We turn the calendars to September tomorrow, which means it’s officially that time of year. You know what I mean. It doesn’t feel like it’s summer since it’s September, but it doesn’t feel like fall because it’s still 100 degrees outside.
#AWKWARD
It’s this time of year when I always feel like it is time to start slowly transitioning my wardrobe. But let’s be real, I live in Texas…so even though tomorrow marks the first of September, cooler temperatures aren’t here just yet. Still, once September hits, I don’t want to always be wearing shorts and sandals. Even when it’s still hot outside, I want to start looking more fall-ish. So when summer starts to fade into fall, I have a handful of key pieces that I always want to have available. In addition to these GO TO articles of clothing, I also have some tips and tricks up my sleeve for the transition period.
Today I’m highlighting just 2 outfits. But both outfits are full of pieces that are perfect for now and later, and I got everything from Zappos!!!! (Sidenote: I used to think Zappos was only for shoes, but boy was I wrong. They have so many of my favorite brands and a huge inventory!)
When dressing (and when buying clothes for fall), I tend to gravitate towards warmer and darker colors, I think a new bag is always fun at the start of a new season, and transitional shoes are always of utmost importance! I like to focus on pieces that make the awkward transition from summer to fall a little less awkward.
OUTFIT #1: FALL FLORAL, ANIMAL PRINT, and MULES
For this first outfit, I built the entire look around the floral peplum blouse. This is something I do a lot. I focus on a single piece I know I want to wear, and then I style the outfit around that piece.
peplum blouse / statement hoops / necklace / leopard cross body bag / jeans / neutral mules
It’s 100% cotton and PERFECT for early fall.
The rusty clay color is gorgeous and it’s a great lightweight fabric for now. It’s also perfect for layering with a cardi, denim jacket, or military jacket later as the temps cool down. I love the pleated peplum hemline and the playful floral pattern. For size reference, I’m wearing a small. It looks very wide when on the hanger, but when on, it lays nicely. (The small is a bit tight across the chest, but I think a medium would be too wide everywhere else.)

The statement hoops are some of my favorites that I’ve owned for a while now. I like their substantial size and the matte gold coloring (vs. a shiny gold). They feel very fall to me, and their size certainly makes a statement.
The necklace is a great basic that can be worn 3 ways. They aren’t connected, so each necklace can be worn on it’s own, or they can be layered together.

This leopard cross body bag was such a great find! It’s what fall bag dreams are made of. Just a little animal print on a neutral background with a neutral strap….PERFECT for this transitional time.

And just like the earrings, I like that the hardware on the bag is brushed bronze instead of shiny gold.

These boyfriend jeans are a great option for you if you want to ease into a style that isn’t a skinny jean. I love the wash for fall, and we all know that the straight leg styling is very on trend. At 5’4″, these are a little longer than I’d like, but that’s great news for you taller ladies. For size reference, I’m wearing a 4. They’ve got a bit of stretch in them, and they aren’t stiff at all. If you are only used to wearing skinny jeans, these are going to take a minute to get used to. But I’m telling you, I’ve ordered probably 10 pairs of jeans that I haven’t even shown on the blog because they were terrible! I actually like these, they are just a pretty big departure from what I’m used to. Still, PROGRESS!

I mean, the bag is obviously adorable, and it pairs perfectly with these neutral mules.
Mules are what I think of first when I think of a perfect transitional shoe. The toes are covered, the heel is open, and they really work beautifully in both late summer and early fall (and all spring long as well). True to size for me.

OUTFIT #2: BLACK BLOUSE, BRIGHT GREEN BAG, and LEOPARD MULES
I’ve got another super simple early fall outfit for you. You can’t get much more classic than a black blouse, jeans, and leopard shoes. I just happened to jazz this basic outfit up a bit with some great accessories and a darling bag.

This blouse is the cult favorite Madewell Drapey Shirt. And it’s just what it sounds like. It’s a soft and lightweight material, and the cut and the little soft pleats make it drape beautifully. It’s a relaxed fit, and the black and the olive colors that it comes in make it perfect for fall. For size reference, I’m wearing a small.

Y’all. HOW FABULOUS are these earrings. They were gifted to me by Kendra Scott, and I oohd and ahhhd like a crazy person when I took them out of the box. They are STUNNING. The beadwork is gorgeous, but they still manage to be totally fun.

Love the matching bracelet too (also gifted). It’s like a grown up and fancy version of a friendship bracelet!

After ordering sooooooooooo many jeans over the last couple of months that I immediately returned, it was a nice change of pace to order the 2 pair I’m featuring today and to like both pair! Again, they are very different than the style of jeans I’ve been wearing for years, but I’m having fun branching out.
They are the Catherine High Rise boyfriend jeans, but I didn’t find them to be too overwhelmingly high waisted like every other pair of jeans I’ve ordered lately. I also found them to be a good weight for fall because they have a little thickness to them. And although not as stretchy as the jeans I’m used to, they still have a little bit of stretch. For size reference, I’m wearing my regular size 4.

I mean, the bag is adorable. The green color is so striking and the faux croc is so on trend.
And the shoes are fabulous.

Come on, these leopard mules are to die for. I love the classic leopard pattern (I’m picky about my leopard patterns) and the gold chain gives these mules an extra punch of sass. They’re awesome. True to size for me.

Just an easy fall outfit!

I live where it gets COLD in the winter and I would love to get some tips on wearing all these cute styles with SOCKS! I end up in skinny jeans or leggings with tall boots because I can’t quite figure out how to make the look work with short boots and bunchy socks?! Help!?!
Sheaffer says
Hey, Erika! Hmmmmmm…that’s a great question. Once it gets cold here, I’m wearing the tall boots too. Sorry I don’t have any tips! xoxo
Diane says
I live in a cold area too. I do skinny jeans with ankle boots and I let a little bit of a fun sock peek out. LIke a black with polka dots with a black boot. It’s simply too cold to have bare ankles. I also do not do this style of shoe because there is like maaaaybe 1 month you could wear these without freezing feet (post sandal season)
