So, how many of you want to be besties with Joanna Gaines? I’m thinking we could all shop together, lunch together, and then install some shiplap in my guest bathroom together. And maybe a couple of rustic ceiling beams in the family room if we have some extra time. Doesn’t that sound like a nice little Saturday? #friendgoals 😉
If you are like me, you don’t just admire Joanna’s interiors, but you also love her overall style. She looks just as cute as can be wearing a tee and baseball hat as she does in a dress and booties, and she always seems to be effortlessly darling. And isn’t that what we all strive to be? 🙂 So in hopes of upping my darling game, I started a Joanna Told Me To board on Pinterest for inspiration. I’ve already recreated two looks from the board, you can see them HERE, and today you get a 3rd look! With my outfit today, I drew inspiration from several of her outfits. I paired a chambray shirt (one of Joanna’s GO TO items) with a black maxi skirt, wooden hoop earrings (that Joanna actually wears!), a dash of turquoise, and some Converse.
Joanna Gaines Told Me To y’all. 😉
What do you think? I think it totally looks like something that Joanna would wear! She would probably carry a large cognac tote instead of a cross body, but I was running errands and wanted to be hands free….so the cross body was my bag of choice on this particular day.
I decided to throw on a hat too. You decide if it was because I drew inspiration from Joanna or if it was due to 3 day old hair. #illnevertell
So, here I am in the outfit! My shirt and my maxi skirt are both from Old Navy (and still available!). I am wearing a petite small in the skirt, so I think it’s true to size. (I often wear petites in dresses and skirts.) I am wearing a medium in the chambray shirt, and I often size up in button up shirts, so that’s normal for me. I know lots of y’all prefer the free shipping and returns from Nordstrom, so I included Nordstrom options that are both on sale as well.
exact chambray shirt (Nordstrom version on sale HERE)/ $12 cami / exact maxi skirt (Nordstrom version on sale HERE) / wooden earrings / arrow necklace / shoreline converse / turquoise bracelet stack c.o. Accessory Concierge / cognac cross body c.o. FashionABLE
The outfit made me feel like I could design some custom built-ins and have open shelving in my kitchen. #dontiwish

As mentioned earlier, Joanna would probably carry a tote instead of a cross body. You know I am newly obsessed with THIS one from FashionABLE….but even though I’ve never seen THIS one in person…it’s an awesome price and I love the perforated detail! If you prefer a darker color, you can also click HERE for a different chocolate brown tote that’s on sale for $39.90.
Here’s a selection of totes to choose from across 3 different retailers.
So since today is pretty much dedicated to my love of Joanna, do y’all know that Joanna has a small line at Nordstrom? This metal basket on wood is probably my favorite piece. I think it would look so cute in a bathroom with magazines or maybe in a kid’s room filled with dinosaurs, cars, etc.
Now before you go, let’s continue with the Joanna theme and highlight some things available in the Anniversary Sale that I think Joanna would like, and I know that I like!
I got a pair of Frye boots at the Anniversary Sale 2 years ago, and I adore them. They are classic, very well made, and will stand the test of time (some readers tell me they’ve had theirs for 15+ years and still love them)! And I get tons of compliments on them each and every time I wear them, which is always fun. Just hop over to my Joanna Told Me To Pinterest board to see all of her super cute outfits with her riding boots. For size reference, I had difficulty getting my regular 6 1/2 on in this year’s Frye boots (pictured below). I couldn’t get my foot past the right angle of the heel, so I sized up 1/2 a size to the size 7. They went on VERY easily, but seemed a bit long (a little too much room after my toes) after I got them on. If you got these boots, please leave a comment with thoughts on sizing so others considering them can see! Click HERE for the boots. I have on the slate because that was all they had in store (and the color was really pretty) , but I actually prefer the cognac. If I didn’t already have a pair for myself, I would be getting these. Frye is great about making a wide-calf version for most of their boots, and these boots have that option. THESE BOOTS ARE GORGEOUS. PERIOD. THE END.
This next outfit has a couple more items that seem like they’d be right up her alley. Joanna is always wearing romantic type pieces, and I think this floral top looks just like her. I’m wearing a small, so I think it’s true to size. Like I often do, I sized up and am wearing a medium in the jacket. I could see her wearing this outfit at a house reveal (doesn’t it always seem to be cold at the reveals?)! She would be oh so stylish wearing this as she said, “Are you ready to see your fixer upper?” 🙂
leather jacket / floral top / vigoss jeans (Order a size down, I’m wearing a 26.) / rae necklace / av earrings / lucky booties (true to size for me)

So you saw them in the picture immediately above, but I got these booties for myself, and I love them! And I just know Joanna would too. They would of course be cute with ankle jeans or cuffed jeans, and they would be great with short dresses as well! Joanna would probably pair them with a Madewell shirt dress or a drop waist dress like THIS (in either a floral or the plain cream).
I was actually ready to buy THESE booties, but I ran in to a cute reader (Hi, Brenda!) that was trying on both of them at the same time. So I asked for a picture. They are obviously both VERY cute, but in the end, the Lucky pair was more comfortable to me (and to Brenda!), so that’s the one we went with! Now, to be clear, the Vince Camuto bootie was comfortable as well, the Lucky one just had some padding in the sole that seemed to make it even more comfortable. Thanks for letting me take the shot, Brenda! I really do love the look of the Vince Camuto’s as well. I thought seeing them side by side might be helpful to some of you that were trying to decide between them! Vince Camuto booties / Lucky booties
And because Joanna is a t-shirt and jeans kind of girl, I would like to recommend THESE tees, on sale right now for $17.90 (regularly $25). I wear a small in the tee, and I think it’s a nice and relaxed fit without being baggy. I already had the white one (and a Kelly green one too), and picked up the “grey ebony” and “purple bramble” for myself….and then ordered the “black-white julia stripe”. THESE TEES are great to wear on their own, but also AWESOME to layer under military jackets, leather jackets, blardigans, and baby blardigans! And if Joanna doesn’t know about Vigoss jeans, she should be told…but I imagine she wears AG skinny jeans (my absolute favorite designer jeans that are a great sale price right now).
Get a Joanna tee and jeans look for yourself right here. Just click on what you are interested in. The first 5 items listed are all included in the anniversary sale!
To wrap things up, I feel confident that if I sent Joanna a blardigan or baby blardigan that we really might become besties. And she might even have Clint build me a table just to show her gratitude. Ha! Here I am wearing my baby blardigan in one of my favorite outfits from last year. I can for sure see Joanna in an outfit just like this.
MUST HAVE baby blardigan (The color I’m wearing not available in the sale.) / MUST HAVE leggings (I’m wearing a small in graphite heather.) / brass ladder necklace / boots and tee out of stock
And speaking of blardigans, I received a couple of e-mails over the weekend that let me know I hadn’t shown this year’s original blardigan choices yet. So here they are! And there’s a 3rd color, “pewter”, that wasn’t at my local Nordstrom but is available online.
That’s it for the post today, girls! Check out the Pinterest board for inspiration, and Joanna can tell YOU to as well!

That first pic with all of your inspiration stuff laying out…gives me all of the happy feelings :).
Erika Slaughter says
Love love loved this post! I’m not a Fixer Upper watcher but I’ve definitely seen an episode or two and I think you nailed it! When you said she might even have Clint build you a table to show her gratitude-I LOL’d. Of course she would. 🙂

The thing you need to know about Frye boots is they stretch. I sized up on my first pair and ended up regretting it because they almost got sloppy. Do I still wear them? Ummm…yes. But I have to wear thicker socks and I put some insoles in there. Of course, if you can’t get your foot IN your normal size, that’s a problem, but if you can get it in, just know that there is stretch and those babies will mold to your foot. Within the Nordstrom comments I’ve read a nifty suggestion about using a plastic bag to get your foot in those first few times, but I can’t remember the details right now (Must. Have. Caffeine.). But a cobbler/shoe repair can probably help move this process along because the quality of the leather is so good.
Vicky says
I thought it was just me having issues getting the Frye boots on! I could not figure out why my feet felt like they were getting stuck on something. That being said, once I wiggle my feet in them, they feel like a dream. I normally wear a size 7 – 7 1/2 in boots and booties (if they are higher in the heel I tend to go up to 7 1/2), but the 7’s felt fine once I got them on. I wear medium thickness socks and do not have any issues with tightness at all.
Kim Nations says
Frye boots are awesome. You need to stick to your regular size. They will mold to your feet and stretch some. Love the post.
Tiffany Nelson says
That leather jacket – all the heart eyes!
Leeanna says
I wear my regular size in the Frye Mellissa Button boots. I do have to wiggle a bit to get them on, but then they are perfect! The next size up would definitely be too big. I do have narrow feet though! I have cognac and black and I wear them constantly. I have had them for three years and they are still in perfect condition!
Lisa says
So, the Vigoss ‘Thompson’ distressed jeans – are yours frayed at the ends? I bought them and love everything about them except I can’t get over the frayed ends…I tried cuffing them like yours (and as shown online) and they don’t look right. Did I buy the wrong ones, or is there some kind of trick to cuffing them?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Lisa! Mine are not the frayed ones. Mine are item #5199949. The frayed ones were wayyyyyyyy too long on me. Make sure you size down 1 size because they are super stretchy. I’m normally a 27, and I got a 26. Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Lisa says
Ohh ok! It looks like Item #5168299 are the ones that are on sale and why I was confused. They don’t have #5199949 at my store so I will buy them online! Thanks for your help!
Kathryn says
The link on the original post takes you to item #5168299 with the frayed hem. That’s what I ordered and I had the same problem with the cuff and really needed my normal size. Maybe #5199949 will go on sale soon.
Karen says
What about the Frye vs. the Tory Burch Ashlynn boots? I’m so torn! HELP!
Sheaffer says
Hi, Karen! I actually have a picture of the TB boots on Wednesday’s post! They are GORGEOUS, but I personally prefer the Frye boots. You can’t go wrong. xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Kathryn says
I have a trip to Spain coming up soon where it will reach 100 degrees yet I need to have my knees and shoulders covered when touring cathedrals. Any outfit suggestions for touring or for the 9 hour plane ride? I suspect the must have leggings fit in here somewhere? Thanks!
Sheaffer says
Hi, Kathryn! I would definitely suggest the leggings and the blardigan for the plane ride! You will be SO COMFY! How do you feel about wearing dresses that you could throw a denim jacket on with when entering cathedrals? My Kut from the Kloth denim jacket can fit in a tote and just come out when you need it! Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Kathryn says
I am sure to be the most comfortable person on the plane thanks to you! I just purchased the indigo baby blardigan you mentioned. And I happen to own the denim jacket with thanks to you as well. You have me all set! Many thanks!
Genevieve Graham says
Ok, so all of your posts are always adorable and rock but this one takes the cake. i LOVE Joanna’s and your style!! so creative!
Stephanie says
I love these posts, I am such a fan of both you and Joanna! I have noticed she tends to wear boot cut jeans a lot. Do you have any recommendations for boot cut jeans?
Sheaffer says
Hi, STEPHANIE! Try the Vigoss Chelsea bootcut! I love mine! Xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Shannon Barnett says
Love her and you too:) I did some initial damage at the pre sale…I wanted to make sure you knew they have SuperGoop Spray sunscreen in the anniversary sale as well in a 3 pack. They also have the setting mist you love. I bought a variety of their products on your recommendation and my daughter with sensitive skin has been using them and has not had any problems! Their spray is unique in that it does not have the chemical propellent that is bad for you…Total find! Thanks for all your recommendations!
Sheaffer says
I didn’t know, Shannon!!!! Thanks so much for the heads up! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Glo says
Sheaffer, I might have missed this but do you recommend ordering your normal size on the Lucky Booties or sizing down or up? I have the Lucky booties from last year in the Leopard and they are size 6. Sometimes I wear a 5 1/2. What are your thoughts?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Glo! I think true to size this year for most people, but if you are sometimes the lower size, I think those might work even better. Hope this helps! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Carly says
Do the Caslon tees require a tank underneath? I read online that they are a little sheer and hate having to wear tanks/camis under tees. Thanks!
Sheaffer says
Hi, Carly! I have to wear a cami under my white one, but I don’t under any others! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Kris says
Can you recommend a good Cami?
Sheaffer says
Hi, Kris! Search “BP cami”. It’s $12 and I love it. I size up a size and wear a medium! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Kris says
I adore your blog and picks! Thanks for the tip!
Leslie says
Sheaffer,
I actually DO buy everything you tell me to…it’s mildly EMBARASSING. But I’m okay with it because you make me look gooooood. ???????? Got my suede Rebecca Minkoff saddle bag today but I’m freaking out. How are you planning to protect it? I’m so nervous I’m going to ruin it right away…plus I’m a mama to 4 littles…this is a dicey situation. HELP!
Sheaffer says
Hi, Leslie! Okay, so I don’t freak out about stuff like this (I probably should, but I don’t.)! Ha! But if you google it, I bet people scotch guard them or something?!? Let me know if you find out any good tips! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
Lynne says
I love that tee! Will have to grab a few colors.
Can you compare the “must have” Hue leggings to Zella, since I now you’ve written about that brand, as well? I own every color in Hue but I need some crop leggings so thinking of grabbing the black zella live in crops in the sale but they aren’t sold at my store. How does the fabric and sizing of the zella compare to the Hue. I wear a size XS in the hue. I’ve owned them in small and while I like that the ankles are a little looser in the small, the waist is too baggy and I don’t get that nice “smoothing effect” that I do from the XS. 😉 I see it says they (zella crops) run small so I’m thinking a small in them? Wish Hue made the UWW in crops. Appreciate any advice!
Sheaffer says
Hi, Lynne! I love the Zella also, but they are just different. The black Zella I own have a more athletic look to them. I don’t know why, but they look more like work out gear. Sorry I’m not more help! I do wear a small in both. Hope this helps a little bit! xoxo, Sheaffer 🙂
