If you know me, or if you’ve read the blog for awhile, you know I love a statement necklace. Now, my statement necklaces have always been long pendant necklaces (vs. the bib/collar necklaces I think people usually think of when talking about “statement” necklaces). They usually have a cool detail…like a vibrant stone, a leather accent, a tassel, colorful beads that make up the necklace, etc.
Recently, I’ve found myself wearing much more simple jewelry. Don’t get me wrong, you are still going to see me in “statement necklaces” a lot (I can’t quit them!), but I’m also loving wearing some simple and streamlined jewelry for a change of pace. So, when Nordstrom reached out and asked me to talk about fall jewelry, I thought I would switch things up a bit! Instead of lots of color and tassels, today I’m highlighting mainly gold jewelry in various designs. Two designers who have been absolutely nailing this simple jewelry style are Madewell and Gorjana!
Here are my current Madewell favorites:
Here are my current Gorjana favorites:
I’ve been crushing on Gorjana jewelry for years. THESE have been my favorite earrings for the last 3 years or so. They are $60, which is quite a bit more than I would typically pay for a pair of earrings, but I’ve worn them AT LEAST 3 days a week (and often more) for the last several years. They couldn’t be any lighter, and they pack a big style punch (they also come in silver and rose gold). If you spring for them, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
In real life, I wear these flat hammered studs on the regular, I just don’t show them on the blog much because they are hard to photograph. This bar necklace was a favorite for a long time as well, and I was devastated when I lost it. BUT GUESS WHAT Y’ALL! When using a Barrington bag recently (that I hadn’t used since last fall), I FOUND THE NECKLACE tucked away in one of the pockets!!! It’s a wonderful basic that looks so delicate and pretty with so many different types of necklines. You’ll start seeing it again now since it’s been found!
And I just recently discovered the simplicity of Madewell jewelry. It reminds me of Gorjana jewelry, but it’s a bit edgier (and not quite as expensive).
So, for the first look today, I’m wearing a Madewell necklace and ring with Gorjana earrings!
LOOK #1:
I first highlighted this striped top in a red and white striped combo. However, when I highlighted the red colorway, it was only in a flat lay because I ordered a small and it was wayyyyy too big. When I hopped online to order the x-small, it was gone. HOWEVER, the x-small was available in the grey stripe, so I scooped it up. I’ve already worn it with denim shorts and shoreline converse, but I love it dressed up a bit even more. I’m wearing my favorite strapless bra below, but you could also wear a lace bralette (every blogger in the world except me owns this one) if you wanted it to peek out. I’ve also worn it on the shoulder with this $12 cami under it so I didn’t have to worry about the v going too deep in front.
If you’re a super tiny thing, then this top might not work on you. There’s a lot of fabric, and it might swallow you up. I happen to love how slouchy it is, and know I will get a ton of use out of it. It would of course look great with regular blue jeans and grey jeans, but I wanted to see what it looked like with white jeans. I loved the look!
The necklace is adjustable from about 20″ to 37″. When putting this outfit together in my head, I was thinking I was going to wear the necklace short so it laid just on my skin. But, after getting it on, I liked the look of it when it was longer even better! So, I used the slide adjusters, and BAM…I got the perfect length for the outfit. It’s a matted gold (and not super shiny), which I like…and the geometric shapes make it modern without being weird! And we’ll talk more about the boots on Wednesday, but they are the boots I named a MUST HAVE last year. The are back in stock, and NOW ON SALE!
For size reference: I’m wearing an x-small in the top (for sure size down 1, maybe even 2 sizes) and a 27 in the jeans. The boots are true to size.

LOOK #2:
I’ve been wearing cardigans my whole life. In fact, at one time in my life, I owned an obscene amount of matching sweater sets. #thankyouanntaylor #thankyouharolds I might have even tied a cardigan or 12 over my shoulders for the ultimate preppy look. Pair that with a Harold’s skirt, and in 1996 you were feelin’ FINE. 😉
Gone are the days of my matching sweater sets, but I do love a mismatched cardi thrown over a tee. And this year I decided to branch out a bit and try out this long ribbed cardigan. I got grey, but it comes in black too. And you know what? It’s a fun change! I paired it here with my favorite Madewell tee (there are some fun new fall colors out), and this mixed metal Madewell necklace. The necklace combines gold and gunmetal finishes, and the length can be adjusted for anywhere between 18 1/2″ – 37 1/2″.
For size reference: I’m wearing a small in the cardi, a medium in the tee, and a 27 in the jeans. And just in case you’ve forgotten about them, these are the jeans I fell in love with earlier this year and named pajama jeans.

You first saw this flat lay on my post last Wednesday…
And now here I am with it on! I switched out the leopard clutch for my big girl bag because the leopard clutch was behind sleeping puppies. #andyouneverwakesleepingpuppies
Sadly, my exact necklace sold out last week….but I found a couple of similar disc necklaces HERE (for $36) and HERE (for $19). I’m wearing a small in the top, and although all the smalls were gone at the end of last week, some have popped back up in some of the colors!

My watch is now 50% OFF. Get it for yourself, or get it for an early Christmas present for somebody. I get so many compliments on it!
And just in case you haven’t made these itty bitty boot cut jeans yours yet, NOW IS THE TIME. And hey, if you don’t believe me, just check out the online reviews. People love these jeans. I’m wearing a regular size 4, and I’m almost 5’4″. I have to wear shoes with a heel with them, but I always like wearing a heel with bootcut jeans. If you are 5’2″ or under, I think you could order a petite.
These jeans are incredibly stretchy and comfortable….and if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times…THEY MAKE YOU LOOK TALLER AND SKINNIER THAN YOU ALREADY ARE. 😉
And GREAT NEWS! They come in plus size too!

And you might remember this look from a couple of weeks ago, but I wanted to highlight that I was wearing this $24 pair of mixed metal hoop earrings. They are smaller than the Gorjana hoops, but still large enough to be seen! They are light as a feather and so so pretty!
So what do y’all think about the understanded jewelry? Are you a fan? Thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post!
Erika Slaughter says
The understated jewelry is perfect! All the necklaces you featured today need to come live with me. You’re always accessorized SO well!!
Narci says
Oh, I love that stripe top!! It is adorable on you! Also, those hoops are so fun!!
Shay Shull says
Yes, yes, YES to the Gorjana!! I love all of their pieces!
Stephanie Simon says
This understated jewelry is much more my aesthetic than the statement necklaces. I have the Gorjana earrings and they are my favorite earrings as well. I don’t think I’ve ever paid more than $20 for earrings, but you were right, and the high price tag ended up being definitely worth it for me. I wear them several times every week. I think I’m going to have to pick up that geometric necklace. I think it’s great that it’s adjustable!

I totally remember Harolds! They had such lovely silk pleated skirts. I went to a TCU and every sorority house looked like a Harolds or Laura Ashley advert. Lol. Actually, I’m living in England now and am flabbergasted Laura Ashley has stores all over here. Fashion here is so different in the city and London suburbs. I tend to favor the London look now of lots of black. I’ve gotten strange looks when I wear bobble earrings or statement necklaces so have decided to tone it down with my more simple pieces. I am LOVING wearing cozy coats, booties and scarves and actually enjoying my first true Autumn since I was a child. I’ll be happy to return to Katy, Texas for Thanksgivng and breaking out my more colorful clothes. Cheers from a fellow Texas across the pond.

Cute looks! Do you think Nordstrom will re-stock the plum peplum in a small as it is sold out.
Sheaffer says
Hi, Lori! I hope so! I’ll keep my eyes peeled and post it on facebook if I see it pop back up! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Karen H says
Same with the white!
Sheaffer says
Yes! I’ll keep checking!

Oh and Harolds – I loved that store!!!!

Love it.. I think a necklace can dress up an outfit so much. It doesn’t have to be a huge piece just something simple ! Love it
cassie {hi sugarplum} says
So many awesome pendant necklaces!! And I adore that striped sweater on you!!
Barbara says
Love the Kate spade watch that is on sale! I have been wanting a watch like that but when I clicked in the link it took me to a rose gold watch. Is that the one you were wearing? I didn’t see one that was gold and silver that was in sale, like the one you are wearing. Colors can be deceiving online!
Love the burgundy peplum top and ordered a M. May be a little loose but that is OK
Sheaffer says
Hi, Barbara! It must be the one I’m wearing! I never saw it carried in different metals. I absolutely love mine. Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Kelly Franks says
I’m in the same boat. I would love it in silver/gold not rose gold/silver.
Sheaffer says
Hey, Kelly! I’m not totally sure, but when they first carried it, they only carried 1 colorway…which is the one I have. Maybe they added a new color combo, but I wasn’t aware if they did. xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Jennifer says
Ok, LOVE two of your outfits – the first one with the white jeans and then the one with the long sweater and booties. Perfection. Well all are great but those two totally stood out to me and I need to re-create for myself now that fall has arrived in my area.
Yvonne says
Love all the jewelry, but I am still a fan of the statement necklaces! Where is the necklace from in your last picture? The one with the jean jacket. I love it! That is my kind of necklace! 🙂 Thanks as always for the great style inspiration!
Sheaffer says
Me too, Yvonne. You’ll still be seeing those as well! I featured the last necklace last week…it sold out within minutes…it was on sale for UNDER $10!!!!! It was from Nordstrom. So sorry! xoxo, Sheaffe

I still miss Harold’s. 🙁

Jewelry is one of my favorite subjects!!! A necklace can instantly dress up an outfit. Love all the pieces you featured!!
Cariann says
I love everything about this post, I love the simple jewelry and all of the outfits. Thanks Sheaffer! I’ve got to get shopping.
Cary says
You look so cute. I really love the first outfit with the white AOS jeans. I’m struggling with getting a pair of the AOS pajama jeans because every time I try them on, I hate how the behind looks. The pockets look wide on my backside, but they are super comfortable and I like how the front looks.
Hedi says
I just received the strapless bra in the mail from Nordstrom and—you weren’t kidding! SO FRIGGIN COMFORTABLE! And it stays put! Huge thank-you for the recommendation!
