Yesterday was an extremely hard day for our family. We had to say goodbye to our precious Scout. Chris, Carter, and I are all broken-hearted. Still, we feel blessed to have had 12 amazing years with the absolute sweetest dog on the planet, and we are forever grateful that he was a part of our family. I won’t share all of the details, but we first took him to the vet on Friday morning, and after lots of iv’s and tests, we determined on Tuesday morning that it was time to let him go. We miss him terribly but find peace in knowing he’s no longer in pain. Scout was truly the perfect dog for our little family. This picture was taken about a year ago, and it will always be one of my favorites
I went through hundreds of pictures yesterday, and the three of us took turns sharing lots of our favorite memories. I didn’t have the energy to go through the pics pre-Carter (Scout was our first born after all), but I hope to share some of those another time. I literally could have included over 200 pictures, but I decided to just show some of our real highlights together.
And this was taken Thursday night, before we realized something was wrong on Friday morning. Things changed so quickly.
Looking back through these pictures, I have no doubt that Scout knows he was a treasure to us. And I certainly see how much he loved us too. We Love You, Scouty Bud. You will always be a member of our family.
Susan Jeffries says
Oh my gosh I am so heart broken for your family. I know you loved this precious dog so much. We also have an only child and we see our two labs as her brothers – very much family members. I will pray for peace for your family – especially your son who has lost his best buddy. Blessings, Susan

After the passing of our 14.5 yr old yellow lab Topper, October 15 our boys age 17, 21 and 25 were devastated. He was their partner in crime. I read right after his passing that a dogs soul leaves the world as easily as it enters…there is no struggle like humans have. I hope that helps a little….give yourselves time to grieve.
Carrie says
Oh noooooo, I am so sorry- tears rolling down my cheeks as I comment. My 11 yr old golden is sitting next to me, head in my lap– a great reminder to never take him for granted. Sending you hugs…

Oh Sheaffer! That is heartbreaking. I want you to know your pictures of Carter with Scout touched my heart. I have a 6 year old little girl and while we were dog people before her and knew we would be again your pictures helped to convince me it should be sooner rather than later. Our little English Bulldog puppy has been home 3 weeks ago and Mira Love is over the moon. I hope she has a buddy in him like Carter had in Scout. Praying for peace and comfort for you all. XO

People that have not had the gift of having a pet truly miss out and may not understand that they become a family member as much as any human could. I’m so sorry for your loss, he truly looked like he loved you as much as you all loved him. Sheaffer, I am so, so sorry for your loss. I am crying as I look at these sweet pictures, because I know the love of a dog is so special and unlike anything else! I also know how much that precious dog meant to all of you, but especially Carter. Both of them were blessed to have each other. Take comfort in the fact that Scout had a life filled with joy and love – he certainly knew he was family. I know God is pleased with the care and respect that you gave to his creation, and he will hold your tears in a bottle and bear your burdens. Prayers for comfort and hope in Jesus – I am so, so sorry.
Abbie says
Sheaffer, I am so sorry your family had to say goodbye to Scout. He’s a handsome fella, and it’s obvious he is loved and treasured. I said goodbye to my sweet Tana Jane (shepherd mix) last April, and I know how difficult it is. I cried for you this morning, and I hope you are taking comfort in knowing that you provided a fun home filled with love for your buddy. Hugs to your whole family.

Sharon Scott says
When we lost our dog, Opie, quite quickly a few years ago this quote really got to me. Hope it helps you and your family as well.
“I have sometimes thought of the final cause of dogs having such short lives and I am quite satisfied it is in compassion to the human race; for if we suffer so much in losing a dog after an acquaintance of ten or twelve years, what would it be if they were to live double that time?” Walter Scott
Melanie says
Dogs really are our best friends. I have to admit, I laughed through some of these photos (Scout with the paci) and felt total sweetness and a nostalgia with Scout’s head lying anywhere near baby Carter. I know how hard it is to lose a pet- they’re another member of the family. Sweet thoughts coming to you guys.

I am very sorry for your heartfelt loss. These pictures captured how lucky your family was to have such an awesome dog (and Scout, of course, blessed to belong to a loving, caring family). A suggestion that down the road (when your heart aches a bit less) you check out Shutterfly. I had a blanket made for each of my 3 kids with our beloved dog’s picture on it. They always have him with them even away at college. Dogs are a gift from heaven that sadly don’t stay long enough with us. Thinking of you and your family.
MelanieL says

I’m so sorry for your loss! We lost our golden Murphy last year to cancer . He was 10.
Happened very quickly! So I understand your pain. My daughter made a book with all our favorite Murphy pictures and we have it on a table. My husband looks at it every day.
It has taken a year to finally be able to have another dog…. In fact we got two… Mollie and Millie.. Goldens. Joy has returned to our home. It will take time but will come for you too!
Sanna says
I relate to this comment so much! It has been two years since I lost mine, and had it not been because my boyfriend moved in with his black lab, (whom I love to pieces) I would still not be ready to get another one. Dogs are such a huge part of a family, actually scratch that, they are family. I always tell people, don’t think about it as replacing your dog, because none of them can be replaced. They are all so very special. I love that you have two new goldens, and Murphy will always have a huge part of your heart. I also relate to your husband looking at the pics every day. I look at mine every day too. Bless your family.
Stephanie J. says
My heart is broken for you and that sweet little boy of yours! It’s been 7 years and 3 kids later since I had to do the same thing with my sweet dog and I still cry sometimes. Dogs are the best! I hope your family is doing okay.

Oh my goodness, the pictures alone made me cry! Crying for a dog you don’t know — that means they are powerful pictures of love and happiness. What a blessing he was to your family, and all of your memories of him will turn more “sweet” than “bittersweet” with time, but I’m so sorry for these hardest moments you’re going through now. How incredibly brave and unselfish of you to recognize his needs above your own wants. What a lucky boy to be that loved.
Jodi says

Having to say goodbye like that is so hard… That special bond between Carter and Scout is undeniable – it practically jumps off the screen and grabs my heart, and I don’t even know you guys! I’m so sorry you are going through this. It’s the absolute worst part of owning pets – telling them goodbye. Scout does indeed look like a really sweet dog. How wonderful to know that he will always be the one that taught your Carter to love and appreciate dogs. That’s a lasting legacy.
Tiffany says
Such a warm heartfelt tribute, I can feel the love emanating from the screen. Truly a blessed relationship you all shared. Thinking of you all.
Farryn Bussa says
Oh no. I’m so sorry to hear about Scout. Animals are such a huge part of the family and it’s so incredibly hard to lose them. Prayers for you guys.
Laura says
So very sorry for your loss, Sheaffer ❤️❤️ They take a piece of you when they leave and you’ll never be the same. Sending peaceful thoughts and virtual hugs.
Laurie S says
So very very sorry about the passing of Scout! As soon as I saw the title of your post in my email, I said “uh oh”. LOVE all the pictures of your family with Scout. Scout was Carter’s “big brother”. The love shines through the pictures… The Lord knew what He was doing when He put one of His dear creatures in your care. Praying for you all, and that, in time, the grief will be replaced with the sweetest memories of your Scout. I have a 12.5 year old Golden, and it frightens me that one day she will be gone. One of my friends tells me that when you feel a pang in your heart about Scout, it’s when his spirit is wagging his tail, saying “hi” to you! Take care of each other – love, grieve, cry to the Lord, for He understands all… Hugs from CA!
Galen says
While I don’t know you personally, I do know what a member of the family our pets can be. Having lost my Zoe two years ago it still pains me to think about her. What a beautiful tribute you posted to Scout. It is clear that he loved you all just as much as you loved him. May you all find comfort in your memories of him and in knowing he is at peace and no longer in pain. Wishing you time to heal.
Margaret says
A boy and his dog – nothing better. So sorry for your loss – our fury friends are just the best.
Julie says
So sorry for your loss. I recently lost my 20-year-old cat, and the main thing that got me through it was this: I decided that instead of being sad about her loss, I was going to be happy for all of the years that I did get to have her in my life. And with that came many years of love, laughter, and joy. Try to focus on that. The pictures you have are amazing and so sweet! You were all so lucky to have had him, and he was so lucky to have had you all.
Cherie says
So sorry about your precious Scout. We also have a Golden named Scout and her brother, Tucker. We’ve been where you are and it is so hard and heart breaking. They are such good dogs and so much a part of the family. Hugs to you and your family.
Tiffany says
I’m so sorry to hear your sad news. Our family lost our sweet Bella dog 3 weeks ago and we are all very slowly healing. They are our furry family members and the loss and grief are definitely real! Take comfort in the knowledge that you gave your Scout a wonderful life full of love. You can actually see it in the pictures! He looks so proud and happy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I’m so sorry! They become such a part of your family. When I was little I was told our family dog was running in the clouds eating as many treats as she wanted! What a beautiful thought! 🙂 What a wonderful home you gave Scout! Treasure the memories! Hugs!

I don’t know you, but after following your blog and instagram I’ve related to your son and dog’s relationship and how much it mirrors my son’s relationship with our dog and this post made me cry for the loss of Carter’s dog “brother.” I am so sorry for your loss.

Oh Sheaffer- I’m so sorry. Dogs are our most constant friends. I’m such an animal lover- tears are rolling down my face from scrolling through these precious photos of Scout and your little guy. There is so much love and joy in those pictures. We lost our dog of 12 years, Meshach, this past October and sometimes I forget for a split second and think he’s going to greet me at the door. So many memories. This quote is on a Curly Girl Designs card: “Some soul mates have wet noses.” One thing you can do that is so sweet- get Scout’s paw print engraved on something for your son, maybe a picture frame or little keychain as a special memory. Hugs!
Allison says
So sorry. Our golden is 12.5, too. These pics are precious….and will be treasured by all of you.
Rebekah says
So, so sorry for your loss. We recently just went through the same with my 13.5 year old Aussie, and know the sadness of losing your first baby. Prayers for your family.

Oh, Sheaffer, I’m so very sorry for your loss. I lost my fur baby in November at 15 1/2 yrs old, so I know how truly heartbreaking it is. If only they could live forever! Prayers for you & your family during this tough time.
Brooke says
I am so sorry for your loss. I’m thinking of you and your family during this hard time. He was such a cutie. My family had to put our dog to sleep last year very suddenly and the pain was unbearable for a while. They’re such a huge part of any family.
Jeanie says
Sheaffer, my heart absolutely aches for you and your family, and I write this with a big ol’ lump in my throat. You’ve written before about how close Scout and Carter were; Carter must be absolutely devastated. I am a huge dog lover (currently have three) and truly know what you’re going through. I know Scout’s last trip to the vet was the hardest thing ever. Unfortunately, I’ve had to do that more times than I like to think about. I have had so many dogs, and I think about them every single day. It helps to know we’ll all be together sometime in the future. God bless you and your family as well as Scout.
Michelle Cox says
Oh I am so sorry to hear this! Such an incredible loss but oh such beautiful memories! Sending hugs!
Kelly says
I am so very sorry!! Dogs are such a wonderful part of the family and leave a tremendous hole when they are gone. I remember crying over the loss of my childhood dog every single night for more than a month (and periodically for much longer) and I was 20 years at the time. One of my dogs now is almost 14 and I worry every single day about something happening to him. Even though my kids were all born before we got him, they were little and don’t remember life without him. I can’t imagine life without animals but it is so, so hard to lose them. I will be praying for your family.

My heart is breaking for you all. I know exactly what you are feeling. A couple of years ago we lost our 18 year old dachshund. Love the picture of Scout with the pacifier in his mouth! All the pictures are great…..what a treasure!

Sheaffer, I am so very sorry to hear about Scout. Pets truly are a part of our families. Just over a year ago, we unexpectedly lost our dog when she became sick suddenly. During that difficult time, I found the Rainbow Bridge Poem, and it gave my family and I a great deal of comfort. Maybe it will help you as you deal with this heartbreak. Sending my love.

I am so sorry for your loss. Saying goodbye to a furbaby is the most difficult part of loving them. I know exactly what you are all going through as just last week we said goodbye to our Tucker (15 years). He isn’t suffering anymore and we were so blessed to have him for as long as we did, but it still feels like a part of me died with him. ((Hugs)) to you all. Cherish the memories always.
Noreen Hrul says
Shaeffer,
I’m so heartbroken to hear the news about your beloved dog, Scout. We also have a golden retriever, Bear, who resembles Scout and he’ll be 10 this summer. As I am a regular reader of your blog, I’d often show my daughter pictures of Scout with Carter. She is an only child too and she calls Bear her brother. We were both so sad upon reading the news that he passed. He had a wonderful life thanks to you. May your memories provide comfort during this difficult time.
Thinking of you,
Noreen

Scout was a beautiful dog and all of the pictures you posted were adorable. I’m so sorry for your loss.

I once saw a cute thing that said to give your aging or ailing dog the last “best day” when you know their time is here. But, for Scout, you gave him the “best life” instead. Your post was so sad (I’m bawling) but yet so sweet today. Prayers for your sweet family.

I am very sorry for your loss. We lost our fur baby, Ozzy, in November after having him as a part of our family for 11 1/2 years. Losing a beloved pet is so painful. I have always said for all the pain we feel now at this moment I wouldn’t give up a second for all the love we had and will forever cherish in our hearts. So sorry.

Sheaffer, I am so sorry to hear about Scout. I know how sad it is to lose your family pet. In October 2012, my first baby Sweetie past away. She had been a member of our family for 15 years and was a sweetheart. She adored my son and the feeling was mutual. I still remember the day I brought my son home from the hospital and introduced him to Sweetie. It was love that only grew as my son grew. It was heartbreaking for all of us when she died. She is missed so much and even to this day it makes me want to cry. I’ll say a prayer for you and your family as you adjust to life without Scout. It’s wonderful you have such beautiful memories of Scout.
Sanna says
Oh my gosh, I instantly cried reading about your precious dog. I think it is one of the hardest things to go through. I lost mine almost 2 years ago, she was also 12, and to be honest, I don’t think I’ll ever get over it. And reading or hearing about any other people going through it, instantly makes me so incredibly sad for them. Your dog is precious. And I am so incredibly sorry that you and your family are going through it now. Dogs and animals in general are so amazing! Lots of hugs!!! And shared tears!!!

Sincerest condolences….in their lives and in their deaths, dogs teach us and our children precious lessons too innumerable to list. In my 58 years, we have grieved the loss of seven dear canine family members and we have four living with us now. They deserve to be mourned as true, trusted and loyal loved ones. In time, it will be the wonderful funny and sweet and happy memories that come to mind when you think of Scout, but you will always miss him and you won’t ever forget him either…loved seeing your pictures.

Pam Karkow says
Tears. I am heartbroken for you. We have a golden too, she’s 15 and definitely slowing down. My youngest thinks she’s a person and I have tons of pics just like yours. My absolute favorite of yours is the paci pic! That’s a keeper for sure. Scout was lucky to have such a loving, sweet family, and special place in your hearts. XOXO
Sanna says
Perfect comment “my youngest thinks she’s a person.” She has life figured out young :-). Since that is exactly what they are, humans, with fur coating, and a better friend than anyone could possibly ask for. I actually even think they are better humans than actual humans are. Loved your comment 🙂
Pam Karkow says
Yes, Sanna! Unconditional love from our furry friends. I agree with you totally. 🙂

My heart is absolutely broken for you and your family! I too have a precious 12 year old fur guy in my house and he is my first baby too. Scout was obviously loved so much and had such a wonderful life. You and your family gave that to him and that’s all any dog can ask for.
Sanna says
Oh God, Shaeffer, this is day 2, and I am in tears again for you. My aussie mix passed on memorial day two years ago, and two days later my 15yr old cat. And so every year when it is close to that day, I am so so emotional. I so know how you feel. It is the hardest thing. I am so so glad that there are so many people commenting. It shows how much everyone cares and shares the love for animals. I hated coming home every day after it happened, without the wagging tail meeting you at the door. My cat slept in my bed with me and so at night it was no better, missing him too. They do take such a huge part of your heart with them. Your pics with Scout are amazing and show exactly the love of a dog. I am just so so so sorry for your loss and your hurting. And also for anyone else going through this with their furbaby!! We now have a 5yr old black lab and a 15 year old cat that I have had since kitten, and the thought alone of having to go through it again, makes my heart sink.
Laura says
So very sorry for your loss.

I have been a follower of your blog for a while now, and I feel like we are friends. 🙂 I always loved when you posted pictures of Scout because he always looked like he was smiling. I was a mess reading your post about him! Those were some of the sweetest pictures in the world with him and your son as a baby. What a sweet big brother! I’m pregnant with my first right now, and I hope our dog will be just like Scout was to your baby.
I hope your week has improved. Cherish your sweet memories.
Heather says
It is without a doubt that Scout knew how loved and treasured he really was. He is on the other side of the rainbow bridge telling his doggie friends about his family and how he can’t wait for y’all to get there eventually so they can meet you.
Carter is really lucky to share that special relationship with his dog…and I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but it’s the first special dog that is the reason for the second dog, third dog, etc. 🙂
You’re in my family’s thoughts and prayers.

I just had to leave a comment for you & yours after seeing this post. We lost our 2 fur babies in a 10-month window last year & the pain is still so very present & raw. We are at a point where we can sometimes talk about them & laugh…the AMAZING memories are truly ENDLESS! BUT, the pain is also so intense b/c we also know & are reminded of EXACTLY what we have lost. We went from a family of 4 to a family of 2 & it has been so SO HARD~
We lost our Chocolate Lab, our amazing, Kya Mae, on March 18th of last year- just 8 days after her 12th birthday 🙁 & her rescued “brother”, our 13 yr old Golden, our sweet boy, Aiden, on December 18th.
Both to frontal lobe brain rumors- both after many seizures & both after being forced to decide when the time to let go had arrived…& it sometimes feels like it all happened just yesterday. Although his time w/ is from discovery to the end was days compared to almost 3 months w/our baby girl~
I see so much of the same mannerism and sweet love in your Scout as we had in our Aiden & KNOW how loving & just incredible that Golden love can be! Your pictures show so very clearly, EXACTLY how loving & loyal he was & therefore, the deeply painful loss that you are have to be goin through right now.
My best advice, is to cry whenever you feel like it & to be prepared for what reminds you of him that you didn’t expect it to…(& the flood of emotions that will surely follow)…
I have lost pets before, but, those 2 were such an integral part of our family & EVERY ASPECT of our lives~ & you seem to have had a similar relationship w/your boy.
Keep Kleenex near & know that it does get a little easier over time. (I’ve yet to go a day w/out tears, so I have no idea how much “time” it takes before it actually becomes bearable, but I know that time is somewhere on the horizon for all of us as we work through our grief…)
We will be sure to send lots of prayers your way as your working to cope w/your loss as well & wish you all the comfort & fond memories possible!
Much love & many prayers from fellow retriever (& blog) lovers!
Sheaffer says
Oh my goodness, Crystal. I am so sorry for your loss. The pain is so real, and even though we knew we would of course be incredibly sad, we had no idea how difficult this would be. We just miss him so much. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment. xoxo, Sheaffer

I read your blog pretty frequently, but I don’t ofter comment on blogs. This one really touched my heart. Like you 2 years ago we lost our beloved Daisy. She was a mutt we rescued from the shelter. My kids 6 and 7 at the time were crushed. We were all devastated. There was no warning she was happy and playing with us one day and gone the next. This is the 3rd dog my husband and I have lost in our 23 years together. This was the first for my kids.
We have learned through our last 3 beloved dogs that finding a new pup to love is the best healing for us. We will never forget the dogs that came before. Our home is adorned with beautiful pen and ink renderings of our old friends, but nothing heals us like saving another dog.
I know you are hurthing. Find your path to healing. You may not recognize it at fiirst. At first we felt like we were dsihonoring the past dog by finding a new dog to love so fast, but I think God opened a door that we chose to walk through and Marigold our new dog needed saving. Let God lead you.
