Black, Cognac, and White!!!

So the BLACK + COGNAC post that I first did a couple of years ago (during the fall) still remains one of PTMT’s most popular posts ever.  For some reason, the idea of pairing black with brown was EARTH SHATTERING.  Lots of you ladies were afraid, but after we all held hands and did it together, it was LIFE CHANGING.
Yes.
EARTH SHATTERING.
and
LIFE CHANGING.
I’m going to stand by those statements. 🙂

Now I seriously cannot imagine wearing a black shirt, black boots, and carrying a black bag all at the same time.  Which is of course exactly what I would have done prior to 2013.
Now, I much prefer to mix things up and make it more interesting by wearing brown boots and carrying a brown bag!  (A really pretty cognac is my favorite brown.)
For fall and winter, I also love to throw gray in the mix!

So….when I saw this next pic on the Nordstrom site (with my new favorite Madewell tee), I knew I would be recreating it.
It combines BLACK, COGNAC, AND WHITE!
The white really freshens up the combo for spring and summer, and I gotta say, I LOVED IT.

Okay girls, before I show you how I did it, you need to brace yourselves.
I’m trying out something new today.
Last week the hubby was off on Wednesday, and we headed to Spoon’s (one of our favorite spots on the square) for lunch.  I got dressed, took my outfit pics at home like I always do, and we headed out.
After we got there, I had an idea.
What if I had him take pics of me like a REAL GROWN UP BLOGGER would do?!?
Could we do that?
I mean, should we do that?
I’ve been blogging for almost 3 years now, and I figured it might be about time.
So I put on my big girl pants.
And we did it.
I’m going to be honest, I was a NERVOUS WRECK, but we actually had a
lot of fun (and a lot of laughs)!

And before we leave today, I want to show you a Splurge Vs. Steal I first talked about a couple of weeks ago.
You girls know I love my Gorjana necklace on the left, but many of you didn’t want to spend $85 on it even though you loved it too!
This is the graphic I showed you as soon as I found the alternative online,
but I told y’all I had ordered the “steal”  myself so I could compare.

Well, the “steal” version arrived!  And it’s awesome!
They aren’t EXACTLY alike, but they are pretty dang close!
And since the steal version is $53 cheaper, I’m thinking many of you might even prefer it.
There are differences, but I definitely like the “steal” version too.
The original Gorjana is much more dainty.  It doesn’t have as many discs, and the discs are smaller.
If you are really going for a dainty necklace, I think you should stick with the original.
But if you are just wanting the look, I think you will love the steal version too!

Of course, many posts (let’s be honest…..most posts) will still be me in front of a mirror with my cell phone.  It’s just easy to do those pics, and sometimes having Chris with me to take pictures just isn’t in the cards.
HOWEVER.
When I am able to take pics like the ones above, I think I want to try.
What are your thoughts?
I know that change is sometimes hard :),  but maybe y’all are actually ready for a change?

I finally took your persistent advice and went to Nordy’s to try on the Natori bra you rave about. Listen, like many I detest bra shopping. Blech. I’ve been known to grab something off the clearance rack and take it home, hoping it will be “good enough”.


Honest to goodness, you’ve gone from a polite whisper in my head to giving me a virtual “FOR THE LOVE!” lecture every time I put my old saggy bra on.


Once again, you are RIGHT! I don’t know if I’ve ever said this sentence in my life, but I love this bra. So, so comfy, and the girls are happily supported and at attention again!


I wanted to wear this for a day before I committed to more than one…the sales gal said they are price-matching thru Tuesday. I’m going to order the sassy purple color right now.

    Love the pictures but here is what I noticed most, its still March and you are outside with your toes showing and just a light little denim jacket…I"M SO JEALOUS. I know you are in Texas, I'm in Southern Ontario and we got another blast of the cold last night with high cold winds and more of the white stuff. It was almost all gone and now the ground is covered again. Socks, gloves and warm coats are still necessary around here. We are dying for spring.

    Both….I like both! The grown up blogger pics are too cute, but you can't stop the mirror selfies. Ok….what's up with no pockets. I bought the Target white jeans and didn't notice until I got them home that the front pockets are sewn shut. What the what?? So….I ordered the Articles of Society white jeans and guess what….yep….the pockets are sewn shut. Sometimes a girl has to have her pocket, Maybe to put the key fob in your pocket while loading groceries. Real life….we need our front pockets! Did you miss them having them on the Target jeans? Or is it just me?? Oh….and I love your outfit! Black, white and brown is so classy!

    Ok, now, as to the pics…I've been reading your blog for just under a year and I adore it. And I remember thinking at first that the pictures were different than what I was used to on a blog…BUT I think that's why I liked it so much. The selfies are part of what makes your blog so appealing and approachable (well, that and your sense of humor!) That said, I really like the pictures you posted today. And the outtake–that takes me back to my point–it is perfect because you are being YOU!!! So I say, a combo? Do both! Definitely don't ever get rid of the selfies but I can appreciate the cute alley shots too. ; )

    I like the pics of you that you take in your house. Seems more real, and that's why we like you! I think if you happen to be outdoors while you are taking pics, then of course, that's perfect! But in my humble opinion I wouldn't make the extra effort to go outside to find a location and take pics. Change is hard and we like you just how we have you! 🙂

    The new pictures look great. That said, I really love your mirror pictures, as they make you seem more like a real live person like me. So many blogs look like magazine shots these days (complete with professional lighting and photographer) and I just have trouble connecting with them. So I'm all for the path of least resistance – if it's easier and/or more fun to take grown up blog photos, go for it. If it's easier to take the mirror photos, hurray and go for it.

    I like the new photos because they make me laugh, not at you, so don't be worried. Makes me laugh to picture myself strutting down an alley with my husband taking pictures and me saying, "no not that angle." LOL! I also like the old photos because they are real to me. A mom at home in her house trying on clothes that she has shipped because there just isn't time to go to the store. Plus I enjoy seeing your home, makes you feel real to the readers. Both are fabulous tho! 🙂

    Sheaffer, as always a terrific post! I love your real life grown up blogger pics (maybe not your exact wording)! However, I think your usual ones are always fab! In fact, please, please do a tutorial on how you take them! So silly, but I've tried to recreate your stance & I just can't get it! You said once before what a flattering angle it is & we all need some help in that department at times! For years I've been telling people how to take my pictures, always from ab above angle bc that under chin doesn't look good at all! On anyone! It's just a horrible angle. I'll have them re-take pics, or ask someone else! I have no shame! So thankful for digital cameras/phones so we can check our pics immediately! How did we ever survive beforehand?!?!

    Gotta go to a dr. Appt, but I just wanted to say thanks always for your wonderful, fun, happy, & inspirational posts! You rock & we love you!

    Love the "grown up blogger" pictures! That made me laugh so hard! I'm slowly trying to get into fashion posts but I'm so nervous taking pictures in front of people! My hubby and I found an adorable alley way with tea lights this weekend and stopped to take some pictures but every time someone would walk by and look I'd be like oh stop and act natural, people are looking! So awkward!

    First, you look great in those photos! But here's the thing…I think your selfies are what make you more relatable than other bloggers. It just seems more real, like what my girlfriends and I would do/share. I prefer those photos cause they seem real. The other photos are what every other blogger does — yours is the only one I read daily. Keep doing what you do! I hope you don't change. But you do look great in the photos!!!

    Hi there I am a little late to the game but you asked for constructive criticism and I think I have some for you. Take it for what it's worth…nada. Anyway there is a woman who lives close to me who has a fashion blog. She dresses like the married with no kids woman she is. Not really my cup of tea but I still read her blog occasionally though. So a few weeks ago she and her husband were out taking pictures and my family was near by. I tried to watch inconspicuously and saw that it took them sweet forever to get the pics (of a single outfit) and I just super awkward for her. I bet they took pics for 25 minutes and I know there will be about 3 on the blog. Now looking at blogs or Insta of people posing up against a wall or whatever, I just feel awkward for them. Your pictures are adorable and I just wanted you to know that you don't need to "graduate"…we love you the way you are.
