You heard me right. UNITS.
Does anybody out there remember UNITS?
I just scoured the internet and could barely find anything on them.
This was the best definition I found:
UNITS
A one-size-fits-all clothing store featuring knit skirts, shirts,
belts and leggings in coordinating colors. The clothes were sold in
UNITS boutiques located in malls throughout the United States. You
could buy six different pieces of UNITS clothing and create an entire
wardrobe from them. It goes without saying that UNITS did not make
it out of the 80s. (definition found here)
Can’t visualize them? Lucky you.
Well, here are some pics that I found.
I think the left one actually does the best job of showing you the true spirit of UNITS. 🙂
I
remember going to Northpark with my mom to the UNITS store. Everything
was in little cubbies. Looking back on it, UNITS were obviously NOT a
good idea. Obviously.
Fashion hindsight is 20/20.
What’s the point of me educating you people about UNITS? Well, Kelly and I wore coordinating red and white UNITS outfits with peplums in the talent show.
And y’all…..I don’t know if you know this yet…but peplums are back.
I’m not even lying.

UPDATE: My friend Shay commented on this post before 7:00 AM this morning, and I feel like I need to address it. This is what she said:
At first, I was very nervous that this post was going to end with a
picture of you in a unit. Thank you Lord, it ended in only a peplum.
You know I’m not the biggest peplum fan…but when you start the post on
units, ending in a peplum was the biggest sigh of relief. I’ve never
been so happy to see a peplum in my life.
I am laughing SO hard! I mean, I can see where the confusion was. I entitled the post “They’re Back”, and then I go on and on about Units. However, I LOVE that I got Shay to warm up to the peplum idea only because I wasn’t head to toe in UNITS.
Total unintentional score.

Sadly, my inspiration outfit does not have a peplum in it, but I swear, they are back.
The next time I feature this top, it will have a peplum in the inspiration photo to prove it to you.

Black and White Peplum top: GAP outlet
Pale Pink skinny jeans: LOFT
scarf: OLD NAVY (ordered it online last week and got it in yesterday!)
Black bag: Fossil (stolen from my sister)
I
have been seeing peplums all over pinterest as well as in magazines and
stores, but I was scared to try the trend out myself. This one was on
sale at the Gap Outlet for 40% off of $11.99.
And I had a coupon for an additional 15% off of a purchase of $75 or more.
So, as you know, in my mind, it was basically free.
Plus,
this peplum is just like a little bit of a suggestion of a peplum. There are some out there
that stand out from your body at a 45-90 degree angle. That peplum is
not for me.
I’ve got to give it to Kendi, I really like this outfit. And once again, I never would have put it together on my own.
If you like the scarf, go here mmediately! It is on sale right now for $12!
I also got this one for $13 and I love it! It’s a great infinity neutral scarf that will go with so many things!
While your there, you could should also pick up some colored skinny jeans for $30
If you don’t have a pair of colored skinnies, you NEED them. This isn’t a frivolous purchase people.
You really do NEED them. In fact, I think you need several pair.
What better way to add them to your closet than for $30 a pop?!?
Listen, I get it, the first time you put them on you will feel like the bottom half of you is screaming “LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! I LOVE PURPLE!”
(or whatever the color may be).
But I promise you, you will get used to them. After you wear them a couple of times, you no longer feel like they are screaming.
If you give it time, they will just be whispering sweet nothings like “look how darling I am”.
Answer the call of the colored skinny jean today.
Seriously, they’ve been calling for like over a year.
Answer already.

I remember being in like first grade (seriously) and my next door neighbor who was a few years older then me, Julie Jacobs, wore units. I remember even then thinking, ummm, really? At first, I was very nervous that this post was going to end with a picture of you in a unit. Thank you Lord, it ended in only a peplum. You know I'm not the biggest peplum fan…but when you start the post on units, ending in a peplum was the biggest sigh of relief. I've never been so happy to see a peplum in my life.

I loved units, I can't lie. I think I rocked the units jumpsuit more than I should have….I was young, don't judge!
Let me share a little scarf secret…Forever 21 is full of cute ones for under $10!! And jewelry…it's like a meca of cheap, but really cute stuff!! Just go during school hours so you do not have to fight with the teeny-boppers that should actually be shopping there! 😉 Love your blog!!

I'm going to Mom and Dad's this weekend. While I'm there, I will find pictures of the unit and the coca cola shirt. You're welcome.

I did a units fashion show at some mall. For real. I can clearly remember thinking "I look Sooooo professional and sophisticated". I was in 6th grade.
I'm obsessed with peplum. Asked For this darling top for my birthday (it's seriously cut and magnetted (word?) to my fridge. I did not get it. My birthday easy aug 11). Have shopped a bazillion peplum dresses online. They are all in carts. Waiting to be purchased. Sad since I'm on shopping restriction. Good thing Sheaffer is teaching me how to repurpose my torquoise tshirt from 1991 (no joke)

Ps. Did I ever mention the matching coca cola swimsuits my sister and I wore….
Ahhhh….
That was the summer we got ALL the boys….

Remember the belts…where you would layer a few colors to get some major color blocking going? So SEXY!

First of all, I LOVE your blog!! I'm addicted to seeing what you're wearing every day! And I'm also a fellow LOFT addict. 🙂 I love that all your stuff is afforadable. Anyway, I want to experiment more with patterened scarves this year instead of being matchy-matchy all the time. I really like that Old Navy scarf you have! Can you tell me if this is the one you got? Thanks!

Hi Jenna! Thanks for the sweet words about the blog! And yes….that is the right scarf! I have it in the "white multi". I have already worn it 3 times for 3 very different looks, and I've received several compliments each time. That's a lot of bang for your buck!
Thanks for commenting!
Sheaffer 🙂

Thanks so much! I ended up picking up the scarf AND ordered some purple skinny jeans from Old Navy!! Can't wait to wear them. I even bought a lighter purplish top to go with them, which I hope will work.
