer from cancer. It's a terrible, terrible story and almost unbelievable. She deserves this and I hope she wins!

Maci (almost 4 years old) has cerebral palsy, seizures, complications with her feeding tube, and eye sight problems, just to name a few. She has not walked or crawled yet and has therapy 5 days a week. My sister works full time in the midst of all of this. Her husband just had a major back surgery and is out of work until he is able to recover fully (up to 1 year recovery time). I sure hope she wins this because she so deserves it!!! Thank you!
