Today is all about GREAT BASICS. Because even though it’s still hot as blazes where I live, I’ve started ordering some fall pieces. Pieces that can be mixed and matched into lots of different outfits. Pieces that will work from early fall all the way into winter. In fact, some of them are good all year long. I know it’s going to be cooler for a lot of y’all soon, so I wanted you ladies to be ready to head into fall with some new key pieces for your wardrobe.
And here’s the cool thing, to make these outfits today, maybe you don’t even need new pieces. Like I said before, the outfits are made up of great basics, so it’s totally possible that you have similar pieces to these in your closet already! If so, then hopefully today will just give you some outfit inspiration!
You’ll notice that in the first 4 looks today I’m highlighting a pair of light grey jeans , these heeled booties, and this awesome new necklace. The necklace is adjustable, and it will go with almost any outfit you can imagine.
Look #1: Striped Tee with a Military Jacket
A striped tee with a military jacket has been one of my go to looks for the last several years, and I still plan on rocking it this year as well. I like how this particular tee has a peplum hem and a tiny stripe, so it updates the whole look a bit! It comes in a white and black stripe too, and it’s only $35.

Look #2: Simple Tunic with Great Earrings
So I think this is the 3rd year I’ve talked about this tunic, and I’ll continue to talk about it as long as they carry it! This “quail” color is a gorgeous light lavender. I don’t have anything else in my closet this color, so I thought it would be a nice addition…but it currently comes in 6 other options as well. It doesn’t show wrinkles, and it’s just a wonderful piece to have in your closet. Over the last several years I’ve added black, wine, olive, hot pink, and now this lavender color to my wardrobe. I’m telling you, it’s freaking awesome. AND GET THIS. It’s on sale for $27.90. One more thing…I DO NOT dry clean this, and I know most of y’all don’t either. I wash it, pop it in the dryer for like 5 minutes, and then either lay flat or hang to dry.
The earrings are just $22, and they really tied the entire outfit together! The ivory, grey, blush, and gold combination is just so pretty!

Look #3: Basic Black Sweater with a Little Extra Something
Everybody needs a basic black sweater in their wardrobe. Well, this one looks like a basic black sweater at first glance…but check out the sleeves! It’s hard to tell in the picture below, but they are 3/4 length (my favorite), and they have these cute little ties! In year’s past I’ve shown you how I like to mix black, brown, and grey together…and this outfit does it perfectly. This tote is larger than I like for an everyday tote, but if you prefer a really big bag, you will love this one! And I love how it takes the guess work out of mixing these colors.

Look #4: Blush and Grey (with Stripes)!
Blush and grey is one of my absolute favorite color combos. This pretty blush cardigan comes in 8 other colors too (and has FANTASTIC reviews), but the blush was just perfect for the grey jeans. A cardigan like this is a definite staple piece for everybody’s wardrobe. And the Madewell tees are definitely a wardrobe basic for me as well.

Look #5: White Tee and Denim Jacket
You first saw this outfit about a month ago, but I thought it was a great one to show again. These jeans are a much darker grey than the ones in the previous 4 looks, but they are most definitely grey (even though the lighting is messing with them and making them look black). I named this jacket a MUST HAVE almost 4 years ago, and I still reach for it all the time. It’s soft and stretchy, and not boxy at all. If you prefer another color, you can actually choose from lots of color options from this same brand.

Now before you go, three more things.
All of my dress dreams came true with this dress. #darling #comfy #roomfortacos #cheap
Sizing Tip: This dress runs VERY large. I’m almost 5’4″, and I’m wearing an XS Petite. However, the XXS Petite actually fits me a bit better, it just wasn’t available at the time in black. Y’all, I think we all know that I’m not an XXS Petite, so you definitely need to size down. In fact, I would suggest sizing down 2 full sizes.

I love that quail colored tunic! I have three of them and wear them often. They are great to wear with leggings… they cover the all the right spots! I’m waiting for your post on tunics to wear with leggings, so I can have a couple of different styles to wear with my leggings, as I wear them constantly.
BTW, the link to the white tee is not working for me, I get the error message Page Not Found…. however, I searched for it and found it.
Thank you for all you do for us, Sheaffer!

can you please tell us again how the tunic runs for size ~ Thanks!
Sheaffer says
Hi, Lura! I’m wearing a small, which is true to size for me). It’s oversized, but I personally wouldn’t want it fitted. If you don’t have a large chest, you can probably size down. Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Melynda says
What size do you recommend in the tunic? True to size? That’s an amazing price!

On your new Frye bag did you use something to protect it from the rain?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Kim! I haven’t done anything to it yet, but it might be a good idea. Can somebody else comment on this?

How does the peplum tee run in size? I am obsessed!
Sheaffer says
Hi, Deej! I’m wearing a small, so it’s true to size!

I love it all! I might be getting that crossbody brown bag! I got a brown Michael Kors purse just 2 years ago, and the straps are already peeling and fraying! I expected more from such an expensive purse. I love the look of a crossbody purse, especially a simple brown one like the one you shared. It would go with everything!

My prior experiences with denim jackets were that they are stiff, boxy, and uncomfortable but I took your advice and purchased one from Kut from the Kloth and I.LOVE.IT. I don’t own a military jacket and you have highlighted so many of them. Is there one that you have found that is light and as overall fantastic as the Kut from the Kloth denim?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Shannon! It really is THE MOST AMAZING jacket!!!! The Madewell jacket in this post is amazing as well, but last time I checked it is only left in large. Fingers crossed that’s the size you need. It’s swing fit makes it very comfy! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
