Happy Thursday, everybody! I’ve got an extra post for you this week, and I’m so excited to share part of my home with you! I get lots of requests for home posts, so I’m going to try to start incorporating some here and there, and today is all about our guest bedroom.
Guest bedrooms are often spaces in our homes that are neglected. They are an afterthought, but they shouldn’t be! Since having a functional guest bedroom allows you to host people you love, I think they are incredibly important. When I’m hosting friends and family, I have two main goals: I want them to feel welcome and comfortable. If they feel welcome and comfortable, they’ll come back! More time with my loved ones is the plan, y’all.
So I’m working with Macy’s and Shopstyle today to bring you a checklist of things you can add to your guest bedroom to make it warm, welcoming, and functional. I recently completed a guest bedroom refresh, and I’m eager to share everything with you.
Before we get started today, you need to know that Macy’s is having a HUGE sitewide sale right now. With the code BIG you can get an additional 20% OFF 1,000s of markdowns now through February 24th! Many of the items in today’s post are included in the sale!
This is our guest bedroom after the Macy’s refresh! I absolutely love it. I think it’s beautiful, warm, cozy, and functional.
We already had all of the furniture pieces we needed and most of the accessories, but I found so many items at Macy’s to get the bedroom set up and ready for guests.
So, what all do you need to do to get your guest bedroom ready to host loved ones? I’ve got an easy checklist for you!
A COMFORTABLE BED
A comfortable bed is probably the most important thing in a guest bedroom. It’s obviously imperative for a good night’s sleep, and a comfortable bed starts with a great foundation.
When we moved into our home 5 years ago, our master bedroom headboard and mattress got moved to the guest bedroom since we were upgrading to a King size bed. #allthepraisehands However, if you are in need of a new mattress, did you know you can get them at Macy’s? They often run mattress sales and they have so many options to choose from.
Check out their mattress page that sorts all your mattress options out by size, support level (from extra firm to extra plush), and type (everything from air mattresses and gel memory foam to adjustable beds)! They even have a mattress buying guide. Other services included 12 month financing plans, white glove delivery and set up, and a Worry No More Mattress 10 year protection plan. And many of their mattresses are 30-60% OFF right now!
In addition to a great mattress, we also have a memory foam mattress topper on our guest bed! Even if you have an old mattress that isn’t the best, you can always top it with a great topper and fake it a bit. It’s a super economical option. Click HERE for a number of different mattress toppers if you aren’t in a place to spring for an entire mattress right now. Many are on sale, and some qualify for the additional 20% OFF with the code BIG. #fakeittillyoumakeit
Soft sheets are also a necessity. I grabbed this cute organic cotton sheet set (60% OFF right now) that fits nicely over our mattress and mattress topper.
And although we already had a headboard, Macy’s has an incredible headboard selection! I especially love their fabric headboards, and you won’t believe the sale prices right now! Just click on any that you are interested in.
BEAUTIFUL BEDDING
I love a bed with lots of fluffy covers and tons of pillows. I like it to look as comfy as it feels when you crawl into it, so I typically pile the pillows and covers up high.
I already had the bed skirt, but the rest of the bed coverings and pillows are new! When I was in Macy’s one day, they had a display bed made up with this GORGEOUS linen and cotton ruffle quilt. I fell in love with the creamy color, quilted design, and pleated ruffles. It comes in a pretty pink as well and is machine washable. And right now it’s ON SALE, and then an additional 20% OFF with the code BIG!
I also saw this fluffy pink and white comforter and sham set that I knew would look dreamy paired with the ruffle quilt. It’s on sale as well, and it qualifies for the 20% OFF!

EXTRA PILLOWS AND BLANKETS
To ensure extreme comfort, extra pillows and blankets around the room are so appreciated by guests.
Ladies. THESE COOLING PILLOWS are an incredible option. They provide “comfort and support for all sleep styles with the Cooling Gel Overlay Memory Foam Bed Pillow from SensorGel. They use new, odor-free, open-cell memory foam technology, featuring a cooling gel overlay on one side as well as the iCOOL Technology System advanced ventilation fabrication process that enhances breathability and is 5 times cooler than the leading competitor’s memory foam.”
And they really do stay cool! I love a cold pillow and usually find myself constantly flipping a pillow from back to front throughout the night to get the perfect coolness against my skin! No flipping necessary with these pillows!
I also have two additional blankets in the room.
This mustard and cream throw at the foot of the bed, also on sale.
And this blush pink throw on the chair.
BEDSIDE TABLES AND LAMPS
My bedside tables are unconventional and a little quirky (a secretary on one side and a low dresser on the other that used to be in Carter’s nursery), but Macy’s has quite the selection of bedside tables to choose from. I absolutely love this rustic two drawer nightstand.
It’s nice to have a place for visitors to throw their keys, to place their jewelry at night, etc.
Bedside lamps are also a nice touch. Most people like to read at night until time to drift off, and bedside lamps make that easy. Click HERE for Macy’s lamp selection.
This little corner of the room is one of my favorite spots in the house. That precious little bubble in the shadow box is what Carter wore when we dedicated him at church when he was 8 months old, and the picture books on the left are books I made that document Carter’s first 5 years. They are filled with pictures and memories of cute little things he used to say. We love to flip through them together.
A FAN
When I’m staying somewhere other than my home, I always hope there is a fan. In fact, I’ve been known to travel with a small fan. Not only does a fan circulate the air, but it also provides some nice background noise. We installed a ceiling fan in our guest bedroom, but we also have an oscillating fan in the closet that we can easily pull out for guests if they so desire.
A CLEAN AND WELL ORGANIZED CLOSET
If I’m being honest, this is something that I need to work on. We have a pretty spacious guest bedroom closet, but it’s full of lots of extras right now. It’s become a storage closet of sorts for us, and I really need to clean it out and organize it to make it a functional space for our guests.
A good guest bedroom closet would have lots of space for a guest to hang their clothes with empty hangers. A luggage rack (on sale!) would be a nice touch, as would a small steamer.
If you wanted to be extra hospitable, you could have an extra robe or two hanging in the closet. These cotton terry bath robes are unisex, and you guessed it, on sale!
TECHNOLOGY ACCESS
I like to leave an extra charging cord and our wifi password on the bedside table.
A FUNCTIONAL BATHROOM SET UP
When preparing a bathroom for your guests, there are lots of things to keep in mind. Clean towels in plain sight are a necessity. Our towels needed a refresh, so I grabbed this set in Natural. It’s an 8-piece set that includes two bath towels, two hand towels, and four wash cloths. The towels are plush and soft, and they have fantastic reviews!
I also loved the color and fringy look of this new bath mat. You can find all available bath mats HERE.
The “shower curtain” is actually window treatments that I re-purposed years ago, but Macy’s has a great selection of shower curtains HERE. And you can find all sorts of bathroom accessories HERE.
Other ideas to think about when getting your bathroom ready for guests: plenty of toilet paper, travel size toiletries for the shower, and an extra toothbrush just in case they forgot theirs!
YUMMY SMELLS
I like for a room to not just look beautiful, but to smell beautiful also. You could of course achieve this with candles, but I prefer essential oils.
I love a citrus scent, and lavender (which promotes restful sleep) and “be centered” oils are perfect for a guest bedroom as well. And diffusers obviously don’t have the risk associated with them that a burning candle does.

FRESH FLOWERS
Fresh flowers are always a lovely touch. They make the room beautiful and will make your guests feel special.
This large hurricane made a perfect vessel for a large arrangement of hydrangeas. I was excited to see this was part of the 20% OFF promotion too!
OTHER THINGS I LIKE TO DO FOR MY GUESTS
I always like to send my guests upstairs with 1 or 2 chilled bottles of water.
An empty trash can in the bathroom is always appreciated.
An alarm clock used to be a necessity, so I have one tucked in the top drawer of the blue dresser. Most everybody uses their phones now, but I have a clock available just in case.
I’m also planning on hanging a full-length mirror on the back of the door because I know that I always appreciate one.
I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Our guest bedroom is my absolutely favorite place to grab a nap. It’s always clean, it’s upstairs and away from the noise, and it’s pretty! And now that I have it set up so nicely, I don’t want to ever leave!
Here are all of the new items I added from Macy’s . Just click on what you are interested in!
I hope this post was helpful and you feel inspired to get your guest bedroom in tip top shape for your loved ones! If you have any other tips, please leave them in the comments! A huge THANK YOU to Macy’s and ShopStyle for sponsoring this post.

What a beautiful room. I love your style, with all the antiques incorporated. You manage to make it cozy, yet light and ‘fresh’ feeling. But my real question is, How do you keep the dogs off the bed? Gates, keep the door shut?????
Love your blog. Found you 4 years ago and it was the beginning of a serious update to my style 🙂
Sheaffer says
Thank you so much, Diane! This bedroom is upstairs and the dogs don’t go upstairs. Thank you so much for being a loyal reader for the last 4 years! xoxo

Come on over! We can spoon. 🙂 I took a much needed nap on Tuesday and it was glorious. I turned on the fans and diffused the lavender and everything! 🙂

If my kids can’t find me this weekend, it’s because I walked over to your house to stay in your guest bedroom. Haha! Seriously so beautiful and cozy! Also, we bought our new mattress from Macy’s. By far the best deals and selection form everywhere that we shopped! 🙂

Good to know about the mattress deals! I had no idea until I was putting this post together!!!

Macy’s has the BEST mattress’ to choose from! Years ago my husband and I bought a mattress from a mattress store. It was shot after 3 years and they refused to honor the warranty. After that, I refused to go to a mattress store to buy a mattress as all my previous mattress’ were from Macy’s and they last!
