I’m assuming you looked at and loved all of the pictures above,
but did you also pay attention to the text?
Lean in and listen carefully to the following lesson.
When wearing leggings,
THROW ON SOME BOOTS AND PILE ON THE LAYERS
If I could make the above statement flash and shoot streamers out of your computer,
please know that I would.
THAT my friends is the key to how to wear leggings.
At least for me.
BOOTS.
AND LAYERS.
Oh.
Wait.
There is one more very important key to wearing leggings.
Perhaps the most important.
If you hear nothing else I say for the rest of this post, hear this:
MAKE SURE YOUR CROTCH IS COVERED.
There.
I said it.
LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS PEOPLE.
Please feel free to take notes if you need to.
Layers can include several of the following:
a tank, a t-shirt, a tunic, a button up, a sweater, a cardigan, a scarf, boot socks, etc.
The list goes on and on.
LAYER IT ON PEOPLE
(FYI: I took it upon myself to take the notes for you.)
Now before we get to the layering part, let’s start out by talking about the actual leggings.
But here’s the thing, you MUST have a good quality legging.
There’s nothing worse than a legging that is partially see-through, that bags in the knees after a couple of hours of wear, or that doesn’t wash well.
So, if you are ready to rock a legging, here’s what you need to do first:
Invest in a good pair of leggings.
(And by invest…I mean spend around $40 instead of around $20. We’re not talking about having to drop a lot of cash, so don’t skimp.)
$20 makes all the different in the world when it comes to the quality of a legging.
Well, ladies…listen up!
I have searched HIGH and LOW, and I have found THE VERY BEST leggings.
I have named them a MUST HAVE.
Find the Hue ultra-wide waist band MUST HAVE leggings HERE.
I have the black and grey and seriously don’t know how I lived the last
28 years of my life (ahem) without them. Because I’m 29 (ahem).
I have no words.)
THESE are the MUST HAVE leggings.
Like I said, I have them in both this dark grey and black, & I wear them both all fall and winter long.
They are a little long on me (I’m almost 5’4″), so I don’t wear them with flats. I only wear them with tall boots.
They aren’t see thru at all.
They hold their shape.
And even though I’ve already washed each pair lots and lots, they still look brand spankin’ new.
Here are just some of my leggings looks from 2013.
Click HERE for the MUST HAVE leggings.

All of you that own the leggings are JUST AS CRAZY about them as I am.
They really are a GAME CHANGER in the leggings world aren’t they?!?
For size reference, I’m a size 4, and I wear a small in these leggings.
For the record, even though I swear by the above leggings, I have received many e-mails about the Zella Live In Leggings HERE.
You might want to check them out too. Supposedly they are a better length for flats.
Thanks for the recommendation Kim. 🙂
FYI: They have 1,468 5 STAR REVIEWS.
Okay.

Let’s get the word out to the masses! 😉
I mean really. You can’t get more cozy than the above look!
Wait a second….you could if you added the blardigan! 😉
(They have added new colors at Nordstrom!)
Listen,
To own the blardigan is to love the blardigan.
And for those of you that are super new to the blog and have no idea what a blardigan is….
it’s simple.
A blardigan is part blanket and part cardigan.
And it’s a little piece of heaven right here on earth.
Do you
want something that you can wear at home for an entire weekend at home
in your pajamas, with a sick kid, and then throw it on and wear it to
work?
Not that I’ve ever done that.
Well, if that is something you’re looking for,
I probably have received over 200 e-mails (and I promise you that I’m not exaggerating) about this MUST HAVE.
My favorite is from the reader who said she wants to try to figure out how to shower in it.
Please commit this to memory.
Did you just spit out your coffee?
I don’t blame you.
LAUGHING. SO. HARD.
Thanks Andrea for the super cute graphic!
Hey, if you don’t listen to me on this important subject matter.
Listen to Ryan.
xoxo,
Sheaffer 🙂
Oooh, Wait!
This particular post is
getting so much traffic from Pinterest, that I decided to go ahead and
add the TUNICS post to the bottom so it could be a 1 Stop Shop!
#we’reallcrazyreally
#ilikeit
#crazylovescompany
After my repeat Leggings Are Not Pants post a couple of weeks ago (found HERE), I received many e-mails saying some variation of the following:
*Your first Leggings Are Not Pants post is how I found your blog in the first place!
*Now that I have these leggings, I’m not sure how I lived XX years without them in my life!
*I also received plenty of WHAT THE HECK DO I WEAR WITH MY
LEGGINGS NOW THAT I HAVE THEM? e-mails.
Well, never fear.
I’ve got this ladies.
helpful, but only one of the tunics I highlighted then is still
available now… so I wanted to update the post this year with new and
current tunics!
Tunics that you can find in stores today!
Tunics that are cute AND cover all of your lady bits.
😉
Yes, my friend Andrea is responsible for the above awesomeness.
Don’t you wish your friend was as funny and creative as mine? 😉
I mean, “adorable hiney”. Hilarious.
Let’s start out the post by reminding you of my favorite leggings.
(Just in case you just found the blog within the last couple of weeks.)
Click HERE for the PTMT MUST HAVE leggings.
Again, for size reference, I have a SMALL in these leggings but only wear them
with tall boots (b/c they are way too long for me to wear with flats).
I have the black and the grey, and I know many of you have the espresso also!
I’ve had them for a year now, and they still look AWESOME.
They don’t sag, they wash perfectly, and they suck you in without making it difficult to breathe.
Those are all WINS in my book.
I ordered LOTS of tunics so I could sift through them at home, style
them with different boots and jewelry, and find the most perfect ones.
I do have 1 problem though.
I ended up ordering 10 tunics.
And my plan was to keep 1…possibly 2 of them.
I hated 4 of them (that you won’t even see on today’s post), so that was actually good.
I’ve returned 6 already (4 that I hated, and 2 that I returned because I
just didn’t love them) because I had to get them off the ol’ charge
card.
But there are 4 still hanging in my closet.
4 that I LOVE and ADORE.
4 that I feel like I need.
I’ve decided I’m going to allow myself to keep 3 of them….because they
aren’t just for leggings, they will look awesome with jeans too….and I
know I will get my $ worth out of them.
Decisions.

SO SIT BACK, RELAX, AND GET READY FOR THE TUNIC PARADE!!!!
that make shirts shorter on me than on girl’s without big boobs and a
massive rib cage. So keep that in mind when trying to decide on the right size for yourself!

the trick, plus it has a cute pattern on it! If you are really long

It was also pretty body conscious. I liked it a lot, but I didn’t keep
it because I felt like I would always have to be sucking in when
wearing it.
If you don’t have to worry about sucking in (you go!), then you might really like this one!
Also from Bobeau, THIS hooded long cardigan. It’s plenty long in the front and back to pair with leggings!
(I found out about this when Jessica, a reader, e-mailed me to say it was her less expensive version of the blardigan!)

Click HERE for this Splendid jersey v-neck tunic.
For size reference, I was wearing a medium in this picture.
I ordered a medium because I wanted to make sure it was going to be super flowy, which it was.
I’d be interested to see if the small would have fit better…but I still loved the way the medium looked!

Okay…so those are all of the new tunics!
Now a review of a some of the tunics I’ve talked about before (that are still available).
and it looks awesome with the leggings.
I feel like I need a drum roll or something.
Or some guy in his own pair of leggings with a trumpet drawing attention to the unveiling of this fabulous find.
But since I’ve got neither….here it is.
If you don’t mind, just imagine some trumpet fanfare.

I have soooooo much to say! First of all, yes, if you get that needle-pointed on a pillow, please have one made for me too. Her email cracked me up! Second, I am so glad you had us slow down and re-read the sidebar to that graphic…I would have missed the importance of that statement. And third, I can't comment any more because I just bought my first pair of Hue leggings and now, I have to go buy all of your tunics and layers to go with them. BYE!
Meagan @ The Clanahan Fam says
I think I've read this blog so religiously now that I'm even starting to think like you. Totally was searching online yesterday for sweaters to wear for our family pictures coming up and found that same Anthropologie grey wrap sweater (looks blue to me online but what-ev). I kid you not, as I was debating whether to put it in my cart, I said to myself "I wonder if this is something Sheaffer would like & think was worth the $ to spend". ha! Clearly you do think it's worth it and now I will have to buy it. Along with some Hue leggings. 🙂
Christie says
"Make sure your crotch is covered," should be made into t-shirts and probably just handed out to the masses of women that are displaying theirs. Also, has Nordstrom brought you on board as their official ambassador? They totally should, you are making them a ton of money.
Courtney @ Missthirdgrade.com says
Guilty I ordered a pair
Thanks for sharing. I've been looking for the perfect pair
Meredith Anna says
My very favorite leggings come from White House black market.. I think they are around $30! They are nice and thick-no showing through when you bend over 🙂 you should check them out!!!
Debbie says
Coldwater Creek has some wonderful thick leggings, also. They're pretty close to pants. I love them! Coldwater Creek is back online and they still have the leggings. My drawer is full of Hue leggings. I've seen some great ones at White House Black Market, also!
Rachelle (http://pinksole.com/) says
I cannot stress this enough leggings are not pants so many people in south florida don't get it.

I SERIOUSLY have to know where the fisherman's chunky carding in look #1 came from, where I can get it! Your link goes to a similar Nordsroms sweater, but, not the actual sweater shown in the look. Help Schaeffer! Please!
Sheaffer says
Hi there! The actual Look #1 was from Pinterest, and I was unable to find the original source. So, I have no idea where the exact sweater is from. So Sorry! 🙁
Elaine~ Honey Pie Accessories says
I saw Andrea's picture this morning (of Ryan) on Instagram, and I thought, "Oh no, I'm wearing leggings today. Please tell me that Sheaffer thinks leggings are okay!" b/c I had no time to change my mind! Thank goodness I'm wearing them w/ a long tank, a layering black sweater, and cognac boots.. (sigh of relief) And, I bought the Loft dress yesterday! I've been waiting until it goes on sale- yay!!! I cannot wait to get it in!
Julie Heath says
Love this post!!! I can't wait to purchase some of these leggings! I am so tired of having that dreaded pair that is almost sheer or gets slightly baggy by the end of the day. BP & Hue here I come!!! Thanks Schaeffer 🙂
Shelby says
AHHH!!! So many wonderful ideas, and I FEEL FAMOUS now!! 🙂 haha! Thanks so much for the shout-out, and I also have to say this is the absolute most perfect post on leggings!! Now to go shop for some comfy layers stat! 🙂
Leigh says
"Make sure your crotch is covered." Best blog line ever! You really need to market that to all the companies who make leggings and all the stores that sell them. That's marketing gold right there.
I was just talking to some girl friends of mine this weekend about our leggings/boots/tank/long cardigan with a scarf look. This post was perfect timing. A girl can never have too many cardigans. That's my motto. Now I gotta go shop!
Alison @ Get Your Pretty On says
This was pretty much my uniform for the weekend – leggings and layers! Can't wait to pick up some more long sweaters to add to the collection.

This is hilarious and so true! I'm always saying this to my 13-yr. old daughter, who can actually get away with leggings and a shorter top. I tell her you might just walk out the door wearing tights.

Want that striped tunic!!!! like, now.
Sabrina says
Seriously–that last tunic you showed—the one that's out of stock…OMG!!! I neeeed that in my life! I've never in my life spent $88 on a tunic to wear with leggins…but you better believe I'm not scared to spend it on that!!!
Jen Pogue says
This post is AWESOME! Yes, yes, yes! Leggings are NOT pants! I could not agree with you more and I blogged a little about this topic recently, but you totally nailed it. And, if Ryan says so, then it's true. 😉 I'm off to check out the longer tanks that you have linked because those are on my fall shopping list.
Katie says
Alright, just ordered a pair of the wide-band leggings! I am a college girl but your blog still really appeals to me…one thing you see a LOT of on campus is leggings as pants. Ouch. Maybe I'll send them your way!

Hi Sheaffer, one of my favorite posts!! Everything is so perfect for our freezing fall days.
I have to send my FAVORITE leggings your way. They are the Zella Live in Legging. You buy them in active and they are a little pricier but the thickness and fit is totally worth it. Check out the reviews http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/zella-live-in-leggings/3035710.

Thanks Kim! I just added this information to my post! Thanks so much for taking the time to send it to me!!!

Tiffany {A Touch of Grace} says
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this post today Sheaffer! I have been on the hunt for a good pair of leggings (especially ones that don't cut in at the wrong spots) and this is a HUGE help! And I really do appreicate you informing people that leggings are not pants. I really hope ladies take that to heart and cover themselves up. It's just not right!
JenJen says
I so agree with the statement legging are not pants! Cover your crotch! As a high school teacher, I have noticed this fashion rule has not been taught to the high school age crowd- and I have even seen this on some older ladies! Thanks to you and Ryan for validating my thoughts! Also thanks for doing a lot of the legwork in my shopping. I live so far from a Nordstrom's and your suggestions have been spot on!
Brooke says
Great post! I love the way leggings look on others, but have never been brave enough to try them myself. I'm 5'3"–should I get a small? What size leggings do you get?
Sheaffer says
Hi Brooke! Your settings are set to "no reply", so I hope you check back here for your answer! It depends on the leggings. I'm 5'4" and I think all of mine are small. Hope this helps!

Amen and say it again…..LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS!!! I almost broke mine out yesterday!! It's finally time in Texas!! I hope the weather stays like this!! 🙂
Jeanne Rinnander says
Live in the Phoenix, AZ area…where we do wear leggings and long lightweight tunics (that cover the 'nether' regions….*wink*)…..but since there is rarely cold weather (now I am talking the 60's is cool and a rarity)….Boots just don't cut it here….I have seen leggings with both flats and wedges (and yes, longer tunics and very lightweight cardigans and long t-shirts) that look quite cute….so since most people here don't do "boots" does that make us a fashion faux pas???
Anonymous says
Living here in the Phoenix, AZ area where cooler weather or the need for boots is a rarity at best (high 50's low 60's is considered cold here)….boots just do not catch on here, in fact, most folks will look at you like you are crazy when you wear boots (even ankle length)…..yes, I have seen many who wear their leggings with a long lightweight tunic or long lightweight cardigan (that cover our nether regions…*wink*) with flats or wedges here….so I guess, we Arizonians are doing a fashion faux pas daily…*sigh*
Sheaffer says
Hi there! No, I don't necessarily think you are a fashion faux pas! I've seen other people pull off leggings with flats or wedges, I've just never done it before. Most of my leggings are cuffed up under a tall pair of boots, but I think if you have the perfect pair of leggings you could definitely pull them off with flats, wedges, even heels!
xoxo,
Sheaffer 🙂
Anna H says
Love your blog! I have a question! What do you think about the shorter Hunter boots? The tall ones seem a little too tall for me! They make it hard for me to bend my legs! Didn't know if I should get the shorter ones or find a different brand! Thanks!

Hi Anna! I guess it depends on where they hit you?!? Go to Nordstrom's site and search Sperry rainboots. They have some cute short options too!!!!

Oh my gosh, this had me laughing so hard. This is totally my pet peeve! Too many people wear their super thin leggings with a short top and visible panty lines! Leggings need to come with your instructions printed on the tag. To me, fashion rules don't generally apply to those under 20. That's time to experiment, wear PJs to class in college, etc. At UF I went to class in a wet bathing suit and Tshirt every day one spring. That's what being young is about. Also, to the Arizona people who don't wear boots, in Florida we wear leggings with cute flats too when it's not cold enough for boots. But we do cover our crotches now that we're over 30 and moms 😉
BebeA says
Hi! I'm curious about how to deal with tails… For instance, a loose tank underneath a shirt and/or sweater- it bugs me when there is a tail! Am I crazy? Is there a way to fix this? Any advice? 🙂
Sheaffer says
Hi Bebe! Hmmmmmmm. Most of the bottom layers I wear are tight. I don't guess I've ever had to deal with "tail". Anybody else have any pointers?
Shelley Polarbelle says
Love your blog and love your style. Being just a little taller than average at 5'8", most of those tops wouldn't be crotch coverers for me. Probably hip line and some would end at the waist. I find that frustrating obviously, ( my problem, not yours), but I wondered if you had any tall blogger friends who could tell me where to mail order crotch coverers. Everyone I know would be seriously indebted to you if you do. I've been searching my town for a month a d so far, can't wear any leggings out of the house, (and the urchins who live here would be so happy). So you see, I need some tall help to look cute like you. ?
Sheaffer says
Hi Shelley!
I wish I could help you out, but I've got nothin. I will totally keep a look out though! Thanks for the question!

This post is the BEST. I can't agree with you more!!! All the middle schoolers & high schoolers out there need to read this. Did you know that they BANNED leggings at our school (unless you are wearing a dress or long enough shirt/sweater) Too many girls were wearing black leggings with shirts that didn't cover their booty's and they had to change our dress code because of it!!!
April says
haha YES! I've been saying it for years. Legging are NOT pants, people! I work on a college campus and you will not believe the atrocious legging pairings I see on a daily basis.
{Hi Sugarplum!} says
I love love love this post!! I was so excited to get my first pair of leggings last year…i think they are the Hue bc I can hardly breathe in them the waist is so 'slimming.' But I soon discovered I had NOT ONE TOP that covered my crotch!!??!!?? Which is great in the world where you tuck things in, but not when you're trying to hide your lady bits. This year I picked up a super long tank which will hopefully work as the base layer. Thanks for all the great tips!

LOFT also has great leggings and when they run their 50% regular priced item sales, you can get a pair for under $20! The waistband isn't quite as wide as the HUE, but it definitely helps smooth out the muffin top ;).

Hi Leslie! I would suggest sizing up! Also, just a heads up, these boots are made for people with very slender calves. People with slender calves LOVE them, but others had to return them! Hope this helps!
xoxo,
Sheaffer 🙂

Hi Sheaffer! I just came across your blog today from this post online. First, you are ADORABLE!! Secondly, I also just did a leggings post on my own blog and I couldn't agree more, LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS!! They are a layer that should be layered and layered and maybe layered again! Thanks for the laughs! -Jessica

Anita Renfroe just came out with a hilarious song called "Those Ain't Pants". She's my favorite Christian comedian. You can view it on YouTube.

I agree whole heartedly on most points. Except the boots. I wear them with flats. I am barely over 5 feet. The idea that short girl can't rock flats us ludicrous. After all most ballet dancers are under 5ft4. Also I havevery muscular calves, and though I am only a size 6. I carry most of my fat in my thighs. Boots cut me off at an odd point making me appear heavier.

Yes yes yes! I wear leggings all the time (as pants or not who cares) as long as my crotch is covered! I'm 5' 8" and flats, boots, heels, whatever I feel confident in. And always statement jewelry (from my jewelry business).

omgosh so glad to see this blog that leggings are NOT pants. I thought it was just me showing my age but seriously every time I see someone wearing leggings with a top that doesn't come below the butt/crotch area I always think in my head "she looks like she left home and forgot to put her pants on"
sorry but even though I wear leggings myself (with appropriate length top or skirt) really they are just tights and certainly are not pants

Awesome blog! A few months ago I was at Soma Intimates to get new bras, and the sales person brought a pair of their slimming leggings into the dressing room for me (with a few tops too). At first I just ignored them b/c I have cankles and never dreamed I could get a pair of leggings on (without cutting off my circulation). However, when she took her sweet time bringing my bras, I tried on the leggings and FELL IN LOVE! They make my ankles look normal width, maybe even skinny, and they have a wonderful wide waistband. I was so excited and kept thinking about the fuzzy boots I had a home and how cute they would look together.
However, I've gotten very frustrated over the last several months as it is so hard to find wintery tops long enough to cover my crotch – and I'm only 5'1"! I was thrilled to see your blog with adorable long sweaters and tunics, but as your original post is almost a year and a half old, most the items are no longer available. But truly my favorite top of yours didn't have a link to begin with – it is the ivory one with the black and fuchsia stripes at the hem – I want that one! Would love an update when you get a chance with more links to appropriate length tops to wear with your leggings and boots!

Yes, I totally agree with this post. Leggings are not pants! Not at all!! And yes, you should really make sure your crotch is covered. That’s the correct way to wear your leggings!
