Happy Monday, everybody!
We’re kicking it old school over here today, and I’m totally excited about it.
Years ago I used to do a series called Shopping With Sheaffer. I would go to the mall, try on tons of clothes, and take y’all along for the ride! I wouldn’t buy everything, I would just try on pretty much everything that struck my fancy and share it all on the blog. And I’d of course let you know what I ended up walking away with for myself. I’m not sure why I stopped doing the series, but I’ve decided to bring it back. And I’m thinking I’ll make it a monthly series again!
This month I’ve got TONS of sweaters and a coat, because this coming weekend I’m headed to New York with girlfriends! The word “excited” doesn’t adequately convey my level of emotion about the trip. I’m next level PUMPED. I needed some new sweaters and a new coat, so I tried on and ordered just about everything I could get my hands on. And great news, I had awesome luck!
For the trip, I’ll be wearing the following items that you’ve being seeing on me for the last couple of months: these ankle jeans, these step hem jeans, this camo jacket, and these sneakers. So, even though I’m wearing boots with most of these outfits in the post, I’ll definitely be wearing sneakers on the trip. We’re going to be doing lots of walking, and I just want to be comfy! I will say, now that there’s rain in the forecast, I’m considering springing for these or these. Or maybe even these Sorels in the “elk” colorway. Thoughts? I want my footwear to be super comfy and for my feet to be dry.
Let’s start off with the coat search. I tried on several that weren’t worth posting. But then I found this one and knew it would be perfect for New York, especially since it looks like it’s going to be rainy and in the 50s a couple of the days we are there. It comes in 5 colors, but I opted for this sunshiny yellow/gold. I love the dark buttons and drawstrings, and it’s lined with a darling navy and white stripe. It’s ADORABLE and very well made. It’s a heavy rain coat, so I will be able to use it throughout the fall and winter. I’m thrilled to be adding this type of coat to my closet and know I’ll be happy to have it for years to come. For size reference, I’m wearing a 6.
I also have this leather jacket for the couple of nights that we have to dress up a bit, but this sunshiny beauty will be what I’m wearing during the day. And if I get separated from the group, it will be easy for them to find me. #justkidding #kindof

I wasn’t actually looking for a new bag for my trip, but when I saw this one, I knew I needed it. I have several cross body bags that I love, but most of them are too big and too heavy (before anything is even in them)! Of the small ones I own that would work size wise, one is raw leather and the other is a grey suede, so neither would hold up to the elements.
I’ll be carrying this bag during the day. It will hold my phone, a small zippered pouch with my credit cards and license, and some make up. It’s light as can be, but will totally hold everything that I need it to!

After stumbling upon the coat and the bag, I was feeling really great about my finds! Then it was time to start trying on some sweaters! I loved the deep wine color of this slouchy turtleneck. I’m wearing a medium petite in this picture because that’s what they had in store, but I think I would prefer a regular small (so it would be a touch longer and a bit less boxy). This sweater is great with jeans, but it’s definitely nice enough to be worn with a pair of nice pants to the office.

Similar to the sweater above, this Free People sweater has excellent reviews and comes in 5 colors. I’m wearing an x-small here, so you can see how large it runs. If you go with your normal size, it should definitely be long enough to wear with leggings. It’s expensive, but seems to have a bit of a cult following.

This colorblock sweater is soft, comfy, and screams Fall with the warm pumpkin, brown, and navy tones. I’m wearing a small and it’s still a relaxed fit, so I would say it runs large. It also comes in a more neutral beige and grey color combo that is very pretty. I think it looks fine with black jeans, but it would look awesome with regular blue jeans and some cognac or taupe boots!

I took a break from sweaters for a moment and tried on this plaid tunic. I’m wearing a small here and it too could definitely be worn with leggings. It’s obviously over-sized and quite slouchy.

This boucle tunic sweater is very flattering with the side seams, and it comes in several colors. Again, I’m wearing a medium petite here because that’s what they had in store, but I would prefer a regular small, or maybe even a regular medium if I was going to wear it with leggings. It comes in 6 colors.

Do y’all remember my post last week about $40 and Under Fabulous Fall Finds? I featured this necklace even though I hadn’t yet seen it in person, so I had to try it for myself when I saw it in store! It comes in silver too and is a great buy at under $30!

So it’s going to be sweaters, jeans, and sneakers during the day…but we have two nights when we are going to dress up! One night I’m going to wear the dress and leather jacket combo from this post to dinner. The dress leaves plenty of room for a food baby. I’m always thinking, y’all.
And on our Broadway night, I think I’m actually going to wear this floral tie back blouse….but I’ll dress it up with these coated skinny jeans (I did take a pair of scissors and trim the frayed hem) and these dot mesh heels. I had purchased the pants and the heels for my L.A. trip, so I’m happy to get to wear them again! I’m not sure what earrings or clutch I’ll be wearing yet. I’ll throw this leather jacket (NOW ON SALE!) on top if it’s cold!
This blouse is much more special in person than it appears in pictures. It has a swingy fit, blouson sleeves, it ties at the neck in the back, and the pleats on the front are gorgeous. The bodice of the blouse is lined, but the sleeves are sheer, which is so pretty! For size reference, I’m wearing a small, and there’s plenty of room. I’ll wear this more casually too, but it will dress up very easily for Broadway!

In addition to trying on sweaters in store, I also ordered several online. Three that I ordered are already sold out, so I took those out of the post. This sweater came in after I had already finished my post, but it was one of my favorites and I kept it! You’ll see it in New York pics for sure. And I ordered this one over the weekend from LOFT. My sister convinced me I needed to.
I showed this chenille sweater on Facebook the day I ordered it for myself, and when it came in, I fell in love. It’s SOFT AS CAN BE, incredibly cozy, and so cute with the colored stripes of varying size. It truly is velvety soft, and it’s going to look just as great with jeans and sneakers as it does here with my Hunter boots and my taupe wedge OTK boots. For size reference, I sized up to a medium to make sure it wouldn’t be too tight across the chest. It’s wide, but it drapes nicely.

I’ve got another striped sweater for you. This one is cashmere. #fancy
It comes in cream, a light blue, and a dark grey as well…but I couldn’t say no to this darling stripe. Not that I even tried. It’s going to be DARLING under my yellow rain coat. I’m wearing it on it’s own, but I think it’s so cute how the model has it layered over a chambray shirt. I sized up to a medium, and I’m glad I did.
With the wide band, it definitely looks great worn out…but it also still looks really cute with a half tuck so a little bit of a leopard belt can peek out.

And saving one of the best for last…check out this colorblock cardi!
For size reference, I got the medium since the medium was categorized as a 4-6. I was worried that a medium might be too big in a cardi like this, but it wasn’t. I definitely needed the extra room.
Gosh, I sure am a fan of a boyfriend cardi. This one is quite warm, and I love the proportions and the colors of the stripes.

THE GIBSON x LIVING IN YELLOW COLLECTION IS NOW LIVE!
Y’all know I’ve been shouting my love for Gibson from the rooftops for a couple of years now, and today is the day that my friend Erin launches her new Gibson x Living in Yellow Cozy Collection! An entire collection dedicated to being cozy? SIGN ME UP! I got a sneak peek of everything when I was in L.A. earlier this month, and they even sent me a couple of things to to try for myself.
Y’ALL! THIS COLLECTION IS THE ULTIMATE IN COZY, and who doesn’t love being cozy.
Here’s my first Gibson x LIY piece. It’s a wrap top, and it’s sooooo good. I got black and am glad that I did, although a different color would show the draping better (I love the blush and the teal too). It’s so flattering with such a great fit, and this cozy piece is totally elevated with the cross over styling. And although I’m not wearing anything under it here, it would be great with one of Erin’s lace camis paired with it! I will be wearing a cami under it when I wear it out because there’s not a snap, so a cami will prevent any possible wardrobe malfunctions. For size reference, I’m wearing a small.
This top would be perfect for date night or a girls night out, but it would be just as great for lounging at home with joggers.

This tunic isn’t their signature cozy fleece, but it’s still cozy, and it’s super cute! I requested a medium in this plaid tunic from the collection, but I shouldn’t have. It’s oversized, and even my regular size small would be good for me for both jeans and even leggings I think. It comes in 2 colorways, but I was drawn to this pink and navy plaid. I love the collar, the pleated detailing, and the way it falls and drapes.

I also love this off the shoulder top IN COZY FLEECE! I have it in purple, but the leopard pattern is DARLING, and I predict it might be the first piece to sell out! Wear it with your favorite bralette, and you can be sassy and cozy at the same time! This is another top that you could dress up for a night out, or pair with joggers for a cozy night cuddled up on the couch. I’ve also got my eye on this fleece pullover. I love the neckline, the thumb hole styling, and the kangaroo pocket.
Erin’s last collection sold out in a hot minute, so take a minute to see it all, and don’t delay if there’s something you want!
That’s it for today y’all! Today’s post featured items that were all from Nordstrom, but future Shopping with Sheaffer posts will feature various retailers (I’m thinking LOFT, Anthro, J Crew, and Gap). I haven’t shopped at GAP in a awhile, but I’ve complimented a friend twice lately, and both times she was all “It’s from GAP”. Her cuteness had me checking things out online again, and I actually ordered this sweater in the pink stripe and this scarf from GAP for today’s post (and possibly for New York), but they haven’t arrived yet. I thought they would both be so cute with the yellow coat! If you have any other suggestions for future Shopping With Sheaffer venues, please leave them in the comments!
See you back here on Wednesday for our What’s Up Wednesday link up! October Bonus: Favorite Halloween Costume!

Good morning, I wanted to share my thoughts about rain boots in NYC when walking (a lot of walking). I tried this once and it was very uncomfortable. I have Hunter boots and Sorel boots. Both fit me well but have no support and are “clunky” ( is that even a word). Anyway, when trying walk fast or even semi fast (getting to a broadway show) I felt like I would trip at times in them. Also, my feet hurt really bad after a couple of hours. Rain boots have extra give in them and just didn’t support my feet. I would recommend a good leather sneaker. If it gets wet, it will dry and still look okay. If it’s heavy rain invest in blondo waterproof boots with a low heel. One last thing, if you want to try a delicious breakfast try Norma’s. I like it much better than Sarabeth’s and the portions are large. You may want to consider splitting a meal. It’s located around 57th near Central Park. Have a great time!

Hi, Gena! Thanks for the tips! xoxo

Love this post! Can’t wait to see some “Cozy”!!

You should be the model for the color block boyfriend cardi because it looks adorable on you and I LOVE it!!! When I went to the Nordstrom website and saw it on the model, I thought it was just “ok”. Have a great time in NYC!!
Sheaffer says
That’s so sweet, Linda! Thank you! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂

Everything looked oks so cute!! Another waterproof boot option is the L.L Bean Bean boot. They run a full size big with plenty of room for socks. One downside is you leave in a few days so might not get them in time… Jave a fun trip!!

I’m going to Napa for wine tours in a couple of weeks. Are those taupe wedge boots comfortable?
Sheaffer says
They are actually VERY comfortable, Kelly! Surprisingly so!!! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂

Yay! I’m also headed to NYC this weekend – my husband is running the NYC marathon as a charity runner for our adoption agency! I’ve never been and have been stressing over what to wear, so this post is PERFECT!
I actually ordered that Joules coat last week, in the pink color! And for rain boots, I got the Lucky Basel booties. They look and feel like a regular cute ankle bootie but are a rain boot. Very lightweight, not heavy and clunky at all like my hunter boots, and more comfortable for walking than my Sorel chelsea wedges. They could use a smidge more support so I’m adding some insoles, but overall super comfy and cute. AND they’re on sale at Nordy’s right now! 🙂
Have a blast with your girls!!
Jessica says
I’ll be in NYC for the marathon too!! I hope your husband has a great experience – It’s my favorite marathon to date!
Beth says
What size do you have in the leather jacket? I usually have a problem with the sleeves being too long.
Sheaffer says
Hi, Beth! I have a medium, but I haven’t taken the tags off yet. I’m trying to decide if it is a little too big!
gail wilson says
That burgundy tunic top screams, ‘Sheaffer in NYC’!! Everyone there wears black with a pop of color – it’s perfect!! I agree on the footwear – find something waterproof like a Blondo sneaker or boot. NYC is a walking city an your feet will thank you!!
While in NYC, you have got to try John’s Pizza on Bleecker – it is THE BEST!!
kate says
You chose well ?? on the raincoat!! My teen girls have worn theirs on a cold rainy ?? trip to Normandy and Paris in the spring as well on campus and many horse shows in rain cold or both!! ?? I also looove the Joules Golightly packable! The coats were originally bought for Alaska and have done their job well ever since!!
I have Sorel Out n About boots but because I am short with short claves they don’t alwys look grest on me but they are comfy! I just ordered the Sorel Joan of Arc wedge to try for our cold and rainy trip to Lexington KY (not as glamorous as NYC!!) as well as the Ugg Pax and Jeffrey Campbell platform chelsea.
Sheaffer says
So good to hear, Kate!!! xoxo

Hi Sheaffer: I just returned last night from NYC with my 2 daughters aged 28, 24. I felt like we stood out so much because we wore color and my girls are blonds. We dressed for the theater Saturday night and felt so out of place. It was a sea of black, grey and brown. No eye contact and no one smiles. I guess we blasted them with our Southern Charm and style. Just an observation but I was surprised as NYC is suppose to be a fashion center. Did not see that at all. Would not change a thing about always trying to look your best no matter what the environment is. Have a great trip.
denise says
I was thinking the same thing…every time I go to NYC I feel like I stand out as a visitor because I actually wear color some rather than only gray and black. The yellow rain coat will make you the sunshine in the gloomy crowd! 🙂 I bought a navy blue packable Joules rain coat to wear on our Alaskan cruise in May and it was perfect. I stayed completely dry and the jacket was perfect to wear over sweaters, hoodies, and even a thin puffer coat. Have a wonderful trip!

I went to New York over spring break (the weather was not spring ish). I ended up wearing my wedge Uggs everyday……..they were so comfy & warm. My feet did not hurt a bit!! (Also, pretty sure I bought those because you showed them on here!)
Sheaffer says
Hi, Ashley! YES! I was actually talking to Erika this morning and I think I’ve decided to take those as my 2nd pair of shoes! I do love them and they are soooooooooooooo comfy! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂

I love this post and yes to Shopping with Schaefer! Thanks

What size did you get in the coated skinny jeans? The website advises if you are between sizes to go down a size due to the stretch with wear. Thanks!
