If you’ve been reading the blog for even just a short amount of time, you probably know that I have a “thing” for military jackets.
I have 3 of them.
Yep.
You heard me right.
THREE.
And I wear all three of them all the time.
One is short with a little peplum bottom, one is just plain and simple (that’s the one you are going to see today), and one is long with a drawstring at the waist and a sweater back.
I love all 3 of them, and I wear all 3 of them.
And truth be told, I’m actually looking for a fourth.
I’m fully aware it sounds ridiculous.
But I am in fact looking for a fourth.
Let’s take a look back to August of 2012, when I started this blog.
At that time I had one military jacket in my closet (the one with the peplum bottom), but I never wore it. Like never.
When I was getting dressed, I just never reached for it.
all of her military jacket inspiration.
military jacket looks good with everything!
It’s then that I had a shift in perspective when it came to my military jacket. I quit trying to “match” it with items in my closet, and I literally started throwing it on with just about everything.
Because I’m telling you, it seriously goes with everything.
AND NOW I KNOW IT TOO!
So, I started to wear mine.
I could throw on my military jacket and elevate the look immediately.
The jacket made me feel stylish and put together, even when I was just wearing jeans and a t-shirt!
I got this year both sold out.
It’s the exact same jacket, it’s just a little bit lighter in color. Everything else is the same.
Here I am in my jacket that I bought late last summer.
With a quick look through my phone, I found 5 fall looks I had created with that one jacket.
It really is a great and super versatile jacket!
FOR SIZE REFERENCE, I’M WEARING A SMALL IN THIS JACKET.
military jacket HERE
*(I’m wearing a small.)
It’s the same jacket, just a bit lighter in color for spring and summer!
striped tee HERE
And just in case you wanted a better look at the tee I was wearing under the jacket, here you go!
striped tee HERE
It’s striped, it’s v-neck, it’s longer in the back than the front (yeah!), and it has a roomy fit! I think it looks SO Cute with my Converse (HERE).
#somebodyneedstobefired
Drew Barrymore looking totally chic and put together in a military jacket and scarf.
So, I thought I would pair the jacket with several different spring scarves!
pink floral scarf HERE / soft pink infinity scarf HERE/ black floral scarf HERE
It’s such a great and easy look!
(I think the black floral scarf with it was my favorite!)
This jacket definitely spans the seasons!
You saw me in all of my fall looks above at the beginning of the post, and just now with these bright and springy scarves. And now I can’t wait to pair it with tanks and ts for spring and summer wear! I can guarantee you even when it gets super hot this summer, I will still be carrying this jacket (or my denim jacket) with me everywhere I go (to the mall, to dinner, to the movies, etc.) I used to do the same thing with cardigans, but now I do it with my light jackets. They are the perfect thing to throw on if you are just a little chilly, and they go with everything!
If you want some other options, I’ve got some for ya!
I actually am loving this sleeveless vest HERE.
And this jacket is a great option!
ESPECIALLY for those of you that would prefer a longer cut to cover your hiney. 🙂
Expedition cotton twill jacket HERE
It’s only $88 (which is a great deal for a jacket you will wear pretty much all year long),
and it comes in 3 colors!
Here’s one review that gives a peak into sizing:
I bought the military green and love it. The
length is perfect – covering the rear. It’s very well made and is a
great addition to the casual side of my wardrobe.
I bought a small and
it fits perfectly on my 5’5″, 130 pound frame.
I tried on these 4 my last trip to Nordstrom
light and springy HERE (I’m wearing a small.)
longer option HERE (This is the jacket directly above, I’m wearing a small.)
cropped bomber military jacket HERE (I’m wearing a medium, but a large might have been better.)
plain cropped HERE (I’m wearing a large.)
And in my quest for my 4th jacket, I ordered THIS one after seeing it online.
I liked it, but I felt it was more Fall than Spring, and since my sweater back one is very geared towards fall, this one ended up going back. Still, I wanted to feature it because I loved the fit and the touches of black with the metal hardware.
Click HERE. It’s a great jacket!

50% off sequin sleeve jacket HERE
I am totally loving this one!!!!! Think of it with skinny jeans and heels! Or just a t-shirt and tall boots! I think it’s a really great look. There are only 2 reviews online, but both are 5 stars.
max and mia cotton anorak HERE
Loving this one too. Totally casually chic.
And some more…..
Another option! This could be my 4th!
This one is a bit longer than my others and has a REALLY COOL collar!!!!!
If I ask for it for my birthday, I don’t think it should even count.
(I’ll be linking to the white t-shirt in a post next week! My mandarin moccasins are HERE.)
can also be cinched up (there’s a draw string inside the collar) and
it’s DARLING all cinched up.
Again, for size reference, I’m wearing a small.
practical to add another one to your closet (for the record, you’re
wrong)…but if you like the jacket and just don’t want it to be green, YOU’RE IN LUCK!
So, I’m dying to know!!!
p.s.
I need to get something off my chest. 🙂
You remember when I named a new MUST HAVE shirt (click HERE for the post, click HERE for the shirt) a couple of weeks ago?
Well, I stand by my decision. I PUFFY HEART LOVE THE SHIRT.
I’ve probably worn it like 6 or 7 times already and I love it so! 🙂
And I’ve heard from lots of you ladies that you love it too.
HOWEVER….
I received lots and lots and lots of e-mails saying that you would prefer that I stick to Nordstrom for MUST HAVES.
Anyway…y’all talked, and I’ve heard your pleas.
*And for the record, y’all talk really loud! 🙂 Which I love.
Some might call us “opinionated”. I prefer the word “passionate! :)*
In the future, I will of course continue to feature things from places other than Nordstrom, but I will really make an effort for MUST HAVES to be from Nordstrom.
I get it.
Free Shipping and Free Returns are worth their weight in gold.
That being said, I still think THIS is a MUST HAVE shirt!
If you decide to get it, remember to order 1 size down. (I’m wearing a small.)
Again, click HERE for the original post.
And don’t worry, I will continue to highlight items that don’t come from Nordstrom (I’ll still be shopping at LOFT, GAP, Goodnight Macaroon, Milk and Honey, and other shops)….but I will really try to make a MUST HAVE from Nordstrom!
(No promises though…the heart wants what it wants.) 🙂 Ha!
I love my passionate readers! 🙂

It is THE most versatile little piece of outerwear one can buy. I wear my three (that's right baby), three, all the time. It totally elevates any old boring look and also tones downs outfits that might be too dressy or fancy for everyday outfits. Love this post. Love it. Love. Love.

Yes! Yes! Yes!! I thought I was the only person who owned more than one military jacket! I have three. One is longer with drawstring waist, one is shorter, waist length, with a cool frayed edge on the neck and sleeves and the last is a mixed media with black leather sleeves. They are super versatile and I always find myself reaching for one! I also love to layer with them….next time throw on a fur vest over the top!! Definitely takes it to the next level! Thank you so much for your posts…I live and die by your words lol!!! Can't wait for spring preview posts!!!!! I heart Pinterest too!!

When you told me you were buying a pair of Converse I was all, "whaaaaat???"
NOW I get it, friend. I get it.
You look ADORABLE and fresh and Spring-y in your Converse and I love them.
xoxoxo! 🙂

I have to agree 150%. I have 2, and like you I've been searching for one more. I think I'm going to get the one you highlighted with the sequined sleeves! It's so fun and obviously different enough to justify adding a 3rd to my closet. Thanks! Rebecca
Alison @ Get Your Pretty On says
Bring on the military jacket weather! I'm so ready to pair mine up with some stripes and a floral scarf. LOVE all of this inspiration today!
Narci says
That sequined jacket! I love it! I have three military jackets, as well–they really are super versatile!
Tab & Erika says
That is your look!!! Shay has colored shorts and wedges. You have military jackets!!! LOVE that about you!
clatk says
I have 3- a normal one, the sweater one you featured, and a vest I got for $12 (yes!!!) from Kohl's. love them all!!
Stacy P. says
I have a lighter camo print jacket from J crew that I wear all the time! It is a but longer w/drawstrings to cinch in the sides. I like the print on me better than the plain….AND my 14 yo daughter has a plain military jacket and mom CAN'T be in the same thing as her! ☺️
Becky says
Love your blog… unfortunately we do not have a Nordstrom in Buffalo. 🙁 Please keep featuring items from Gap and Loft!
Sheaffer says
Hi Becky! Don't worry, I won't! BUT, you should totally be ordering from Nordstrom still. With free shipping and free returns, it's the easiest shopping EVER!!!!!! 🙂
Katie @ Team Skelley says
I am going against the crowd – I like non-Nordstrom Must-Haves. Not that I dislike Nordstrom at all, but the one thing that Anthro has going for it that Nordstrom doesn't is that they accept Pay Pal online, which just simplifies life. And they run store-wide sales. But you do have to pay shipping and if you don't live close to one, returns probably are a little hairy. I live 2 miles from Anthro but 2 hours from Nordstrom, so I am probably biased. 🙂
stacy loggins says
Because of you, I love my military jacket, I got it on a clearance a couple of years ago and didn't wear it much until I found your blog! it was like a brand new jacket again!! love these ideas you give!!
This Gingers Journey says
I would say Military Jacket is for sure a signature Sheaffer look 🙂 I have one and really like it! I asked my fiancé to go pick something out for me to wear the other night (I was more curious to see what he would come up with) and he came out saying that my military jacket was on of his favs! So ladies if you don't have one run to your nearest Nordys or pull out the laptop and get to ordering! Happy Monday!!!

I love military jackets too! I started collecting them about a year ago. I just bought my 4th a couple of weeks ago – a khaki one, and I ordered a military vest this weekend. Eek! Love them, and I'll start wearing them again all the time…as soon as it warms up just a little here in Texas. Thanks Sheaffer! Love the blog!
{Hi Sugarplum!} says
You look adorable in all of those jackets! I have just one, and it's a pretty light colored khaki from Loft a few years ago. Funny thing is I only pull it out when we travel? It looks so pulled together with a bright scarf, so I feel like I've made an effort while traveling. I guess I don't like looking cute and pulled together at home?!
Laura says
I have my military jacket on today and I'm just now reading your post!! Great minds think alike! I like Nordstrom's because of their great customer service (don't have one in my area, either).
Genn says
Hi Sheaffer! I love all of your jackets! After discovering your blog, and how badly I needed to own a military jacket too, I ordered the Rhubbish one from BP. I love love love it. I realized I wore it so many times in the first couple weeks I owned it. But I see now, hat I must have another one. I still love my BP one, but I'm tall and I'd love to find one with a little bit longer sleeve length.
Love your blog! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Kim Kauffman says
I don't have a military jacket, can you believe that! LOVE that Guess khaki one. Might have to keep my eye on that. Oh and the picture of the girl on the far right in the stripes and military jacket is from merrick's art!
Stacey says
OK you've convinced me. Ordering from Nordstrom's right now.
SaRaH says
Love love love this post!! Thank you! I'm a new reader–are you still doing a goodnight macaroon discount each month? I have a few things in my cart and was waiting for today to roll around to purchase them! Thanks so much!
Laura Fuller says
I have been hesitant about this military jacket thing until I see it available in khaki and navy. That's something I need to be a part of! (And, your're right: whoever styled the khaki jacket online needs a pink slip!)
Hannah says
I LOVE a good military jacket and loved this post! I may have to go buy a new one now… 🙂
susanv says
I have been saving a Nordstrom gift card I got for Christmas … I am going to order my miliatry jacket now!! I love the olive/army green color. What size are you wearing?
Sheaffer says
I'm wearing a small Susan!
Jenna says
Ive totally been a skeptic. But now that i see them in navy, i think im in! you see, my fare skin looks terrible with the military green. Thanks for all of the resources!
Karly says
I love all of your looks and inspirations! Do you (or any if your readers) have any suggestions for a nice, long under shirt to layer with? That is one staple I have the hardest time finding. My goal is to layer with a military jacket, cardis, etc. I'm in a transition phase post-baby and not feeling too stylish and would live to find a nice long shirts to transition into spring with leggings and skinny fit jeans to hide all my hard work from the last year from growing and (hopefully) shrinking! 🙂 Thanks so much!!!

I think I am going to have to order that jacket. Thanks girl!!! You are awesome!!!
Because Shanna Said So says
Okay, you now need to get a printed one…like my cheetah!! 🙂 You would rock it!!
Patty Grimm says
The Neon necklace from Bauble Bar is no longer on the website! ACK! Why, oh why didn't I order it last Friday when you first featured it?? *now softly weeping into my laptop* 🙂
Christina Mendoza says
Love your blog, your taste and style and I love me a military jacket! I have one that is long, warm one with an awesome collar, another light weight one with ruffles on the collar and sleeves. I, too, am looking for a 3rd. I love the one you highlighted today. I tried it on and I may need a petite. I'm 5'2" and I would like the length a little shorter so it could be more different than my ruffle one. It looks perfect on you!!
Kathy Stevens says
I have two and LOVE them both. They are both green so I think I need a navy one, or khaki, or both?!
Joanna says
I love my military jackets- all 3 of them! And I can totally see myself buying more, especially that VEST! Love it! And I totally agree with Katie @ Team Skelley, I love Anthro, so you can keep doing MUST HAVES from there if your heart desires!! 🙂
Frances says
I like how you put the vest in as an alternative. I think a heavier military style denim shirt (in green, or camo) would also be a great substitute
Amy Kleis says
I have 3 as well and have really enjoyed them all, and for some reason that is not a color that goes with olive skin, but for some reason with different color shirts and scarves it has helped take such a bad tone and make it look good, plus I think they have brought down the actual military green color to new lengths. I also love the "must haves", but I LOVE the variety for I LOVE to shop all over!
Belle and Grace says
I'm so glad you posted this, because I'm on the hunt for a new military jacket! I have one that's camo, that I love, and I want to wear it everyday! But camo doesn't always work (boo). This is the perfect jacket! I may have to run out to Nordstrom tomorrow!

Military Jackets are so "Grown Sexy". Just had to say it. I love them all!
Sharon A says
Hi! Haha, just saw the comment above that "military jackets are so 'grown sexy'!" LOVE IT! 🙂 Laughing!!!
I found a great military jacket at Old Navy at a great price… but I am also going to check out the longer option you showed from Nordstrom. And I agree with everyone else who was "passionate" about the topic – I prefer Nordstrom because you truly can't beat their FREE ship and FREE returns! 🙂 I just hate paying shipping and then a re-stocking fee at some of the other stores. Thanks so much for your fun, awesome posts, Sheaffer! xoxo
Mary says
I have 3…one from J Crew Factory (<3), an olive vest, and a caramel colored one that looks great with leopard prints! Love the short navy one…put it in my shopping cart while deciding….:)
justchrys says
I am so glad you have featured the military jacket. I have a cute one in my closet from the Loft from 4 years ago.
Also, I may be in the minority but I love your Loft and Anthro finds. I hope to see more in the future. 🙂 Thanks for all you do.
Shon says
Hi, I love this post and I'm reminded that I need to wear my military jkt more. What jeans are you wearing? I did not see a mention of them in your post. Thanks!
