****************************************************************************
Okay….now Wednesday’s original post follows.
So I got lots and lots of messages from you ladies about my most recent black and brown post.
Basically, this color combination was the result of a blog post comment left by Shay awhile back.
And I quote:
“Now, what about mixing grey and brown??? That’s tricky. Can you do it?
Yes. That’s me double-dog daring you.”
So, I accepted Shay’s dare.
home and look in the mirror and think,
“I looked like this ALL day?”
But this was NOT one of those days!
and a BLACK cardigan.
A dare was initiated, and accepted.
Brown, Black, and Grey …..CHECK!
And not only did I complete the dare, I actually enjoyed wearing the combination, and I’ve worn this color combination several times since!
I thought it was a very interesting mix of neutrals and I felt edgy and cool when wearing it.
I mean seriously, don’t all of the ladies in the collage look totally put together and chic?
If you study the above collage (which I totally did), you will see that in order to pull off this look successfully, the brown color (most often cognac) is always found in the accessories.
And in the above collage, it’s ALWAYS brown boots.
I used to think that black boots were a necessity in every woman’s closet,
but I no longer think that.
If you are only going to have 1 pair of boots in your closet,
I firmly believe that they need to be brown.
I think brown boots are the most important color boot to have in your closet.
Hold on.
Let me say that again.
I think brown boots are the most important color boot to have in your closet.
I’ve talked about them before, but here are my favorite brown boots of the moment.
*Saevon boot HERE
*Penny boot HERE
*Juletta boot HERE
*Frye Melissa button boot HERE
(these are expensive, but they will last you a lifetime)
(FYI:
I’ve received MANY e-mails from readers about both the Saevon and the
Penny boot. Everybody that has e-mailed me LOVES them and highly
recommends them.)
Ooooh Wait!
Found another one HERE.
And if cognac isn’t your style, what about THIS pair of chocolate brown wedge boots.
(They are by the same maker of my cognac wedge boots….but they are $60 less expensive!)
Still wondering how you would pull BLACK, BROWN, and GREY off?
This next picture shows a great and simple way for you to do it!
Black shirt, grey jeans, brown scarf, brown boots, and a brown purse.
An outfit made up of simple and great basics;
dark neutrals mixed together for a totally pulled together look.
original source not found |
I thought the above pieces were all basic enough that I could easily recreate the outfit with current pieces out there right now…so I did!
black sweater HERE
kate spade earrings HERE / brown scarf HERE
grey jeans HERE
penny boots HERE / brown purse HERE
It seems to really work to have black and grey anchoring the outfit and to use brown as the accent. A great way to anchor your outfit is with a classic black sweater.
Every closet needs a black sweater in good condition. It will be a work horse in your closet.
I really love mine (even though it is like 3-4 years old).
I really love the following choices:
a) side slit v-neck sweater HERE, b) peplum sweater HERE
c) tunic sweater HERE, d) cowl neck sweater HERE
And I think a grey pair of jeans is something that’s missing in my closet (although I do have grey cords and a grey pair of leggings).
grey jean options from left to right:
LOFT dark grey jeans HERE ($35 right now!)
LOFT light grey jeans HERE ($35 right now!)

Here’s yet another way to mix it up.
Black and grey shirt, black jeans, and brown accessories.

And as mentioned before, if you have basic grey and black pieces making
up the main pieces of your outfit, all that is left to do is thrown on
some brown boots and accessories.
LOTS of options follow.

Love the structure.
Adore the tassel.
The color is gorgeous.
So….WHAT DO YOU THINK?
I’m dying to know if you are now going to try wearing BLACK and BROWN and GREY together?!?
JUST DO IT!

You dominated that challenge! Completely dominated it! I'm totally combining those three colors today! And don't worry…I'm thinking of your next challenge now. It's most likely going to involve chartreuse. I think brown, black and grey must have been too simple…
vanillafrog says
I found a sweater at Old Navy a few weeks ago, they may still have it…black, gray, and camel colorblock…doesn't get easier than that!
Alison @ Get Your Pretty On says
You just reminded me to put a new pair of gray jeans on my wish list. Those coated skinnies are amazing! Can't wait to pair up cognac boots with them. Genius!
Jenna says
I love these color ideas! Do you have any fun clothing ideas for those of us who are pregnant?
The Stoy Family Blog says
I love your shopping ideas- and your blog is my go to spot for inspiration before I shop 🙂 Could you do a post on coats/outerwear? I am in desperate need for coat- and have no idea of where to start! -Allyson
Susanne says
I would love to see a post on coats too! I have looked everywhere for an affordable trench that doesn't make me look like a government agent–they are hard to find!
Anonymous says
Could you provide links to the blogs in your collage?
Sheaffer says
I will try to be better about doing that. Whenever I do collages, it sometimes gets crazy! I often TRY to get to the original source, and I am not able to find it, and therefore I am not able to link to it. I do like to credit the source when possible (especially when it's from a blog and not just a celebrity picture). I will make it a goal to get better about trying to find the original source to credit pictures in collages. Thanks for your input!
xoxo,
Sheaffer 🙂
Daily Express says
If it helps, in the collage from Left to Right is Jen Aniston, then Camila Alves. Not sure who's in the middle. Next is Veronika's Blushing, and the photo on the far right is from oufitposts.com.
P.S. I have the Express grey jeans (of course!) and they are great.
Lana Lou Who? says
I wore this combination last week and totally felt super chic, even though I am 6 months pregnant. I paired black jeggings (love the super stretchiness) + brown boots and belt + black/grey striped loose batwing tee. I felt so good all day; it added an extra bounce in my step!
Daily Express says
You make a very compelling case here….I already have these pieces in my closet but really would not have thought to put them together. I might have to try and see if I can say to myself "Dang, I look good today." Because who doesn't want to think that?
violinista says
I did the brown/black thing back in college before it was "popular" and had someone who thought he had better fashion sense than me make fun of it; sure enough, a few years later, I see it EVERYWHERE. I say: wear what makes you happy and it'll work!
Liz/happymommy says
I never would have thought to put these 3 colors together but they are genius together…LOVE!!! And my boot that I bought for this year is a tall cognac so I am so excited that you said that the brown boot is the staple we should have in our closet!!!
Autumn says
I just blogged an outfit last week with gray, black & brown. And I totally felt like it was the cutest outfit I've ever worn!
Jackie T. says
Well I think you created the Switzerland of all neutral outfits there with that mixing! 🙂 Great job! I'm going to go see what I can come up with now.
I've had the Enzo Angiolini Saylem boot in the chestnut brown for 3 years and I wear the heck out of them with everything! They are the most comfortable shoe or boot I have ever had in my life! I just checked and couldn't find them on Nordy's, yet they were there a couple of weeks ago…maybe they will re-stock.
Laura says
Ok. TOTALLY off subject here {although I am considering jumping on the gray/black/brown bandwagon…}. This has to do with the must-have wedges. This weekend, Hubs and I were in Dallas to buy a car {we live 5.5 hours away}. The sales lady that helped us HAD ON THE MUST HAVE WEDGES!! I noticed them immediately!! And guess what! She took. them. off. and. let. me. try. them. on! Right there in the dealership! She went on and on about how much she loved them and that she had them in about five different colors! I bought a new car this weekend and new wedges!! Love your blog!
Jackie T. says
Laura, that is an awesome story! You gotta love a chick that will let you put your foot in her own shoe for sake of fashion passion! I think I would have bought a car from her too! So what color did you get?
Shawnee says
I got my Saevon boots in last week….they aren't as cognac as I was hoping but I think I will keep them. Can't wait to wear them with my black skinny jeans!! 🙂
Sabrina says
I L.O.V.E. those grey jeans. Geeze Sheaffer, you are just on top of the fall trends this season!! I want them now!! You have too much influence on me 🙂
Kori says
I've been wearing black, gray and brown for years and I think it's so easy and looks so cute!! I just got a pair of gray skinnies to recreate the pic with the black tunic (I pinned that bad boy probably my first day of pinning!! lol!) and am so happy that the temps may go down juuuust enough to wear that outfit (living in SoCal is a bit like Texas, I imagine, when it comes to warm weather hanging on longer than should be legal) pretty quick! Have a fun day!
Darcy says
Brown and black is my favorite combination! I pretty much always wear my brown boots with my black jeans and love how they look! Also, totally scooped up a Rebecca Minkoff bag t the 25% off sale. Had to stop myself from also ordering a Marc Jacobs watch and Hudson skinny jeans.. One item at a time, Darcy!
P.s. highly recommend ordering from the sale. There is no shipping charge and i ordered my purse at noon yesterday and received an email that my item had shipped before 5 PM on the same day! Can't beat that!

Where are your grey leggings from? They are fantastic!
aprilparrish says
I like the black, brown and grey together!!!! My favorite is brown and black. I am in love with those Melissa Frye boots, but the price just breaks my heart!!!! I have some brown boots, but they are not as dark as the cognac; so I've got to get me some like pronto!!! 🙂
Anonymous says
Schaeffer, I just love, love, LOVE your blog. It's dangerous for me to read but oh so good! ;). Quick question – you and I are built very similarly and are similarly sized. That said, can you tell me what size you wear in LOFT pants? Since we don't have a LOFT near us I only own one pair, a size 4. I'd love to take advantage of the current sale but am not sure if I should stick with the same size. Thank for helping a shopping sista out! 🙂
Sheaffer says
No Problem! I wear a size 4 in the Marisa pant! They fit perfectly every time!!!

Sheaffer 🙂
Melody Lietzau says
I broke down and got the Penny boots in Cognac then loved them so much I went back and got them in black. LOVE them!!! I had to get AFO leg braces last month and not ready to show them off. These hide them and are easy to zip over them. So thankful for all your style tips.
mel @ the larson lingo says
Guess what I am wearing today?!?! Cognac boots, jeans, black/white stripe shirt & grey cardi! It is one of my go-to outfits. And, I think I need those Melissa boots, I mean they are my name sake. 🙂
SarahN says
I took on your challenge today and having so much fun with my cognac boots, black leggings and skirt, gray and white striped shirt with a cognac, black and gray scarf! Now I have to shop tonight to get some more pieces to outfits I have mind. You are very bad for my checkbook! (And still waiting to hear about another comparable "must have" to the denim jacket that I wear all too often! Including with my black, gray and brown ensemble today until I warmed up…) thank you for all your ideas!!
JESSICA says
A triple dog dare: NAVY!?
That is the other black/brown/gray color that I have seen go both ways. I have ALWAYS done navy with brown, and loudly gasped when I've seen otherwise. Thoughts?
Kinda drives my OCD bonkers to see the black/brown, but I'm gonna get there soon, as I now see it everywhere. #welcomingchange
Jen Pogue says
You totally dominated on your dare! Your outfit mixing gray, black, and brown is totally cute! I will absolutely copy that look this week. 🙂
PurseONality says
OMG! We were on the same wave length today. I wish I had taken a pic of my outfit today. I wore black leggings, charcoal grey top with my chestnut Uggs. I wore my new, must-have fringed infinity scarf (in Oxblood)! I got so many compliments on my outfit and in feel like I looked good, too!
Narci D says
Love thus! Why have I never thought of adding grey? You are a genius! Those Frye boots are calling my name! 🙂
Meredith says
Two thinkg- I love that you have been showing some plus size options for us ladies with the curves- I wear some plus and some regular depending on how things fit so it is nice to see. Second I have a new pair of wedge booties for you to add to you bootie love

I GOT MY FIRST PAIR OF HUNTER BOOTS!!!!!!!! Just a tiny bit excited and I would be remiss if I didn't thank my fashion guru for the amazing Shop Bop tip!!!! I hate the rain which is rather unfortunate since we live in the Pacific Northwest. These boots are my ticket to singing in the rain!!!
The Every Day Extraordinary says
I bought a pair of Hunter boots!!!!!! Happy birthday to me: ) Couldn't pass up the deal!!!!! Thank you for sharing: )
SarahN says
How warm are the hunter boots? I'm thinking maybe not good for standing in the snow at cross country ski meets?
Sheaffer says
Hi Sarah! I think that if you buy the welly socks that they are actually quite warm. I've never really had to wear them in super cold weather, but people talk about how awesome the socks are. If anybody has any firsthand knowledge on this, please comment!
