It’s My BIRTHDAY WEEK!!! Favorite #5

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WEEK TO ME!!!!!!!
Well, not me….but the blog!
The blog turns 1 year old on Wednesday, and it seems like just yesterday that I was sitting with Shay, Lisa, and Erika at the pool tossing around the idea of me starting this blog.
And here we are.
1 year later, 280 some odd posts later, and who knows how many selfies later. 😉

This year has been so much more fun than I ever could have imagined,
and I have all of you ladies to thank!
You have been SO supportive, and I seriously can’t thank you enough for reading, coming back on a regular basis, commenting, and telling your friends and family about the blog.
It’s because of YOU that this blog has become what it is today.

So……
to celebrate YOU…..

WHAT?
I know!
Now THAT is what I’m talking about!
Yep….I flipped when I found out that Nordstrom graciously offered to provide a

It’s the blog’s birthday, but one of you is going to get the gift!

I’m going to be highlighting my 5 FAVORITES over the last 12 months.

 So, without further ado, let’s get the birthday week countdown started!

FAVORITE #5: The MILITARY JACKET

I have a military jacket that I bought from The LOFT many many years ago, but I rarely wore it.
I just never gravitated towards it for some reason.  Enter Pinterest and all of her military jacket inspiration.  Pinterest convinced me a great military jacket looks good with everything!
EVERYTHING!
Including leather shorts and white laces dresses apparently (see Pinterest collage below).

Figures.

 As you can see, military jackets are all over Pinterest (and blog land), and as I continued to see them, I started to see my need for one!


Well played social media, well played.

So, I started to wear mine.  I started to wear mine a lot!

It seemed as if whenever I had an “eh” (shrug and tilt) outfit,
I could throw on one of my military jackets and elevate the look immediately.
The jacket made me feel stylish and put together, even when I was just wearing jeans and a t-shirt!
  If you don’t have one yet, don’t worry!  Lots of current options are listed at the bottom of this post!
Here is a simple outfit with my first military jacket.
Everybody has jeans, a scarf, and a t-shirt.  Just add a military jacket!
The jacket just makes the outfit SO MUCH cuter, right?

And here are a handful of other looks that I created with the jacket in just the last 8 months.
Here it is with leggings, a crisp white shirt, and a brass ball  necklace.
Without the jacket, the outfit was just “eh”.  With the military jacket, it looked totally put together.

On the left I have it paired with a plaid shirt, skinny jeans, and tall boots
On the right I have it paired with a striped shirt and trouser jeans.
Again, the jacket just kicks up the cute factor of both outfits!

This is probably my favorite military jacket look of all that I copied straight off of Pinterest:
Coral striped t-shirt, skinny jeans, tall boots, and a grey scarf.
Without the military jacket, the look is okay… 
WITH the military jacket, my cool points just totally went up!

In fact, I was wearing my first one so often, that I  ended up getting myself a 2nd one so I could mix it up! 
It’s different than my first one (a little darker color, longer, and
more simple), therefore I was totally able to justify the purchase to myself, and I wore the heck out of this one too!   😉

 Here are a couple of looks I created with my 2nd military jacket (from Nordstrom, but sold out).

I was sad to see they were sold out of mine (boo!), but I found some FANTASTIC options
at every price point.
Can I get a 3rd military jacket?
Would you guys judge me?

Sadly, most of them have not yet arrived at the stores, so I was only able to try 2 of them on.
Here are the two I tried on:

This one is a great basic.  Very simple, but super cute.  It was great quality, and I think it is a classic look that would last you for many years to come. 
Keep in mind, this one does not zip up (it only buttons).  However, I don’t think that really matters because I never close my other jackets.  If you think you will close yours,
 it would probably be better to go with a zipper.

This x-small was too small for me (only size available in the store to try on), but I still wanted to try it on to get an idea of the fit.  It’s a great look and it has FANTASTIC reviews online.
It’s a bit more trendy and has a younger look to it, so keep that in mind.  It’s also in the Juniors section, so I would suggest sizing up (at least 1 size).  It was VERY cute, and it comes in 3 colors!

I wish I would have been able to try these other jackets on, but I called 3 different Nordstrom stores in my general area, and they hadn’t been stocked yet in any of the stores (and they actually didn’t know if they would be receiving some of them at all).

I really REALLY like THIS one!
It’s a fantastic price, and it’s simple.
It’s good to go for “simple” if you are wanting it to be a good standard and basic piece in your closet.  It has zipper and snap closure, and it’s a perfect length to wear with skinny jeans or leggings (because it would cover up part of your bum), but it’s not boxy so it would also look good with boot cut or trouser jeans.
The gathered waist is a nice touch which makes it super feminine.

This is a PERFECT basic for your closet that would became a “GO TO” item for you.



 THIS one from LOFT also looks great.
It doesn’t come in the standard green, but this one does come in “sand” and “grey”.
SO CUTE!
OH WAIT!  I found it in green too HERE.

These are the others I found online that I am totally digging.  You can click on the picture to take you to the jacket (or you can read more about them under the collage).  I’m also trying out a new feature and you can pin or tweet it. 1)  This option HERE is definitely more “trendy” than “classic”, but it’s a great look and it’s 33% off right now!
2)  HERE is a plus size option that I ADORE.  Another great plus size option HERE.
3)  And oh my goodness!  Love THIS one.  It’s grey, but it is FABULOUS!  REALLY REALLY FABULOUS! The peplum
and the double breasted look reminds me so much of my first
jacket pictured up top.  This is a great and relatively inexpensive option.
4)  There is THIS one that is the same maker of mine (Caslon).  It is only available in an x-large, but if that’s your size, you could get a great deal on this jacket because it’s on sale!
5)  THIS one looks very similar to mine from Nordstrom.  It has zipper closure, and I like the zipper detailing on the pockets.   It’s great quality and is definitely a classic look.  It also comes in navy.  It’s a perfect basic and worth the money in my opinion.
6)  I am dying…DYING over THIS one!!!!!  Look at the super cute sleeve detail, and the ruffles on the back make we want to scream!  It’s not cheap, but I think it could totally be worth the price tag.  The frayed edges and seams make it super cool.
*   Here are several that aren’t featured in the collage and are more “trendy”.  I found THIS one in the Juniors section. 
It’s black (instead of green), but I really love it.  And it’s under $50!  Check out THIS one with faux leather sleeves! And there is also a sleeveless version HERE.  I’m thinking stripes would be fab under it.

As a general rule I don’t spend over $100 on a single clothing item (unless it’s boots or a nice bag), but I am totally willing to spend over $100 on an item like a military jacket or a blazer that will be worn all the time, with lots of different looks, and will become a staple in my closet.
I’m willing to pay more because I know I’m going to get my $ out of it.
Still, several of the above options are under $100…..so just find your favorite!

And listen.
I’m
not normally a person who likes to employ peer pressure (who am I kidding, I am TOTALLY
that person)…but I feel this situation calls for it.  A military jacket is 100% worth the investment.
So just in case you need a little push, it’s peer pressure time.
Here goes…
If you want to be cool, you need one of these jackets.

Come on, everybody is doing it.

    First- I am so excited about the birthday giveaway. Nordstrom is a favorite of mine!!!!

    Secondly, I already have a green military style jacket but after seeing all of the great alternatives listed, I am thinking of buying a longer one a little darker than the one I have. Thanks for all of the great tips.

    Lastly, I wanted to mention that I found a GREAT pair of mustard yellow skinny jeans at the Loft Outlet this weekend. I know some of your readers were looking for a pair similar to your and these were a great fit. They were but one, get one 50% off and had many colors. However, if you only wanted the mustard ones (like me) they were full price at $69. Just wanted to pass this along- I scoped some up and even my hubby commented that they were a great fit. 🙂

    Dude, Sheaffer, you have totally inspired me to break out of my "stay at home mom" rut/funk & try to be more cute & stylish, even if all I'm doing in a day is preschool dropoff/pickup and errands. Also, I totally never considered shopping at Nordstrom before, as I always just assumed it was too expensive, the clothes were too fancy/formal, etc… but I'm totally a believer now! Plus, with two small kids at home, the free shipping/returns is the BEST! I ordered the "must have" Pleione shirt from the anniversary sale in like every color, figuring I'd pick like my top two and return the rest. Except, I kind of want to keep them all! Thanks for intervening & keeping me from fully "letting myself gooooooo"! And oh yeah, there is a Nordstrom Rack within 5 minutes of my house. I've never really shopped there, but now I'm sort of afraid to even set foot in the place. I might not be able to control myself!

    Happy, happy birthday! I love parties where I get the treats! – – – Not only great fashion advice, but the chance to buy many of these very cool items with a Nordstrom GC. I actually have a buttery tan military jacket from about 3 years ago (Banana) and can't agree with Schaeffer more….SUCH a useful item in my closet. Actually "ups" the t-shirt and jean uniform and when you add a scarf and/or statement necklace, you feel really pulled together. Although now I need a green one….. Looking forward to tomorrow's post!

    Happy happy blog birthday to one of the best parts of my day!! You introduced me to the greatness that is Nordstrom (I don't have one in my area, but online I go cray). I am out of control with all the greatness that are the bracelets, Toms, and wedges I now stylishly sport! And I don't even usually like wedges!!!! Luckily, I have an obsession with the Bachelor which led to an obsession with Bachelor blogs, which led to me being obsessed with Sean because he was the Bachelor, and then obsessed with Shay because Sean talked about her blog on Twitter and then obsessed with Schaeffer because Shay linked the snot out of your blog on her blog! Which also feeds into my obsession with fashion.
