A pin from a post that was originally dated October 2013.
I was curious.
So, I dug into the archives (I always laugh when I say the word archives because it makes me feel important!) :), and I found out that this same post was the most read post on the blog.
LIKE THE MOST READ BY A LONG SHOT.
For example, most of my posts have between like 8,000 and and 20,000 pageviews.
And this post I’m talking about….it has over 123,000 pageviews.
And y’all. You’re going to die when you hear what post it is!
Any guesses?
Bueller? Bueller?
Drum roll please…………….
LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS!
Cue the applause!
Is it weird that I’m strangely proud of this?
I feel like together we might have played some small part in getting this VERY NECESSARY MESSAGE out to the masses!
Because y’all….let’s all say it together…..
Leggings are NOT pants!
So, I went back to the original post and made a couple of changes.
If a link was no longer current, I found one that was.
I also added some commentary here and there as well as some new items at the bottom of this post;
items that compliment leggings nicely. 🙂
So…..let’s all take a minute to review this very important post together!
And make sure you read to the end….because you are also going to get to see an e-mail from a disgruntled reader. Prepare to be at a loss for words. 🙂
**************************************************************************
I’m assuming you looked at and loved all of the pictures above,
but did you also pay attention to the text?
Lean in and listen carefully to the following lesson.
When wearing leggings,
THROW ON SOME BOOTS AND PILE ON THE LAYERS.
If I could make the above statement flash and shoot streamers out of your computer,
please know that I would.
THAT my friends is the key to how to wear leggings.
At least for me.
BOOTS.
AND LAYERS.
Oh.
Wait.
There is one more very important key to wearing leggings.
Perhaps the most important.
If you hear nothing else I say for the rest of this post, hear this:
MAKE SURE YOUR CROTCH IS COVERED.
There.
I said it.
LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS PEOPLE.
COVER YOUR CROTCH.
Needlepoint that on a pillow.
Please feel free to take notes if you need to.
Layers can include several of the following:
a tank, a t-shirt, a tunic, a button up, a sweater, a cardigan, a scarf, boot socks, etc.
The list goes on and on.
LAYER IT ON PEOPLE
LAYER. IT. ON.
(FYI: I took it upon myself to take the notes for you.)
Now before we get to the layering part, let’s start out by talking about the actual leggings.
But here’s the thing, you MUST have a good quality legging.
There’s
nothing worse than a legging that is partially see-through, that bags
in the knees after a couple of hours of wear, or that doesn’t wash well.
So, if you are ready to rock a legging, here’s what you need to do first:
Invest in a good pair of leggings.
(And
by invest…I mean spend around $40 instead of around $20. We’re not
talking about having to drop a lot of cash, so don’t skimp.)
$20 makes all the different in the world when it comes to the quality of a legging.
And ladies…listen up!
I have searched HIGH and LOW, and I have found what I believe is
THE VERY BEST pair of leggings.
I even named them a MUST HAVE.
Find the ultra-wide waist band MUST HAVE leggings HERE.
I have the black and grey and seriously don’t know how I lived the last
28 years of my life (ahem) without them. Because I’m 29 (ahem).
They aren’t see thru AT ALL.
They hold their shape.
And even though I’ve already washed each pair lots and lots, they still look brand spankin’ new.
The band sucks you in, but it still manages to be comfortable.
I’m telling you, your muffin top will love this ultra wide waistband.
Not that I would know (cough cough).
Click HERE for the MUST HAVE leggings.
I have no words.)
Here are just some of my leggings looks from 2013.
For size reference, I’m wearing a regular small in the tunic that is on sale.
All of you that own the leggings are JUST AS CRAZY about them as I am.
They really are a GAME CHANGER in the leggings world aren’t they?!?
For size reference, I’m typically a size 4, and I wear
a SMALL in these leggings.
They
are wayyyyyyy too long for me to wear with flats, but for some reason I
don’t like wearing leggings with flats. I only wear them with tall
boots, so I just cuff them up and throw my boots on!
One of the most recent reviews follows:

belly– I feel sucked in but not suffocated. I ordered on the
recommendation of the Pinterest Told Me To blog- these leggings are a
cult favorite over there! They didn’t disappoint.
(And as always, thank you sooo much for mentioning the blog in your reviews girls!)
For the record, even though I swear by the above leggings, I have received many e-mails about the Zella Live In Leggings also. You can find them HERE.
You might want to check them out too. Supposedly they are a better length for flats.
Thanks for the recommendation Kim. 🙂
FYI: They have 1,468 5 STAR REVIEWS.
Okay.

I’ve got some current links for you!
I mean really. You can’t get more cozy than the above look!
Wait a second….you actually could get more cozy.
How? Bueller? Bueller?
If you added the blardigan! 😉

Listen,
To own the blardigan is to love the blardigan.
And I just didn’t feel right about dedicating a post to leggings without also giving a shout out to the blardigan.
For those of you that are super new to the blog and have no idea what a blardigan is….
it’s simple.
A blardigan is part blanket and part cardigan.
And it’s a little piece of heaven right here on earth.
And all of us that have one are cuckoo for it.
Do you
want something that you can wear at home for an entire weekend at home
in your pajamas, with a sick kid, and then throw it on and wear it to
work or to a night out?
Not that I’ve ever done that. 😉
Well, if that is something you’re looking for, the blardigan is for you.
I probably have received over 200 e-mails (and I promise you that I’m not exaggerating) about this MUST HAVE.
My favorite is from the reader who said she wants to try to figure out how to shower in it. 😉
And fyi, this past week they added new colors at Nordstrom!
That’s opal on the left and white/pewter ombre on the right. Click HERE.

And just this past weekend Emily Henderson (a sweet reader) put a message on the PTMT facebook wall, and it sparked quite the conversation!
Please commit this to memory.
And because I feel like there is still a lot to be learned with this subject matter, we are going to have another very important post not this coming Friday, but next (September 26th).
Mark your calendars girls!
I had a post last November entitled OPERATION COVER YOUR CROTCHAL AREA.
I’m going to update this post with new tunic options for you ladies on September 26th;
Tunics that properly and adequately cover your crotchal area.
In order to prepare (in the post you will get to see me in all of them), I ordered the following 8 tunics.
Yes.
8.
I ordered 8.
(I won’t keep all of them, only my favorite 1….let’s be honest….probably my favorite 2.)
a) belted french terry jacket HERE
b) black and white tunic dress HERE
c) denim popover HERE
d) pale pink snood pullover sweatshirt HERE
e) recessed late sweatshirt HERE
f) jersey v-neck top HERE
g) free people cowl neck pullover HERE
h) striped high low tunic HERE
So ladies.
Help me spread the word!
I would love it if you would pin an image from this post onto one of your Pinterest boards!
Just hover over your favorite image on this post until the little Pinterest “p” graphic pops up….
then click it…and pin it!
I want to see how many more people we can reach with this “Leggings Are Not Pants” message. 🙂
In two weeks I will report back and let you know how many more views the post has received.
Come on! It will be fun!
Plus, we will be helping people. 🙂
Let’s all spread the super important LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS message to the world!
Have a great weekend everybody!
It’s moving weekend for us, so wish us luck!!!
p.s.
For those of you who are new around these parts, I thought you might enjoy hearing about the drama that this post created the first time I put it out there.
Read the following (from a previous post), and prepare to be amazed….
You know, now is as good a time as any to discuss a blog comment that I received …a good 2 months after this original post went live.
If you know me personally you know that I try to avoid controversy and that I’m a pleaser by nature, but this was too good not to share.
I do need to preface this next picture by saying if you are easily offended by foul language, you might want to scroll down just a bit (even though the curse words are covered). To say this woman PASSIONATELY disagrees with me and my stance on leggings would be an understatement.
My friend Andrea blurred out all of the curse words….and yes, there were lots of them.
Told you she was passionate.
Here’s what my anonymous (surprise, surprise) commenter had to say about my original Leggings are Not Pants Post.
I think it’s a nice touch that Andrea used my horrendous face to block out the nasty words,
don’t you? And at the very last minute last night…I put hearts over the code word that Andrea had used to disguise the real word that the commenter had left about what she wanted to throw in my face. I didn’t want to run the risk of anybody being offended (even by the code word).
I MEAN.
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?
I have to say, this level of passion was a bit unexpected. 🙂
And I have one question, is it weird that thing I WAS MOST OFFENDED by the fact that she called me old?
That was just mean.
🙂
I would like to tell the anonymous commenter that I’m going to go ahead and stand by my original position that leggings are in fact NOT pants.
I guess we’re just going to have to AGREE TO DISAGREE.
And for the record, Ryan is still on my side. He is loyal to a fault.
Only one of the many reasons I love him so.

AND LAST THING GIRLS…..
IF YOU HAVE THE LEGGINGS, PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT SAYING WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THEM!!!!
*******************************************************************************
Oooh, Wait!
This particular post is getting so much traffic from Pinterest, that I decided to go ahead and add the TUNICS post to the bottom so it could be a 1 Stop Shop!
#we’reallcrazyreally
#ilikeit
#crazylovescompany
After my repeat Leggings Are Not Pants post a couple of weeks ago (found HERE), I received many e-mails saying some variation of the following:
*Your first Leggings Are Not Pants post is how I found your blog in the first place!
*Now that I have these leggings, I’m not sure how I lived XX years without them in my life!
*I also received plenty of WHAT THE HECK DO I WEAR WITH MY
LEGGINGS NOW THAT I HAVE THEM? e-mails.
Well, never fear.
I’ve got this ladies.
helpful, but only one of the tunics I highlighted then is still
available now… so I wanted to update the post this year with new and
current tunics!
Tunics that you can find in stores today!
Tunics that are cute AND cover all of your lady bits.
😉
Yes, my friend Andrea is responsible for the above awesomeness.
Don’t you wish your friend was as funny and creative as mine? 😉
I mean, “adorable hiney”. Hilarious.
Let’s start out the post by reminding you of my favorite leggings.
(Just in case you just found the blog within the last couple of weeks.)
Click HERE for the PTMT MUST HAVE leggings.
AND THEY ARE 25% OFF RIGHT NOW MAKING THEM
ONLY $27!!!!!
For size reference, I have a SMALL in these leggings but only wear them
with tall boots (b/c they are way too long for me to wear with flats).
I have the black and the grey, and I know many of you have the espresso also!
I’ve had them for a year now, and they still look AWESOME.
They don’t sag, they wash perfectly, and they suck you in without making it difficult to breathe.
Those are all WINS in my book.
I ordered LOTS of tunics so I could sift through them at home, style
them with different boots and jewelry, and find the most perfect ones.
I do have 1 problem though.
I ended up ordering 10 tunics.
And my plan was to keep 1…possibly 2 of them.
I hated 4 of them (that you won’t even see on today’s post), so that was actually good.
I’ve returned 6 already (4 that I hated, and 2 that I returned because I
just didn’t love them) because I had to get them off the ol’ charge
card.
But there are 4 still hanging in my closet.
4 that I LOVE and ADORE.
4 that I feel like I need.
I’ve decided I’m going to allow myself to keep 3 of them….because they
aren’t just for leggings, they will look awesome with jeans too….and I
know I will get my $ worth out of them.
Decisions.

SO SIT BACK, RELAX, AND GET READY FOR THE TUNIC PARADE!!!!
that make shirts shorter on me than on girl’s without big boobs and a
massive rib cage. So keep that in mind when trying to decide on the right size for yourself!
Click HERE for this denim tunic that also comes in 3 other solid colors.
For size reference, I was wearing a medium to make it long enough for leggings.

cognac wedge boots sold out, but similar NEW for only $99.95 HERE
finding a denim top long enough to pair with leggings. This one does
the trick, plus it has a cute pattern on it! If you are really long
waisted, you could always pair a long tank underneath it for extra
coverage.

It was also pretty body conscious. I liked it a lot, but I didn’t keep
it because I felt like I would always have to be sucking in when
wearing it.
If you don’t have to worry about sucking in (you go!), then you might really like this one!
Also from Bobeau, THIS hooded long cardigan. It’s plenty long in the front and back to pair with leggings!
(I found out about this when Jessica, a reader, e-mailed me to say it was her less expensive version of the blardigan!)
*************************************************
Click HERE for this Splendid jersey v-neck tunic.
For size reference, I was wearing a medium in this picture.
I ordered a medium because I wanted to make sure it was going to be super flowy, which it was.
I’d be interested to see if the small would have fit better…but I still loved the way the medium looked!
tunic HERE, leggings HERE, black camisole HERE (also love the Shimera tank HERE)
earrings c/o Accessory Concierge HERE,
fatima necklace c/o Gorjana Griffin HERE
Frye boots HERE
It is very different than anything else in my closet, and I think that’s why I loved it so much!
I felt super stylish in it AND like I was wearing pajamas.
This one is staying with me fo’ sho’.
**************************************************
Click HERE for the belted french terry jacket.
For size reference, I was wearing a small.
There are 24/41 5 star reviews and 9 4 star reviews, so I guess the reviews are a little mixed.
BUT I LOVED THIS!
I’m wearing the “neutral streaky” colorway.
I showed Shay this picture and she said it was, and I quote, “VERY Olivia Pope.”
I’ll take it.
tunic HERE, leggings HERE, black camisole HERE (also love the Shimera tank HERE)

I just thought it was a really great look.
So…who wants to be all Olivia Pope with me?
***********************************************
Click HERE for the cowl neck Free People tunic.
For size reference, I was wearing the x-small/small.
tunic HERE, leggings HERE, earrings c/o Accessory Concierge HERE,
Frye boots HERE
If you are long-waisted, you might have to wear a cami or tank under this for maximum coverage.
It was plenty long on me, but remember I’m only 5’4″.
If you’re too tall to wear this with leggings, consider getting it to wear with jeans.
****************************************
for this Mimi Chica tunic dress. For size reference, I was wearing a
small, but if it wasn’t for my boobs, I think I could have taken the
x-small.
tunic HERE, leggings HERE,
earrings c/o Gorjana Giffin at Nordstrom HERE, fatima necklace c/o Gorgana Griffin HERE
magenta necklace c/o Kendra Scott HERE
cognac wedge boots sold out, but similar NEW for only $99.95 HERE
to venture out in public in your leggings. You could wear this dress
with them and ease yourself into the leggings world! 🙂
*************************************************
You know I couldn’t do a tunics post without talking about the much beloved blardigan.
Click HERE. For size reference, I have a small/medium.
Remember that the blardigan is fitted in the arms, which makes it okay to wear it out of the house!
blardigan HERE, leggings HERE, black camisole HERE (also love the Shimera tank HERE)

Do you have any trips planned soon?
If so, you are looking at the most comfortable travel outfit you could ever imagine.
Click HERE for this striped tunic from Caslon. For size reference, I was wearing a small.
tunic HERE, leggings HERE, earrings c/o Gorgnana Giffin at Nordstrom HERE,
white necklace sold out, but similar c/o Kendra Scott HERE
cognac wedge boots sold out, but similar NEW for only $99.95 HERE
This tunic is quite fitted, so if you’re scared to wear it with leggings, you might prefer to wear it with jeans.
Okay…so those are all of the new tunics!
Now a review of a couple of the tunics I’ve talked about before (that are still available).
1)
ultra wide waistband MUST HAVE leggings HERE, Frye boots HERE,
Kimberly necklace HERE, abalone earring c/o Kendra Scott HERE
For size reference, I’m wearing a small in the tunic.
Also, the reviews talk about how the lace on the sleeves is tight, and I would agree.
I happen to like the sleeves tight, because I feel like it helps it not look sloppy.
However, if you have a large forearm, you might not like these sleeves. Just fyi.
***
and it looks awesome with the leggings.
I feel like I need a drum roll or something.
Or some guy in his own pair of leggings with a trumpet drawing attention to the unveiling of this fabulous find.
But since I’ve got neither….here it is.
If you don’t mind, just imagine some trumpet fanfare.
Click HERE for the colors that remain.
Lots of solids and stripes still available!
The wedge boots in the above pictures are sold out, but you can find similar ones HERE.
SO…
HOW DID YOU LIKE THE TUNIC PARADE?
WHICH ONE(S) ARE YOUR FAVORITES?
SOUND OFF IN THE COMMENTS!!!!!
But before you go, I’ve got some SALE items to highlight.
Click HERE for my AG jeans. My first pair of designer jeans are NOW ON SALE!!!
For size reference, I’m wearing a size 27, so I would say they are true to size.
Click HERE for the booties (order 1/2 a size up!)
The jeans are 33% OFF and fully stocked!
The picture looks like they are cropped but on my 5’4″ frame that is not
the case. To wear flats and booties I will definitely be cuffing them.
Here they are with booties…(fyi: I hold my shirt up like that so you can see where the waist falls).
I.LOVE.THESE.JEANS.
TOTALLY worth the money in my opinion.
(Please disregard the scary and oddly shaped claw in the pic on the left. WHOSE HAND IS THAT?)
So you can see above they look cute cuffed with booties (find the booties HERE).
Here the same jeans with tall boots and tunics.
Anthropologie lace tunic HERE .
Caslon belted tunic HERE.
Similar cognac wedge boots HERE.
AG jeans ON SALE HERE.
Happy Friday Girls!
Let’s go out this weekend and ROCK OUR LEGGINGS and COVER OUR CROTCHES!
Amen.

I have the must have leggings in all 3 colors and I adore them! I also have some Zella capris for running in and they are also amazing so I can agree that those leggings are probably awesome too! Great post!! I loved it the 2nd time just as much as the first 🙂
Melissa Woycheese says
I bought the black and the grey ones during the summer sale and I LOVE them! I've already worn them to work several times under my shorter dresses. I'll be buying some for my mom for Christmas!
Michael says
I agreed with you then and I agree with you now!! I don't care if they ARE patterned, they're not pants. Also, that old comment is hilarious. I love how people get internet tough.
Dani {Adventures of a Pharm Girl} says
I love this post even better than the first one (which I have used as justification in several occasions by the way). Leggings and layers are just perfect for fall and I love all of the looks you've created! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Anonymous says
I have the black and the grey, and I love them just as much as you do. I even bought them for my mom and sisters last year for Christmas and now they love them too. Much love! Jessica
Sarah says
I love your blog and totally agree that leggings are NOT pants! I would love it if you would do a post for us tall girls who have a real challenge making sure to cover everything. I love seeing you in all of those super cute outfits, but sometimes when you are taller, I am 5'10", leggings are hard to figure out. Do you have a tall friend you could style? I know sometimes some brands run shorter or longer. If anyone can help me I know you can!
Kristin says
Hi Sara! I am 5'9" (with a 33 inseam) and the Hue leggings fit me perfectly. I could wear flats if I choose but I stick to boots. Also, I can pull of most of her looks with the addition of a Target Long & Lean tank or Gap Essential Ribbed Tank (in a tall size) to keep my crotchtal region covered 😉 Lastly, Loft has been selling a lot of their tunic blouses in Tall Sizes this season which has worked wonderfully for me. Hope this Helps 🙂
beaner says
I have 3 pairs of them and I am also 5'10. They fit perfect. I bought them in both small and medium and they are still long. I get confused sometimes when ordering but I must say the medium fit is a little nicer for my midsection than the small!!! Buy them!!!! you will not be disappointed. I also bought the above tunic from Nordstrom with the pockets and it definitely covers the crotchal area!!!
Amy McCown says
Thanks for the suggestion Kristin. I am 5'9" as well, but have a very long torso, so pretty much every tunic or long shirt I try on pretty much makes leggings look like pants. Haha. I will have to look at the tall tunics at the LOFT. I usually end up buying dresses to fit like a normal tunic would. The HUE leggings are great though I have two pairs and love both of them.
Sara says
I'm 6 feet tall and have a long torso. Will definitely check out the Loft tunics in tall. Thanks, Kristin! I like my Hue leggings that I bought last year (they are even too long for me!), but it was hard to find tops long enough to keep the ol' crotchal region covered.
P.S. I bought the Old Navy Pixie pants in tall and they are perfect. So cute, too! Got the ON boyfriend jeans in tall – too big and too long in the crotchal area. Getting things to fit right is definitely not a smooth process. 🙂 So glad to have all your rec's Sheaffer! At least I know what it is I'm looking for when I shop now!
P.P.S. Bit the bullet and ordered the Anthropologie sweatshirt with lace trim tunic which is on back order tip NOVEMBER! Fingers crossed that it will be long enough when it finally arrives! But scored free shipping since I ordered it from the store. Wo-hoo!
Anonymous says
I was scrolling down to comment and was going to ask if she had a tall friend to style because of the covering issue and saw your comment! Definitely going to check out the previously mentioned tall lengths! Thanks ladies and thanks ptmt!
emma @ {from my little pink couch} says
I am cracking up!!!! & no …. leggings are not pants!
Kellyann Rohr says
Yes, yes, yes – cover your crotchal area and leggings are not pants – EVER!!!!!!!! Amen Sheaffer!
Susan Jeffries says
I want to sing "Leggings are not pants" to the tune of "Fish are not food" from the Nemo movie!! My 13 year old daughter and I just had this conversation this week! She has this amazing young dancer body and we have difficulty finding things long enough for her legs. I am sharing this post with her after school tonight because she thinks you are cool(: I am not, thank you(: But if she hears it from you, it will work! Thanks friend! And have you ever tried Women With Control Leggings? LOVE!! Susan
kimm atwood says
Ok halfway through I started laughing. Girl I agree with you cover the areas that need to be covered. Nothing worse than seeing someone with leggings on, that are some what sheer and seeing things we don't need to see! That being said in fall and winter I love me some leggings, my favorite go to outfit is leggings and aome big comfy top, some boots and a scarf and voila I'm looking pulled together yet super comfy
Narci says
One of my very favorite posts!! Love it, friend! Also, I am totally going to grab those Hue leggings!
Amy says
Ugh, if I had a dollar for every time I saw a tween walking around in leggings and a crop tip, I'd be rich! Leggings are most certainly, not pants! I did buy the favorite leggings and Zella capris during the Anniversary sale this year (thanks for the tips!), and I love them both. Just need some more tops—and thanks for the layering ideas!
Anonymous says
I have both the Zella and the Hue, and although I love them both, I do wear the Hue quite a bit more. I think you're right about the waistband. It sucks me in without making me feel like I'm being tortured. Ha!
Michelle says
Love this and love your blog (longtime reader here)!! Off to buy more "Must Have" leggings now…clicking over! Thanks for helping me spend money and look great at the same time! As always…leggings are not pants! I am the same age as you and we are DEFINITELY NOT old!! 🙂
Natalie Zambreski says
I hit that Old Navy sale SO HARD on Tuesday, got soem great essentials, and totally agree, Pixie Pants are life changing!
Kim Kauffman says
That comment with your face blurring the words out is still just as funny now as it was then ? I only have the black must haves so am definitely going to be adding the gray this fall!
Kathryn says
You are a genius, SS! Is it bad that I bought 3 pairs of black Hue leggings for myself and 1 for my mom??
Amanda says
I'm kicking myself for not buying these during the anniversary sale but am getting them today! Every time I buy late I think I know your voice (not in a creepy way) saying "I told you so". I can't even believe that someone is that passionate about showing their hiney. Some people these days! Thanks for the best Friday morning laugh ever! I've pinned the Legging are NOT pants image and hope that it makes this post hit over 100,000 too!
Jenna says
I LOVE wearing the must have leggings! I have the black and charcoal and LOVE!! Where are your denim ones from? The only ones I've found are Mossimo at Target and I feel like they are a bit see through. You should also try the brand Yummie by Heather. (this might be the underwear that Shay loves?) I bought a pair of the anniversary sale thinking they would be the perfect navy/denim color to wear with a tunic I have. Unfortunately they were a little too purple. If I didnt already own the HUE in black and charcoal, I would have bought them in the Yummie. These leggings are INCREDIBLE. If you want help with the muffin top – this is your legging! These are incredible. And then length was also awesome for me. I'm 5'3. http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/yummie-by-heather-thomson-nora-control-top-skimmer-leggings-online-only/3694687?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=2375500&fashionColor=BLACK&resultback=200&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-searchresults-_-1_2_B

Did you see Ryan's a daddy now? So sweet! And…how gorgeous is that little girl gonna be?
Also-really with that comment??? If you're old, than I am ancient! You are adorable!!! Jealousy is so sad. 🙁

I already had the must have leggings from last year but at the anniversary sale bought backup pairs just in case something happened to my original ones. Only had black and gray but added a brown pair yesterday because of triple points. They are on the way now! This is definitely a great post!

I got the grey and black must have leggings last year, and they are awesome. Can't wait until it is cool enough to wear them again!
This Gingers Journey says
Love this post and couldn't agree more!!! In my opinion you need zippers or buttons to be pants and leggings do not have those soooo therefore leggings are NOT pants. 🙂 I have the Hue ones (per your suggestion of course) and they are my fav! 2 blacks and a grey…. maybe i need the brown too 🙂
CLee says
You are a beautiful lady! Legging are indeed not pants! I love your blog and can't wait to read your post every week. Keep up the great work. I rely on you to keep me updated on all things Nordstrom and for great deals in fashion.
Stacey says
I am laughing my head off!! Anonymous must like to wear her leggings with a shirt…I'm pretty sure I've seen her out and about shaking her booty proudly for all to see. I just read this post to my husband and his comment is that nobody should show their crotchal area in leggings no matter how they are built! I love that you can laugh a little about rude girl. Keep it up girl! Can't wait to see which tops to wear with my leggings. 🙂

I bought the black leggings last year at your suggestion. I was a little unsure about how they would work for me, a 54 year old! But, I loved them…and always wore them with a long top and lots of layers, just like I was instructed! I bought a grey pair this year during the anniversary sale (and the Grey and Blue striped Caslon tunic to go with!!)…they are truly comfy and hold up well….just like you said. When you speak, people need to listen!
And…I can't believe how nasty that commenter that didn't agree with you was. I mean, really? Get a life, if you didn't agree, then move on!!!
Love reading your blog!!!

ok, my thoughts…
I didn't own a pair, i'm 5ft 4, size 1011, and thought I had no business wearing leggings, though I love the look with a tunic, and boots, so one day, my senses went to the wind and I ordered a pair.. and I freaking love them!!..ok, I do have to admit, I've not.actually worn them yet, only because I didn't have boots.. but ordered them too.. dang backordered, but soon I well be strutting my stuff!

So funny.:) and I totally agree. Leggings still aren't pants. This post was how I found your blog in the first place. And I own two pairs for those wide band Hue leggings because of you. Thanks!

Had to weigh in on the leggings!! I'm a Mom to two teenage girls (14 and 17) and of course as all teenage girls they LOVE leggings! Strict rule at our house though is that your tush and crotch must always be covered. I bought a pair of the HUE leggings in charcoal for one daughter after reading your review and she likes them very much! But, they are both very partial to the Zella live in legging and wear them constantly. They are never see through, hold their shape and are so very comfortable. Though slightly pricier than the HUE leggings, we have found them to be worth the price!
LOVE reading your blog and have bought many items for myself and my daughters based on your reviews! As for your nasty email, in the words of Taylor Swift, SHAKE IT OFF!!

Preach it, Sheaffer!!! Love this post and I just love saying it, "Leggings are not Pants"…EVER!!!! I can't wait to see all the tunics paired with leggings you've ordered!
Have a great weekend!

Oh gosh, I remember that comment. Well, I agreed with you then (that post was how I found your blog!) and I agree with you now. Plus Ryan agrees with us, so who cares what an ugly-spirited ANONYMOUS commenter says. I'll still be rocking my Hue leggings (all 3 colors) this year with my hiney and my crotchal area appropriately covered!
Rach says
I never saw that comment before! I am literally cracking up! "And for the record, Ryan is still on my side. He is loyal to a fault." You go girl!
Aimee says
I loved your LANP post when it first came out and it's great you recapped for the upcoming fall season! I LOVE my Hue leggings and look forward to wearing my "long" layers. 🙂

Shaeffer – Love your writing ALWAYS. And thank you for the humanitarian work you are doing 😉 And I love when nasty commenters have atrocious spelling. I know I shouldn't but….Danielle

I'm the one with the twins at the birthday party in the original post, and I just had to share my new favorite feature of the blardigan: it helps my twins take a nap! 🙂 They share a room and won't sleep at naptime unless I rock them (they just play the whole time otherwise), and I have discovered that when I wear the blardigan and cover them up with it as I rock them, they fall asleep MUCH faster!
Elaine says
I think my favorite part of this post is the very last graphic! Yes, leggings are NOT pants! Cover your crotch! And, I think w/ that graphic, I fell in love with your blog even more!
Marty says
You are so funny! I had totally forgotten about the MLM (mean lady messages), but re-reading them just now…still funny.
And I think your "ahir" always looks pretty in the pictures you post! 😉
Katie Smith says
You are awesome, and I have the Hue leggings and love..love..love them. They are for sure great for holding in and not making anything bulge out somewhere else, lol.:)

I wish I had seen your post back when I was in high school. (okay, not possible since it was the 80s and no internet yet) There is a giant picture of my backside in my senior yearbook where I am wearing leggings with a normal shirt. Oh the shame. And as for the lovely anonymous lady, I had no idea leggings sparked such passion in people. Who knew?!
Emily Henderson says
Still giggling at Ryan's distraught picture "Stick and Stones" bahaha, anyway, I would like to know why the anonymous poster even wasted her precious times reading through the entire blog if she was so offended:) Maybe she had a Bloody Mary brunch, maybe she had a little more Mary then Bloody and it just got to her…I don't know but there is absolutely no excuse for foul language, especially towards you AND Ryan:)
Kent Harms says
I agree, I love your "ahir" !! Girl, you are HIGH-larious, and YOUNG! Super duper young!!!! Love your blog, love your smile. You just keep being you.

I have the leggings in black…..pretty sure I need them in the other colors as well!! I can not wait for it to get cool in Texas so I can wear them!!!!

THANK YOU! I loved this post when it was originally published, and I keep threatening to print it out and hang it at work (I work at a night club in Las Vegas). I love, love, love leggings… that said 80% of the time it was WAY to warm to layer, or even wear a sweater. So i've compromised, still sticking to "Shaeffers Standards" and wear oversized t-shirts, ballet flats, and tons of accessories as my layers. Yes, it looks casual, but this is Vegas baby, and casual is where it's at. Thank you again for your wonderfully hilarious fashion advise!! (btw, I bought the nude Vince Camuto flats and LOVE them!!)
Jody says
I love you Sheaffer! I agree 100% that leggings are not pants!!
Julie says
I was hesitant to get them because I am 45 y.o, but I did order them during the anniv. sale and I wore them with a long sweatshirt so my crotchal area was covered. I haven't ventured outdoors in them yet, I'm working up to it. hahaha

This post had me in tears with laughter the original time (and made me a committed reader of your blog). Just as hilarious the 2nd time, and with new links!
Lana says
I missed this the first time (how is that possible….I must be the only one)! You are so adorable, and I couldn't agree more – that leggings aren't pants! (Also, pajamas aren't clothes, but tell that to some of the people in my town and you are just asking for trouble). I CANNOT believe someone took the time to write such a nasty email. Sigh. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!
AbderianLaughter says
laughing my (covered) butt off over here…as a more recent reader over here I missed this post the first time around but I'm so so glad it's been reposted….clearly a pressing issue, with the defensive poster as proof that there are still many lost & confused souls out there 😛
Thanks so much for linking to the Hue leggings…I have only about 7 pairs of leggings ranging from completely see-though to ehhhh-okay quality that I've amassed in my search for the perfect one…I'll definitely be trying these out

I love this post! Hilarious!!! I love leggings…I have gray, black and burnt orange for fun! I had a cream pair, but that was just ridiculous! It was impossible to wear them without feeling weird.
Andrea at Opulent Cottage says
LMAO here, what a great post! So glad that my gal pal Stacey K turned me on to your awesome blog. I'm with you, leggings are NOT PANTS! I preach this to the college girls all the time. Some great looks up there, thanks for the inspiration and the laughs this morning!!
Brooke Opgenorth says
I wear them to work all the time 🙂 I'd like to think they helped me get my promotion… Ha. But seriously.
Sarah says
I got the black ones last year and just bought the grey ones this past Anniversary Sale…need to go get them hemmed though – short girl problems! But the do cover your tummy and makes you feel sucked in without suffocated…and I agree, leggings are not pants!

Dying over the second pic of Ryan! Hilarious! Thanks for sharing!

Ughhh I have the dark ombre blardigan and now I want the lighter one that you featured! Lucky for me, my mom loves when I give her Christmas gift suggestions early. 🙂

Ummmm,, wow! My girlfriend and I just has this conversation last night on the drive home about this exact topic!!! I CANNOT believe how any NORMAL woman wouldn't agree with this post!!! NOBODY wants to see another woman's taco….seriously, well I guess I should say I don't want to see it.
I have 3 pairs of those leggings and LOVE them! Listen ladies, if you don't have them, get them, you will not be disappointed! But please cover your taco shell!!! Lol. 🙂
Sara F. says
I am DYING over the taco!!!! Hilarious!!!!

I feel like "cover your crotch" is an axiom that would get one really far in life, even in non-leggings related situations. 😉 great post!

Hi Sheaffer! I've been reading your blog for about a year now, but never comment (unless you count commenting in my head…) because I'm always feeding myself or the baby breakfast while reading it. BUT I was smiling at and loving your post this morning, when part of it sounded familiar. That new legging review was from ME! Squee! I feel famous! I totally agree with all of your advice, I just have a tiny addendum to add: Leggings are NOT pants… unless you are inside your house with your husband. Listen, I've always had a flat butt, and what little was there slid down the back of my thighs after having 3 kids. However, my husband caught sight of my rear view in these leggings, and really liked it. Complimented me on it! Let his eyes linger on it! So we should all keep our crotchal areas covered in these leggings, but if your top flips up to give your hubby a little peek at your booty– eh, not the worst thing 😉 Love your blog, Hon! You are making me a stylish mama, and my daughters call me "fancy" now, all thanks to you! ~Selena in Wisconsin
The Rohman Family says
Ack! So cool that was your comment! And I love your honesty about your butt sliding down your thighs after 3 kids. My butt's still there, but my boobs are somewhere on my back after nursing my 3 kids 🙁

I just wanted to chime in to say that I feel an odd kinship with you – I've been using the word "crotchal" for years now and feel that it meets all requirements for being a word. Start a petition and I'll sign it – leggings are NOT pants! 🙂
Amy S. says
I lived in my Zella leggings last year but I bought the Hue leggings you suggested for this year! Just need some cooler weather. I also work out regularly and wear compression capris from Old Navy. My workout tops don't cover the regions discussed but with leggings, my parts are always covered. Oh, if you could be a fly on the wall when I try to explain this logic to my boyfriend…
Erin Stinson says
This was truly one of the funniest posts I have ever read. I have two pair of the hue leggings and they are everything Sheaffer says they are and more! I'm so excited for fall so that I can start wearing them again. the wide waistband really does hold everything in without being too constrictive and they are good quality, don't pick and don't sag. Thank you for reminding us that leggings aren't pants!
Becke says
Your original legging post is how I found your blog. So glad I did or I never would have found the blardigan to wear on our cold U.P. nights. ☺ Love your blog!
Kelli Badder says
I LOVE my HUE leggings. I have them in black and in grey. Best leggings ever because the don't sag in the knee or the crotch area….which should be covered at all times when wearing leggings! 🙂 Thanks for always helping me spend money and looking cute while doing it. Keep up the great work with this blog! PS: you and I are the same age and we are not OLD! Sheesh…some people!
Aimee says
Thanks for the laugh today! I totally agree…LADIES cover it up! 🙂
Mely H says
I would like to respond to that ugly comment by saying that it doesn't matter what age anybody is, Leggings are not meant to be used as pants! I am not "old af" (24yo) and I still don't wear leggings as pants and I LOVE leggings! It amazes me how quick people are to be mean and bully others all in the safety and anonymity of a computer screen! Girl keep doing what you do!
Tiffany {A Touch of Grace} says
I have been praying to the weather gods to bring the cooler weather so I can break out my Hue leggings. I love them SO MUCH! I would wear them every day except I feel that people may start to think I own no other pants. They are glorious. Hue leggings and my blardigan is my most favorite cool weather outfit.
Laura Gill says
I love this post! I finally ordered the must have leggings during the anniversary sale. My only regret is that I didn't buy more pairs. They are the perfect pair of leggings…I love, love, LOVE them (and this blog)!!!

OMG – It's STILL Just as funny as it was the first time 🙂 I think this needs to be an annual post. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! I kind of hope anonymous comes back out of the woodwork all fired up again just so we can see what she has to say! She's had an entire year to think about it… fingers crossed!!! Love you, conservative hag! 🙂

How appropriate of a post for Flashback Friday! Wonder what other gems Ryan might have for us now that he's a dad? Thanks for the great laugh (again) to kick off the weekend!

This post ROCKS!!! I live in DC (where people rarely care about what you wear- mostly care about where you went to school and where you vacation), and although I loved my leggings as a child of the 80's, I didn't think my bunns would ever slide back into a pair as an adult. Thanks to your advice, I bought the leggings you recommended and they are AWESOME. So comfy for chasing my three banchees (a.k.a. children) and dodging the maniac politicians of DC :). I truly love your humor and outlook on life- this blog is just too much fun.

So very glad you can laugh at the comment!

You crack me up! Also, I have to tell you that I found a pair of leggings that might give the Hue pair a run for the money. JCrew! And I believe they are the same price. You should check them out and let me (us) know what you think!

I am still laughing about that person's comment! Also I copied and quoted "LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS PEOPLE.
COVER YOUR CROTCH.
Needlepoint that on a pillow.
Please feel free to take notes if you need to."
on my Facebook as soon as I read it! LOL!!
Also, I promptly went to Nordstrom.com and purchased the leggings in grey and the black Caslon Knit tunic!

Do you or does anyone have the Hue moto denim leggings that are on sale??? If so please let us know what you think of them!

I mean, WHY WAS I NOT FOLLOWING YOU BACK THEN?!? I would have DIED to see this the first time around. This is hysterical. I know these people do this for attention, and WOW! did she get it! I just dread that people are gonna have to see her crotch this winter. Cover it up. Double-bag it. Whatever. Nobody wants to see it.

First of all, I think I laughed out loud when I read this during a seminar (oops! – don't tell anyone I wasn't paying any attention to the speaker). Now I have a favor to ask. Pretty please. Could you make up fliers that I could pass out at the mall in the town where my daughter goes to college? Seriously, those girls need a PTMT smack down. Let's work together to cover up crotchal areas all across the land! –Jayne
