Well, if you live in my neck of the woods, today is the first day of school!
We made it mamas!
We got through the summer and the ENDLESS amount of “I’m bored” and “I’m hungry” announcements! 🙂
#highfivesallaround
I’m actually going to REALLY miss the little guy.
We had a wonderful summer together.
Lots of late summer nights and lazy summer mornings.
Lots of playing.
Lots of coloring.
Lots of swimming with friends.
Lots of building with blocks. LOTS.
Lots of Minecrafting.
And best of all, LOTS of just hanging out and being together. I loved it.
So, now that we are approaching the end of August (how did this happen?), it’s time to start thinking about fall transition pieces. I think transition pieces are the hardest staples to find for a wardrobe.
If you are anything like me, there comes a time each year (usually around late September) that I feel ridiculous wearing shorts and sandals (even if it’s still 90 degrees outside), but I feel just as crazy wearing boots and long-sleeves.
So, transition pieces are all about meeting in the middle.
Today I’m highlighting a shirt that is great for
transitioning between seasons.
It’s short sleeve and light weight, but it’s FALL colors!
I’m going to show you two different ways to wear it today:
1)
With flare jeans and wedges.
2)
With cuffed jeans and flats.
Both ways will serve you well and will help you get out the door looking cute and seasonally appropriate in late September and all through October without feeling ridiculous.
Oh, wait!
I’m going to show you a 3rd way as well that will carry you well in to cooler temperatures.
3)
With cuffed jeans, flats, and a military jacket.

LOOK #1: Flares and Wedges
shirt / bag / my flare jeans (other flare jean options)/
long necklace / short initial necklace /
earrings / similar wedges
If the cognac bag is sold out again at Nordstrom, you can also find it at Sole Society HERE! (I know I received 3 e-mails/ facebook messages this week from people who were kicking themselves for not scooping it up!)
It’s the same price at Sole Society and Nordstrom, and good news…
they are running a FREE SHIPPING special right now on orders over $30!
Hopefully it’s well stocked at Sole Society!
I feel like the flares, the shirt worn out, and the hobo bag all combine for a cool boho or 70s vibe!
I wanted to show you how the bag can be worn both cross body as well as over the shoulder.
The strap has 7 holes on it, and you can adjust the strap length based upon your height and how you want to wear it (cross body or on the shoulder).
bag at Nordstrom HERE / bag at Sole Society HERE
$18 chevron necklace HERE /short initial necklace HERE
plaid top HERE*
*I’m not sure why the photograph doesn’t show it, but there is definitely a red stripe in the plaid.
The red line shows up on the site for sure and it a good representation of what it looks like in person.

LOOK #2: Cuffed Jeans and Flats
I switched out my flares for my cuffed Vigoss jeans, and I switched
out my wedges for pointy toe leopard flats! I really love pairing leopard with plaid.
shirt / bag / similar cuffed jeans from same maker/
long necklace / short necklace /
cobalt stud earrings / similar pointy toe leopard wedges
Look #3:
This look is exactly the same as Look #2 (see above for links), but with MY MILITARY JACKET thrown on top! This is my Old Navy military jacket that I’ve been obsessed with since last year.
My military jacket is HERE (thanks for restocking Old Navy!)
If you prefer ordering from Nordstrom, there are several military jacket options HERE.
Get The Look For Yourself:
Here are all three looks with THE TRANSITIONAL SHIRT side by side.
Good, right?

This one is longer for those of you that prefer that!
And remember that I showed these wo options from LOFT on Friday!
Both of these are 40% OFF until 10:00 EST (9:00 a.m. CST) with the code FLASH !!!
autumn anorak jacket / flight jacket
So there you have it, a shirt that I think is pretty dang near perfect to help us all transition into fall!
If y’all like this type of post, let me know and I will try to have some more in the near future.
See you back here on Wednesday for the Bachelor in Paradise recap!
xoxo,
Sheaffer 🙂
and several readers sang their praises as wel!
Tall girl here- perfect length for flats if you don’t mind the hem coming down the back of the shoe a bit and bunching up a tad (I like that actually) and you can stretch them out a bit for heels or boots. These are the best! My husband said they made me almost have a thigh gap (which I do NOT have!) Perfect for a mommy tummy and for running around after a toddler. Thanks for the recommendation in the first place! I would never have considered theses otherwise.
fringe bag , other fringe bags HERE
For size reference, I’m wearing a 26 in the jeans, so I suggest sizing down 1 size. They are stretchy, VERY soft, and have a very nice fitted look. I have them turned under right now on me (I’m 5’4″ and they were several inches too long), but I’m going to take them to Nordstrom and have them hemmed to an ankle length! But that’s good news for you tall girls because they will probably work for you!
I’m wearing a PETITE X-SMALL in the shirt. This year’s shirt was quite a bit longer than last year’s version. In fact, I thought it was way too long. So, I returned it and ordered the petite x-small.
I like the length soooooo much better.

Perfect transitional pieces!!! I have a picture of us at a fall party and I'm wearing shorts, tee, and sandals. You're wearing jeans, tall boots, and a shirt. Every time I look at that I think "whoa, I dressed wrong". Hahahahaha!!!
Narci says
That plaid top is everything!! Love it!!
Mix and Match Mama says
I really only love a few things in life, Jesus, my family, the Red Sox, coffee and plaid. I mean…plaid is just perfection. Happy first day of school mama! See you at breakfast :).
Michele @ The Joyful Home says
Yea for back to school! I'm dreaming about fall clothes on my blog today, also. Don't you wish these crazy hot temps would just go away so we could wear all these cute things without melting?! I love this plaid top and just ordered the gray jeans–thanks for the rec!
Not A Mom says
I so am getting some plaid for this fall/winter! I love that looked tucked in and with the military jacket but I am OBSESSED with the black shirt/grey combo in the last few pictures…obsessed.obsessed.obsessed.

I especially love you in the plaid top and flares:)
Brittany says
I love this post! Some of the reviews on the transitional shirt say it runs large. How did you feel about the sizing?
Sheaffer says
Oops! Hi Brittany! Sorry I forgot to mention it! I'm wearing a small. It's roomy for sure, but I wanted it that way! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Lindsey says
I love this post all wonderful ideas! What size do you have on in the plaid top?
Sheaffer says
Hi Lindsey! So sorry I forgot to mention it in the post! I'm wearing a small….it is roomy for sure, but I wanted it that way! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
MommyLu says
Love the colors in the plaid top! Side note – I noticed Saturday that the Vigoss from the Anniversary Sale are restocked. The pair I ordered on the first day of the sale were too big and I had been hoping to get them a size smaller because they were so comfy. My exchange is already on the way!
thebusybrunette says
I love the way you've styled that top! I think my favorite, though, is look #2 with the cuffed jeans and leopard flats. I'd never think of putting leopard flats with that outfit, but it really works and looks adorable! I hope all goes well for Carter on his first day. Keep us all posted! My little guy starts kindergarten next week and I go back to school for inservice tomorrow. Boo.
On the bright side, fall fashion is upon us! 🙂

Excellent, very informative post today!!! Giving me some great ideas!!! Have a great week!!,
Kim says
I get it….most of your readers are probably all small and petite like you are! However a few of us faithful readers actually need to purchase XL's. 🙁 And, believe it or not, we usually can't get away with the Junior sizes. Can you sometimes include some options that will include XL in women's sizes? If I am the only one with this problem, then maybe I will just need to frequent other blogs to gain some style and rely on you on how to put things together.
Sheaffer says
Hi Kim! I will definitely try to get better at this. Today I did post 2 Plus Size options for transitional shirts in the widget right below the collage of me in all 3 looks…..but I know that I don't do it often enough. I also try to show pants from the women's department as well…and when I do, I try to remember to mention that they are from the women's department (and not the juniors). Thanks for the request, and I will do my best to make improvements in this area!!!! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Deena Simair says
I need that plaid top!!!!!!
Diana Fernandez says
I absolutely love your posts but I would love it even more if you could post some ideas for those of us who work outside of the house who cannot wear casual attire. Just a thought…
{Hi Sugarplum!} says
That plaid top is darling on you! And if I look half as cute as you in flare jeans, I'll be wearing them all season!!

I would love more posts with ideas for transitional outfits.

It's the year of the military jacket for me….I am on it!!!

I've been desperately searching for a navy cargo jacket. Any ideas?
Emily H. says
Just ordered the top! I love your blog and I loved this post. Seeing different options to style one piece is super helpful as I get stuck in outfit ruts all the time. My kids have been in school for a few weeks now and I was sad the first day, but I got over it pretty quick. 😉
Amber Reese says
Do you feel like the grey pants are really tight on your calves? They look like they are in the online picture, and I sometimes find that to be a problem with some skinny jeans. Just don't want to feel like I am suffocating, ha!
Sheaffer says
Hi Amber! They are tight on my calves, but not too tight. The fabric is VERY soft and stretchy, so they aren't uncomfortable at all! I love them with flats and booties, but because they are so fitted, I think they'll look great tucked into tall boots as well! Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Alys says
I just bought a military jacket for the first time (Why didn't I get on board earlier?!) a couple weeks ago and I want to wear it so bad, but it's like a million and two degrees! #bringonfall
Suzanne @ Life is A Mix says
Let's just thank the clothing fashion Gods that flares and boot cut jeans are making a comeback. So.Very.Flattering! Of course, it happens now that I've spent a fortune on skinnies but really, I don't even care. I'm just happy to see my favorite style jeans in rotation again!!
Cameron Cummings says
What size do you have in the Old Navy jacket?
Melanie Lien says
I need that purse and those flair jeans. That outfit is so precious!

Ok, so maybe I'm the only one with an issue in this department but every time I tuck a shirt in or do the "half tuck" I feel like I look like a complete goober. Any tips?? Thanks!! -Kara
Sheaffer says
I've been contemplating making a 1/2 tuck video in the future!
Anonymous says
I think that would be great!!

Hi Sheaffer! Can you please help me? On the 'Nikki' flare jeans- what do you think of the backside of those? On the Nordstrom website the pockets look so high- kinda like it would not be that flattering? Im not near a store to try on 🙁 Maybe your thoughts would help! Thank you!
Melissa
Sheaffer says
Hi Melissa! They don't bother me, but even if they did, it wouldn't really matter. Most of my shirts cover the majority of my bootie anyway! Ha! 🙂 xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Angelina B. says
I LOVE that shirt! I'm going to have get it. If choosing between jeans, would you choose a flare jean or the grey stretch jeans for this Fall? I've noticed the flare jeans are coming back… Unfortunately mine from 6 years ago no longer fit my booty :-/
Sheaffer says
Hi Angelina! Hmmmmm…that's a hard call. They are so different! I know I will wear the grey ones much more often. The flares will probably be more of a "go out" type jean for me since they have to be worn with tall heeled shoes. Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Angelina B. says
Oh, excellent point! I forgot with flare jeans I either had to have them hemmed or wear tall shoes… Grey jeans it is! Thanks for the help!

Do you think the old navy jacket runs true to size? What size are you wearing? Thanks
Sheaffer says
I'm wearing a petite small! I normally would wear a small. Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Meghan says
Hi! I am tempted to try out some flare jeans for the fall, but not sure what shoes I would need to wear with them. I really prefer flats, but I wonder how they will look with flares. Also- I'm short and will be looking for a flare with a 29" inseam if you have seen any good options out there for shorty ladies. Thanks!
Anonymous says
Hi Sheaffer, Can you please help me? In LOOK #2: Cuffed Jeans and Flats are the jeans you are wearing Vigoss? How come the holes in your knees look so much bigger than the ones pictured on the Nordstrom website? I like the bigger holes. Thanks!
Sheaffer says
Hi there! They are Vigoss….but the ones I'm wearing are about 2 1/2 years old……so the holes are bigger after all of the washes! Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
