Last month I did a READER QUESTIONS week, and it was a hit! I’ve got 8 more reader questions for you today. Most of the them are about clothes…but there are a couple that are just real life questions.
I figure for every question I receive from one of you ladies, there’s at least another 25 or so of you that probably have the exact same question…so I’m hoping this post will be valuable to all of you!
(Disclaimer: If you’ve e-mailed me recently and haven’t received a response, I’m working on it! The sheer number of e-mails often overwhelm me, and it takes me a little bit of time to work through them. Thank you for your patience!)
Let’s get started!
Reader Question #1: Do you wear your Free People cowl neck tunic with leggings? – Amy
Hi, Amy! Well, this question is more complicated than a simple yes/no answer. I bought my first Free People Cowl Neck 4 years ago (in dark grey). I bought another one 2 years ago (in wine). And then I bought another a couple of weeks ago (in oatmeal).
Some might think that’s excessive, but it’s not like I bought all 3 at once. 🙂 It actually is quite sensible of me. I found myself wearing the grey one so often, that the wine one seemed like a no brainer a couple of years ago. And here’s the deal, I actually wanted the oatmeal one a couple of years ago, but my size was sold out. Sooooooooooo, buying it this year was the only logical thing to do. And by the time I bought the third one, I had no reservations, because I already knew how much I would wear it!
So….to answer your question…..is it long enough for leggings? The grey one and the wine one are long enough to wear with leggings, and I have on many occasions. But this oatmeal one? Not long enough for me at 5’4″. I guess they’ve changed the proportions?
Anyway, I’m fine not wearing this one with leggings because I will throw it on with jeans ALL. THE. DANG. TIME. Here I am wearing it super casually with y Hunter boots on a rainy day last week. I didn’t tuck it in because I wanted you to see the length.
cowl neck pullover / jeans / hunter boots
And here I am wearing it the next day (when it wasn’t raining). I mean, how could I not wear it? It was just laying on the chair in my bedroom practically begging to be worn again! You can see it’s also cute with a little 1/2 tuck.

Reader Question #2: Hi Sheaffer! I adore your style and fashion tips! I was wondering how you feel about the current denim-on-denim trend, and if you could post some outfit ideas for it! Thank you so much & happy Thursday!!!! – Lauren W.
Hey, Lauren! Denim on denim gets a bad rap (I blame Justin and Brittany), but if done right, I think it’s totally cool and chic!
MY DENIM ON DENIM RULE: Put a lighter denim on top and a darker denim on bottom. Simple as that! The outfit can then be easily dressed up (ex. with heels and gold jewelry) or dressed down (ex. with converse and limited jewelry). All different types of shoes and accessories can be used for styling the denim outfit!
If you need a little inspiration (and convincing) before seeing my outfit today, check out my Denim on Denim Pinterest Board HERE. It’s this board that made me realize what my denim on denim rule was, because all of the pins I was pinning had light denim on top, and darker on the bottom. And that’s when I made my rule. 😉
Here’s my outfit! Thanks for the question, Lauren!

This next question was a comment left on the blog on my first Style it Again, Sheaffer post.
Reader Question #3: I absolutely love this new series! I’d like to put in a request if I may. ???? I purchased the camo jacket you talked about, and I’ve already worn it once and received so many compliments. But now I’m stumped. I need more ideas! Help me figure out other ways to wear it, please! The jacket is way out of my comfort zone, but I had so much fun wearing it, so let’s keep going! – Kate
Hi, Kate! I’m so glad you’re loving the jacket! And I think you’ll find that the more you wear it, the easier it will become to think of it as a neutral and pair it with just about anything!
CAMO JACKET: Style It Again
Emily, this was the first outfit you saw with the camo jacket. I had fun pairing it with stripes!
For size reference, I’m wearing a medium in the jacket. I ordered a medium because it says a medium is a 6-8, and I’m never a 2-4 in a jacket. HOWEVER, I do wonder if the small would fit me a little better. I’m wearing a small in the sweater.
camo jacket / striped sweater (plus size striped sweater) / wood bead tassel necklace / similar stretchy jeans(with no distressing)/ must have boots
For the 2nd outfit, I simply took what I wore under the leopard cape a couple of weeks ago….and I just switched out the cape for the camo.

And here’s the same outfit, I just punched it up a bit by adding a hot pink necklace !

And this might be my favorite way to wear it! I thought the red was kind of unexpected, and I like how the gold jewelry and heeled booties dressed it up a bit.

Here are all the outfits side by side. See? TOTALLY versatile.

This next comment was left on the Style it Again, Sheaffer post after the comment requesting more outfits for the camo jacket. 😉
Reader Question #4: Oh, goodie! You’re taking requests! I bought that “leather” drape front jacket and I need outfit ideas! – Melissa
BLACK FAUX LEATHER WATERFALL JACKET: Style It Again
Hi, Melissa! I think you’ve already seen this jacket two ways, but I’ve got a couple more for you today!
As you know, our jacket is stretchy, soft, it drapes beautifully, and it’s extremely flattering. I love the waterfall styling, and think it’s a great addition to our closets. For size reference, a medium is a 6-8 (and I would never be a 2-4 in a jacket), so I got a medium and it is perfect.
Now, you can find our exact jacket here, but it’s sold out in black. 🙁 HOWEVER, for all of you ladies that don’t have it yet, I found THIS ONE! It’s actually the exact same jacket that I have in cognac (and I love it)! In fact, I like it more than the faux leather one that I’m wearing in today’s pictures. This one is more expensive, but I think it looks more expensive and it is worth the extra money. Click HERE and scroll to the middle of the post to see me wearing it in the cognac color.
Click HERE to see this jacket.
You’ve already seen these first two outfits.
This one is simple with a black tee and grey jeans.
similar jacket/like buttah tee / necklace / earrings / leopard belt / similar grey jeans HERE and similar distressed grey jeans HERE / MUST HAVE boots
And it’s cute with regular denim too! And just about every outfit is better with a leopard clutch. 😉
similar jacket/ like buttah tee / necklace / earrings / articles of society jeans / booties ON SALE / leopard clutch
And here’s a third way! So, you’ve now seen this outfit (grey sweater, white jeans, and taupe boots ) styled 3 different ways as well. With the leopard cape, above with the camo jacket, and now with this black jacket.
similar jacket/ grey sweater / white jeans / earrings care of Sole Society / pleated fringe boots care of Sole Society
And for another great look, I paired it with this plum tee, my leopard belt, and my must have boots.
And ladies, please pay attention to my $12 necklace.

And here they are, all side by side! Remember, even though the exact jacket I’m wearing is sold out in black, there’s THIS ONE that I like even more.

Okay, so this next one is a question I received last week on instagram. I didn’t respond to it on instagram, but I thought it would be kinda funny to talk about here. Chris wouldn’t allow me to respond to it on instagram (that whole “rise above” thing) :), even though I had already typed out a response. So, even though I never published it there, I’m going to publish it today, just because it’s funny.
READER QUESTION #5: Why do you always have that ridiculous face in your pictures?
This was the reply I had all typed out: The “ridiculous” face you speak of is just my regular face. The reason it’s in all my pictures is because it’s attached to my neck.”
I mean, that’s funny right? 😉 I would say 99% of the time people out in internet land are absolutely lovely. Every so often, I get a comment from somebody that is less than lovely. It’s fine….I know not everybody can like me. As the meme goes, I’m not queso. 😉
**********************************************************************
READER QUESTION #6:
Okay, so this one wasn’t really a question…it was a comment left either on facebook or the blog (can’t remember which), but the person commenting was saying that the new blardigan I had ordered for myself was more of a waffle knit. I couldn’t imagine that was true, but mine hadn’t come in yet, so I didn’t really know. Well, mine arrived so I can now comment!
So the fabric make-up is virtually the same. (The baby blardigan, original blardigan, and hooded blardigan are all 75% nylon and 25% rayon. And this new blardigan is 78% nylon 22% rayon). But even though the fabric content is pretty much the same, this blardigan does have a different texture in the body. The sleeves are exactly the same, but the rest of it is different. It’s not bad different, it’s just different! It does have a kind of raised, waffle knit texture, but it’s still the gloriously soft and silky fabric that we’ve all fallen in love with.
This one can easily be worn out of the house. It’s not nearly as long as the hooded blardigan or the original blardigan, and the shawl collar really makes it look like a regular cardi, not just a lounging cardi.

READER QUESTION#7: What’s it like having 2 dogs? We’ve always been a one dog family, but we lost our 12 year old lab last year. Your pups have us wanting another dog, and we are actually considering 2 dogs now. Full disclosure please, are 2 dogs so much more work than 1? – The Stillwell family
Hi, Stillwell family! Well, I was VERY against 2 dogs for a very long time. Chris and Carter always wanted two and I pretty much never even considered it. And then all of a sudden, I wanted two dogs too. (If you’re new here and want to see the post where we introduce the dogs to everybody and see the video when Carter found out we were getting 2, click HERE.)
Let me tell you the 2 reasons that 2 dogs are more difficult: 1) more hair 2) more poop.
That’s where the con list ends.
Every other single thing about having two dogs has been an absolute joy. They play with each other, they snuggle up with each other, and they are the best of friends. They keep each other occupied all day long, and I feel confident they are happier pups because of each other. If you are a puppy person, remember you can follow along @ourgoldenpups!

READER QUESTION#8: My husband and I just had our first child. Any special Thanksgiving or Christmas traditions that I can steal? – Lori
Hi, Lori! Great question! A tradition that I grew up with was my dad getting my sister and me a Christmas ornament each year. It would always be an ornament that somehow represented something that happened that year of our lives, and I always loved that he went out on his own to get the ornaments for us. We’ve continued the same tradition with Cater, and I just love it. It’s like a walk down memory lane each year we decorate the tree!
When Carter was 2 he got a cow (he loved moo’ing at the cows at the ranch), when he was 4 he got a pizza slice ornament since it was his favorite food at the time, and at 6 he got a baseball because he started playing on a team that year, and this year it was a no brainer…he’s getting this ornament. Actually, he getting two. 🙂 Every year we also like to put a photograph in a photo frame from the year. I can always find them HERE.

For example: wearing a striped shirt to a lunch, to a meeting, to a family dinner, or dressed up for date night. My life is mostly casual but I do love to kick it up a notch every now and again
Thanks!

My daughter and I love your blog — and your smiling face. I haven’t commented before, but after Question #5 I couldn’t not. Don’t let that beautiful smile falter. This world needs more cheerful people — it has more than enough clever snark. Thank you for your great suggestions. My daughter’s fall “uniform” is a direct copy of one of your outfits. And we’re so happy to hear about your dad’s progress. ‘Continuing to pray for his recovery — what a wonderful Christmas present that will be for you all.
Sheaffer says
Hi, Karyl! Oh my goodness! I didn’t expect to receive so many incredibly kind comments today. Thank you so much for encouraging me and thank you for your prayers! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂 p.s. I love hearing that moms and daughters are both reading the blog!

We give our kids ornaments too! They have so much fun pulling them out each year and reminiscing. My daughter is a senior in high school this year and soon she will be ready to take her ornaments with her, but I love that she will have a tree full of ornaments. (Even if she is embarrassed by the Hannah Montana guitar!) Love the blog and have for years!
Jeannette says
I just started following your blog in the last few days. Love it. (And the Instagram comment…I just don’t understand WHY people feel the need to be so nasty.) Love your smile and keep up the good work.
Sheaffer says
Welcome, Jeannette! So happy to have you as a new reader! Thanks for following along! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Whitney Pegram says
LOVE these posts & obsessed with that camo jacket!! ????
Whitney Kallenbach says
The ornament tradition is so great, because in my family, when I moved out and had my own tree to decorate I took many of the ornaments I had with me and it gave me a great, sentimental start for our family’s tree!!
cassie {hi sugarplum} says
LOVE this post! You look so stinking cute in every outfit! I need that cowlneck in every color, and I’m still bummed I missed the waterfall jacket! I’ll keep stalking it! xo

Shaeffer – love the Q&A! You are a sweet thing who has encouraged many of us (in fashion choices and in other ways) – don’t let the rude people of the internet get you down!
Sheaffer says
I won’t, Stephanie! There are wayyyyyy too many super nice people out in blog land for me to let the small handful of “less than nice” people bring me down. Thanks for the kind words! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Jenny Null says
I am cracking up about the question “about your ridiculous face”. You mean the SMILE you have on your face, with adorable dimples I might add!!
Thank you for keeping us looking cute at all times!!
Sheaffer says
Oh, yes! The dimples! I can’t imagine what she thinks about those!!! 🙂 Thanks for reading and for being so supportive, Jenny! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Jennifer says
Your ridiculous face??? Seriously, that’s the face of a happy, kind and successful at life kinda gal. Guessing the comment came from someone who is not familiar with those things! Poor thing.
Sheaffer says
Hi, Jennifer. So sweet of you to take the time to leave such an uplifting comment. Thank you so very much. Being “happy” and “kind” are important, so I’m glad to know that comes across to some. 🙂 xoxo
Jan says
Great comeback to the “ridiculous face” comment.
Love the denim on denim question/answer. I do wear occasionally wear my denim that way and my son always comments “Hey Mom, love your Texas Tuxedo”. Lol.
Enjoy your blog – one of the first things I read in the morning.
Sheaffer says
Hi, Jan! I’ve heard it called a Canadian Tuxedo before, but I like Texas Tuxedo better!!!

Sounds like a comment made in jealousy to me! I think you and your ridiculous face are beautiful! Xo

Hi, Ashley! I don’t know about jealousy, but my face definitely made her angry! Haha!!!! Thanks for the sweet words. xoxo

Love seeing your cute smile every morning! You have great style! Thanks for helping us women with no fashion sense!

Thank YOU, Stacy!!!! xoxo
Jen Zimmerman says
I happen to love your ridiculous face!!! 😉 And I, too, have the same ornament tradition! My mom did that with my brother and I growing up, then gave us all our ornaments when we got married, and now she does it for my 3 boys and I do as well. Decorating the tree each year is so much fun and the kids love it! On another note – last week I met up with a friend and the first thing she said was, “You’re wearing Sheaffer’s scarf.” 🙂 Thanks for being ridiculously awesome!!!!
Sheaffer says
Well, Jen! Thank you for loving my ridiculous face!!!!! Hahahahahaha!!!! 🙂 xoxo

Diane says
Hi Sheaffer, this doesn’t have to do with this post, but I just received my first Barrington bag, the Parker Petite Satchel and I could not be more pleased. It is roomy, but not too big, beautiful, light weight but sturdy. Thanks for introducing me to Barrington and yes, I used the STMT10 promo code, which was very nice.
Love your blog and you and your family (including dogs) are adorable!! So glad you always post that face!!
Sheaffer says
Hey, Diane!!!! I’ve been eyeing those Parker Satchels. I think they look so cute! Glad you are so happy with yours. Thanks for reading and for the support of me and my face. Ha! 🙂
Bev says
I’m left to assume the rude comment came from someone to whom smiling doesn’t comes naturally like it does for you. I loved your response and reading all the well-deserved, kind comments. You go out of your way to accommodate your readers. I know because you’ve promptly answered a couple of my questions. You don’t owe any of us anything yet you are always so helpful and thorough. Thanks for being you, don’t change one little thing!
Sheaffer says
Thank you for taking the time to comment, Bev! I’m so glad to hear that I promptly answered your questions…..I’m not always great about it, but I sure am glad that I sometimes am! Thanks for the encouragement! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Penny P says
I am glad that you had fun with that ridiculous comment about your face. People can be so rude! I think that you are adorable. Anyway, I enjoy your blog so much but I am so much older than you and some of the clothes looks “too young” for me. Any chance that you can do a segment or some options for us older, mature ladies? I am a huge Nordstrom shopper but I feel weird shopping in the BP department since that is where my daughters all shop. I am not thinking frumpy but more like what your Mom would wear. I mean, if you and your sister are so stylish, you must get it somewhere. ????
Sheaffer says
Hi, Penny! My mom is super stylish! I feature a lot of stuff from the women’s departments too, so you should DEFINITELY check out Wit and Wisdom jean. I love mine, and my mom loves hers too! Other brands to check out are Caslon and Halogen from Nordstrom. Thank you so much for the kind words! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Sara says
Sheesh – some people say that most ridiculous things. I love your blog & advice & style so i’m glad you’re here all the time showing us cute pictures!
And we LOVE having 2 dogs. We got our first puppy 4 years ago at Christmas and added our second puppy just over a year ago. And our older dog trained our younger one! It was so nice to have one dog who knew where to sleep, where the food & water were, where to go potty etc and the younger dog just followed her lead. It’s the best having 2!
Jen says
First, you are hilarious, talented, beautiful and your face is perfect! I love your blog and fashion tips…but there is one thing I think I love even more…your home style! I’m always sneaking peeks and I love, love love your tole trays, fabric choices, blend of antique and new….will you pretty-please show us your home? Hugs…j
Sheaffer says
Hey, Jen! I’ve been wanting to show more of my home…but when I start to take pictures, I see so many more things that I want to do before I show it! I’ll try to loosen up a bit and just do it! Thanks for the support!!! 🙂 xoxo
Kim says
I love your “ridiculous” face! That is what makes your posts, blogs and emails so fabulous! This is what I hate right now about social media. Thank you so much for sharing, I love all your posts, almost to the point I am not sure I can dress myself without checking with you!
Thank you for doing what you do!!
Kim
P.S. I have been in Dallas area twice in the last 3 months and driving in the horrible Dallas traffic, getting lost and then seeing a McKinney, Texas exit sign I so wanted to follow!! ❤️

Thank YOU for taking the time to leave such a sweet comment, Kim! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Heather Stanton says
Dear Sheaffer,
I have stewed all day about the comment of your fabulous face! I’m now in bed stewing even more! I have been following you for years! When you were new to PTMT….my mom in NY follows you as well. You have graciously met us both several times….AC….after my food surgery! Mom and I were not going to miss it! The “dear” comment on your face needs to be deleted! We look forward to your amazing posts, share your ideas, buy most of them (#problems!). Do not let that person steal your happiness! I’m happy to set them straight!! However, if you could let Mother Brown know that she shouldn’t save the hooded blardigan for Christmas, I would super appreciate it!!!! She has had it for me since the anniversary sale….I’m cold and need to be cozy! Xoxoxo.
Sheaffer says
Heather! I totally remember meeting you are your mom at AC! And don’t worry, no joy stealing happened! Now, listen to me Mama Brown….Your daughter is cold and in need of coziness!!!!! Give her the blardigan. Now. 🙂 Ha! xoxo
LibbyB says
I was so happy to see that others have ornament traditions. My addiction is photo ornaments. Our family tree is covered in santa pics and each of my girls have a tree that they receive an ornament for that is a framed school photo plus something that relates to the past year (a trip or an experience). My hope is that when my girls move out and have their own home they will be able to ‘view’ their life each Christmas.
Also, I love your face as well, also your blog has broken me out of my comfort zone and I’m loving it!
Kim says
That camo jacket looks like the perfect size on you. I would have never come up with all those combos. I really like the idea of a one item several ways post. I have SO many clothes but get bored cuz I can’t think of new ways to wear them. I leave that up to you clever bloggers to tell me????
And your face is very cute btw
Narci says
That ornament tradition is an awesome idea, and I LOVE that camo jacket styled so many ways. Love your ridiculously ADORABLE face, friend! Xo

I think your “ridiculous face” is perfect and the way HE made you!! Xoxo!! ❤️

OK…. I have a question, Sheaffer. I have seen a couple of different comments you have made referencing the different blardigans…. about wearing them out in public. Your comment regarding the shawl collar blardigan in this post was: “This one can easily be worn out of the house. It’s not nearly as long as the hooded blardigan or the original blardigan, and the shawl collar really makes it look like a regular cardi, not just a lounging cardi.”
I have the baby blardigan in taupe and the hooded blardigan in carbon. I’m waiting on the shawl collar blardigan, hoping they will offer it in black. I wear the two I have out in public all the time (I’m very cold natured), and if I am lucky enough to get the shawl collar blardigan in black, fully plan to wear it in public, as well. Am I missing something? Are they not meant to be worn publicly? Are people laughing behind my back cause I’m wearing loungewear in public? PLEASE tell me I am not crazy! LOL! Thanks, Sheaffer! And I have to say…. that if I did not follow your blog and take your fashion advice, I would have no clothes at all! 🙂
Sheaffer says
Hey, Karen! I’ve got a realllllllllly long answer for you!!!!
I wear mine out of the house ALL THE TIME. Some ladies do feel like the blardigans look too much like lounge wear to wear them out, but I am not one of those ladies. 🙂 Other people love theirs so much at home that they don’t want to take it out into the real world. They basically want to keep it special and pristine at home! 😉 In fact, I’ve heard from lots of readers that say they have 2 for that exact reason: they wear one around town, and they keep the other specifically for home.
I find that although I used to wear the original blardigan out of the house, I now really only wear my original at home. It’s over 4 years old now, and I really like how the cut of it allows me to wrap up in it. Yep, it’s definitely my favorite one for lounging at home. The original blardigan is also the one I got for my then 7 year old son a couple of years ago….and he still grabs it all the time at 9.
I wear both the baby blardigan and the hooded blardigan out of the house without any hesitation. Now, the hooded blardigan is quite long, so if I do wear it out of the house, I usually wear it with booties (otherwise, it grazes the tops of my boots). For you taller ladies, the hooded blardigan is great for leggings! And like I said, the new shawl collar blardigan will be able to be worn out of the house very easily.
I think I answered your question! And no, you are definitely not crazy! Listen, if wearing them out of the house is wrong, I don’t want to be right.
xoxo,
Sheaffer 🙂
Karen H says
Thank you, Sheaffer! Believe it or not, I never saw your answer until tonight when I was reading your Christmas giveaway #3 post!!! I never got any kind of notification that you responded to my comment… at least not that I ever noticed. I really appreciate you reassuring me that I am definitely not crazy! 🙂
When I wear the hooded blardigan, because it is so long, I wear legggings and booties almost always! I love that look! I am only about 5’3″-5’4″, so I could never wear knee high boots with that particular blardigan. But they are a dream to wear. Hey, you think that’s why they are made by Barefoot Dreams?! 😀 I highly recommend them to anyone and everyone!
Thank you again for taking the time to answer my comments!! Merry Christmas! xo
Cindy says
Hi Sheaffer. Can you please tell me if the new blardigan sheds? One of the comments said hers did. I’m thinking of Christmas gifts and this would be a good one. Thanks for all your help in getting me dressed every day!
Sheaffer says
Hi, Cindy! I’ve worn it a couple of times, but I haven’t washed it. Mine hasn’t shed yet. However, none of my blardigans shed….but some readers say theirs do. We have yet to figure out why some do and some don’t. It doesn’t seem to be related to color or style, just totally random. I will say that it seems like a small number of people have a problem with shedding, where the majority doesn’t. Sorry I’m not more help! xoxo, Sheaffer

Our kids started receiving special ornaments every year from the time they were born. It evolved into a Christmas Eve ornament presentation at which they (and their dad) receive 3 or 4 ornaments marking something memorable during the year. My kids are now 27 and 29 and they love it as much now as they did when they were younger. (By the way, baseball provides an endless source of inspiration for ornaments.)
